Stus-List Bluetooth Speakers on Deck

2016-04-02 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
We went with a DUEL stereo with digital radio and Bluetooth. Digital radio
doubles available choices and the bluetooth works great with my phone or iPad,
even when we watch movies from them.

You might want to consider that option.

Re: Stus-List Remove silicone

2016-04-02 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
3M makes a product that is specifically designed to remove silicone. Almost
nothing else will do it. Unfortunately I’ve used up my supply and can’t recall
the product name.

I learned about the stuff when rebuilding my A&H hatches, using Sika 295 as the
adhesive. The SIKA won’t properly adhere to the hatch frame if there is any
silicone residue (which there was, thanks to the PO). Perhaps the folks at Sika
can tell you the name of the product.

I am trying to reseal the windows on a C&C 29. The previous owner used
Silicone and I would like to remove it and use the butyl tape. I read that
carburetor cleaner works better than acetone. I am open to any suggestions.

The spacing on the machine screws also appear to be very large. I was thinking
about adding a few more screws at 5 to 6 inches apart.

Re: Stus-List LED Nav Lights

2016-04-02 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
Because by the definition in the ColRegs, a “Masthead” light is white and shows
over an arc of 225 degrees facing the bow of the boat. I know, I call it a
steaming light and that is what the switch on my switch panel says.

The all-around white light that you put on when you are at anchor, are aground,
etc. isn’t called an “Anchor Light” – even though that is what I have marked on
the switch. That is referred to as an All-around white light in the ColRegs.

If you have an Aux input you can get bluetooth receivers...saves
connecting a cable to i-device.

We've used UE Boom's on-board as they fit in the cupholders.

I had a carpenter do some work on my house last year. He had a pair of
waterproof pool speakers, Boom Swimmers, I think. They sounded nice.
Used his iPad.

After much deliberation and research, we decided to continue to use
Touche's built in stereo. No worries on battery life. We can connect
the Admiral's iPhone or one of our tablets to the stereo and away we
go. We have both cabin and cockpit speakers. We can use a playlist,
Pandoora or iHeart radio.

In my opinion, that's the way to go. Install a stereo with Bluetooth
or MP3 aux input and installed speakers.

It's a misnomer. The difference between masthead light and mast
headlight.

The headlight does just the same as on your car. Faces forward.

The masthead light is a light on the masthead.

Re: Stus-List Defender sale - Raymarine eS78 Navionics? plus SH GX2200 VHF/AIS

2016-04-02 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
Actually, the “S” in eS doesn’t mean sonar; the eS75 doesn’t have it. The “eS”
Series is an update of the “e” Series, with more of a glass-bridge look and a
slightly faster processor. I’d recommend going with that for Nate; as far as
pricing goes, I’m not sure I can compete with Defender during their sale, but I
can beat them the rest of the year.

Nate — consider getting the eS variant that comes bundled with the Navionics+
North America charts; that’ll give you detailed charts on both the US and
Canadian side of Lake Superior (and the rest of the Great Lakes). And unless
you’re planning on using the fish finder built into the eS78, you could just
get the eS75 without instead and save a few bucks.

You’ll also need to order the NMEA0183 data cable separately, as it’s not
included with the 7” eS Series; that’ll allow you to interface the GX2200 with
the MFD for AIS and DSC functions. The Raymarine part number is R70414.

Re: Stus-List A little help from our neighbors up north...

2016-04-02 Thread Dave Syer via CnC-List
A beautiful part of the world, though I may be biased. As mentioned
previously, the fundy side is a tide and fog (and whale) festival -
beautiful country but navigation and currents can be tricky close inshore.
If you are sailing north you will probably be intending to make your first
landfall somewhere between Yarmouth and Halifax. That stretch of coast is
known as the "south shore" and has great harbours civilized small towns,
huge secluded beaches and really beautiful scenery. (full disclosure, I
have a house in that area)
Be ready for morning fogs inshore. You are certainly not likely to be
becalmed, but before mid july you are not guaranteed sunny days, weather is
better in August, and at least on land, September is fantastic. You have
a great piece of coast there to cruise and anchor, stopping in at towns all
along the way. Shelburne is great, has a friendly yachtclub, all
services, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. (was a
marshalling point for WWII convoys) Halfway up the harbour Wave to my
house as you pass the 19th century lighthouse, look across the harbour, and
wave to my dad. If you see a tan coloured steel trawler yacht "J.
Michael" on a mooring in his "front yard" it's his. Check out what's going
on at The Osprey Theatre, have dinner at Charlotte lane. Reserve both in
advance. A short hop up the coast and anchor at carter's beach. Dinghy
to dinner dinner at "The Quarter Deck". I can vouch for the anchorages in
both places. (Dad was a steel-sailboated ocean cruiser - and has coastal
cruised this neighbourhood many times, by sail and now by trawler.)
Keep going up the coast to Mahone bay, check out when the wooden boat
festival is, hit the bakery, and continue to chester, check when race week
is. closest thing to Newport I suppose. ooops, I missed very beautiful
Lunenburg, but don't you miss that, and when you are there you must check
out the fisheries museum of the Atlantic. OK, back on track, by now you
are at Halifax. Lots to do there, great downtown, and don't miss the
market. Dinner at the bicycle thief. Your next stretch of coast is more
remote and rural. How's that for a start?
Real - Nova Scotians - I don't know all the anchorages, there are many
many, (Jordan bay and the LeHave River come to mind) but otherwise, how'd I
do? ;-)

Another thought - look at your chart and see the birthplace of Joshua
Slocum (yes, he was Canadian - ) Brier Island. It is at the end of a
chain of islands and truly feels like the end of the world, You can see the
shop where he toiled as a child (mentioned in SAATW) and understand why he
might have got the urge to ramble. If you can, go whale watching from
there, and go by zodiac, not on one of the big cape islanders. (local
inshore fishing boat type) Have done this twice with visitors and it has
been amazing, both times.

Oh yeah - you can get some pretty good seafood in the area. ;-)

2016-04-02 Thread Edd Schillay via CnC-List
Nate,

I'm looking to get the e95 myself. Raymarine looks to be top quality and very
well reviewed.

While it is the newer model, the "S" in the eS78 means the unit comes with
sonar, which has no use for me. So I'd rather save a few bucks and get the
older non-S model.

No matter which one you buy, software updates are free and there's a great
warranty.

And make sure you get the mobile app for your smartphone or tablet so you can
mimic the screen and use some of the controls remotely through the system's
WiFi.

All the best,

Re: Stus-List LED Nav Lights

2016-04-02 Thread allen via CnC-List
I tend to agree because the lamp is listed as AS 904-02200 festoon bulb in the
owner's manual whereas the fore deck lamp is a 904-00234 halogen bulb. Now,
who's seen the top of the mast anchor light which is listed as a Guest M7030?

They haven't been making these for a long time and the bulb is listed as 1004
bulb. That's no help. If there's clearance up there I'd rather replace the
whole unit with another Aqua Signal 25 unit.

That is not the LED you want for your steaming light. Certain Aqua Signal
Steaming Lights (such as the Aqua Signal Series 25 Masthead / Foredeck

for the fore deck.

An example is here on the Defender site:

The LED you have linked is the LED that replaces the incandescent bulb in that
fore deck flood.

Assuming you have and Aqua Signal Steaming light on your boat, the LED you want
for the steaming light portion of the fixture is probably this one:

As others here have said, the best sailing is from June – Sept. If you are
sailing in Southwest N.S. before the end of May, you have to be very wary of
lobster traps; lots of them. The Lobster season in districts 33 and 34 runs up
to the end of May; this is an area that covers Digby to Sheet harbour. The best
way to avoid getting tangled up is to avoid the shoals.
