[cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup
I really enjoyed CFCAMP today, it was my first CF thang since the MX 7 launch and it was really worth the effort. Nice to put faces to names and see a decent crowd of people turn up. I thought Peter Bell's talk was the highlight for me talking about code generation and DSL's. Andrew, I agree about the CF8 lag on AJAX libraries being a major concern, but at least we can trust that when they upgraded, existing code will still just work :) Thanks to all the people who presented and traveled to Melbourne from OS or interstate for the event. To people in Melbourne who missed out or couldn't attend, your attendance makes at difference and it is an investment in your both own career, in terms of knowledge, networking and demonstrating to Adobe that you exist!! z On Nov 22, 2007 6:38 PM, Andrew Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: :-) I am not a big fan of the CF8 Ajax features, sure for small applications they bring some nice functionality. However the binding options is extremely good:-) On 11/22/07, Dale Fraser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I can't understate the value of these events. Thanks to all that were involved in organizing CF Camp - it was great! Being the best city in the world, I am sure our CF Camp in Sydney was the best as well :-) I really enjoyed all the presentations. They were all well structured / presented with many examples which is the best way method of understanding new concepts. George, the best bit is the breath and depth of Adobe technology. as the guys at the camp said (esp at the start with Adam) is how ColdFusion is part of a whole lot of Adobe stuff... [cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup
Guys, don't forget that the Refresh event was a different flavour... CFCAMP was a community-based, grass roots event. In the case of Melbourne, it was the hard work of Steve Onnis and Mark Mandel (with help from others I hear as well - Dale, etc) _in_partnership_ with national community leaders (Geoff Bowers, Robin Hilliard) AND Adobe Australia (Mark Blair, Andrew Spaulding). Heck, even Peter Bell put his hand up at his own expence - and he's suppose to be on holidays to our country. that's very different to Refresh, which was an Adobe roadshow - or indeed WebDU which is Geoff Bowers and others giving back to the community (where Adobe are just a sponsor) in the case of CFCAMP, all the user groups and their managers were involved in getting the event to happen in each city. Adobe Australia worked hard in securing the international speakers as well as organising the event venues. don't discount the efforts of the local community people in getting this event happening. *Your* local community people. *Your* CFUG. eh, my 2c. barry.b On Nov 23, 2007 10:49 AM, KC Kuok [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Matthew, I was refering to the Max Refresh on October 31 which was free as well, though it was one big wrapup of Max by the local Adobe staff. It was held after the Masterclass Photoshop session. It was held at one of the event rooms at telstra dome. Cheers, Chong On Nov 23, 11:45 am, Matthew [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi KC Kuok, I have disagree that the 2 conference should become one. I know for me personally that the cost of attending MAX and being to busy was why I didn't go. The fact that CFCAMP was free and just around the corner meant that I could pop in and out for the session I wanted. If I had to pay for it I wouldn't have been able to justify only attending half of the day. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents worth. I hope that CFCAMP will run every year! BTW: perhaps Adobe could take a leaf out of MS book and market CF differently to grow the community (easy to say, hard to do). But this could be a double edged sword; because if there were more CF developers out there than we'd be worth less $$$... we just need to keep it balanced between a mature decent sized community VS every man and his dog claiming that he can program in CF and diluting the market. I'm off to have a look at TransferORM now. Cheers Matthew On Nov 23, 11:25 am, KC Kuok [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: All the speakers were much appreciated, but especially those from overseas... can't wait for the slides from the talks to be put up, I will probably most need the one where CF is a platform that can sit and speak to the other technologies (like .Net, MS Exchange, etc) and adobes own Flash/Flex, Acrobat generation stuff. To show my management that CF has more depth and advantages then what .Net will offer. (TBH i never thought of CF that way, as a platform rather than a web language, abit of marketing there but it is true) I think many businesses will move to an all windows platform because most of management are not involved in the day to day development processes, and because of the marketing dollars MS puts in this part of the world, comparatively people will start believing MS is the best option (and sometimes the only option). CF is too good to be our dirty little secret. Such events will help to grow the community in this part of the world, and also the visibility to the decision makers. Though I do reckon the events should be planned a little more in advanced and have a bigger profile. E.g. the MAX refresh(?) and CFCAMP this year were fairly good this year, but would have been better if both were held together across 2 days? I understand that it was abit of a rush this year, but it could be a mainstay annual event for the major cities. WebDU is good, but not everyone can make it every year, due to monetary and scheduling reasons, it may scavenger WebDU in the short run, but in the long run, a bigger CF community can't hurt. In the years to come, CF and Flex developers will be the one, Adobe RIA developer ? [cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup
Hi KC Kuok, I have disagree that the 2 conference should become one. [cfaussie] Transactions (was Re: [cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP is this week!)

Barry Beattie wrote: AOP will helps in some cases, but not all. I can labour the point with examples if you want. Maybe one or two? I can't say I know a lot about this area, but if I know what stumbling blocks you're facing, I can, if nothing else, watch the radar for solutions. (And forewarned is forearmed) besides, if nested transactions was a waste of time, why is it in Java .NET? I can't speak for .Net, but my experience with Java is that it offers a 1000 ways to skin a cat. Just because something is there does not necessarily mean you should use it. The standard API does have quite a few items, which for some reason or other, are broken at the worst, and violate principle of least surprise at best. Just look up the Java Puzzlers video on Google Tech Talks if you want specifics. I'm not saying your idea is a bad one, just that there's many ways of doing things. That said, my original point still stands though. ColdSpring looks like it has potential to solve your problem. And it's there for use now, rather than whenever CF9 comes out. [cfaussie] Re: CF8 on Solaris's?
On Nov 23, 2007 1:03 PM, Barry Beattie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: not supported may not mean it won't work Yeah I guess so. With my limited knowledge of Unix systems, I assume the Solaris installer wouldn't run on a Open Solaris 11 (running on a VM) with an Intel chip :( For now, I can't even get the installer uploaded to the server (it look all night and then failed) - using a large chunk of my monthly download cap. I looked for a way to download the installer directly from Adobe to the Solaris server - it seems the Adobe site won't work with the Lynx browser. Unless someone knows the direct url to download it? Without having to log in to Adobe. but keep in mind, it's your funeral. I would happily trash the server trying to get CF8 working - it's just a play pen. [cfaussie] Re: CF8 on Solaris's?
not supported may not mean it won't work - it just means that you're on your own if something goes wrong. Might not be fully tested. running CF6.1 on a Mac wasn't supported. Yet it worked. but keep in mind, it's your funeral.
