Re: Stus-List 35 MK III

2017-07-27 Thread sender via CnC-List
Richard:
I recently bought a C 35 MkII in Vancouver, Fell in love with the boat.

I had a survey done on it. I knew there were some issues with it, I had
what I thought was a very close look at it. As it happens the surveyor
found a lot more problems to my surprise. so I reluctantly let it go. I'd
go for another one in a heartbeat.

I've never had a close look at a Mk III, but despite my bitter
disappointment I'd say go for it if the boat resonates with you. The key
is obviously is to make sure you get a purchase survey done on it. The
boat I looked at had a 3 year old insurance survey, and the seller
suggested it was "still good". Ha!

Before you make an offer, check out the availability of marina slips in
your area.

Good luck,
Eric

By the way, if you have need of a delivery captain who owns a C with full
credentials, I have a good friend who bought my C when I left Chicago.  He
teaches sailing classes and has done a number of Great Lakes deliveries.  I am
sure he would be reasonably priced as well.

Richard — there are a few other lakes connected to Lake Michigan, if I recall
my geography correctly… :^)

One of the the largest dealers (if not the largest) of C's throughout much of
the 70’s and 80’s was Sailboats, Inc; they sold tons of C all over Lake
Michigan and more on Lake Superior.  You may want to look on Superior, as well;
not too bad a delivery. I’ve done it a few times.

2017-07-27 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Richard,

I am among one of the many 35-III owners on the list here. I love mine. It is
a bit tender, but sails to its rating and wins a lot of races. It is
comfortable to cruise with two, but I’ve also raced with 7 on-board in the
Annapolis-to-Bermuda Race (on “The Office”, another35-III sistership).

The boat is a little tender. You will be one of the first people to reef, but
it points well and sails like a C should.

I did this project too, Here's a link to my photos.
https://photos.app.goo.gl/z0mpKkzmP4T12nrn1 One hint I learned, get a
Sterling "Glass Fab" jigsaw blade to cut the window openings. One blade
lasted for all four window opening and cut much better than any other
method I tried. You can get them from Jamestown distributing.

Can somebody point me to a thread discussing replacement of old
style aluminum framed portlights?
I have a 1977 C 30 Mark 1. The portlights were replaced
previously by the PO and I don't think they were
done correctly, so I don't have a reference to go by to do it
right. Are there any diagrams showing how the plexiglas
fits into the frame, where caulk should be applied, and how the
gasketing should fit (ie, I need a cross-section drawing of the
window construction so I can do it right).
I'm not trying to be lazy, but I can't figure out how to search
these archives.

I replaced Touche's galley port with a Lewmar opening port. Lets the fumes
from the alcohol stove out.

Pics can be seen here:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_sb5TfIENvsb3lSZzZBdzJuV3c

Unfortunately, the pic size is really small.

The only challenge is making sure the cabin exterior and interior pieces
are uniformly spaced so the are no gaps in the frame. I put dowel spacers
between them.

I agree that opening ports are the way to go. They really help getting
fresh air down below (do not leave them open while sailing as someone will
step through). I made the conversion on my 34, which had the old-style oval
windows. I can't make the conversion on my 42, however, because the sides
of the cabin top are too rounded. You need a relatively flat surface for
opening ports.

Mark,
Your boat is now 40 years old.you might want to consider not replacing 40
year old parts and methods with the same 40 year old stuff

15 years ago, I replaced my 1977 ..38 ports with new Lewmar opening
ports...with screens included
The openings on mine were about 1/8" smaller and it was a no brainer go enlarge
them a bit .the result is a nice clean .modern look and functioning
ports

Pictures available on request.

Can somebody point me to a thread discussing replacement of old style aluminum
framed portlights?
I have a 1977 C 30 Mark 1. The portlights were replaced previously by the PO
and I don't think they were
done correctly, so I don't have a reference to go by to do it right. Are there
any diagrams showing how the plexiglas
fits into the frame, where caulk should be applied, and how the gasketing
should fit (ie, I need a cross-section drawing of the
window construction so I can do it right).
I'm not trying to be lazy, but I can't figure out how to search these archives.

CG capacity on a boat that size would be about 6 or 7 people.  You just have to
wonder if the owner who put 12 aboard has any semblance of a brain.  Perhaps he
could find his again spending time behind bars.

Re: Stus-List Rigid boom vangs - rivets vs screws

2017-07-27 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
One thing to remember about the Garhauer vang is that the attachment to both
the mast and the boom are custom made for the boat (you send them the profile
of the mast and boom when you order the vang), and the plates attached to the
mast and boom wrap significantly around the spars. (On my 25 about half of the
boom is cradled in the attached plate. ) So the fasteners connecting the plate
to the spar are under primarily shear loading, not tensile.

For this sort of configuration, the additional cross section of the machine
screw (or cap screw, if you use those) would seem the better choice. If,
however, you have something like a Boomkicker, or a vang with “generic”
mounting plates that don’t curve around the spars, rivets might be a better
choice.

BTW, both have Garhauer vangs.

When I got my rigid vang from Garhauer, they suggested the course threads.
The fine threaded screws, they argued are shallower, and therefore will strip
or pull out easier.

It might be a good idea to call Garhauer for verification.

Good luck,

Bruce

I would add that fine threads would be better than coarse for the relatively
thin section.

Re: Stus-List C 30 boomvang issue

2017-07-27 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
Hi Bill,

I would lean towards SS rivets as suggested by Dennis and others. You will
need to get the
diameter of the hole but also the combined thickness of the fitting and mast.
Fogh has a good
assortment of the rivets. You can get the compound riveter from Princess Auto.

On the LO300 with all the reaching not having a vang was likely a significant
problem. Did
you rig a temporary block or anything?

flooded the boat no doubt. Yikes!

That particular area at the wrong time is treacherous even for my 40. It
happens on a regular basis unfortunately. I hope the eight-year-old is fine.
