Re: [Clamav-users] Missing Freshclam after upgrade to clamav-0.90.3-1.fc7

2007-09-16 Thread Graeme Nichols
Hi,

I am sorry to have caused so much traffic on this subject and all the replys
have included substantive information that I have taken to heart but I still
have a question and a statement.

1. The package I used to upgrade clamav was built by Redhat/Fedora for F7 so
surely should be able to be trusted for use on a Fedora 7 system. Sure,
packages from other package builders could have been built on any distro or
release and *could* introduce problems.
2. Why has there been a change in the packaging of clamav? Freshclam is
essential to the operation of clamav and *should* be in the same package as
clamav.

I have installed AVG for Linux for the present until the clamav problem is
sorted. Simple package installation and setup. For my system it works
extremely well.

Thanks to everyone who has responded. Your views are appreciated and
respected,

Regards,

Graeme.

That way, you can easily uninstall or rerun the build with the same
  flags.

That's exactly right, and it's just what I've been doing for the past
decade or so that I've been using Linux. It's sooo useful to be
able to go to one place to find out what you have to do when you last
upgraded that sendmail milter/ssl library/apache module...

Package managers are fine if you package things yourself, but if you
rely on others to produce the packages then it's only a matter of time
until someone packages something in a way which doesn't fit well with
something that you're already doing. I've rarely used one for more
than a couple of weeks before that's happened.

Sure, it's a nuisance to have to document what you've done.

But if this was easy, anybody could do it. :)

With F7, the maintainers seem to have split clamav into even more

freshclam is in the clamav-update package. This was gleaned from
inspection of the clamav packages in F7 updates dated 06-Sep-2007.

There seems to me to be quite a mess with clamav and F7. My previous
install (an update of previous installs) was
clamav-0.90.2-27.fc6.at.i386.rpm and it contained the whole kaboodle. After
upgrading to F7 clamav no longer worked. I then did a 'yum update clamav'
which resulted in the half baked install of clamav-0.90.3-1.fc7. Some
dependencies were installed but none associated with clamav directly or
clamav-update or clamav-server or any other clamav related package. The
clamav program is totally useless without the ability to update the virus
sig. file. Seems like a cock-up to me :-(
 **

I'm not sure why they did this, but I guess it helps reduce the number
of programs required for a minimal install. Still, to update a server
running clamd, you would need to update clamav, clamav-data or
 clamav-data-empty, clamav-filesystem, clamav-lib, clamav-server, and
clamav-update. Of course, if you're using the milter, then you also
 need clamav-milter.

No. I cannot understand it either. Thanks for the info Bill.

One option. But one that is guaranteed to cause future problems on an
 rpm
  based system.

Only if you continue to not know what you're doing. None of this is a
problem when you are the one who knows what you're doing, in fact.

Well, I have a pretty good idea what I am doing but by no means would I call
myself an expert. I *do* know from my own experience and from others that if
one installs an application from the source code (./configure; make; make
install) you have a better than even chance of having two versions of the
application installed if for some reason a later version of the application
is installed from a rpm package and this can cause some interesting
problems.

It would be *very* handy if all application tarballs had a 'make uninstall'
option. Only very few bother to include such an option at the moment so it
is a find as find can exercise to remove all the old bits and pieces of an
application before installing a new version.

Another *feature* that very few developers include in their source tarballs
in a spec file. If they did then one could build an rpm binary package
extremely simply using the command rpmbuild -tb [tarball name]. However, it
does mean extra work and testing for the developers who are doing it in
their own time. The biggest problem in this scenario is the huge number of
distros all doing their own thing, putting files in their own places and not
based on a core standard. It would be easy if all distros were based around
a core standard and their own bells and whistles added around that core
standard. *Perhaps* then a standard spec file would work on all distros but
I guess this is a simplistic view by someone who uses my system as a working
tool rather than a thing to experiment with.

Thanks for your help as every problem is a chance to learn something.

Moral of the story? If your system is based on a package manager, such as
Fedora, then stick to it if at all possible.

Hello Andrew,

The errors you are getting mean that you can't upgrade because some
installed items are needed by your existing version of calmav.

Uninstall your existing version of clamav and then install the new version.
It has worked for me before.

[Clamav-users] Error when starting clamd at boot time

2007-06-25 Thread Graeme Nichols
Hello,

I have begun to get the following error when starting clamd at boot time.

ERROR:

Please define server type, Local and/or TCP

I have checked the clamd.conf file and can find no place to define the
server.

I noticed that clamd had stopped starting at boot time (the virus definition
file was not being updated automatically) so I used the GUI to set it to
start at boot time and now I get the above error.

However, if I then run freshclam I am told that the definition file is up to
date.

My system is FC6 recently upgraded from FC4

Any ideas anyone?

OK, Thanks Rene. I think my problem is that I am using an old version of
clamd.conf. I found a new clamd.conf (clamd.conf.rpmnew) which I guess I
should be using.

Will give it a whirl and let you know.

Thanks again.

[Clamav-users] Errors with freshclam

2007-02-28 Thread Graeme Nichols

Hello,

I sorry to worry you all but I have just upgraded from .88 to .90 on my
laptop after upgrading from FC4 to FC6 which caused my .88 install of
clamav to barf. I experienced a heap of errors regarding user and group
'clamav'. I checked the user and group of the files in /var/lib/clamav
and they were 100 101 respectively. As root I couldn't change them to
clamav:clamav either getting the same error 'invalid user'. So I removed
clamav and reinstalled the FC6 binary after deleting /var/lib/clamav.
The user and group were now clamav:clamav.

Running 'freshclam' I got the following errors. What do I need to do to
fix the errors? Thank you.

Hello Gary, Thank you. I managed to get it working *after* I realised
there were two .conf files involved. I hang my head in shame:-)

I was making the changes to clamd.conf and getting back error messages
relating to those changes that freshclam didn't like and *also* error
messages relating to boolean being required. When I realised that there
was a freshclam.conf file I made the change in it as well and lo and
behold, it all worked.

When I installed the .rpm binary for 0.90 it didn't overwrite my old
freshclam.conf but installed the new freshclam.conf file as
freshclam.conf.rpmnew. It installed no new clamd.conf.

At least there is a side benefit to stupidity/ignorance, one gets to
learn a lot one wouldn't normally do if all went without error. :-)

Thank you again for your help. Much appreciated.

[Clamav-users] Problem with clamd.conf

2007-02-21 Thread Graeme Nichols
I suddenly started having the following problem today. The error message
is pretty explicit but freshclam is being picky with my 'fix'

The initial error follows:

sort of, but with the following output:

Can someone tell me what the format for that argument is supposed to be
please?

My clamd.conf file is attached if that helps.

Since there may be some RH/FC specific init files, etc., I'd start
with the SRPM file (clamav-0.90-1.src.rpm). Install this, then
use the spec file to build for FC6 (rpmbuild -bb clamav.spec).

-Bill

Hello Bill, Thank you very much for the info. I downloaded the spec file
and both the binary and src .rpm files for 0.90. I thought that I would
see if the .rpm binary would install on FC6 first before I built from
the .src.rpm file *and it did* No longer getting the 'out of date'
warning. It seems much faster as well.

So all is well thanks to your help. Much appreciated.

[Clamav-users] Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: crash-hat

2007-02-17 Thread Graeme Nichols
I have followed the instructions explicitly to add the ClamAv repository
to yum.

However, I get the following error:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] yum.repos.d]# yum update clamav

Error: Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: crash-hat
[EMAIL PROTECTED] yum.repos.d]#

I went to the http://crash.fce.vutbr.cz/crash-hat/6/repodata/repomd.xml
looking for the repomd.xml file. It wasn't there because there is no '6'
directory under http://crash.fce.vutbr.cz/crash-hat/. '5' is the highest
directory.

When will '6' be added so I can update ClamAv??

Thanks.
