Hi Folks

I would affirm kickAssVps, I was with them for several years and got great
responsive service.

However for business reasons, which I totally understand, they are not
upgrading to CF11.

I moved to www.viviotech.net/ and because I am not all that literate in the
server and condfusion administration arena purchased the extended support
and I couldn't be happier, the crew their have been really great.

Been with them for years; very little trouble; always quick with support.

They even tailor VPS's for me.

Lots of great responses... Like I said I really hate the idea of moving. The
VPS sounds interesting and I believe Hostek offers that as well as
dedicated.

I have a pretty large SQL Server database with them now for my largest
client and its probably going to grow. I only have about 25 domains 1 of
them is on a Linux server the rest are all Windows CF servers. I am also
getting ready to add another one.

I guess I can check into it and see what cost would be... the last thing I
need to do is increase my overhead. Right now I am paying Hostek about
$130/m for just the basic CF hosting for the 25 domains not counting the
adons and database cost.

I would also want to make the transition as seamless as
possible...preferably my clients know nothing about the move.

Does VPS handle everything? MSSQL Database, SmarterMail or just the websites
with Coldfusion?

I guess a lot of these questions I should be asking Hostek...

Could not agree more with Russ' comments on CF hosting in his blog. I'll
never go back to shared hosting. I've got a couple of Viviotech VPS' that
I'm pretty happy with. One runs my personal stuff and old web site from
when I was a developer. Another runs about 30 low-traffic sites that work
with my business. A VPS is a great step up if you aren't ready to take the
plunge and pay for a full-on server. Insofar as full-on servers are
concerned, nothing can match the hardware that you get at Cybercon, but then
again you are also expected to pretty much be self-sufficient, there.

Think about doing a VPS instead of shared hosting. Just for starters you
get to keep all the hosting fees.

RE: Is time for a change?

2014-11-07 Thread Rick Eidson

Oh I know all about the email hosting.. .Before I moved to Hostek I had a T1
line into my basement. Did all my own hosting, I had 2 server cabinets with
all Dells...(I still have them) pretty good setup. I started my company with
that and then the T1 became outdated and very expensive. I used ArgoSoft
Mail Server, actually really liked it but the SPAM and Blacklist were a
nightmare. But back then my company was bigger with closer to 100
domains/clients. I formed a partnership with another person who pretty much
screwed me over. We split up the company (lost a lot of clients in the
breakup) and I formed Eidson Empire, LLC. and moved to Hostek for my
provider.

I still not sure what I am going to do.. I think the VPS will be more than I
can afford right now. Maybe if I land about 10 more clients I can justify
it.

Ideally you need 1 VPs for each service, web db and mail, plus you would
need a smartermail license, unless hostek are a bundle provider in which
case you can get a free 250 user license with the VPS.
Running a mail server is way more work than people realise though, it is not
just keeping it running, it is deal with spam, spoofing, back scatter, black
listing, spf and domain key issues and more.
One alternative is to use zohomail which is free for basic service.
At the end of the day shared hosting is like going to the $1 store in
comparison, so you get what you pay for.

WordPress to ColdFusion

2014-03-23 Thread Rick Eidson

So I have a client that is in a WordPress Site but we are moving to a
customized site using ColdFusion.

I am going to use the database that WP used.

So my problem.

The br tag. WordPress's editor will remove the BR tag and it doesn't store
it in the database. Now I have done some research to find out how to stop
WP from doing this. BUT there are over 2000 post and like I said. we are
moving to CF.

What I do not understand is when the post is output to the WP site and you
look at the source the BR tags are there. They aren't in the database. So
obviously they aren't in CF Output either.

I do not see any replaced ascii or other in it's place. Somehow it seems the
WP knows where the BR tag is supposed to be even though it isn't in the
database.

Is this confusing?

Text Messages with CF

2012-07-29 Thread Rick Eidson

For about 5 years I have been running open jam nights and I have collected a
lot of phone numbers and each jam I send out reminder text message.. I did
this on my android but now I am on IPhone and I have the IPad as well. I
have downloaded and purchased a few apps that allow me to send text messages
to a group of contacts but they only seem to work for contacts using Iphones
or contacts that have the same program.

So I thought it would be much easier if I could go to a website log in and
send it out just like I was sending an email.

I would like this to be private and on my own site. Does anyone know of a CF
Tag that can do this? I found some stuff that I can probably develop around
to do what I want but I thought I would check here first before I spend the
time.

Thanks

But why does it need to be a full Access database? Providing a delimited
file users could import is simpler and more flexible. As it could be
imported into both Excel and Access.

I asked the same question... It's political and we's IT people don't not
know what were talkin bout...

One of the groups we are providing the data to developed their system with
an old Access Database... Not only do I have to provide it in Access I have
to make sure the each table has the fields in the same order, the same data
types and even if the column name is in CAPS I have to do so to... For the

You can seed a database with the schema then access it through passthrough
file syntax... .a single prepared temp DB could do the trick.

Basically you have a dummy access DSN setup, then you copy your prepped
access file to a temp location, load it with data using the passthrough
method, and then allow the user to download it (I usually zip it first).
Here's a link to a post on the passthrough method.

http://www.coldfusionmuse.com/index.cfm/2005/6/3/dsn_cfmx

While I agree with you about a CSV file in many cases, Leigh, sometimes this
is useful for exactly the reasons you are suggesting - that extra access
stuff allows you to create form interfaces, premade queries etc - enhancing
off line data mining for the user.

just seems like more than I need to do.

I do not think so. It is not like exporting html/excel. An Access database
consists of more than just the data itself (system tables, etcetera). So I
am not sure there is a simpler way. Maybe using ms sql's export tools ..

But why does it need to be a full Access database? Providing a delimited
file users could import is simpler and more flexible. As it could be
imported into both Excel and Access.

CFQuery to mdb

2011-01-05 Thread Rick Eidson

I want to output the results to a MSAccess database file. I can output the
results to a xls file pretty easily but I need to create a database and save
the results to a table.

I thought about creating a temp blank database and then creating the table,
writing the data to it then copy the database down, deleting the database
and writing a blank one just seems like more than I need to do.

Subject: Recommended Shopping Cart

Hi -

I have a client that will be selling products, likely from multiple
suppliers. I've programmed a CF extranet that will spit out a coupon code
based on the number of points people accrue in the system. I need to
integrate the coupon code, and list products by supplier where shipping rate
taxes are handled effectively. I don't want to work with a crappy system,
and if possible, would prefer the cart be written in CF, but I suppose
that's not required. Budget is open depending on what impresses me as I'll
be the one deploying it and potentially teaching low-skilled computer people
how to use some of the basics.

On the low end, in terms of pricing, I've recently taken a brief look at
CFShopKart, and from what I can tell thus far, it looks to be supported and
may provide me with what I'm looking for since I can modify as I wish. Which
shopping cart / ecommerce systems do you all use? If the cart is not
developed with CF, (most seem to be Php), have you needed to communicate
with the cart via any of your CF applications?

Thank you,
Dakota

CF Report Builder

2010-04-14 Thread Rick Eidson

Anyone here any good at report builder?

I have a sub-report that needs to run a DISTINCT Query and loop over its
output and run another query to get more info from the DISTINCT values from
the first. Easy to do on CFM page and in many different ways. But I can't
seem to get it to work in Report Builder.

Under ReportQuery's Advanced area I have the following.

The BillReview ID is passed in the URL String..

cfquery name=QryGet datasource=#App_DataSource#

SELECT DISTINCT tblBillItems.ReasonCode

FROM tblBillItems

WHERE tblBillItems.BillHeaderID = '#BillReviewID#'

/cfquery

cfset Output =

cfloop query=QryGet

cfquery name=QryGetDesc datasource=#App_DataSource#

SELECT BillItemReasonDescription

FROM tblBillItemReasons

WHERE BillItemReasonCode = '#ReasonCode#'

/cfquery

cfset OutPut = #OutPut#br

#ReasonCode# #QryGetDesc.BillItemReasonDescription#

/cfloop

Any ideas? I have looked all through many sites and see know help on
advanced abilities of Report Builder.

RE: CFPOP/CFX_POP3

2005-04-03 Thread Rick Eidson
Looks like I got some work to do...

My mail server is ArgoSoft and I can build server extensions for it I wonder
if I can get the server to actually do this. I do not want to slow down the
web mail client anymore. The new version of ArgoSoft has an RSS feed built
in so it makes it very fast to download mail. The only time I use
CFPOP/CDX_POP is for attachments. If I have to do anymore email processing I
think I will defeat the purpose of using the feed.

Anyone else already built something that uses the TNEF?

Is this something Macromedia will look into?

Ben, any thoughts?

Hi Rick,

I'm afraid it isn't something that would allow me to update CFX_POP3 however
this ne could actually be used in CFPOP if MM so chose to build it in :)

On the other hand, I have found a component that will work with CFX_POP3
however it still requires some work as it has been neglected for about 6
years and is not compatible with CFX_POP3 straight out of the box so to
speak...

Going back to the jar file you have installed, you will need to look out for
the winmail.dat files in the attachments field that CFPOP and CFX_POP3
generate and then instantiate the tnef decoder object using a UDF or CFC to
wrap up the funcionality of the jar file that you now have in your
classpath.

Essentially the UDF/CFC would read the attachment into a filestream and then
pass it to the TNEFInputStream class to decode it and let you manipulate the
attachments that are held within the .dat file.

This may be the reseon behind the JRUN errors on win 2003.

Re: cfmail only works internally

2004-06-21 Thread Rick Eidson
Go into the CF Admin and add the IP address of the local Server. Then
you do not need to specify the server in the CFMAIL tag.

If you are behind a firewal running NAT then you may have a
192.168.0.* IP address this would be the Local IP address. The
External IP would be the one that the visitors see from OutSide the
firewall.

For expample I have a server with the IP 192.168.0.74 but you would go
to 65.16.30.74 and the firwall/Router would redirect the request to
the internat IP.

RE: sql error

2002-05-15 Thread Rick Eidson

Did you creat the table in one database and upload it to your SQL using an account?
look at the DB owner.

example:

Create a table in SQL has the name dbo.tablename
Create table in local SQL or Access and import/Export it you get username.tablename

RE: Any one know where to find the RDS data sources in WDMX

Along the same line. In CF Studio I could create a query in Query Builder
and it would save it in the RDS. In WDMX I am using the Binding-RecordSet.
If I remove the query from the document it removes it from the RDS.

My Coldfusion Studio had a tab in the lower left that made it so I could
look at tables and views in my data sources which really helped with
queries to not have too rewrite them.

Has anyone found a way to get that functionality back in DWMX?

Otherwise, I am really coming around to liking this new step.

RE: parameterexists

2002-04-24 Thread Rick Eidson

ISDifined / ParameterExists

ParameterExists meens you do not know if it will be there or not.

ISDifined meens you know it is there but is it difined.

Think of a dictionary then remove the definitions but leave the words. You
know they are words but you don't know what they are or what to do with
them.

Example;

IN your FORM
Run a query to list all the possible values as checkbox's Notice the removal
of the dash's.

input type=checkbox
name=Values#Replace(QryGetValues.ValuesGUID,'-','','all')# value=1

ON the Action page run the same query and loop through it.
cfloop query=QryValuesJobs
  cfif
IsDefined(form.Values#Replace(QryGetValues.ValuesGUID,'-','','all')#)
 cfquery datasource=SQL name=QryValuesBatch
INSERT INTO A_Table
   (NewGUID, ValuesGUID)
VALUES (NewID(),'#QryGetValues.ValuesGUID#')

There are plenty of CFX tags out there that do this. I'm not saying we
shouldn't do it - just that solutions exist already. :)

 locking:
Needs to protect the server. Period.

Sure - the answer is to use locking - but I'm assuming your saying that
we _shouldnt_ need locking for server stability. There will _always_ be
a need for logical type locks.

 cfdirectory:
Please just give us one more attribute (filesonly=True,

 use the tag.

Hey, just use startrow=3 when looping. ;)

I'm not even sure this is a possilbilty and it's probably
a little early to call for it, but something to think about.

Um - you mean writing C#? Why? That's like asking for Perl support. Why
not just use perl.exe?

Does anyone know of a CFX tag, COM object, or other component that will be
able to convert TIFF images to searchable PDF documents on the fly? I think
it goes without saying, but I would like to accomplish this task using
ColdFusion. The TIFF files will reside locally on the server and I would
like to use a nightly scheduled batch process to convert all documents to
searchable PDF files. I have downloaded and installed an ActiveX component
called ScanButton that claims to do what I need, but I am receiving an error
message when attempting to run it. Also, I am aware of several other
options, such as Adobe Capture 3.0, so I am really looking for anyone with
experience or direction a component and some CF code samples. That is
ending up as the hardest item in this search. Thank You.

RE: Paypal Subscriptions...

I dumped Paypal.

They blocked my account for a filed dispute that was settled months earlier.
Took money out of my account a gave it to someone else without verifying
that it wasn't settled. Then wanted me to put more money in so they could
give them more. But my account was blocked so I couldn't nor would I. Then
they said They couldn't reverse it the person just needed to send the money
back to my account. But it was blocked so he couldn't. He sent me a money
order and the day after I got it they sent him an email threatening to turn
him into collection if he didn't return the money to my account. We both
emailed them and finally they opened my account up and closed the issue.
They didn't even say sorry.

Hi all-

I've a customer who is likely going to go with Paypal for recurring
subscriptions (thanks to all who gave suggestions for solutions), which upon
investigation looks like a pretty robust service, and about the cheapest
I've found. I was wondering if any of you have implemented it, and whether
or not you've used their IPN (Instant Payment Notification) stuff. It looks
like you need to implement a Perl script on the server, which I'm trying to
avoid, because I've never configured ActivePerl on a Win2K box (properly)
before. Anyone know if there are alternatives?

Anyone have any thoughts or comments on using this service? Good or bad,
all advice is welcome.

RE: CFMail does not send email externally

If relaying is not alowed you can not send email from a domain that is not
on the Email server. If it I IIS SMTP add the server IP address to the
relaying permissions.

RE: html email / newsletters

2002-03-15 Thread Rick Eidson

You can personalize the messages and if you have profiles you will be able
to use direct marketing.

We have a journalist community that was a Yahoo group. I built a website in
CF and now run the news letters through it.

http://www.blueear.com

We have profiles for each member and the news letters are addressed to each.
From there profiles we can tell if they are into sports or computers. Then
the advertisers we sell for the newsletter are directed to a mermbers
profile.

Hi
The text below is randomly appearing at the top of some of my web
pages:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0 Date: Thu, 28 Feb 2002
17:45:56

Feb
2002 17:44:15 GMT ETag: 90e1e5897fc0c11:1df0 Content-Length: 1991537
What is this? This text seems to appear only when I am using CFLocation
to
redirect to a static html page that I created through CFHTTP, and it
occurs
randomly.
However, I've learned through testing that if I use a Meta Refresh
instead
of a CFLocate, text does not appear (i.e. problem solved). However, I
am
still curious as to what is going on. Plus, I like CFLocate better (no
clicking in I.E. when page is redirected) Can anyone tell me what this
is
and how to guarantee its absence from my page?
Below is my cfhttp code that generates the page the first time it
accessed.
CFHTTP
METHOD = get
URL=#request.ServerPath#/index.cfm?fuseaction=getCard#parms#
PATH=e:\#request.root#\Cache
FILE=cache#NewID#.html
If the page is called is accessed again, Cflocation accesses the cached
version of the page, and sometimes that wierd header shows up:
CFIF CheckCache.RecordCount
   cflocation url=/cache/#checkcache.file#
.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi Reed,

Sounds like you're going to want to run multiple websites, not just
virtual directories. You say Win2K, as long as it is not Pro you'll be
fine. In the IIS administrator you'll want to add a new web site.

In the second page of the new website configuration process you'll be
asked for the IP, TCP Port and the host header for the web site. The
host header is the field you seem to be asking about. You can set that
value to whatever you need and then all requests to your IP and for
whatever domain you place in the Host Header will be answered by this
website.

To edit an existing site, right click on the site and load the site's
properties. On the Web Site tab with the address information is an
Advanced... button. That is where you can edit the host headers after
they've already been loaded and you need to change them.

Subject: OT: Setting up IIS to parse domain name?

Well, we're trying to move into the 20th century finally, by moving our
shared Intranet CF/webserver box from NT4 and WebsitePro to Win2K and
IIS. I'd like to try and make it a better world for the users as
well, but I'm stumped.

On the NT4/WebsitePro server we have each site setup as a virtual
directory. We also have a couple of DNS aliases setup so that users of
each app can see a domain name that makes sense to them, but in reality
we could swap those aliases around and it wouldn't matter, since they
all point to the same canonical DNS name, and it's the /BLAH that comes
after it that gets the users to the correct virtual directory.

I know (but cannot seem to figure out how to make it happen) that
Win2K/IIS5 can parse the domain name info that comes over from the HTTP
request, and use it to determine which IIS website to go to to find the
user's page. That would be great, because sometimes users leave off
that
/BLAH, and end up in some other guy's website, all confused and upset.
If IIS can look at the URL coming in on the HTTP request and say Aha,
THISAPP.BLAH.BLAH.BLAH refers to website THISAPP then that would be
what I'm trying to do.

Vanna, I need to buy a vowel. Anyone out there have a
vowel? I've been up one site of the IIS menus and down the other, and
nothing seems to work.

Can this capability point to a virtual directory, or just to
a website under IIS?

thanks for the help that I know will be coming!

There's two tags in the developers exchange - CFX_Sleep and CF_aSleep.

CFX_Sleep is free, but I don't really want to go to the bother of

CF_aSleep is $5, and claims: Will delay execution of the current

CONSUME MINIMAL SYSTEM RESOURCES while sleeping.

Has anyone used this tag? I don't mind forking out the $5 (actually $10

Could someone please explain how the permissions and users work for
this?
Should I create a user in SQL server
to connect with? Any help is much appreciated.

Subject: Vertical Text

Any ideas on how I might display text vertically using either CF or CSS?
Without stacking the letters using br's and without creating graphics.
The text displayed vertically will be dynamic... it's looking like it might
not be possible...? Thanks!

Backup Database

2001-06-06 Thread Rick Eidson

I have a Web Server and a SQL server in Vegas and a SQL database in Kansas
City. The KC database is the main SQL.

What is the easiest way to have the Web Server point to the Backup SQL if
the main SQL is not available? Can this be done in DNS?

RE: Server at 100% problem

2001-01-03 Thread Rick Eidson

I have been having the same problem. For quick fix I reinstalled the CF4.5.1
upgrade. But it kept coming back. The last time I downloaded the CF SP2 and
I haven't had the problem again (been about 3 weeks).

Subject: Server at 100% problem

OK, here the problem...

I've got 3 servers all running the same code, but one of them hits 100%
regularly and stays there (thus killing the CF sites on the server)

I've got in the Server Settings;
Timeout requests after 30 seconds
Restart at 10 unresponsive requests

Yet it still hangs regularly...

Can anyone shed any light on how I can stop this, especially since it's
exactly the same code as on 2 servers which don't have this problem...

BTW, I've been through the code and can't find any endless loops, or code
which should kill the server... but I'm not sure if I can find anything in
the logs which will tell me what's causing the problem
