Re: [change] Shift Lab wins Global Health Innovator Award

2017-10-27 Thread Beth Kolko
Thanks for helping spread the word, Richard! We're really excited about
this award for a few reasons.
One of the big ones is that it represents a new kind of recognition by
mainstream medtech. As some of you might know, Shift Labs' product
innovation is about innovation in design, specifically, human centered
design, rather than developing new core technology. From the customer side,
we've seen the emphasis on HCD pay off. But there is definitely skepticism
in the industry about letting design drive medtech. In that industry,
design is most often an afterthought. So it was awesome to get this award.

The other really exciting part, for those of you who are interested in low
resource communities at home and abroad, is that the guy on the right in
the giant-check pic, Tim Ring, is leading a charge in the industry to get
people to take emerging markets seriously and design new kinds of products.
He's the CEO of Bard, so he's got a great bully pulpit from which to make
the case. It's exciting to see the medtech and global health communities
coming together, and it's exciting to see an emphasis on design getting
some attention.

Thanks to the Change group for all the inspiration and support over the
years. I never would have stepped onto the startup pathway without all the
great conversations in this group.

Best, Beth

[change] Startup Weekend: Maker edition

2013-06-21 Thread Beth Kolko
Hi Change!

Startup Weekend is having their first ever hardware version June 28-30. It
should be a great event, and a chance to be part of something that's the first
step in a global launch. If you're interested, see below for more details.
*And* there's a student discount code. (STUDENT is the secret code, tho they
will make you show a valid student id at the door).

best,
beth
___

Startup Weekend , a non-profit based in Seattle, WA, is a global network of
passionate leaders and entrepreneurs on a mission to inspire, educate, and
empower individuals, teams and communities. Come share ideas, form teams, and
launch startups.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to
pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams
organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then
it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market
validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local
entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Startup weekend is all about innovation- and Startup weekend Maker’s Edition
aims to bring innovation to a whole new level. Typically, teams create software
applications. However, with the tools and expertise provided byMakerhaus , for
the first time in Seattle teams will be able to design, and prototype actual
physical products. Micro-controllers, Laser cutting, 3D printing, metal
working, woodworking, the possibilities are endless.

In addition to the three usual ticket types of developer, designer, and
non-technical, we will be selling a fourth type of ticket- unicorns. Unicorns
are people who agree to be trained on the equipment available at Makerhaus. We
want to make sure there are enough people familiar with the equipment to be a
part of each team.

Because this weekend is a little different than the typical start-up weekend,
there will be an optional pre-event on June 12th. Participants will be able to
meet with coaches, check out the materials and tools available at Makerhaus,
and get a feel for the possibilities of physical prototyping.

Whether you are an experienced entrepreneur, or product developer, a craftsman,
a microprocessor enthusiast, a developer or designer who wants to try their
hand at hardware, everyone will be enriched by the experience of turning an
idea into a physical reality.

Registration is live! http://seattlemaker.eventbrite.com/

[change] research group for Winter 2013

2012-11-02 Thread Beth Kolko
I wanted to share this announcement with the Change community. Directed
Research groups in HCDE are variable credit, research-based activities.
Students enroll for either HCDE 496 (undergraduate students) or HCDE 596
(graduate students). You'll need to get an add code from me, so if you're
interested, please send email as directed below.
Thanks.
Best,
Beth

Understanding Health in Diverse Communities: The Role of Cooking, Food Choices,
and Traditional Recipes

South King County is one of the most diverse regions in the country, but its
residents have some of the lowest health outcomes in the county, including high
rates of diabetes. Effective interventions for promoting diabetes management or
prevention must be culturally appropriate and grounded in understanding what
specific challenges these communities face.

This quarter, we will do some readings, identify communities, and go out to the
field to investigate attitudes and health behaviors specifically surrounding
food. We’ll go to the places where people shop and learn how people cook or
provide food for their families. We’ll also explore cross-generational and
cross-cultural issues related to food.

This work is tied to a larger project in HCDE and CSE that is working to create
community-generated videos about healthy behaviors and diabetes management. The
work of this research group will be able to inform that larger project.

Students interested in learning more about ethnographic methods and qualitative
research are encouraged to join. If you are interested, please send an e-mail
to Robert Racadio (raca...@uw.edu) and Beth Kolko (bko...@uw.edu) with a brief
statement describing your interest in the research group and any experience you
have in conducting field research.

Re: [change] Job: iHub Research Looking for Intern

2012-05-25 Thread Beth Kolko
And if you are interested in getting involved with iHub/iHub Research folks but
aren't in a position to move to Nairobi, Angela Crandall, iHub Research Project
Manager, and I are going to run a joint research group with Kenyan and UW
students in the fall.

We're working on the details, but the general goal is gaining collaborative
research experience to inform some product or service design (most likely
mobile), and we're thinking of potentially working with Somali communities in
Nairobi and Seattle. We'll use skype liberally for the project, and students
will work in teams across the two sites. If you're interested in participating,
let me know. o Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to
participate.

Best,
Beth

one idea that came up that made me think of this.

It's a competition on Designing for the Developed World, open only to
