Re: Stus-List CC 30 mkII preventers

2014-06-17 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List
I use a high quality climbing descender attached to the boom and a 3/4 line
attached to two quick release snap shackles on port and starboard. If you end
up jibing, the descender allows the boom to move over in a very controlled
manner almost in slow motion. This is basically a cheap version of the
commercially available boom breaks.

Stus-List CC 38 mk1 vs mk2

2014-06-17 Thread Stevan Plavsa via CnC-List
Hi All,

I can't seem to find what the cut-off date was for the 38 between the mk1
and the mk2. Any ideas? I'm not buying a new boat anytime soon but you
know, window shopping and maintaining a short list. Sailboatdata lists the
MK2 as having IOR specific changes over the MK1, not sure what that means
though? The MK3 is a totally different boat. The 38 has really grown on me
and I think it's a really pretty boat. I've read that at least one or two
have circumnavigated and they are a lot of boat for the money. Just looking
for more info.

Thanks,

Stus-List Raymarine c97

2014-06-17 Thread Bill Bina - gmail via CnC-List
I'm starting to research my next chartplotter. I've always bought Garmin
beginning with a gpsmap76s, through a gpsmap276c, to my present
gpsmap526. I do not want anything with a touch screen. I've used them
and hate them. I want physical buttons. So far, the front runner seems
to be the Raymarine C97 with built in sonar capability, and included
lighthouse vector charts. I like the idea that this unit will also
accept input from Raymarine's digital RADAR antenna. I have an aging
Furuno Radar, and I plan to replace it within the next couple of years.
Digital, with it's low power consumption and enhanced close-up abilities
seems like the way to go for coastal sailing.

So, my questions is, has anyone else had experience using a Raymarine C97?

Thanks for any input,
Bill Bina

Stus-List Sailing the Chesapeake Bay Bucket List Item: Check!

2014-06-17 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List

Sailing the Chesapeake bay bucket list item: Check!

We were on a family vacation at the Jersey shore and met up with Chuck
Scheaffer. When Chuck offered a ride on Resolute which is now berthed on a
river off the Chesapeake we jumped at the opportunity. It was a chance to
hang out with Chuck, sail on his boat, the family was excited about the
ride, plus I had been wanting to sail the Chesapeake for decades...

It's really all it's cracked-up to be. Gorgeous scenery, smooth water,
Annapolis, and access to the ocean / ICW. We had strong 12-17+ knots winds
and sunny / mild temps. It could not have been better. What a fantastic
day.

Resolute as a well outfitted speed machine.. It was a blast to sail around.

Big thanks to Chuck: He was the most gracious host and the whole family
loved it. I'll have to find more excuses to to back to the DC area and do
this again :-)

Re: Stus-List Annapolis to Bermuda Race nearing finish

Steve’s keel/centerboard arrangement was perfect for this light air race; he
was able to smoke almost everyone through the Chesapeake, and he even caught up
with many of the Class 1 and 2 boats. Kinda depressing that it took us almost
three days to get out of the Bay…

Also, we were one of several boats (mostly Class 1) that paid for and attending
a weather briefing by Jennifer Clark. The Office was the only boat in the
briefing that following the weather routing. We actually did make up some time
once we were out of the Chesapeake, but by then, it was a bit late.

Stus-List De-registering re-registering

2014-06-17 Thread Alex Giannelia via CnC-List
I know this topic has been covered in the past, so bear with me.

My boat was exported to the US possibly as early as the date of manufacture,
then received a Documentation number (evidenced by a carved sign in the
forepeak starting with the letters DOC and mentioning a tonnage. No MASTER
BUILDER's certificate

Then around 1988, sustained such substantial damage in the starboard stern
quarter that the HIN was removed as part of the repair.

Then in 1990, it was exported to Canada where it was licenced and we are we
believe the 3rd owner in Canada since 2001.

Now, I want to register this vessel and want to know from the US listers, how
can I confirm with the US authorities that it was de-registered in the US? I
would need an archive copy, so the Canadian authorities are assured it isn't
registered in a foreign country.

I recall looking up a web site which was rather opaque, so any help would be
appreciated.

Cheers!

Hi Mike,

I'm trying to catch up with the list, so sorry for the late reply!

I was in a similar situation to yours 4 years ago (wedges falling down below)
and also went for Spartite. I really like the solution and wouldn't go back to
wood wedges. After four years, the spartite is still sound and strong.

I grew up sailing on racing boats.
None had furlers, ie with jibsheets on furled sails, fouling the pole downhaul
and also the pole itself.
After 4 years with DG I still have to sort out the arrangement every time we
fly the chute.
And God help us if we have to gybe.

Can someone explain: Imagine the headsail furled with sheets going back to
starboard and port amidships.
Should I be routing the pole downhaul (which is on a pillowblock center
foredeck) a. between the jib sheets, b. to one side of them or the other?
Are there any odd requirements for a gybe, ie a re-route?

I thought of taking a bungee cord and tying the jibsheets up near the tack of
the jib. That would make it like the old days.

This has got to be simpler than I'm making it right now. Thanks for any tips.

Stus-List Water tanks

2014-06-17 Thread Burt Stratton via CnC-List
Hi all,

This may seem like a trivial question but I just took ownership of a 1974 33
three quarter tonner. Going through the boat for the first time I found that
there is no water tank but it seems like there was one at some time. There
is a water fill on the deck connected to nothing and a small sink in the
galley just below the companionway with no drain connected. My question
is: did these boats come stock with a water tank (or option for one) and if
so where would it have been located? I would like to install one but don't
see much room except aft below the cockpit.

Re: Stus-List Water tanks

2014-06-17 Thread Burt Stratton via CnC-List
Thanks for the response, Edd.

That makes sense. Even just a 20 gallon tank would weigh in at close to
200lbs when full. I would think it would affect balance to have just one. I
will look again under the main cabin seating. The 33 three quarter tonner is
laid out very differently from even the MK type 33s. Head is forward, no V
berth. 2 quarter berths and 2 single berths in the main cabin (seating).
Spartan to say the least. I think one of the former owners set her up for
racing, thus the lack of fresh water tanks, etc.

Re: Stus-List Black mold spots on teak interior

2014-06-17 Thread Bill Coleman via CnC-List
I did this in a wooden bathroom with detergent and a bit of bleach. ( and
ventilation)

Do not mix bleach and ammonia N

After you clean it spray it with wet and forget, that should help keep it
away. Good ventilation is the best way to avoid it. Shortly after I bought
my boat, I took everything out, sprayed it down with a mixture of tide and
Bleach, they came in with a 4000# power washer. Smelled and looked great
after that.

Re: Stus-List Water tanks

2014-06-17 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Congrats on the new boat!
Don't let a water tank keep you from cruising or sailing.
Water tanks need plumbing and a pump and periodic sterilizing and winterizing.
If the water source gets tainted, you'll get that in your tank. We've learned
to just use water bottles for cooking and drinking ($4 for a 30pack) and a sun
shower for rinsing off after swimming and proper showers can be had at the
marina. You can also carry larger water containers like gallon jugs which you
can freeze in your refrigerator at home, take to the boat. Instead of buying
Ice, the frozen water jugs keep your ice box cold and become something you can
drink.

Pressurized water is on our project list, but very far down from sails, bimini,
dodger, better swim ladder, etc.

Subject: Stus-List Water tanks

Hi all,

This may seem like a trivial question but I just took ownership of a 1974 33
three quarter tonner. Going through the boat for the first time I found that
there is no water tank but it seems like there was one at some time. There is a
water fill on the deck connected to nothing and a small sink in the “galley”
just below the companionway with no drain connected. My question is: did these
boats come stock with a water tank (or option for one) and if so where would it
have been located? I would like to install one but don’t see much room except
aft below the cockpit.

Re: Stus-List CC 38 mk1 vs mk2

2014-06-17 Thread jtsails via CnC-List
Steve, the break between the Mk1 and Mk2 is a total mystery to me. I own Hull
#100 which was built in 1976 while Rick Brass has hull #47 built sometime in
1975? All evidence indicates that my boat is a Mk2 while Rick's is a Mk1. I
have been on both boats and I'll be darned if I can find any difference and in
my opinion there is no difference. My guess is that CC didn't like the
measurement certificate for the early boats and decided to call the next years
boat a Mk2 to get the boat remeasured (just a stab in the dark guess though).
Keep in mind that the 38 was designed as a large 1 tonner and the Mk1 was rated
slightly above the cut off. I have also noticed that the brochures on the the
website do not make any distinction in the different years. Various sources
list different dimensions for the beam measurement, and again I can't spot it
between the two boats. I suspect that is due to measuring the beam on deck
(narrower) versus the overall beam (wider). Some of the sources list the Mk1 as
being 6 narrower but that is about the amount of tumblehome in the sides. PHRF
also rates them the same.

Stus-List Posting Emails

2014-06-17 Thread Stu via CnC-List
One problem that arises every so often is that people send an email to the list
and it does not go through. The problem and solution is simple.

When you subscribe to the list, you register an email address. That email
address MUST appear in your “reply to” section of your email. If you
subscribed with a “gmail” account, any other reply to will not go through.

If you do not want to use your original email address, you must unsubscribe (or
have me do it) and then re-sub with the address you want to use.

Fred – does that make sense? Your gmail account won’t work but your spiritone
account will.

So glad I made this move and my wife is liking the change too. I hear
wonderful things about Corsica River, but first I must explore Magothy. So

Spectacular weekend of sailing in a new to me sailing venue; Saturday I met
new friends visiting from Georgia, sailing in 14 to 25 knots making 7.3
upwind and down. The next day, got my AC working, sailed flat water w 6 knots
wind, overnighted with the admiral at anchor, sunset dinner. Counting stars
and sipping wine until the moon rose from behind the treelined shore.
The third day my daughter joined us and we sailed to a different little cove

Sailing the Chesapeake bay bucket list item: Check!

We were on a family vacation at the Jersey shore and met up with Chuck
Scheaffer. When Chuck offered a ride on Resolute which is now berthed on a
river off the Chesapeake we jumped at the opportunity. It was a chance to hang
out with Chuck, sail on his boat, the family was excited about the ride, plus I
had been wanting to sail the Chesapeake for decades...

It's really all it's cracked-up to be. Gorgeous scenery, smooth water,
Annapolis, and access to the ocean / ICW. We had strong 12-17+ knots winds and
sunny / mild temps. It could not have been better. What a fantastic day.

Resolute as a well outfitted speed machine.. It was a blast to sail around.

Big thanks to Chuck: He was the most gracious host and the whole family loved
it . I'll have to find more excuses to to back to the DC area and do this again
:-)

Very different Corsica is very dark and silent right now. Occasional peacock
and owl calls is it.
