Re: Stus-List Deal on starter from Mastry

2017-09-11 Thread Ronald B. Frerker via CnC-List
On my Universal, it was the solenoid; took dozens of button pushes.  Then it
did it again a year later, only not nearly as bad.  The mechanic rewired so the
starter button and glow plugs were no longer interconnected.  The voltage drop
caused by the glow plug was the culprit apparently.  Now I let up the glow plug
and hit the starter and it seems to work fine.Mechanic didn't think it should
ever have been wired so that the glow plug had to be pushed for the starter
button to function.RonWild CheriC 30-1STL

Francois gave you some good things to look at.  My first shot would be a dirty
start button/switch.  I'd try jumping across the back of the switch.
As for starters, boat on my pier had a Volvo diesel.  Starter went bad.  Volvo
starter was north of $700.  Lo and behold, it uses the same starter as a
Mitsubishi Lancer which can be bought for less than $100.
As it turned about, it wasn't the starter.  I ended up with the old starter if
anybody out there has a Volvo (or a Lancer) and needs a spare.  It's been
tested.

Re: Stus-List Deal on starter from Mastry

2017-09-11 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Ouch! 1000 Bucks is steep. The Kubota alternative sounds a lot better.

I'm not much of a believer in the bigger wire. If it was big enough when
designed 30 + years ago, it's still big enough. Perhaps a bigger wire would
bandaid the symptom for a while.

It can be any number of things:

-The switch, on a Yanmar there's no relay (bad) so the brunt of the current
goes through the post button thingie. I replaced mine last year when it
started doing it occasionally. It's seemed to put a bandaid on it for a
while. Not sure how it's done on a Universal

-The connections to the starter or switch. Mine were clean and tight. (And
new on the switch side)

- The solenoid
- The brushes
- The winding

For me it started doing it very infrequently last year and got
progressively worse this year.

What sealed the deal for me was the prior weekend. It usually took 2 pushes
when cold at the beginning of the weekend then got better. On that weekend
it started right up when cold and took 3 pushes (one more than usual) after
sailing for a few hours.

At that point I knew that

 1) A no go situation was probably pretty close around the corner
2) The completely random nature of the failure meant that the winding was
more than likely the culprit as where it happens to stop on the commutator
determines your faith.

I also knew that at most I would pay 265 bucks for an equivalent Hitachi
unit on eBay so there was no use in fooling with brushes or solenoids on a
27 year old starter, the bearings / winding could not be much further
behind if the problem was the solenoid or brushes..

And yes, now it starts right up at the smallest tickle of the start button.

I hope this helps..

Good luck,

François

Stus-List Alternator Belts

2017-09-11 Thread coltrek via CnC-List

That happened to me three times in a row this summer, on a 6 day cruise /race.
I went through three belts. I had just installed Three brand new Deep Cycle
batteries. I called the Balmar tech line, and the fellow there kind of walked
me through setting the regulator down to only charging at 60% instead of 95%. I
don't know why it started to do it in the first place, but I think that it
might have had something to do with my heart interface 2000 acting up. Anyways,
after the trip, I reset the heart 2000 back to factory defaults, and it started
working properly again. I'm not sure if I should ramp my regulator back up to a
higher charging level or not. One thing I did after that, is I bought a Balmar
regulator temperature sensor. I think it cuts the charging back and the load if
it gets too hot.

before I get into trouble, and cant start the engine in an emergency.

Speaking of an emergency, after finishing a race, yesterday, we dropped the
chute and started the engine, as we approached a railroad bridge.  We suddenly
smelled smoke, and when we opened the cockpit hatch, smoke poured out.  After
closer inspection of the engine, we discovered the alternator belt had been
slipping,  It got hot, melted and got stuck to the engine pulley.  Luckily I
had an extra belt on board, and a half hour later the repair was completed.

Stus-List Perko sea strainer failed - almost lost my boat!

2017-09-11 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
I just replaced mine about 5 months ago. I luckily ran into an NOS one for
half price at the marina swap meet about 2 years ago. I finally put it in
this year when we re-did my fuel system.

Mine had not actually failed, it was just a bit leaky, weeping some when
underway. I figured it couldn't hurt to replace it since I could get one
for 50% off. I'm glad I did!

BTW, I never leave the boat without closing all seacocks.. One failed hose
(Or strainer..) and it's bye bye baby. I read in the Boat US mag that along
with electrical fires it's the most frequent culprit for total boat
losses.

Yesterday as we were sailing back to the dock one of my crew yelled
'there's a lot of water down here'. I opened the companionway steps and
saw water coming out of the top of the sea strainer as the water was
 reaching the top of it.

I closed the seacock and we manned the manual pump. Once the water was
below the floorboards we let the electric do its job.

One of the arms that held the lid in place broke at the lower end.
Luckily we were aboard and found the leak. There was not excessive
corrosion on the strainer, so I don't think the weakness could have been
detected. Time to re-think leaving seacocks open when I'm off the boat!

Those are massive hoses and through hull you have on your boat. I'm thinking
the strainer top is 2" and the hoses are in the 1/2" range.

I'll second all that Edd said, and add what a great bunch of people were there.
Lots of insight and lots of laughs. And lots of beverages. The location was
great, with excellent facilities and Aldo's Coffee literally at the edge of
the marina. Hamilton Park Marina will be a destination for me again. Can't wait

Re: Stus-List Perko sea strainer failed - almost lost my boat!

2017-09-11 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Touche' has one of the Perkos on the engine cooling. However, the strainer
on the air conditioner is a Groco. Like this:

https://www.groco.net/products/raw-water-strainers/basket-strainer/arg-series

Except it has a bronze cap. I'm tempted to replace the Perko with a
Groco. I don't like the plastic cap, however. If you had a spare cap at
least you could screw a new one in and keep your engine running.

That flip down fastener on the Perko isn't easy to inspect. One side is
usually up against a bulkhead.

Stus-List Perko sea strainer failed - almost lost my boat!

2017-09-11 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Yesterday as we were sailing back to the dock one of my crew yelled
'there's a lot of water down here'. I opened the companionway steps and
saw water coming out of the top of the sea strainer as the water was
reaching the top of it.

I closed the seacock and we manned the manual pump. Once the water was
below the floorboards we let the electric do its job.

One of the arms that held the lid in place broke at the lower end. Luckily
we were aboard and found the leak. There was not excessive corrosion on
the strainer, so I don't think the weakness could have been detected. Time
to re-think leaving seacocks open when I'm off the boat!

Yep, cut that elbow to fit and use a coupler to connect to the fill hose.

I just measured my fuel tank.27" wide, 16" deep, 12" height+7"

the in fill on the tank has a 90 deg. intake to make connecting the in hose

Re: Stus-List Fuel tank replacement

2017-09-11 Thread David Kaseler via CnC-List
Lots of folks have been talking about fuel tank fill and advising a 90 degree
intake for simpler hose attachment.
SLY has two fuel tanks, one plastic under the cockpit where the original
aluminum one was with a straight vertical intake hose connection, plus another
stainless tank forward under the settee on the starboard side where the settee
forms an L next to the stove. This one has a 90 degree intake configuration.
If I need to remove fuel from the after tank it is easy to temporarily remove
the filler hose from the tank, lead a siphon hose down from the deck fitting
into the tank and reconnect the filler hose. I'm unable to get the siphon hose
past the flange on the plastic tank without temporarily removing the filler
hose but that's not a big deal.
If I need to remove fuel from the forward tank with the 90 degree intake it
becomes much more difficult. The siphon hose does not want to go around the
corner formed by the 90 degree intake. I'm able to force it around the corner
but it always scrapes some the rubber from the siphon hose and deposits it into
the tank. So far this has not caused a problem but it sure could if these
scrapings were sucked up into the pickup tube.
So, something else to think about.
Regards,
Dave. Kaseler
