Re: Stus-List Marine Surveyor Halifax,NS

2016-08-02 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I've had 3 different surveys all from various surveyors. It is my opinion
that the best survey is the one you do yourself and the best surveyor is
the cheapest. I've never had a surveyor who went to the depth of detail I
would have wanted. They are doing what almost anyone with an entry level
of boat knowledge could do. No engine. No rig. Not even a very in depth
look at the electrical or structure. Basic and common stuff that will
cause fires or sinking. Your money is far better spent buying a book about
how to perform your own survey. You can even buy their (the surveyor's)
moisture meters and IR cameras for less than the cost of the survey. You
perform the preliminary survey yourself. If you like what you see then pay
for the cheapest surveyor you can find just to get a check in the box for
the bank or insurance.

Stus-List Bad Vibes from Maxprop?

2016-08-02 Thread Chris Tirtirau via CnC-List
I got a strange vibration/sound coming from outside the hull, under the cockpit
floor, when motoring in my 37. After seeing two separate mechanics I was told
it was the rudder vibrating and creating harmonics as the water pushed by the
Maxprop flows by it. Apparently harmless but annoying and to me unsettling
nevertheless. I cannot reach cruising speed with that sound and vibration under
my feet.
Any ideas? I have the original 2-bladed prop. Should I revert to original, or
can anything be done about the Maxprop? I talked to the Maxprop people and I
had the pitch set according to their specs but it looks like the C rudder
design doesn't like it.

Iain Tulloch is excellent. Very thorough but if you just want in “insurance”
survey you might want to get somebody who doesn’t dig so deep as the insurance
companies will want every little thing mentioned in the survey addressed before
they will issue a policy.___

Re: Stus-List PHRF - 1990 C 34+DK

PHRF New England has base handicap of 81 for the 34/36 "R", 84 for the "XL",
and 87 for the regular one (the basic +, I think). These are all deeper keels
than the wing keep version that rates 102 base. I would think 105 is a fair
bit out.

Re: Stus-List mast collar straps

2016-08-02 Thread S Thomas via CnC-List
Tom,
many C 36 and 38 from around that year have had similar problems. I
have the same model and year of boat as you have, and I am relatively new to it
as well.

Part of what your are experiencing is just the "natural" reshaping and relaxing
of the hull and deck in response to stress over time. When in the water, the
weight of the keel and the load of the rig tension pushes the mast step and the
hull surrounding the keel down relative to the rest of the boat. The mast
straps, (which are occasionally and erroneously referred to as the partners),
are attached to the deck and pull it down to the extent that the mast step
moves down relative to the rest of the boat. When the boat is out of the water
these forces are either relieved (rig tension) or reversed (keel weight) and
the boat will take a few days to settle in again once back in the water. These
effects need to be taken into account before considering any remedial or
restorative action. Jacking up the mast a little bit to get the bolts in may be
the best solution if it is not too far. A small amount of load on the deck may
not be a bad thing. On my boat I think it is a bit too far since the deck
appears to be depressed around the mast collar by more than 1/2 an inch.

I can not see anything wrong with the transverse wood and fibreglass supports
immediately ahead of and behind the mast step box. What I have been told is
that sometimes the space under the box was filled with more or less random bits
of wood. fibreglass, and resin to build up a support platform, and that the
sinking mast syndrome in that case is due to that wood rotting and probably not
structural in any sense other than the loss of a shim under the mast. I have
not decided what to do with mine yet, but there is a 1978 C 38 at our club
which had a piece of aluminum plate cut to fit inside the step box, and it has
worked fine for a couple of decades now. That will be my solution unless I find
a good reason not to do it.

I too would welcome further information or experience from others who have
dealt with the same problem on the same or very similar boats.

  Hi,
This is my first season sailing after a season on the hard doing repairs.
When the yard re-stepped the mast the holes on the metal straps that bolt
through the mast no longer align. The holes on the mast are lower by 3/8". As
part of the rehab I had removed the mast collar. so I initially thought that I
used too much caulking in the installation. I removed the collar and scrapped
away all the caulking but the holes are still off. I wasn't there when the yard
had originally took out the mast so I'm not sure if there was anything under
the mast causing it to be slightly higher. I'm relunctant to drill a new set of
holes.
Any advice would be appreciated.

For the record you want to un-tighten the rig. Tightening should make it worse.
Even have Backstay off.
I put my straps on before putting my mast all the way in.

Tightening the rig didn't work. The next step was
to do like you suggested with adding something under the mast. I'm a little
apprensive of causing damage to the deck with just lifting and dropping.

Re: Stus-List mast collar straps

2016-08-02 Thread Sébastien Lemieux via CnC-List
Hi Tom,

a similar situation happened to us a few years ago. We solved it by attaching
the lower hole on the stainless strap to the bottom of the mast and bringing
them closer (1/2 inch in our case) using a home depot bought turnbuckle. It
worked, but the approach felt wrong.

I was under the impression that the correct way to do it would be to attach
the straps before the mast is completely lowered (and still attached to the
crane). Our boat's manual says: "NB: Before proceeding, be sure to attach the
deck collar tie-down straps to the mast below deck." This note appears at the
point where the weight of the mast is transferred from the crane to the step.

best,

Make sure all your halyards, vang, cunningham, etc are slackened if they

If you have any rig tension on that would do it.
Other options, assuming you haven't had any mast step work done is to raise the
mast up a bit, put the bolts in and drop it back down. Or shim the mast up to
the right height.

When my gooseneck broke (in a similar manner to what you describe), I removed
it from the mast and took it to a local machine shop. They made a replacement
out of stainless. Curved plate to mount to the mast with two tangs to hold the
stainless pivot pin. The spacing of the tangs was a bit off, so I put some
nylon fender washers in the stack as spacers for the end of the boom to ride on.

It wasn’t real expensive (though given the differential in costs from NC to RI,
it would probably cost you a lot more than it did me), and the fabrication took
a week or two.

Thanks Bettina. When I was evaluating the SailTimer app last summer, I found
the company to be very responsive to my questions about the software. I just
wish they were more communicative about estimated shipping dates of hardware
orders. I do read their newsletter; that is the only source of updates. They
don't have a phone number, and they are not responsive to email inquiries about
shipping dates (in fact they actually discourage such inquiries). I'm still
sold on the technical advantages of the product, but by the time I finally get
it, the sailing season will be almost over for the year.

Hatfield "was an inspiration to follow one's dreams and not be deterred despite
