Re: OT - Purchasing .bm domain names

2009-04-26 Thread Ravi Gehlot

Hello Adrian,

Registering domains outside of our jurisdiction may not be an easy
process. You must be familiar with a countries policy in registering
TLDs. For example, in order for someone to register a domain in Brazil,
they must have Brazilian documentation and in some instances you may
even need to have a company established in Brazil. I am not sure about
Bermuda. I am also not sure how 101domains manages to get around and
register domains from other countries. I would do a research before
proceeding with registration just to make sure that you will have full
access to your newly purchased domain in the future. Make sure to read
the policies with your registrar and understand what they are doing.
Just because you may be able to buy a domain for a different country
does NOT mean that you may own all rights to it.

Re: Thinking of a career change.. how does one get into Technical Recruiting..

2009-03-16 Thread Ravi Gehlot

Hello Jeffry,

I hear that a lotI believe that there is good and bad
everywhere. In my opinion, if you are really good and you do your job
honestly, no matter who you are (native or foreigner), that you will get
paid fairly and you will not be treated as servants (not sure about
other countries). Be it a foreigner or a native, it does not really
matter anymore. It may have mattered in the past but not anymore. I do
not believe that foreigners are taking away the jobs natives can do (I
refer to computer related jobs). I believe that natives are choosing the
best work force for their current needs.

Do I think that it is somewhat harder for foreigners than it is for
natives? Yes. I do think that it is but this is a country of
opportunity. The kind of opportunity that you will never find elsewhere.
So I would take any hardness that I find here for a chance to better myself.

H1B Visas are HARDLY being issued (so I hear). Its almost unheard of
these days. Either you come here on a student visa (I-20 co-op program)
or you better have a Green Card. H1B Visas can cost a LOT of money to
companies and it is ONLY worth in exceptional cases. I heard about a
company that brought this Chinese dude that was phenomenal. He could do
virtually anything you can imagine. He was one of a kind
programmer...very smart...later got admitted at MIT and today if I am
not mistaken he works for NASA. The company sponsored his Green Card and
everything. Only those kind of people are getting H1B Visas these days
(so I heard). It is very selective these days.

My sister is a Canadian citizen and she was telling me about Canadian
immigration laws the other day. She told me that in order for anyone to
enter Canada that they need to be qualified. The Canadians have a score
system. You need to have a certain score in order to enter Canada. So
for example, if you have a bachelors degree you automatically get more
points. If you have a valid work history then that also counts towards
your score. This way only the qualified people get in. What I love about
Canada is that once they filtered everyone, they make it easy for you to
get the Canadian citizenship. Forget about this bullshit of Green Card.
There are no talks about foreigners being servants in Canadians (so I
hear). I just think that we should implement some type of score system
or qualification measurement so to only let those who are qualified
into the country. Indeed, make it easy for newcomers to get their Green
Cards.

woww...OK! I gotta work now...got carried away...anyways...cya

Ravi.

I understand that many of the criticisms of such programs, such as H1B
Visa, is that companies are bringing in foreigners to jobs that native
USA-residents are qualified to do; and the workers brought in are
treated as indenture servants. I do not know enough about said programs
to tell whether that is a valid concern of a bunch of FUD.

Hello Rob,

I agree with you. Companies will always do whats best for them no matter

 happening, you can react accordingly.

A few years ago, I had taken a remote job with a company out of San
Diego. They were a computer hardware/software reseller similar to CDW
(but it was NOT CDW). I was one of four developers, only one of which
worked on-site. The company flew us all out and we had a great time for
the week meeting each other, going over systems, making plans, etc, etc,
etc, while listening to the CEO and his right-hand-man make promises for
 the future.

A few months later, my job got cut because they decided to cut one of
the four developer positions and outsource that position to CHINA. They
could get TEN chinese developers for what they were paying me (which
 wasn't much to begin with).

When I spoke to the CEO's right-hand-man about this, and the promises
made while we were all in San Diego, he said, hey, it's business. Nice.

I've kept in touch with some of the people there, and as we all figured,
the outsourcing came back to bite them in the ass, and I've even seen
them advertise for developers on cf-jobs.

So I guess the bottom line is this... NEVER take anybody's word unless
it's in writing, and even then, doubt it.

Re: Thinking of a career change.. how does one get into Technical Recruiting..

2009-03-13 Thread Ravi Gehlot

Just my $0.02 cents...I think that recruiters do help one get a job.
Yes, most recruiters are all about business but who is not? They try to
get you in and if they can not then they go on to the next one. This is
just the nature of their business. They gotta make it work and in order
to make it work they have to move fast and find the right candidate for
the right position.

That's fine. However, what I do not agree with is the fact that most of
these recruiters are extremely friendly at first and then it all changes
afterwards. I have heard this from most programmers. This is not just
coming from me. Also, if they can not get you the job that they have
been trying to then they also vanish without a trace (this does not
apply to all recruiters). They don't even send you an e-mail to say
go look for a new opportunity. I mean, it only takes 5 seconds
right? I took 1 week of my time to talk to you and you do not have 5
seconds to say...Hey, it did not work but maybe next time?

AlsoI had one recruiter call me every 2 weeks to have me rely
information about the company hiring procedures. He wanted to know if
anyone was being hired directly by the company instead of his recruiting
company. SoI try not to be on either side..I am neutral. But
man...you come to me to ask me questions but when I go to you to ask you
questions you just ignore me? What kind of recruiter-to-programmer
relationship is that?

This is not an attack on recruiters. My experience with recruiting
companies is OK. Will I work with recruiters in the future. YES.
Everybody is entitled to making mistakes right? I am sure they also have
a lot to tell about programmers too.

This is just my $0.02 cents,
Ravi.

Jerry Johnson wrote:

But many programmers and tech types do not realize how _hard_ placement folk
work to get someone into a job.

It seems like free money when you see how much they added to your
contracting rate, or how much you hear they get paid per permanent
placement, but believe it or not it is a difficult job.

You _need_ to divorce personal feelings for each client from the equation.
It is easy to get paralyzed with I _need_ a job this week, or I lose my
house (my children are sick, my mother-in-law lives with us, etc), but you
cannot let it get to you. You need to be able to take 30 rejections in
stride, and swing just as hard, with as much patience and professionalism as
you did on the first. And you need to be able to

In the glory days of the dot com era it was an easy job. (pick one resume at
random from column a, match with one job opening from column b, profit!)

But companies (for the most part) are much smarter in their hiring. and tech
staff are much more skittish after bad experiences. So matchmaking is
important if you want any follow on placements.

The skillset that makes a good recruiter, in my opinion, are very specific.
As Rob mentions below, they need to leave the tech staff feeling decent
(even if turned down), need to leave the company feeling good (whether you
place a person or not, you still want them to keep your card for next time.
Because there will be a next time). You need for your recruiting company to
feel you are contributing. And you need to feel pretty good about what you
are doing (and how you are doing it) or the smudges on your soul get
overwhelming and over time very obvious to others.

I don't have the right skills, but I respect the skills in others and can
recognize people that do have it all when I meet them.

you have to provide proof to the State Department that you attempted to hire

I feel like many of the fishnet recruiters are collecting resumes for the
sole purpose of providing that proof. IE: there is no intent to actually
attempt to hire a citizen for the position.

I could be wrong about how the program works, but this is how it was
explained to me a few years ago.

interested in hearing about everyone's most popular/successful way of
 finding projects.

I currently get some work through my web site www.fasttrackonline.co.uk, but
not nearly as much as i would like to see. Traffic to my site has also
reduced considerably since the economic downturn, so I need to find other

I'd also very much appreciate any feedback on the web site.

We Do Three Types of Jobs Here…

2008-12-23 Thread Ravi Gehlot
At times, I get requests from people wanting me to build websites for
them. Such websites range from a simple layout, in css without any
server side scripting, to complex websites like those of social
networks. These same people want the work to be done in an unbelievably
short amount of time and with little to no budget. So I kept thinking on
how to approach these people and explain this would cost time and money
to deliver quality work. In turn, the old saying “A picture is worth a
thousand words” comes to mind and this picture surely explains my
feelings towards this situation.

Re: We Do Three Types of Jobs Here...

2008-12-23 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Vicky,

I wasn't able to find the presentation but I did find the notes of a
person(http://www.philduba.com/index.cfm/2008/6/21/CFUnited--Changing-the-Game)
who attended it. Here are his notes from the presentation Changing the
Games by Helms.

- Concentrating only on your rates = commoditizing yourself, at least
without adding value and/or establishing relationships
- Acquiring a new customer costs 6 times as much as keeping one
- put the best interests of clients first, even if it isn't in your
immediate best interests
- message you put out is the types of clients you will attract (ie., if
you say you build what is wanted and are cheap, those are the types of
clients you will get)
- build a portfolio before going off on own, take on jobs you have no
problem referring future clients too
- look deeper when responding to potential clients, keep their interests
at heart
- keep up to date on competition across the client's industry to see if
there are other ideas that may be applicable to a client's needs or
other things the competitors do not have
- get as much information about a client as you can before meeting with them
- remember that to a business person, software is expensive and risky.
ideally, you need to develop a process and/or methodology that helps to
mitigate the risk
- Great comment from the audience: customers want programs done good,
cheap, and quick and that most can only achieve two of the three
- help to define the risk about the project, make the customer realize
what could go wrong. it makes you stand out and differentiates yourself
from others
- goal is to be not just a commodity developer or coder, but become
someone they can rely on that has their interests in heart

Here is what I recommend you. Do not get stuck with just one

it is the one that offers the most jobs. If you know PHP really well

 Hi all,

My job will be ending sometime next year due to a merger. I'm a Senior
level CF Developer with 10+ years experience. I am wondering what the job
market is looking like out there for us senior type CF developers with the
economy the way it is here in the US.

What I'm concerned about most that I see is more job descriptions asking
 for
mid-level and junior developers, and lower salaries for those as well. I'm
wondering if I might have trouble finding a job when the time comes because
my salary demands would be too high and/or the employer would rather pay
someone a lower salary for less experience, thinking they are getting the
 same efficiency.

Please share whatever your thoughts are on this topic. I think this thread
will be useful for anyone visiting it in the next 12-18 months, so let's
really try to provide some good 'intel', if you will on the 'near future'
 CF

Re: Best ways to find projects

2008-12-22 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Jenny,

There are many ways to attract potential clients/projects. But
freelancing has its drawbacks as you might already know. I prefer a job
over freelancing because I get benefits and a steady pay. But back to
your question, in order for you to get more clients/projects you need to
build your presence on the Internet. It was a great idea of yours to
start your own business website. That's a great start but it will not
attract people(clients/projects) if it is not being advertised somehow.
So try to market your name or your business name (Fast Track Online).
For instance, your name(Jenny Gavin-Wear) is very powerful. Try to build
a BLOG and give people what they want. They want quality articles that
they can learn a bunch from. Try to get a domain name after your name
and build a BLOG. Thats where you will post articles and people will
read about it. If you can do that, you can build traffic. If you can
build traffic that trusts your information, you can build prospects that
may hire you later on. Take for instance my BLOG at
http://www.ravigehlot.net/ . I have been getting about 500 visits daily
just because I wrote 1 good article on SVN. My BLOG has only been around
for 3 weeks and it is already getting some attention. Yesterday, I had a
guy from France pay me $200 dollars to step up SVN for him. While, $200
dollars is not a lot of money, if more people ask me to do the same then
it will great. So blogging is one way to draw more projects/client.
However, bear in mind, put your heart into your blog. I mean, do it
with attention to detail not just to try to make money. Do it because
you can have fun with it too. My BLOG is sort of diary where I keep
everything I have been looking at lately. Try to get on Social News
networks like Digg, DZone, Delicious, StumbleUpon, Reddit. Also try to
get on Social Networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace and
Hi5. You will network with people that share yours interests and they
may need your services in the future.
Another way to draw more prospects is to try to rank well on the
search engines. This falls back on Search Optimization Techniques but
being able to be found on search engines is not enough. More and more
people are not reading text. What they is to experience and try your
services. So for Fast Track Online, you should try to build demo sites
and stuff that you have been doing. People will want to go back there to
test a feature you have done. Not to read the text. The text is good for
search engines to find you.

Good Luck,
Ravi Gehlot

Richard,

You can define your variables outside the onApplicationStart method.
However, they will not be on the application scope. Usually, what I do,
I set my DSN with the method onApplicationStart and then I set
this.name = 'ModelGolfLLC';
this.applicationTimeOut = createTimeSpan(0,1,0,0);
this.clientManagement = 'Yes';
this.loginStorage = 'session';
this.sessionManagement = 'Yes';
this.sessionTimeOut = createTimeSpan(0,0,60,0);
this.setClientCookies = 'Yes';
this.setDomainCookies = 'No';
this.scriptProtect = 'all';
all of these variables outside the method and this way it works.

That's interesting. I didn't know that, but I'm still not sure I'd want to

 Hello,

I didn't follow this thread closely. But I am curious as to what you
guys were discussing. How would I customize my webserver settings so
that .js files are parsed by CF and why would I want to do that? I know
that JS files are only text files and as far as I know there aren't any
 special settings to parse it.

It is possible to configure the web server and the ColdFusion
application server to pass *any* file to ColdFusion for processing other
then the default normal, cfm, cfc, cfr, etc file extensions. This is
sometimes done so that ColdFusion processes normal htm|html files,
usually for server obscurification, i.e. to hide that the server is
making use of ColdFusion. It can also be done to preserve established
links to an older html site that is converted to cfml.

It would be rather unusual to do this for JavaScript files, but it is
technically possible. The benefit is that you could have linked
JavaScript files dynamically built with CFML. The downside is that it
interferes with normal browser caching of linked script and|or style
files, the same thing can be done with CSS files. Sometimes it is worth
the trade off and|or there are ways to mitigate the downside with
 cfheaders... etc.

Sorry, not me personally. I have never actually had the need to do

my mind if the need should ever arise. I know there are Adobe knowledge
base and blog articles out there that lay out the process. That is
where I have read about it in the past. It is a bit more involved in
the Java based MX versions of ColdFusion then it was back in the pre-MX

2008-12-18 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Hello Pete,

It is interesting that you mentioned about the 64-bit ODBC drivers.
I was thinking about moving my server to a 64-bit platform. So I have
been asking around what people think of ColdFusion running on a 64-bit
platform. Most people say that it is faster especially if you have lots
of RAM memory. Which makes a lot of sense since RAM memory makes a big
difference. But these people have not complained about any of the
functionality of CF8 on a 64-bit.
I would think that CF8 for 64-bit would have everything that the CF8
for 32-bit has including all the ODBC drivers. What do you mean by
lack of drivers? Wouldn't those drivers come with CF8?

Please excuse my ignorance if any,
Ravi.

CF doesn't provide ODBC drivers at all. Those are provided by the
operating system. CF provides an ODBC-JDBC bridge, which lets you use
 those drivers from CF.

Immediate problem is whatever is grabbing the memory is not releasing it so
the GC can clean it up. Or the GC is ignoring it.

Exactly right - uncontrolled queries, etc. can all kill memory. I've been
watching the server with FusionReactor, have seen some of those issues, and
was able to get them fixed since it was obvious what thread was causing it.
Once I know the thread, I can find the developer and get the code changed.
What we need is some way to figure out excatly what memory is being
allocated where so when the memory pegs and holds (I'm talking forever), we
stand a shot at diagnosing the problem -- otherwise it is like finding a
 needle in a haystick.

FusionReactor is SeeFusion on steriods. Problem is that Fusion Reactor
monitors memory utilization but does not break it down by individual thread.
From what I've seen of SeeFusion -- i don't think it does either.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to enhance our current monitoring
capability with another cheap tool so we can identify the immediate issue
and possibly prevent it from occuring in the future by making it available
 on our development instance.

Hello Steve,

Set your table to accept NULL and wrap your cfquery around with a
cfif. This way, you will only run the query if you need to. You will
save unnecessary trips to the database if there is no value being passed
by the form variable.

Example:

cfparam name=FORM.alert default= /
cfif len(FORM.alert)
cfquery name=qryUpdate datasource=text
  update alert set
 alert = '#FORM.alert#'
  where alert = '#FORM.alert#'
/cfquery
cflocation url=../../status1.cfm?msg=succeed.
cfelse
cflocation url=../../status1.cfm?msg=fail.
/cfif

Also, make sure your method is set to POST on your form in order for the
form variables to be passed correctly.

Also, your table will not update if alert is not equal to FORM.alert.

Steve...just for your information. It is good practice and almost
imperative for your to use cfqueryparam with your cfquery to avoid sql
injection attacks. This is a security measure that you should start
getting yourself in the habit of doing it. Also, once you get this query
to update, look into cftry and cfcatch. Every time you make a trip to
the database, you are better off having a cftry/cfcatch around your
cfquery to catch on possible errors. It makes life easier when you need
to debug.

For now, I know you are trying to get this work but once you do get this
query to work, get back at me and I will show you some error handling
and security tips for your query.

Re: Simply Amin Panel

2008-12-18 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Robert,

You are right. If you default the value to NULL on the database,
NULL only comes into play when you first create a record. So you are
correct when you say that he can pass an empty string and it will be
empty and not NULL on the database. What you are saying is that the
query should run anyways because might want to just wipe out what he has
on the database opposed to inserting some other string or number. With
the code I had before, he would only run the query if he had value
length which makes it impossible to update it with an empty value.

Good Thought,
Ravi Gehlot.

Robert Bailey wrote:
 Ravi,

He can use an empty string '' if he does not want to use a NULL.

Your suggestion, to set the database to default to NULL would only apply
if he was doing an INSERT.

 Now think about this

What if the alert (in the database) was Help Me

Now he is on his form, he deletes help me to be empty in the text field,
and he wants this change to be reflected in the database.

With what you are suggesting, it will remain Help Me if he wipes it
out of the text field (or whatever he is using) since it would not update.

 Thanks!

Re: Simply Amin Panel

2008-12-18 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Steve,

Before you can update the database you need a match. What I mean by
a match is that you need to pass an ID to your query that matches that
of the record you wish to update.

Example:

cfif isDefined(alertId) and len(form.alert)
cfquery name=qryUpdate datasource=text
  update alert set
 alert = '#FORM.alert#'
  where alertId = '#FORM.alertId#'
/cfquery
/cfif

form name=updateForm method=post action=thisFile.cfm
AlertId: input type=text name=alertId value= /br /br /
   Alert: input type=text name=alert value= /br /br /
input type=submit value=submit /
/form

On the alertId text field, you will pass the Id that corresponds that of
the primary key of the row you wish to update on the database. So look
at your database and try to find the row you need to update. Let's say
that the row number is number 4. So you type number 4 on the form for
AlertId field. Then type some text for the Alert field and hit submit.

This should work without a problem.

Ravi.

Steve LaBadie wrote:
Sorry Ravi no dice. This should be a simple thing to do. There are no
errors when the page loads and no update to the DB.

Re: CFEclipse Show Line Numbers

2008-12-17 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Hello Phillip,

1) Locate the workspace directory for your projects
2) On your workspace directory, there is a subdirectory called .metadata
3) Go to
*.metadata\.plugins\org.eclipse.core.runtime\.settings\org.cfeclipse.cfml.prefs
*4) If org.cfeclipse.cfml.prefs is not present, go ahead and create it
5) insert lineNumberRuler = true

I found that the plugin XML Buddy tends to mess up CFEclipse. I
think that the two don't really go together.

Re: CF / Javascript question

2008-12-17 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Jenny,

Great question. It is not really easy to accomplish what you have in
mind. I understand that you want the user to scroll down in order to
show a button for continue. Dzone.com has a great example of how you can
scroll down using javascript. If you can get the position where it
stops, perhaps you can pass that as an argument to enable your button. I
am not sure how to do it though. This is just my thought. Check this
article for more information:
http://www.jaisenmathai.com/blog/2008/02/18/eliminate-paging-results-by-using-javascript-ala-dzone/

Just my $0.02 cents,
Ravi.

Jenny Gavin-Wear wrote:
 Hi all,

In a registration procedure, I need to do a verification that the person
registering has read a large piece of text.

The way I thought about doing is is with a scrolling div area which enables
a continue to next page option when the user has scrolled to the bottom of
 the text.

How could I best go about this using CF and/or javascript, please?

 Grateful for any ideas ...

Re: CTO Opportunity

2008-09-26 Thread Ravi Gehlot
Just my $0.02 cents.

Aaron,

The problem begins when you try to find a job while still on a job.
If your boss finds out that you are indeed on the look out for a new
opportunity then it may sparkle misunderstandings and misconceptions. I
had a friend once that did really well on his project and he had gotten
bonuses and all the good stuff. The contract was at its final stage and
he needed to make more money because his wife was pregnant with twins.
It so happens that he sent an e-mail to a mailing list of which his boss
was also a subscriber. The e-mail had information about his skills, a
link for his resume and that he was looking for a new opportunity to
make more money. His resume was open to the public.. His boss called him
5 minutes after he sent that e-mail and cursed him to death saying that
it was unethical to say that my friend was not well paid after all the
bonuses and everything. It sparkled so much trouble that he got out of
the company.
Indeed, my friend had done his job well. The project had been 95%
delivered and he was looking for a better opportunity. With his wife
pregnant, it was a perfect time to look for a new chance to make more
money. Instead, because of a misunderstanding with having his public
resume open to the public, he ended in a bad situation. His boss later
told him that it will be harder to find programmers because people may
think that he does not pay well. Whih in part, is true.

Just my $0.02 cents,
Ravi.

I am not sure what Mr. Vincent is trying to accomplish by sending these kind
of e-mails but I can talk for my own experience. I have worked with
recruiting companys like Robert Half Technology, Signature Consulting,
TekSystems, AppleOne among others and all I have to say to the recruiters is
THANK YOU. They went out of their way to help me get a job. Besides they
were patient enough to help me get my resume right. They even spoke in my
behalf to work a deal and they sure did their job well.

Up to this day I have good friends in the recruiting business. People that
take me not only as a professional but also as a collegue and partner. If
someone had a bad experience with recruiting companys then fine. There is
always 2 sides of a coin but do not come on a mailing list saying all kind
of nonsense about people that actually tried to help you out when you needed
the most.

You never know.

Thanks, RG.

 I've been using 3.4M6 ( http://phoenix.eclipse.org/packages/ ), the EE

Some great improvements have been made in many places.

I think cfeclipse needs to be installed as a drop in, which is the
new way of installing plugins the old way (much cleaner).

Holler if you've got any questions. There's a link for equinox
somewhere around here (the new plugin update manager).

Business Venture

2008-05-01 Thread [STS] Ravi Gehlot
I am interested in starting my own business once again doing hosting but the
main goal here is to have a server in which we have total access and own it.
Also, the goal is to focus on web development rather than hosting.

The person(s) interested in the venture should be able to come up with money
as well.

The server cost, the monthly cost and also a license for ColdFusion. We
could stick with Linux for the time being using Webmin as the web panel.

Is anyone interested in the venture? You can email me at

I have a list I obtained from export ldap members out of a ldap directory
 in
LDIF format that looks like this:

 memberUserName: John Doe
 memberAge: 34
 memberLocation: US
 memberEmail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  memberUserName: Mary Doe
 memberAge: 44
 memberLocation: US
 memberEmail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

  memberUserName: Jack Doe
 memberAge: 86
 memberLocation: US
 memberEmail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I need to import this list of almost 18,000 members onto an SQL database.
 So
what I want to do is to convert this LDIF file into one big list pipe
delimited, then loop through it and add it to the database. So I got:

 1) File is read
 cffile action=read variable=cffileRead
 file=#expandPath(/imports/testList.ldif)# /

 2) Replace all new lines for commas
 cfset newLine = chr(13) chr(10) /
 cfset commaList = replace(cffileRead, newLine, ',', 'All' /

Question here: How do I replace all EMPTY (BLANK LINES) like the ones
 between memberUserName for pipes?

faster because it reads a whole block instead of reading tag by tag. Well,
the code doesn't work because it says that the cflocation is an undefined

 processing each tag individually.

Re: Using tags with CFSCRIPT

2008-04-14 Thread [STS] Ravi Gehlot
Hi Dominic,

Thank you for clarifying this whole thing. I had done a couple of
searches on Google and I didn't read anything about creating an UDF.
Obviously creating an UDF for this matter is not necessary when you can use
cfswitch and cfcase but for the sake of learning lets say I were to create
these UDFs; Where would I place these UDFs so that whenever I needed them I
could just call the function?

Ravi.

  cflocation(theURL:'brightWebWorks.com/')

cflocation is a tag, not a function. To do the cflocation from within a
cfscript block you will need to create a UDF. I.e.

 cffunction name=scriptLocation
  cfargument name=location
  cfargument name=addToken required=false default=false

  cflocation url=#arguments.location# addtoken=#arguments.addtoken#
 /cffunction

 Then, in your script block:

 switch(cgi.http_host) {
  case 'www.brightWebWorks.com':
   scriptLocation('brightWebWorks.com/');
  break;

 }

Yeh, I often use UDFs for this kind of thing where I want to use cfscript
but there is the odd tag I need to use but I doubt you'd ever get a google
result for this kind of thing.

For UDFs, I usually create a folder in my project called '_udfs' and have
 a
single cfm file for each udf. Then, in the page that needs to use the udf,
 just include the file. So:

 cfinclude template=/_udfs/scriptLocation.cfm
 cfscript
 switch(cgi.http_host) {
  case 'www.brightWebWorks.com http://www.brightwebworks.com/':
  scriptLocation('brightWebWorks.com/');
  break;

 }
 /cfscript

I don't think so because then you would have to call them with:

 myUDFsObject.udfName()

 As opposed to just:

 udfName()

You could just include all your udfs in application.cfc in
 OnRequestStart()
using a regular cfinclude. Putting the functions in a cfc is perfectly
 valid
though and will work (I just don't like to use cfcs in this way).

Hi Raymond,

I am just being cheap. But the workaround with cfswitch/case works
for now with HMS and it lets me have multiple domains in a shared hosting
account. I don't have any hard feelings towards HMS; They have been good to
me. But I would imagine that the cheat would only work with IIS validating
hostnames. In my case, it doesn't validade letting me use different domains.
Weird. Any insights?

While it may not be true for CFMX 7 8 it was a documented best practice

I spoke to a couple of my senior developer friends and they told me
that back in the days of CF5 cfscript was faster than tags but that doesn't
hold true with CF7 and 8 so it doesn't really matter. I prefer to code in

Re: weird issue in browser with cf8 and long execution times

It is weird that it asks you to save the index.cfm file. The only time I had
that problem was when IIS was not configured to open CFM files. Same had
happened with Apache. But since you are saying that the process are running
on the background with data being inserted into the database it makes me
think that this is not a problem of adding CFM to IIS/Apache Index
Directory.

  I am running CF8 Standard.

I am running a page that takes a few minutes to run. After a certain
amount of time a gray box will popup and ask me to save the index.cfm
 file
or open it. When I open it or save it the file is always blank.

When this happens it looks like the page is done executing in the
 browser
but if you look in the task manager you see that JRUN is still using the
CPU. I have also confirmed that the page is still running by doing a
refresh in Navicat which shows that more rows are being added to the
  database table.

The page is reading an XML file, parsing it and then looping over to
 insert
  data into the database.

Has anyone seen this before or know what I need to do to stop it from
  happening?

  Thanks!

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-08 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Hey Mike,

You are right. But the TRIAL version did the conversion. So thanks
to Sean Corfield for pointing that out. However, I am not happy yet. I
don't want to use that software, I want to write the XML myself. What is
the fun of having a software do the job? I have been doing a lot of
reading on XML.

Ravi.

Mike Kear wrote:
Strictly speaking it's not free, but you might already have MS Excel.
Later versions can save as XML.

If you have such a version, you could read your CSV file in to excel,
 then save it as XML.

from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Hi,

I was asked to convert a CSV file to XML. Is there free a converter
out there? Also, is there a free XML plugin for Eclipse?

Ravi.

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Hey Sean,

If I use CFHTTP to produce a query from that CSV file what other
tool could I use to generate the file. You are completely correct when
you say that the question didn't make any sense since with XML we can
produce our own tags depending on the type of content structure given.
But using CFHTTP to produce the query from the CSV file is quite
possible and then having it imported some how in XML format. I never
used the CFWDDX tag so will research on that. Also, is XMLBuddy free?
Didn't find it for FREE.

Ravi.

Since XML can have any format, that question doesn't really make
sense. Conversion of CSV to XML is going to depend on what format XML
you want to produce. For example, you *could* use CFHTTP to read in
the CSV file as a query and then convert that to simple XML by any
number of tricks. Heck, you could use CFWDDX to turn the query into
very basic XML but I wouldn't like the output much.

Also, is there a free XML plugin for Eclipse?

Yes. XML Buddy is the one I use but there may be others.

Cool, so I got the query successfully in the memory. It works just as
nice as I thought it would. How do I go about generating the whatever
XML I need?

YES! Thank you for pointing out XMLBuddy. I downloaded and placed it on
my plugins directory and then re-started Eclipse and then XML was
immediately available for use.

Once you have a query in memory, you can easily generate whatever XML
you need from it in a few lines of CFML.

 Also, is XMLBuddy free?

Yes, That's why I recommended it when you asked for a *free* plugin :)

How could I better answer your question? Could you be more specific?

The XML needs to be one that it can be used to import those delimited
column fields in the previous XML file. I know you might be
thinking...well...why don't they just import it to the SQL database.
Well, that's the boss that wants it in XML. He got his reasons.

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Hey Dave,

Is there a list of specific XML languages? They company has a portal
that knows how to treat XML data so it let's the end user upload an XML
file that is then imported into a SQL database through their portal.

Ravi.

To elaborate on this a little bit, XML isn't a language. Saying you want
something in XML doesn't really make sense. What you really want is
something in some specific XML language. XML is essentially a meta-language
 - a set of rules for building a language. You would have to determine the
specific XML language you want to use - or create your own - to get where
 you need to go.

You are right that XML is not a language, it is rather a format, a
format able to represent about anything.
But Ravi told use he has a CSV file he wants to be formated in XML.
For me it is clear: a CSV file is a format to represent a table.
A table can be formated in XML, and there are not thousands of ways to
 represent a table in XML.

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Aaron,

I want to choose a format and get this done by Monday. They want to
see something done by Monday. Whether it will work or not with the
Portal I will have to see it with them on Monday. I understand that the
Portal understands a type of XML construct and it will brake if another
fashion is used. I just want to format it in XML so they know I know
what I am doing. Later on Monday, I can adapt it to what it needs to be.
There will be a meeting and I will bring this up.
It was a piece of work so far to get where I got. First, the CSV
file was delimited by pound signs so I had to use the replace function
to replace it with commas then to REreplace it to get rid of unwanted
spaces. Before this replace could be possible CFDIRECTORY and CFFILE was
used to read only CSV type of files. Then CFHTTP was used to read the
delimited CSV file and build a query in memory. All I need is to use
that query in memory built from CFHTTP to build an XML file. Any
suggestions?

Ravi.

Aaron Rouse wrote:
There are a few ways to do this and a simple google search should return

Hey Claude,

That helps. Thanks! CFHTTP is already in use. What would WDDX stand
for? Just curious...gotta google. it.

Ravi.

Claude Schneegans wrote:

I would rather try to read the table using CFHTTP to build a query,
although CFHTTP will not read ANY CSV format.

Then have a look at the tag cfwddx action = CFML2WDDX
This would convert the query to a WDDX format which is actually XML-based .

Re: from CSV to XML

Hey Sean,

Yes, I am a beginner in the ColdFusion world. You shouldn't be
worried about providing me the straight solution so that I could get
by. If you think that my interest here is to get by using your knowledge
then please deviate from this thinking. My sole goal is to learn and
become a better programmer. What may seem simple and straight forward
for you may not be for others. So I would say don't worry about baking
the cake so I can eat it alone. I know how to find my food.

Sincerely,
Ravi.

You really should check the ColdFusion docs more often. CFHTTP lets
you specify the delimiter in the file - it doesn't have to be comma,
it could be pound sign. You're just making work for yourself.

delimited CSV file and build a query in memory. All I need is to use

You're just being lazy. Use Google as others have suggested and
 several solutions will be evident.

Assuming you know how to loop over a query, producing *some* format of
XML ought to be trivial for you.

The code is so simple that anyone who provides it for you is
essentially writing your project for you - hence my comment about your
 homework.

Is it fair to say you are a complete beginner with programming and/or
ColdFusion? I ask in all seriousness so that we can establish what
level of help is appropriate. So far people have been pretty patient
with you but what you're trying to do is extremely simple and you
don't seem prepared to do any work on your side to provide more
details about what you need from us...

In my first response to you in this thread I suggested CFHTTP and
CFWDDX as possible solutions. You can learn and become a better
programmer by looking them up in the documentation and seeing whether
they fit your needs. That will also tell you what WDDX stands for.

I know this seems to belabor the point but the documentation provided
with ColdFusion is really very good. The Reference Manual is good for
basic stuff like figuring out the attributes on tags but the
Developer's Guide is a tremendous resource for learning about many
common tasks in ColdFusion. And it's free! It comes with the product.
You can also read all the documentation online, either on
 http://livedocs.adobe.com or http://cfquickdocs.com/ (which a lot of
 people prefer for reference material).

And then there's Google. Let's ask Google:

 http://www.google.com/search?q=generate+XML+from+coldfusion+query

The third response is this one:

 http://www.developer.be/index.cfm/fuseaction/tutorialDetail/GroupID/71/tutorialName/Generating_XML_with_ColdFusion_-_A_Rough_Guide.htm

(watch line wrap on the URL)

Let's ask Google a simpler question:

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Aaron,

You are right on that. I will ask them the proper format. It is
useless to put time into something and then change it later. Maybe I
wasn't clear here but all I want is to know how to do it so that when I
get there on Monday it be easier.

Thanks,
Ravi.

Aaron Rouse wrote:
Sorry, but I do not think you know how to find your food because the
questions you are asking could VERY EASILY be answered via some google
 searches.

If it does not matter if what you do works with the portal or not then just
take any of the available web based examples for building XML via CFM and
modify the example to work with the data you have via your data file. Of
course that makes no sense to do, you should just be able to show the
managers the web based examples and prove to them that yes it can be done
then ask for more information on how things should be formated so you could
 then make a working example.

You really should check the ColdFusion docs more often. CFHTTP lets

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Wow! This makes a lot more sense now Dave. So the WDDX from the CFWDDX
means the type of XML struct used.

Great.

Thanks,
Ravi.

Dave Watts wrote:
But Ravi told use he has a CSV file he wants to be formated in XML.
For me it is clear: a CSV file is a format to represent a table.
A table can be formated in XML, and there are not thousands
of ways to represent a table in XML.

Sure there are. I can think of several offhand; WDDX, the Query object
returned by invoking a SOAP CFC, and the .NET representation of a recordet
 in XML.

I have to say THANK YOU! I got the file converted in seconds with

know how the XML file needs to look like. I won't sleep tonight till I
read and learn about XML. Will try the ColdFusion tags also.

Re: from CSV to XML

2007-07-07 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Cool. That's why they say that XML is not a language but a
meta-language. Unlike HTML that it has its own tags, XML can have tags
created by the developer accordingly by creating DTD or schemas.

Ravi.

Dave Watts wrote:
Is there a list of specific XML languages?

No, because anyone can create their own language by creating a DTD or
 schema.

They company has a portal that knows how to treat XML data
so it let's the end user upload an XML file that is then
imported into a SQL database through their portal.

You will need to learn their language.

Re: Server Error

2007-06-23 Thread [Sunshine Tech Solutions] Ravi Gehlot
Hey Pete,

Check to see if your version of access works fine with ColdFusion 7.0.2.
Sometimes, you have to download a special driver and install it on your
ColdFusion directory so that your datasources may work ok.

Just a thought,
Ravi.

these I get the following error.

IO error on server communication. Basically it doesnt seem to be able to
browse to folders on the server.

I have googled this and found information on the Adobe website saying I had
to make a change to the web.xml file in the web-inf folder.

I checked this file and it looked fine.

 I'm stumped on this one.

Just wondering if anyone else might have experienced this problem and if so
 how they resolved it.

I can set up datasource if its a MySQL database.

 Thanks in advance for feedback.

Pete,

You can also try to connect to your datasource using a JDBC driver
like this:

jdbc:odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb)};DBQ=[Full path to
your database file];DriverID22;

I dont think its an access problem - it was working with CF7.02 previously
without any problems. I think it has to be a CF7-Vista issue and quite
likely a CF error or permission setting. I get the same error message when
I try to browse for files when trying to set up mappings.
