Apple-C is Ctrl-C

Ctrl is yet another function-special key (more like the properties
key, RHS on a Win keyboard)

One thing I noticed when I got my Mac and then went on holidays with it for
a couple of months, picking up free Wi-Fi in Amsterdam or internet cafe's
all over Italy, storing and editing 6,000 photo's with iPhoto, playing
music, watching movies, was how unimportant the operating system actually
was, a point rammed home to me using Linux Desktop on public machines all
over Finland.

file system access, plug-n-play, drag'n'drop and the applications themselves
and it could be a new Amiga or Apricot or BeOS or anything really - as long
as it worked as I expected.

but then again, I didn't need to worry about hard-core use of the video card
for some Adobe apps or games ... like I do now, hence starting the thread.

eh my 2c.

mind you, I still reckon Windows Explorer and Search pisses all over Finder
and Spotlight. Even Konqueror is better. but that's just my workflow.

what the heck is wrong with CTRL + C..

I know you can remap the keyboard but not all software inherits
this...i now have a MacBook Pro and an iMac so its a bitter pill to
 swallow :)

But .. i still make use of it on the road and thats what matters I
 guess :)

heck, if it's good enough for Scott Barnes to pick up a Mac (and
open a Mac.com account) then it can't be all bad.

Perhaps the question should be how many reasons does it take to
  give up a

In my case, sadly, just one.

[cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup

2007-11-22 Thread Zac Spitzer

I really enjoyed CFCAMP today, it was my first CF thang since the MX 7
launch and it was really worth the effort.

Nice to put faces to names and see a decent crowd of people turn up.

I thought Peter Bell's talk was the highlight for me talking about
code generation and DSL's.

Andrew, I agree about the CF8 lag on AJAX libraries being a major
concern, but at least we can trust that
when they upgraded, existing code will still just work :)

Thanks to all the people who presented and traveled to Melbourne from
OS or interstate for the event.

To people in Melbourne who missed out or couldn't attend, your
attendance makes at difference and it is an
investment in your both own career, in terms of knowledge, networking
and demonstrating to Adobe that you exist!!

I am not a big fan of the CF8 Ajax features, sure for small
applications they bring some nice functionality. However the bigger
problem is that the technology is based on code that is now 2 years
old, and when the next version of CF is released I hope they patch
this technology (minor version of course).

However the binding options is extremely good:-)

[cfaussie] CF Camp - Sydney

2007-11-22 Thread Rony

Thanks to all that were involved in organizing CF Camp - it was great!

Being the best city in the world, I am sure our CF Camp in Sydney was
the best as well :-)

I really enjoyed all the presentations. They were all well
structured / presented with many examples which is the best way method
of understanding new concepts.

I think the event is a great asset to any CF developer and if you
didn't make it to CF Camp this year, I think it's a must next year (if
the event is on).

Cheers,
Rony

you got an idea for a feature request for CF9

cool. Wanna share?

(I suggested getting nested cftransactions going as well as video

George, the best bit is the breath and depth of Adobe technology.

as the guys at the camp said (esp at the start with Adam) is how
ColdFusion is part of a whole lot of Adobe stuff... Flex integration,
LiveCycle Data Services is only the start.

Don't just look at ColdFusion, look at the Adobe Technology stack,
of which ColdFusion is right in the middle of.

[cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP Melbourne Wrapup

2007-11-22 Thread Barry Beattie

Guys, don't forget that the Refresh event was a different flavour...

CFCAMP was a community-based, grass roots event.

In the case of Melbourne, it was the hard work of Steve Onnis and Mark
Mandel (with help from others I hear as well - Dale, etc)
_in_partnership_ with national community leaders (Geoff Bowers, Robin
Hilliard) AND Adobe Australia (Mark Blair, Andrew Spaulding).

Heck, even Peter Bell put his hand up at his own expence - and he's
suppose to be on holidays to our country.

that's very different to Refresh, which was an Adobe roadshow - or
indeed WebDU which is Geoff Bowers and others giving back to the
community (where Adobe are just a sponsor)

in the case of CFCAMP, all the user groups and their managers were
involved in getting the event to happen in each city. Adobe Australia
worked hard in securing the international speakers as well as
organising the event venues.

don't discount the efforts of the local community people in getting
this event happening. *Your* local community people. *Your* CFUG.

eh, my 2c.

1) nested transactions are built into decent databases like SQLServer
2) nested transactions and partial roll-backs are built into both
Java and the .NET platform, esp ADO.NET.
3) Why? this pretty much sums it up:

Without nested transactions, you have to put them at the top level, which
means every service method (unless you use AOP) has to care. That may or may
not be a good thing, but programmers forget things.
Conceptually I'd like my manager1.get() to be one transaction,
manager2.update() another, fileLogger.write() a third, with one 'update
record' transaction around the lot - belt and braces defensive programming.

On Nov 23, 2007 11:29 AM, Andrew Scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Why would you want nested cftransactions? The database doesn't support this

should be used to advise on any feature requests for CF9? Can anybody
  remember this?

Also, was there a URL mentioned to report bugs in CF8?

I have honestly tried to wade through the adobe pages but without any
  success.

[cfaussie] Transactions (was Re: [cfaussie] Re: CFCAMP is this week!)

2007-11-22 Thread Haikal Saadh

So, really, what you want are not really nested transactions in the
database sense, but more in the AOP sense;

Apparently ColdSpring supports AOP. Maybe you should have a play with that?

Barry Beattie wrote:

 http://groups.google.com/group/cfcdev/browse_thread/thread/ac9bc51cf21f982a?hl=en#dc859d7e04025d7a

Maybe one or two? I can't say I know a lot about this area, but if I
know what stumbling blocks you're facing, I can, if nothing else, watch
the radar for solutions. (And forewarned is forearmed)
besides, if nested transactions was a waste of time, why is it in Java .NET?

I can't speak for .Net, but my experience with Java is that it offers a
1000 ways to skin a cat. Just because something is there does not
necessarily mean you should use it. The standard API does have quite a
few items, which for some reason or other, are broken at the worst, and
violate principle of least surprise at best. Just look up the Java
Puzzlers video on Google Tech Talks if you want specifics.

I'm not saying your idea is a bad one, just that there's many ways of
doing things.

That said, my original point still stands though. ColdSpring looks like
it has potential to solve your problem. And it's there for use now,
rather than whenever CF9 comes out.

Yeah I guess so.

With my limited knowledge of Unix systems, I assume the Solaris installer
wouldn't run on a Open Solaris 11 (running on a VM) with an Intel chip :(

For now, I can't even get the installer uploaded to the server (it look all
night and then failed) - using a large chunk of my monthly download cap.

I looked for a way to download the installer directly from Adobe to the
Solaris server - it seems the Adobe site won't work with the Lynx browser.

Unless someone knows the direct url to download it? Without having to log in
to Adobe.

but keep in mind, it's your funeral.

I would happily trash the server trying to get CF8 working - it's just a
play pen.

Cheers.
