Re: [Chevelle-list] Re Quarter Panel installation Cost
Amen Mike. Just cause you can get it done cheaper doesn't mean better. For the '69 SS I am currently doing a frame off restoration on ... I had both quarters replaced (FULL), full floor pan, trunk pan, both front fenders (NOS), trunk lid, front valance panel, outer fender wells, trunk drop offs, and all of the other rust spots cut out, new metal welded in, Hood fixed and the rest of the body smoothed. The car is now 100% rust free. Cost including parts was about $6500. This was with me and my friend Tom taking the car apart, sanding down the areas that were not going to be replaced down to metal and completely stripping/gutting the insides of the car, helping out with the body work (grinding, sanding, cutting, etc...) every weekend for 6 weeks. I had figured about $4500 going into it...Once we started removing sheet metal, we found other areas that needed fixing... that were NOT visible from the start. Luckily my body man is one of the best in the business and he was able to make most of what we needed on the spot. While the quarters were off, we POR-15'd all exposed metal. Needed.. maybe not... but good insurance!! He also suggested we fix other things while we were doing it... kind of pay me now ... or hate yourself later for not doing it. He is a good friend, so ripping me off was not even in the equation. So after $2000 more than I had budgeted (and another 2 weeks of labor), it was ready to take home. The car still needs to be final block sanded a few times to get it 100% ready for paint... which will probably cost about another $1000 or so. Then add about another $3500 for paint. Cheap NO but this is what it takes and costs to do it right. Good Luck!! Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] LT1 oil pressure
You didn't say weather that was a hot or cold reading ... I'll assume it was at idle. If the engine was cold... very low... should read in the 60-70 range ... especially at start up. hot ... probably ok at idle ... 20-30 seems to be about the norm. If you think it's a real issue, you can check the pressure of each cylinder. Before that I would probably hook up a manual gauge and see if you get the same reading(s). Good Luck Donnie In a message dated 2/1/2007 10:02:26 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I need to know what a normal oil pressure reading is for a 95 or 96 LT1 350 with aluminum heads. [Chevelle-list] Trouble with the starter on the 69 Chevelle
A member of mine is having problems with his starter?? You guys have any suggestions?? Here's his story Morning guys (or gals, depending on who opens this email), I’m having trouble with the starter on the Chevelle. Last night I went tostart the car it wouldn’t start. Turn the key and nothing. No click, no nothing. Everything else works, headlights, radio, interior light, etc. I was able to jump start the car by coasting and letting the clutch out. It took me about twenty-five minutes to get home. I turned the car off once in the garage, then tried starting the car again. The car started without hesitation. This is typical when ever I experience this problem. This might happen twice in a week or it may happen once every couple months. The only consistency is it never seems to happen in cool weather. I’m considering the following items next, - by passing the neutral safety switch. - installing a new ignition switch. A little history, This started around three years ago. At that time I had a rebuilt GM high torque starter. I installed a reduction starter from Jeg’s about six weeks ago giving into the heat soak theory with the stock starter and headers. I considered changing the battery cable along with the starter but it looked in perfect shape, no damage or corrosion. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance! Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] Heavy Chevy
I sent this to a "heavy chevy" expert of mine here's his reply... The Heavy Chevy was a marketing ploy on Chevrolet's behalf. The Federal Government dropped the hammer on horsepower and emissions after 70. In an effort to sell cars Chevrolet came up the marketing plan to sell cars based on image and perception. The Heavy Chevy was a niche model positioned between the Malibu and the SS. In todays verbage we'd call it a hybrid or orphan. The premise was simple; Based model Chevelle series with stripes, blacked out grill treatment, hood pins and the new 14" rally wheels. The interiors were very taxi cab plain. Vinyl floor mat instead of carpet, vinyl covered bench seat only and el cheapo door panels. Base engine was a 307 with a three-on-the-tree. Two 350's and the big block 402 were available. 454 was only reserved for the SS. The car had the promise to be a no frills race car if properly ordered. Most came with only a couple of options. Power brakes and steering were optional. A strike in early '71 delayed the introduction of the Heavy Chevy model. They debuted in early March of 71. Total production was 6727. They continued into the end of the '72 model year with 9503 being made in '72. The Heavy model was only availble on a 2dr hardtop. No converitbles, sedans or El-camino's were given this treatment. They were availble in every color offered for the rest of the Chevelle line-up. Stripe colors were black and white and could be installed on any color. With the exception of white on white and black on black. It seems like most of the ones I see are also Orange. Coinsidently I own two Heavys and both are Orange.. Hope this helps.. If you have any more questions let me know. Thanks, Chuck Hope this helps!! Donnie

[Chevelle-list] Soda Blasting???
I have a '69 SS that I'm getting ready to have the body stripped to bare metal. Have a couple of options, with Soda Blasting being one. Has anyone had their car Soda Blasted?? How was the cleanup?? I also understand the baking soda leaves a "rust inhibitor" residue that has to be "washed" off with a water/vinegar solution. Any problems there??? Any tips? Thanks in advance. Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] what paint for rear end?
One thing to note... if you go the powder coat way you have to give them a bare housing... the bushings and insides will never take the heat. If it's already together... paint is the only way. I have to do the same to my rear... i plan to primer it and then paint it a gloss black can get the paint from a local store... or eastwood. I like the idea about using the cherry picker I was going to paint it on stands... always end up scratching off some new paint... Good luck!! Donnie
BJ response... was Re: [Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows
Hey Phil, You hit the nail on the head for the BJ auctions these guys just have more $$$ than brains. I watched a guy pay over $110K for a '56 chevy... nothing fancy... yes it was a frame off, numbers matching car... again... nothing special. MOST it should have went for is about $50K ... and that would have been a stretch 2 years ago. Heck ... out of the 55-57 era, the '56 was the least popular. This same guy then paid $45K for a crate 502 and another HP engine (cant remember what it was)... guess he never heard of Summit could have bought them both for around $20K or so. IMO, BJ is quickely making a mockery of our hobby. What would have been considered "JUNK", people now believe is worth $15K. Parts for our cars are going through the roof. I've seen quite a few "frame-off" restorations where the guys don't even look for original stuff anymore... repro all the way. More bondo than metal. Yeah, it looks great to the untrained eye... but buyer beware. A few years down the road they will be in for a BIG suprise. WHY? Just to make a quick buck. Have you noticed all of the "sweet" women they now have in the crowd assisting with the auctioning? Why? Easy answer here... when it comes to some "eye candy", men don't tend to think with their brains. I watched one of them "egg" this buyer on to bid a car way higher than it should have gone for ... he just couldn't tell her no... go figure. Maybe he was trying to impress her? Thought he would be taking her home? Heck, i don't know. What I do know is she is laughing all the way to the bank with her commission!! Oh well... opportunity is the american way... BJ is just taking advantage of it I guess you could say?For those of us who already have our cars... well my $15K Chevelle is now worth over $25 to $30K ... should I say thanks?? For those trying to join our hobby... just gonna have to get out the checkbook... pay the bill and don't look back it's only money, right? I'll get off the box now... Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows
Well said JJ I want to thank you guys for the response this has been a long standing issue and it appears that it will continue to be for quite some time. Hope was that there would be some sort of solution out there... not yet. Until there is one... guess it will have to be business as usual. Thanks again. Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows
Hey Phil, I"m in the same boat as the rest of you, so i do understand. So far the only rationale answer I have received is to just "ignore" the issue and carry on... that's what most of the event coordinators are doing at this time. So far from what I've seen is thatthere is no "easy" resolution to this... is there any resolution... maybe... but for now, i'm not sure what that is. I"ll keep digging! TTYL Donnie
[Chevelle-list] Trailered vs. Non-Trailered Cars at shows
Hey Guys, I’m looking for some input from folks who trailer their cars and also those who drive their cars to shows/events for competition. Here’s the question(s)…. Should event sponsors separate the trailered vs. the non-trailered cars on the show field? How would that make you trailered guys feel? Isolated? Would you just not attend that show? How about you “drivers”? In the long run, would this cause more problems or solve them? How are other event sponsors handling this? This is an issue of which those who run a show faces over and over. We do 3-4 shows a year (some points driven, some not) and inevitably, after each one I get quite a few inputs (well actually complaints) that this should be. As far as I know, the late great chevy is the only show around that does separate the two. It’s pretty well known that if you drive your car, in just about every case, you cannot compete against a car this is trailered. The trailered car will take home the trophy (or at least first place) in just about every case. A driven car will show signs of wear, no matter how careful one is. Rock chips, dirt, grime, discolored exhaust, etc… such is life. In a points driven show this can be critical as a winner could be declared by as little as 1 point. In a “participant Choice” or “Top 40” show, I believe it still plays a part, but not as much. Not trying to start a war here, but looking for some ideas and opinions. You can reply offline if you wish your opinion not be made public. Thanks Donnie President Maryland Chevelle Club
[Chevelle-list] Have my '69 tail lamp bezels redone or use repros?
I am in the process of restoring a '69 Chevelle SS and trying to decide if I should have my tail lamp bezels fixed (i.e. pitting removed and rechromed)or just go with the repros. I have heard the repros are not exact (skinnier than the originals and don't really fit good). Has anyone had any experience having the tail lamp bezels restoredfor a '69 ... did you send them out? If so where, how did they do, and what was the charge?? How about the repros... any good? Thanks in advance Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] question on '67 rear
Jim, It will be a direct bolt in... and you will not need the spring cups to bolt down the bottom of the springs to the rear they will just sit right on top of the perches. Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] 70 Reverse Lock Out
Jerry, Based on your question I'm assuming the key won't come out of the column when you're putting the car into reverse and shutting off the ignition. If that's the case, take the hair pin out of the base of the steering column (under the hood ) and then go inside the car and manually roll the shift bowl on the steering column to a point where the key comes out. I'd temporarily mark the column with a piece of tape to hold the adjustment and go back under the hood and find out how far off you are. You may find that the linkage may be installed incorrectly or is just way out of adjustment. Another piece of trivia that I'd like to mention is that 4 spd column and automatic floor shift columns are not the same. The lever arm at the base of the column is shorter on 4 spd columns and you will not be able to adjust the difference out. Good luck Donnie

[Chevelle-list] Trying to identify a frame
Hey All, Just picked up a frame and trying to identify what it may be from it' boxed... 114-115 inches long and has these numbers on the drivers side right behind the wheel Parish 3943351 2669-2 It also has a power steering box #5691676 still mounted to it. The rear has the code is CB 0830 B ... which equates to a open 10-bolt 3:36 ... 65-68... more likely a '68 as it appears to be the longer rearand doeshave the cups for the springs...still need to take a good measurement. Any Ideas??? Thanks Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] 66 rear question
Jim, Look on the axle housing on the passenger side of the car... could be on the top... or bottom... most likely on the bottom... you will find a code... 2 letters... 4 digits.. 1 letter. You can then decode the code at www.chevelles.com ... rear codes... will tell you what it is... unless someone has changed it without you knowing it. Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] Q: Rear coils?
Might mean you dont have the original rear in the car??? Donnie
Re: [Chevelle-list] Q: Rear coils?
Pelle, Depends on the year 1964-early 1967... the coil springs are bolted to the rear. Bolt goes through the the bottom of the mount on the rear and has what looks like a "huge washer" that goes inside the bottom of the coil spring. The top does not get bolted in. Late 67-72, they went with what they call a "cup" design. The shocks just sit on the rear...on this cup...no bolts. No bolts on the top either. Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] Off-Topic elCamino Monster Garage
I agree Clint. I too was a fan of monster garage until that episode... totally destroying an El Camino is a sin in itself but to bring back the former owner of the car and show him what you have done to it is a huge slap in the face especially after you bought the car under false pretense. Yes, I know some will say he bought the car and has every right to do with it what he pleases... but I bet you if the former owner had known what he was going to do with the car... he would have never sold it to him. Don't know the guy personally, but he sure looks like a real jerk!! May be just to raise the ratings of the show.IMO Donnie
