Q: Why does a stamp with the text www.pdflib.com appear on all my pages?

A: This demo stamp appears when one of our binaries distributed by PDFlib
GmbH is used. It can be disabled by purchasing a PDFlib license, and
applying the delivered license key (serial) at runtime with the
PDF_set_parameter() function as indicated in the manual. With the
ActiveX/COM edition of PDFlib the serial can also be supplied during the
installation process.

I think the manual was supposed to be dowloaded with the demo.

one of the developers here is using pdflib and upon generating a pdf there
is a green pdflib.com logo on each page. We have a registered copy, so
licensing shouldn't be an issue.

has anyone experienced this?

Well there has always been a CF Enterprise, but MM listens to us on the
group and when we whined and said there wasn't anything free for us to
develop in they offered us a development version of CF Enterprise. It allows
you to use CF Enterprise in it's full functionality, no features taken away.
You just can only use it for one ip address.

1. PWS? What I don't get it. PWS is a web server. Sure ASP is built in,
but you can get a FREE Developer version of CF Enterprise and it can work in
conjunction with PWS. Where's the problem here?

2. Again if you install the free version of CF on the laptop I doubt this
would be an issue. Though I question having an entire web application on a
laptop. If anything I would have given them the information they needed in
another form and made life easier to upload data to the rest of the
application.

Sure you pay for CF, but we already knew this. Not everyone can have 75% of
the world's desktop so they can just offer things for free. I don't see why
you can't program CF in a word processor, matter of fact a lot of my

in no means required.

I have to agree that CF is easier and faster to use than ASP. However, ASP
does have the advantage of PWS. Does CF have an equivalent? I started out
with ASP, then used CF for two years, and now I'm using ASP again. I'm not
ecstatic about it, but I have found a couple of advantages:

1. Thanks to PWS, if I want to work from home, I can just copy the ASP site
to my home computer. With CF I had to work across a cable connection which
slowed things down a bit. Of course, I have to access the database over the
network either way, but the web files can be retrieved and saved faster with
PWS.

2. One of our web sites is not only used by people on-line, but also by
field personnel who use laptops, and have to upload and download data.
Thanks to PWS and MSDE, they will be able to use the same ASP pages as the
on-line users, while using DTS to transfer data back and fourth. In a
similar situation with CF, we had to develop a separate Access application
for the field team members.

Some other more obvious advantages is that ASP is free and can be developed
in a simple word processor, if need be. Microsoft is also a huge name,
whether you like them or not, and it doesn't hurt to know how to user their
technology.

CF equivalent to PWS is PWS. You can use PWS with CF. I do all my
development on my local PC by copying the CF site to my home computer.
The best thing to do is know the technology you are using.

You would at least need to add a history table or make sure that the

Each artist can have several albums, and each album can have several

wondering , is where should I keep pricing info and such? Should it be
in the album table or should there be a seperate table for pricing etc.

Any insight would be helpful

RE: Session and Client Variables

2001-11-16 Thread Daye, Marianne

Woe, cease fire! I, the 'original respondent', was just trying to exercise
my awkward sense of humor. Kwan Suh, if I ever pick a fight, I want you on
my side. You may be belligerent, but you make a good case.

I have worked on two shopping cart type applications with complex variables.
On the first I used client scope and wddx, on the second I tried session
variables. They both worked fine, but the session variables were more
troublesome because things didn't work out as planned (and I did actually
plan). My 'brilliant' idea was to use the Duplicate() function to copy all
complex session variables to request scope in the application.cfm (to be
'efficient', not lazy), and then copy changed data back to the session
variables as applicable in each action page. The problem was that the
Duplicate() function was buggy (to put it mildly), and I finally had to
resort to copying individual structure keys at the top of every page, and
putting cflock tags around the queries, which, I agree, is very cumbersome.
So we learn from our mistakes, but had the Duplicat() function worked
correctly, I think it would have been a good plan. Perhaps when we upgrade
to CF 5 it will work.

The reason I spoke of hidden variables was that when using client variables,
I stored the wddx in a hidden field rather than in a database. Also, before
I got involved in the second appilication, it had been designed without
session management, and hidden fields were used to pass data for each
selected line item from one page to the next, which was was truly cumbersome
to manage.

We will probably never use clustered servers, but you have a very good
point. Should we ever have the opportunity to work on an application that
calls for it, it would be a sign of growth from a business perspective, but
a perhaps a nightmare from a programmer's point of view.

I hope Gyrus will be ready for his exam, now.

Taking cover!

Yes, I realize this. But I will bet you 1 million widgets that a properly
configured RDBMS is _much_ better at handling locking than a properly
configured CF server using session variables. Not to mention that my client
app will actually scale, and your session app will not.

I think the original respondent was referring to constant database calls for

I think the overarching requirement for most, if not all, enterprise-class
applications are reliability and availability. I can't see how using
session vars meshes with this requirement. Hey, if all someone's mak

Kwang Suh,

My heart goes out to you! You sound like you've had a bad experience with a
session variable cult, or something. But if used in its proper context,
session variables can change your (work) life. In your darkest hour, when
confronted with the need to pass queries of information, the number of rows
unbeknownst to you, from one page to another, over and over again in a
endless, vicious cycle, you might find that session variables are your only

database calls.

Yikes!

The key differences between client and session variables are:

session variables must be locked, or have automatic locking set.
client variables can be stored in a database, allowing much better
scalability with your apps.
client variables can only store "simple" datatypes.

And yes, client variables DO "time out".

Bottom line: session variables suck. I hate them. They are the bane of
CF. I hate how people put gigantic structures in session variables and then
use them like simple variables. I hate how people forget to lock session
variables. I hate how people don't know when to use type="exclusive" vs.
type="readonly". I hate all the workarounds so that you don't have to lock
session vars (talk about doing extra work to be lazy). I hate how they make
deployment of scalable apps a huge headache.

Session variables. Just say no.

RE: Having major problems with session variables

2001-11-14 Thread Daye, Marianne

Just a shot in the dark, but are you by any chance using the Duplicate()
function to copy complex session scoped variables to local variables? In CF
4.5 and earlier, the Duplicate() function can cause some really strange
memory corruptions, and even reach outside the current session and
application to pick up other session scoped variables.

Subject: Having major problems with session variables

Hi,

Session Variables seem to be a hot topic at the minute, so I was
wondering if anyone could shed some light or give some advice on the
problem below.

We have a multiple user web based application that is all user-profile
based.

User A is the site administrator with full access to the site.

User B is a member of company 1, and he can only see his companies data
on the site.

User C is a member of company 2, and he can only see his companies data
on the site.

What we are experiencing is a swapping of user profiles. User B is
logging in as himself and is happily navigation through the site,
gaining access to their own data, until they start to see information
which is supposed to only be relevant to User C.

User A is sometimes logging in, and is getting restricted access to the
site because he has somehow inherited the profile of another user (who
has a lower access privilege).

Somehow the profiles are being swapped while the users are in the
system.

We are using session variables for the profiling, and access privileges,
but the somehow are getting mixed up.

When we are calling session variables in a query on any individual page
we have declared local variables corresponding to these at the top of
the page, and referenced these throughout the rest of the page, see
below,

Select *
from table
where user_id = #Variables.chris#

We are also using StructClear() to kill the session variables when the
user logs out.

I do not know what else to do, as the problem is still persisting. Has
anyone experienced this, or can they offer any advice or direction.

Cheers,

RE: Request Scope Questions

2001-11-13 Thread Daye, Marianne

Well, the 'issue' (to put it mildly) that we experienced appeared to be one
of memory corruption. We got inconsistent, very vague error messages,
sometimes referencing variable names from another application on the same
server. The problems were very persistent, so if you haven't been having
problems already, you might be safe. Unfortunately the patch is only for CF
Enterprise (we have Professional), so I resorted to copying all individual
structure keys to Request scope, and locking Session scoped queries before
looping throught them.

What was the issue?! I've got several sites live that are relying
on Duplicate for passing session vars to request scope, and
I'm not sure if the hosts have all the latest patches.

RE: Points of failure for session variables

2001-10-02 Thread Daye, Marianne

Chris, what did you mean when you said that a query with a name of
application.queryname is a 'write'. Doesn't that depend on what you do with
it? If I loop through session.QueryName, but only read the values, is that
not a 'readonly' for locking purposes?

Manually locking all reads and writes (locking by scope) is good. Beware of
things that might not look like writes - like a query with a name of
application.queryname is actually a write into the application scope.

Also, use the Duplicate() function with CFSET whenever making a copy of a
complex variable (arrays & structures, at least. Allaire/MM say queries are
complex, other folks say they're not). If you don't use Duplicate() when
copying complex variables your copy is a pointer to the original rather than
a real copy.

And test for session validity at the beginning of every request.

Chris Norloff

RE: Training Recommendations

2001-09-07 Thread Daye, Marianne

Hi Jay,

I took a class called Implementing a Database on MS SQL 7.0 with
Productivity Point Intl (www.propoint.com). It covered everything you're
looking for, and you get to keep the lesson binder. It does not related
back to ColdFusion, but I think it's important to learn the ins and outs of
SQL and Enterprise Manager apart from ColdFusion as well, since it's usually
most efficient to do as much of the database work as possible via views and
stored procedures rather than in the ColdFusion code.

Hi All -

I'm hoping someone can recommend some ColdFusion training that focuses
on a variety of topics at the database level, especially including:

* Database Design Techniques
* Implementing Stored Procedures
* Designing and Using Triggers
* Joins

I started using ColdFusion on a very casual, teach-myself-as-I-go basis
back when CF3 was the latest and greatest. I am very confident with my
ColdFusion specific skills, but continue to find that my SQL skills (or
lack of) are holding me back. I get especially confused with joins, and
moment I prefer to use the old ANSI 88?? style joins. However, when I
need to do any complex nested joins, I find myself relying on Access's
query builder because I absolutely can't figure out how to write them by
hand. I also have very little knowledge about stored procedures,
triggers, indexes, etc. I've been able to gather that stored procedures
and triggers can make a world of difference performance-wise, and I feel
as-if I'm providing a a great disservice to my customers by not knowing
how to properly evaluate when I should be using implementing
stored-procedures, triggers or whatever.

Overall, I want to improve my database design and SQL skills, but I want
the information I learn to be delivered in a way so that it's always
relating back to ColdFusion.

Any suggestions?

A little help please. I am trying to use some javascript on my CF pages. I

action and return the value: i.e.

The formname and Fieldnames are being passed fine, but how do I use them.
now oldvalue is being set EQ to "document.FormName.FieldName.value" not the
value of the field , how can I get the value from the form field.

If I call the formfield in the function by hardcoding its name I get the

change the function each time.

RE: To ASP or not to ASP

I initially used ASP, and had to switch to CF when I changed jobs. I get my
work done faster in CF, and I don't have to define and open objects to
access data from a database. You can also get new people trained faster on
CF than on ASP because they don't need to know VB. CF does not eliminate
the need to use JavaScript, and I still get to utilize my VB skills in
Access once in a while. Personally, I don't miss ASP at all.

I've always heard bad things about auto-number fields, but I use them
anyway...

But one thing I've seen is to make a table in your database, call it
nextid or something and put two columns, tablename and id. Store the next
id for each table in the id column...Update it within a transaction after
any insert.

So when you go to insert:

insert into mytable (id,col1,col2)
values ((select id from nextid where tablename = mytable),col1val,col2val)

then:

update nextid
setup id = id + 1
where tablename = mytable

This is more of a theory question than an actualy request for help. Let's
say you are building a database of members with lots of information that
applies to every member (name, address, phone, etc.) This could be about 40
seperate fields. Then, on top of that, each member can have lots of
optional information that can easily be grouped together. For example, if
they graduated from college, you want to store their degree information or
if they own a company, you want to store their company info. Each of these
"optional groups" are one-to-one (each member can only have one chunk of
this data but doesn't have to have it at all.) Now here's the question -

When you are building this database, you could easily put it into one huge
table because all the information is one-to-one. However, it's a pain when
you only want to get the "degree" information or the "company" information.
>From a programming standpoint, is it best to break these into smaller tables
for ease of use or to keep it into one table?

Thanks,
Jason

the Index tab and enter 'rotated data'. Double-click on the highlighted
selection, and select Cross-tab Reports. That's the best example I've seen
anywhere.

You might try building a cross-tab query using T-SQL, instead. You can use
the CASE function for this. There's an example in SQL Server Books Online,
which you probably have installed on your SQL Server, or can get in Windows
HTML Help format here:

Got PDFlib?

2001-02-05 Thread Daye, Marianne

I'm considering using PDFlib to generate PDF files on the fly, and I was
wondering if anyone has some experience to share. We can't use existing pdf
templates because the number of fields varies, and it's my understanding
that PDFlib allows you to create the PDF dynamically on the server.

Originally we were using Crystal Reports and CFX_CRWTOPDF which no longer
works, and I haven't been able to find anything to replace it that
combination. Generating the PDF files on the server is the best alternative
I've been able to come up with. Got better ones?

Guys,

I need a cross browser DHTML menu asap that can do drop down, and slide
menus.

Menu
|-Item1
|-Item2
|-Item3--|-Item5
|-Item4 |-Item6

Does anyone know of a good simple API or generator, that has been tested
(the important part of the question) on NN4+ and IE4+, that they would
recommend? Please don't suggest CF_DHTMLMenu as it specifically states that
it's not for NN.

Thanks

RE: queries vs arrays

2000-12-14 Thread Daye, Marianne

Thanks, guys, for asking and answering the right question! This is the
perfect solution to my shopping cart dilemma. I'm not ready to tackle
structures of arrays, yet, but this works just as well if not better:

Loop through shopping cart (query) once to create a list of key fields.
Use Row = ListFind(lstKeyFields) to determine the position of the key in
question.
Retrieve data with Query.ColumnName[Row]

I don't know if this is old news to the CFPros, but I feel a song coming on!

RE: CFreport and crystal reports

2000-12-13 Thread Daye, Marianne

Try taking a look at recrystallize.com. It's just a wizard that generate
the html files to run the crystal report; you can probably fined your
answers in those files. There's a beta version you can try for free. It
uses a dll (u2fpdf.dll) which comes with the download. I haven't actually
tried it, yet, since I'm still using CR7, and the feature I need (PDF
download)only works with CR8, but I plan to if we upgrade. If you try it,
let me know what you think.

I have a CF form that when submitted emails a number of persons in my
company. One problem is that it seems to cut-off an address at a certain
limit.

My question: Is there a limit as to how many email addresses can be listed
in the TO= line? I separate each address with a comma and no space. I have
tried including a CC= and BCC= to see whether the TO= has some sort of
address limit, but the problem persists even though it moves down and
cuts-off another email address. It may also be a problem with the email
setup on our internal system as well I realize.

Any help appreciated or suggestions. Thanks

All indications though is that everyone receives the email. Below is the
error email the submitter only receives indicating a problem with an email
address:

RE: CF Career Advice?

Location may be a factor. In my location (RTP, NC) the demand is so great
that many employers have to settle for less than what they'd hoped for,
which is a great opportunity for an entry level who just wants an

Hello Folks,

Wow. I have s much to learn. Just when I think I am getting to

scratching the surface.

I could really use some help in the professional development area.
Situation: New college grad working at a province-wide non-profit in a
relatively rural area, that wants the world while recompensing me on
the same level as McBurger flipper and is not willing to invest
anything in professional development. Now the choice here is

But where? How? Every CF Developer wanted ad asks for far more than I
have or can learn in the boondocks. Is anyone looking for a junior CF

I cannot seem to find the opportunities. (Yes, I realize I am whining

To keep it simple, how about running a Make-Table query using 'SELECT

RE: Need a good dynamic bar & pie chart app...

2000-09-05 Thread Daye, Marianne

I was happy with an applet called tChart which allows you to pass parameters
to various types of charts. At http://www.javaside.com/us/tchart.shtml you
will find a demo and download. The download comes with several files
depending on your circumstances. To pass parameters you'll want to use the
example in tChart5.html source code. You do have to tinker with the html
source code to get the number of columns, labels, colors, etc. that you
want, but once you get the hang of it, it's a great tool at very low cost
($55 w/o Java source code).

If any of the remaining fields are numeric you can use SELECT DISTINCT name,
sum(foo) AS foo, sum(bar) AS bar ..., and that will narrow down the

Hi all,

I'm trying to select all of the values from a table where type=foo and I
would like to eliminate duplicates based on name.

EG.
SQL="select distinct(name), other, field, names from table where type = foo"
-this returns every field where type is a match.
SQL="select distinct(name) from table where type = foo"
-this works but does not retrieve additional field info.

Am I to understand that select distinct cannot be utilized in this fashion?
It works if I select the name field only, but if I want more than the name
field it returns all matches. I cannot ask that the database be
restructured.

Is that just the way it is?

There was an article in the ColdFusion Developer's Journal called Dynamic
Table & Query Engine that gives you what you need, and then some (provided
you're NOT using Access). I couldn't find the complete article on line, but
you can get the source code listings at http://www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/.
Click on SOURCE CODE in the header, select volume 1, Issue 6, and select

What I want to achieve is to use all columns in a table to construct some

many there are or what they are called.

RE: searches failing...help.

2000-07-12 Thread Daye, Marianne

If you use 'WHERE knowledge = '#search_string#, you will only get records
where knowledge matches the search string exactly. If you use LIKE, you
will only get records where some part of knowledge matches the search string
exactly, i.e. 'Jane Doe' is contained in 'Jane Doe Peterson', but 'Jane Doe'
is not contained in 'Jane B. Doe'. In the case of "where synopsis =
'#search_string#'", does synopsis contain the word 'site' only, or is 'site'
only a part of the field content?

Hi,

Ive got myself a tiny problem...which should be a snap for
you folks that are more skilled than myself right now...

select id, entered_date, synopsis, knowledge
from nxsknow
where knowledge = '#search_string#'
order by entered_date desc

this query will fail each and every time with the following
error.

[microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]TEXT and IMAGE datatypes
may not be used in the WHERE or HAVING clause, except with the LIKE
predicate and the IS NULL predicate.

HOWEVER when I change the WHERE statement to the following...

where knowledge LIKE '#search_string#'

I get no results. It doesn't matter what I enter as a variable.
I should get something backshouldn't I ?

The somewhat annoying part about this is if I change the where
statement to the following

where id = '#search_string#'

and id is equal to some number...this query works...and pulls up a
single record...or if I change the where statement to

where synopsis = '#search_string#'

and synopsis is equal to "site". It returns nothingit should
return something
because half the entries in this table half the word "site" in the
field synopsis.

And before you think that there's nothing in the table...there is plenty
of data. What's up with this query...why is this happening ? Any
clues ?

Miles.
