Re: [Chat] Ruby Tuesdays is closed

2012-06-06 Thread gasp107

Friends & Neighbors of Charles Village

Is it francise restaurants that are floundering in Charles Village, or is it
the economy? As you know Calles on Saint Paul closed a couple of weeks ago.
Calles had excellent food, a little too pricey--and some can say that it was in
an area that is in transition.
In the case of Calles, it was in an area that does not draw any tourist trade
and does not draw support from JHU. (other restaurants are struggling as well)
!!!

Business is a very challenging in todays economy. You could have a great
product, great service and affordable prices--but still struggle. City, State
and Federal taxes & regulations only put the icing on the cake and cause you to
fail -- or like myself, your bank could deal you a bad hand (or raw deal) and
put your business and life into a tail spin.

On the news, all you hear is how government is going to improve the economy and
create more jobs. The truth of the matter is that government & bank regulations
continue to kill the economy. Businesses and the average citizen are hesitant
in spending -- and in most cases we don't have anything left to spend.

Please continue to support the LOCAL economy -- avoid purchasing from the
internet if your needs are locally available.

Thank You:
Richard Burnham

I never liked it but then again I don't care for chain restaurants. With the
recent openings of Quizno's and Ledo's I'm afraid it will not be a cool, local
restaurant. Would love to have a B Bistro type place.

Sounds like the drain on the condensing unit is clogged with alge. A handyman

With this surge in heat--all AC mechanics are swamped!

The only ones in Baltimore that I know of that is familiar with bocce ball is
LaScala Resturant, who has an indoor court in their restaurant on Eastern Ave.
The marketing manager is a friend of mine -- in case you need any information.

You are right about the name, Emil. I agree that it is
a Baltimore institution, but it isn't a deli at all. The lunch
counter at The New Wyman Park Restaurant will you remind
of the soda fountains that many of the Read's drug stores
and five-and-dimes around town had. And it was not unusual
to see some of Baltimore's old school politicians, both saints

Here is a copy of an email I just sent to JHU. This is a real problem in our
neighborhood:

I am a resident of Charles Village and every day I commute around lunch time
south on St. Paul. On dozens of occasions, I have had JHU students walk right
in front of my car, even though I have a green light and they have a 'Don't
Walk' sign. The most egregious locations are at 33rd by the Barnes and Noble
and 31st Street by Donna's. I purposely drive below the speed limit in these
areas as I have had a few close calls. Today was the worst, as thank goodness
my car has great brakes, preventing me from hitting three Hopkins students who
walked right in front of my car while laughing the entire time as their friends
laughed and shouted at them to run across the street. JHU students need to be
reminded that Charles Village is not their 'campus,' nor are they in a small
New England town ... they are in a large metropolitan city and their campus is
in the heart of it.

I have lived in Charles Village for 8 years and have had mostly positive
experiences with JHU students but this is a real problem. Their safety is being
put at risk, and I am in jeopardy of being involved in a horrific accident just
because they cannot seem to follow a simple "Walk/Don't Walk" sign, despite
their near perfect SAT scores.

Thank you,
Greg Alexander

Charles Village was named one of America's most beautiful neighborhoods by
Travel + Leisure. Right up there with Pacific Heights in SF, Brooklyn Heights
in NY, and lots of other great spots. I take these rankings with a grain of
salt, but it is certainly a nice nod to our neighborhood's beauty and
community. Way to go CV!

2011-10-08 Thread gasp107

Dear Charles Village Friends:
I only wish that I could put the right words together, but basicly the
neighborhood needs to support LOCAL INDEPENDENT BUSINESES. Eddies, Donna's,
Graphic Imaging, and others that I cannot think of at the moment. BUYING LOCAL
puts dollars back into the local economy. Chains & Francises send their dollars
to their headquarters based in other states.

I want to thank everyone in the community that has their printing & graphic
design done at Graphic Imaging, Inc. We appreciate your support in this
stressful (down) economy.

Thank You:

Quiznos isn't an Italian place, it's fast-food subs. It's in the same market
egment as Subway -- which has a shop a block away, so it is kind of curious
hat they'd set up here.
I don't have a good sense of how big the space is, but it's small enough that I
oubt a real bistro-sized restaurant could fit in there. I also wonder whether
here'd be a problem getting a liquor license in a block that already has at
east two that I can think of off the top of my head (CVP and Donna's -- and
oes Ledo's have one too?). Might be hard to convince an upscale place to open
f they can't sell booze.

cannot imagine why they would allow Quiznos there.

When Ledo first opened, there was talk of an Indian restaurant but no name for

Maybe the Ledo franchisee got tired of paying for unused space, and Quiznos,
eing available to fill the space, made more business sense in so far as it
ould pay some rent. That is all that I can imagine. But why would Quiznos
ant to open next to Ledo?

When I think of the places that have failed in that double space (Homewood
eli including Silber's Bakery, P J Henry, and the burger joint whose original
re later names escape me at the moment), I wonder if we are going to see
nother business failure there. Note that P J Henry failed after its owners
xpanded to Towson Commons (where everything has failed) and to Bel Air, thus
resumably causing the entire enterprise to fail.

 Time will tell.

Important things to consider when selecting a contractor. 1) Are they insured?
2) Are they licensed to do business in Maryland?
3) Do they have any unsatisfactory claims against them with the Better Business

FYI: I have not heard of any of the contractors that you listed, but that

Some companies that I have heard of and have heard that they do good work:

I just came across this brief article in The Sun.

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/crime/blog/2011/08/police_investigating_stabbing.html

Police investigating stabbing by home intruder in Charles Village

Police confirmed that they are investigating a stabbing by an intruder who
broke into a home in Charles Village Tuesday night.

According to a report, the 25-year-old victim and his girlfriend were awakened
by his barking dog at 11 p.m. and the victim went downstairs, where he found an
intruder in the living room of his home, in the 3100 block of Guilford Rd. [sic]

The intruder punched the victim in the face, then brandished a knife and
"continuously stabbed the victim in the face and his side until the struggle
ended, allowing the suspect to flee the residence." As of last report, the
victim was at Johns Hopkins Hospital in stable condition.

Police describe the suspect as a black male with a medium complexion,
6'0"-6'3", short hair and a slim build. He is believed to have entered through a
rear kitchen window, which had been left open for ventilation.

Northern District detectives are investigating.

Emil, thank you for the warning.
Any updates on the outcome of this would be welcomed. Was the person who was
attacked able to identify the person. Can we possibly get more information
about a description of who did the attacking so that we can be on the look out
for this person if we see them milling around waiting for another house to
break in to?

Where in the city is "evacuated"? Didn't most people just go outside, realize
hat nothing much was going on, then go back inside? Dirt bikers have been
isrupting traffic in Baltimore for years, earthquake or no.

From what I am reading, the largest earthquake centered when this one was
entered was a 4.8 in 1875. This one was a 5.9, i.e. about 12 times as large
the Richter scale is logarithmic based on common i.e. base 10 logarithms, for
nyone who wants to know how I made the calculation). So I take seriously the
dvice that a bigger shock may occur later, although probably that will not

Re: [Chat] trash cans

2011-04-01 Thread gasp107

Thank you Matthew!

Although $600.00 is expensive--if CV bought $50.00 cans, they would be stiolen
or blown away every week -- realizing that they are on the streets 24 / 7. At
$50.00 each per week, it would be $2600 for one location per year -- or if one
disappeared per month, it would be $600.00 per year. You do the math -- and
thank you for buying USA. I don't know about everyone else, but I do not want
to see beat up trash cans blowing around Charles Village. I am not an eliteist,
but I do appreciate a vibrant-clean neighborhood.

Do you remember the free cans that the City gave away 3 years ago--as we can
see, they have all disappeared.

As I see the examples on the web page, there are opportunities for signage on
the cans to either promote the neighborhood or to sell advertising to local
companies.

Thank You:

Judy, if you're going to lecture everyone that they should buy American, you
can't then start complaining that it's too expensive to do so unless you can
demonstrate that it's possible to find equally high quality trash cans for
less. I'm sure it's possible to find ones made in Asia for a fraction of the
price (www.nytimes.com/2007/11/26/nyregion/26manhole.html tells the story of
how New York City began buying manhole covers made in India because they were
so much cheaper), but you would be against that, right? I'm sure it's also
possible to find lower quality ones that won't last as long, but then you're
pushing the CVCBD to be penny-wise and pound-foolish because they'd probably
end up paying more in the long run. Can you show that similar institutions are
able to purchase American-made, high-quality trash cans for less? If not, then
I don't understand why you're complaining.

Mr Hill,

I understand that no tax money is being used. The CVCBD is not a municipality.
Since many municipalities are incompetent,I hope the CVCBD is not using them as
an example of what to do.
This is extravagance out of control.
I am sure Witt Industries is reputable. They have been in business a long
time,probably due to frivolous purchases.
I cannot conceive of any rationale that would justify this waste of money.

Sincerely,

What I am about to say may be against many opinions, but the SunPlus paper
sustains local jobs in the community.
It does not hurt the environment, because it is printed on re-cycled paper.
It helps the local economy by featuring businesses and organizations in
the Baltimore area--not businesses from other states or other countries like
the Internet does. Think of it as junk mail if you will, but it helps the
working class during these tough economic times.

Subject: [Chat] Porch roof and down spout repair
Hello fellow CV's,
I have a serious leak in the downspout which goes down through my front
porch. It has undermined the column and the roof section that is beneath it.
I have already invested thousands of dollars into repairs on this and it
has always leaked. Does anyone know someone they can recommend who can
rebuild my roof, correct the problems that I have with my downspout once and
for all? Please help!
Thank you for your suggestions,
D'
PS. Please do not recommend the Roof Doctor, James Willis, he has already
had a crack at it and its still leaking!

teaching a beginner driver including

a) big vacant parking lots (on weekends)
b) wide traffic lanes that aren't very populated--
c) country lanes that aren't heavily traversed

Upper Roland Ave-- as you cross the county line seems a good area w/ some
side neighborhoods w/ big wide streets and most folks parked off-street.
Any one have any ideas?

flowers yourself to avoid "middle man" mark-up's, which can be sizeable.

careful not to leave packages on our porches but I am concerned that someone

more thieves are following the Fed Ex or UPS truck looking for packages.
These

Today my mother called me because a Police officer went to our house to drop
off an open package that was addressed to her.

He asked if she knew what the contents of the box was and what should be in
the box, and if she was expecting a delivery.

She only told him that hse was expecting a box from her cousin, with candy
and come caribbien spices. He went tot he trunk of his vehicle (According to
her the vehicle was a police car but does not remember if was a city police
car or county or state) She says he was wearing a uniform. He asked her for
her name and birth date. (I find that rather odd)

He gave her the package and then left telling her that he would return at
1pm to get a report.

I may be paraniod but this sets off my "Spider senses" on many levels. 1)
why would a cop just drop off the package? 2) why did he only ask for her name
and age?

I plan on staying home tomorrow to see if this "cop" returns.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Theories?

I would appreciate any and all input

Thank you Wendy & Greg.

that was my Mom's package. I appreciate the neighborly diligence and
thoughfulness

I called the police to see if they sent someone to the house and they
verified it to be true and mentioned that there is an investigation but could
not
say more on the topic. They suggested I , or my spouse be here since my
mother has a language barrier regaridn English.

I wonder if this guy who Greg followed is the same person who took some
other packages.

Thank you again
:-)

I have informed my mother that from now on all packages should be sent to my

We have had several packages stolen off of our porch. So today, greg
sees a guy carrying a package, and he dropped it in our alley (we live
at 2711n calvert). the box was to 26?? Calvert St. (wanda). So greg
called the police and followed the guy to find him looking for packages
on the 2700 block of St Paul. He went house to house. The police came
and questioned him and let him go. Greg showed the officer the dumped
package and the officer took it.

The good news is that the officer is aware of who the person is, they
just need to catch him in the act.

Hope this is your package and relieves your worries.

2008-09-19 Thread GASP107
If in doubt & no matter how believable or how well known they  are;
1) You also need to see if they are licensed & insured.
2) ALWAYS check with the Better Business Bureau. Go to
_www.baltimore.bbb.org_ (http://www.baltimore.bbb.org)

The same thing applies when having printing done. There is an online
printing business (Vista Print) that does about a Billion $$ of business a
year, but
if you check them out with the BBB, they have a bad reputation.

Besides from a lot of their work being done in other country's, they are
also headquartered in another country, therefore they pay no taxes to the USA.

Re: [Chat] Two Sisters Grille; Signatures

2008-08-21 Thread GASP107
Hi Neighbors,

I want to differ. Most businesses that I talk with are down 30 to 60%.
Expenses are up drastically, and sales are down considerably. The economy
SUCKS!
Many small businesses are considering themselves lucky if they are breaking
even; but most are losing money, dipping into personal savings, maxing out
credit cards, insurance policies, etc.

Yesterday I spoke with my accountant, lawyer and banker. Everyone stated
that many of their business clients are experiencing hardship.

With my company Graphic Imaging, business this year has been tough. We are
hoping that September will bring opportunities, but there are no guarantees.

One thing that you can do to help, is to BUY LOCAL. Independent businesses
are experiencing tough times. For example, many people are making off shore
companies Multi-Multi-Millionaires by using the Internet. For example: Vista
Print had sales of $408,000,000 as of July 08'. Most people are not aware of
how companies like this are affecting the local economy here in the USA. Most
of the orders that they receive are under $100.00, but larger orders are
leaving the country as well. Do your self a favor and check out the BBB
(Better
Business Bureau) to see how ethical (or un-ethical) a company is that you are
making a purchase from.

For more information about BUY LOCAL, please go to
_www.buylocalbaltimore.com_ (http://www.buylocalbaltimore.com) . There is a
preferred list of local
companies on this local site for you to work with, that would appreciate your
support.

Thank You:

Hi All:

Dizzy Issie's will reopen the first part of September. The new name will be
The Dizz. Elaine states that the prices & menu will be the same but they will
be adding some healthy veg, items to the menu. The entire building has been
re-done with a new kitchen, AC, upstairs & downstairs newly redecorated, same
olde classic bar, new windows, etc. When you go there it will have the same
great atmosphere. When you go, be sure to check out the menus. Graphic

Hi--

I have also looked at the SW site. There is an interior version--but it is
definitely for exterior as well. When you Google, type in: Sherwin Williams
Exterior Duration

I used it last year on my front railings & door at my home in Reisterstown.
I have never had a product apply as well. It looks as good today as the day I
applied it. I plan on using it here at my business also.

2008-04-19 Thread GASP107
Hi Christine,

I have recently experienced using a Sherwin Williams product called
Duration. It goes on absolutely fantastic and covers absolutely GREAT! It is
moderately expensive, but it is worth it. It is guaranteed not peel, fade,
etc. It is
self priming, but it is recommended to prime any bare wood. The normal
requirements of removing any loose paint still applies. It is noted that this
is
new technology and it is actually not a paint. I am VERY happy with the
product.

There is a Sherwin Williams store at Falls Road & Cold Spring across from
POLY. It is located behind the shopping area. (I suppose that is the North
East
corner. I do not know their hours--(call first).

They can mix any color that you want. Good luck on painting your award
winning Painted Lady.

Best Wishes:

No, just be sure that they are not electrical.

I have a 14' & 24' extension ladder--but what I think you are looking for is
the free standing type that you do not have to prop up against something.
Call Liesje Gantert at the VLP on Monday. The ladder that they have is 14 foot.

The other alternative that I have is a tree trimmer that is on an extension
pole. It extends to about 15 feet. I have it at my home in Reisterstown, so
let me know if you want me to bring it in to work.

I actually just received a parking ticket from 2004 that was
originally $27.00.  The current bill is now $500.00 which I paid two
days ago.  I called to find out what I could do and to prove my
consistency with paying parking ticket through out the years.  I was
told that there was nothing they could do unless I wanted to request a
trial and in the mean time the ticket would go up $16.00 a day and if
the police find your car they will boot it and tow it! The trial does
not mean you will get the $500.00 waved.  They informed me that people
will take tickets off of your car and put them on their own so they
don't get a ticket.  Then they will throw them away. Okay I thought,
Well they must have more important things to do like finding people
that are committing violent crimes, but that doesn't seem to be the
case!!!  Regardless, I wanted to let people know that they should check
on their cars for current tickets that you may not have received.

It's distressing that the police do not believe such an incident to be
high in their priority list. When someone is stabbed and their
intestine is punctured, that is a life-threatening assault. Our police
should be trying to identify the criminals who are preying on our
neighborhood, and the detectives' reluctance to interview the people
involved seems to show that they are not giving us needed attention.

Recent CV robberies have been at gunpoint and knifepoint. According to
the police spokesman, Sterling Clifford, "In the case of the
nonlife-threatening injury, it is not unusual for the detective not to
respond to the scene." Detectives did not interview Benjamin Treat
until 35 hours after the stabbing, and then only after he and his mother
called several times. I guess the police are telling us they will wait
til someone is killed before making extra efforts to apprehend the CV
criminals. That will be too late.

Hi Christine:

Earlier this year I contacted Fick Roofing who is on 25th Street. The reason
that I contacted them was the fact that they won the Better Business Bureau
Torch Award for Ethical business practices and they are local. I thought
"This is great--finally I can do business with someone that I can trust. One
problem was that they quoted me a price of $75,000.00 which is way above my
league.

Fick also quoted a new roof for my home in Reisterstown, which they quoted
$45,000.00. I had it done for $7,500.00. The company that did my home did a
great job but does not do flat roofs, sorry to say.

FYI: The rubber roof is the way to go. The white is a coating that is
applied after the roof is replaced.
Who ever you come up with, go on line to _www.baltimore.bbb.org_
(http://www.baltimore.bbb.org) (Better Business Bureau) to see if the roofer
has any
complaints filed against them.

Re: [Chat] It's worth a try

2007-05-09 Thread GASP107
Dear Judy,

Un-like home/office printers, cartridges for all of my equipment has to be
bought from the manufacturer (actually it is part of my service agreements), in
my case: Xerox & Konica Minolta. Generic brands are not available for
Digital Presses, but even if there were it would void any service policies and
warrantees as well as the quality would not be acceptable.

Offset presses use conventional ink, ink is somewhat universal in that there
are about a half dozen manufacturers (previously 12 or more) in the
Mid-Atlantic area. Even that, there are several different formulations for the
type
of press and type of stock that is being used.

Sorry to bore you with printing info, but it may be interesting to note that
digital printing at Graphic Imaging, Inc. does not use ink, therefore we are
not dependant on the oil companies other than getting to work and delivering
our work to customers in our autos as well as for energy to heat & cool our
building.

FYI: I only use BP whenever available (SEE YOU THERE)
--although the Exxon dealer at Howard & 25th does offer good mechanical
services.

Have a great day---

In my opinion, to boycott a company, you would only be hurting the local
small business owner. It would have no impact on the big corporation. But if it

makes you feel better, go for it.

It would be like me NOT wanting to use my Xerox Digital Presses one day and
only running my work on one of our Konica Minolta Digital Presses on that
day. "Xerox could care less".

Hi All:

Saturday afternoon around 3-o'clock on 25th Street is a real spectacle of
speeding dirt bikes. It is amazing that there has not been a serious accident.

One night around 8:00PM was a real surprise when I was leaving the shop from
my front door, a dirt bike came speeding up the sidewalk in front of my
building and made a left turn down the sidewalk on Saint Paul. I am sure he was

at the Inner Harbor before the Police got here. Now I know why the sidewalks
are handicapped accessible at intersections. "They help the dirt bikes have a
smoother ride."

Re: [Chat] Charles Village Crime Alerts

2007-04-03 Thread gasp107
Hello Everyone:

I know that I am not the expert on reducing crime--otherwise I would
not have personally experienced problems myself.

(For example: over the past couple of years--my front windows being
shot out, personally threatened by knife point, my tires slashed, car
windows smashed, my building graffittied several times, flower pots
stolen, nearly $5,000 worth of personal property including cameras,
tools, ladder etc. stolen; and just last weekend I was victim of four
12 -14 year old punks throwing rocks at my car, my building and myself.
During the rock throwing insident, I called 911 and the lady asked for
my name, address and phone number 3 times--which by that time, I said
forget it--the punks were to North Avenue and the Police would be
waisting their time to come.

With all of the crime in the area, I received notice from the Police
department that if my alarm system sounded one more time, I will be
faced with a $50.00 fine and up to $1400.00 after 14 times. If the area
was safe, I would not need an alarm system--but the City uses crime to
create a revenue source. A few false alartms are inevitable-- therefore
I am punished for trying to protect my property.

I suppose that my secret to survival (and that is pretty much what we
do) is to look out for my neighbors and they look out for us.

In regards to my good friend Sharon stating that the CVCBD is budget is
putting more money into clean up rather than crime, my comment is that
the clean team and safety team are working in all areas of Charles
Village on a daily basis, therefore there are more eyes and ears on the
streets than ever before. Is that enough?--"NO". Although the surtax
will not be increased with this budget, in my PERSONAL OPINION the
surtax would have to be increased in the future to have the security
needed to help control the crime, particularly in Hargrove, Old Goucher
and the West side. Should there be more POLICE presence---ABSOLUTELY
YES! Many of my neighbors complain that the CVCBD is not doing enough.
I pay about $230.00 to the CVCBD Surtax, compaired to the $5,000.00
"PLUS" that I pay to the City for taxes.
"Shouldn't we be getting more police support from the City"?

Please note that the CVCBD Board meeting next Tuesday is a very
important one iin many ways. Not only will the budget be voted up or
down, but we will have an opportunity to hear from The Central
Baltimore Partnership. If they are successful, there will be
significant improvement to the area from Penn Station to 25th St.
---which will have tremendous positive effects well beyond that area.

Stay Safe:

crime for many years now.  If you are concerned about safety and crime
matters, such as the ones contained in the forwarded emails below (SEE
BELOW),  it is important that you communicate these concerns to
Northern District through the Charles Village Community Benefits
District which has a safety program exactly for that purpose.  We need
to increase patrols both by the CVCBD team and by Northern District.
We need coordination between the CVCBD and the Northern District. We
need the CVCBD Safety team to assist in educating us on the best crime
prevention techniques and safety precautions.  At the CVCBD Budget
hearing on March 13 David Hill, Executive Director, confirmed that
these things would continue to be done.  We also need to do our part by
becoming block leaders for the CVCBD and block watchers for the
Northern District. The proposed budget and the presentation on the
Financial Plan for Fiscal Year 2008 are both available online at the
website www.charlesvillage.org .  Please note that, although residents
surveyed consistently have stated that they want safety and sanitation
to receive equal treatment in the budget, the proposed budget spends
less on Safety than Sanitation.

I urge all of you who are concerned about safety issues to check out
the budget and financial plan on the website and communicate with David
Hill or your quad representative or your community association
representatives about your concerns.   We shouldn't wait for crimes to
happen to take proper precautions and to make proper plans for improve
safety.  If we could increase our attendance at important meetings that
would have the best impact.

Photo Service in Hampden I think does this, also . . . the post office
does
but it may be more hassle than it's worth, also, Kinkos. Or, even your
own
snap shot that fits the dimensions will work, the government scans the
photo
and doesn't use the original.

Are there any local businesses in CV where I can go to
have a passport taken?

Thanks Emil for promoting our local businesses. The 2 Sisters must have
worked all night. When I went there for lunch at 4:00PM yesterday, it looked

it would be 3 more weeks before their opening.

I want to wish everyone in the neighborhood a Merry Christmas, and a

Trivia Question: What was the name of the restaurant that occupied the 2
Sisters building in the 80's.
I recall that it was very popular with business people for lunch, and the
food was very good--but I cannot remember the name.

Just think how neat it would be to drive it in the Charles Village Parade.

Hi Brad:

RE: Krug on Saratoga Street

I had the sign bracket that the CVCBD sign hangs from (that I designed),
made at Krug.
Their history goes back to not only doing a lot of work in Baltimore, but
much of the ornamental ironwork in New Orleans. I believe that they did the Iron
work on my property of Graphic Imaging, Inc., 107 East 25th Street.

Congratulations Crystal. It is great to hear how you and your family are
