Re: Stus-List Adjustable Genoa Cars, 1994 C&C 37/40+

2017-12-19 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
That has not been my experience with the Garhauer cars on my 38. Moving the car
forward under load is usually a 1 handed operation – though close hauled with
the 155 in 15 knots did take 2. The car doesn’t come back past a certain point
if you leave the control line cleated when you crank the sail in, and then
release the control line. Though the point where it stops in close to average
trim point.

But if you uncleat the control line as you trim the sail, the car comes back as
you load up the sheet and you can stop it at the proper trim by simply pulling
the control line into the cam cleat. (And, of course, once you’ve adjusted the
trim on STBD, you set the other car while it is not loaded up.)

Then again, my Garhauer EZ G2UB cars are ball bearing cars. And the sheet lead
aft of the genoa car is to a turning block on the toe rail and pretty much
flush to the deck (and not rising up to the level of the winch.)

As much as I like my robust Garhauer cars, Ted’s observations are spot on. We
have to put a winch on fore and aft movement under a heavy load (even with a
4:1 purchase to go forward).

I had Harken adjustable cars on my C&C 29-2 and now on my C&C 110. They are
expensive but they work so much better than other adjustable cars that I've
used on some of my friend's boats. As a direct real world comparison, one of my
friends who also had a 29-2 had Garhauer make custom genoa cars to fit on his
existing Merriman tracks. The fit was great but they were extremely difficult
to adjust under load. When the tension on the control line was released, the
car would not move aft. Even when there was a considerable wind load on the
sail which should have been enough to allow it to move on its own. He had to
pull on a line that was attached to the rear of the car to move it aft. In
fairness, the Garhauer cars did not have ball bearings like the Harken cars
have. My present boat is approximately the same size as your boat and the loads
generated by the genoa are similar too. I have no problem adjusting the lead
location even when the sail is fully loaded. I would think that if you
installed a Garhauer car on a boat larger than the 29-2, you may be
disappointed unless you don't mind unloading the sheet before you make a
forward adjustment to the car.

If your old cars are Harken then they are not standard track size. Likely
Harken 32mm track. Garhaurer does not make cars that fit Harken track. Best bet
is to replace with track from garhauer. I just went through this exercise
upgrading from Harken 22mm track and Genoa cars to 27mm Harken track and cars.
Not as painful an exercise as had imagined

Hello all,

I was wondering if you folks might be able to give me some guidance. I ordered
adjustable Genoa track cars from Garhauer, and even sent them a photo of the
track. When they got here, the cars won't fit - they will not even slide over
the track. I sent new photos to Garhauer, and Guido looked at them and
informed me that not only do they not make adjustable cars that fit, they can't
even custom make them.

Have you folks obtained adjustable cars, and if so, from where?

Re: Stus-List Networking Some Old Instruments & AIS Receiver

2017-12-19 Thread Tim Rutherford via CnC-List
Hi Fred,

Thanks for your thoughtful response! I appreciate real-world experience
over reading between the lines of technical literature any day.

The Raymarine literature reads "
*Power must be supplied by either the SeaTalk network OR the SeaTalkng bus;
it must not be powered from both sides. If present, the preferred power
supply method is via a connected autopilot*."

To me this means the source of DC power can be the autopilot, but now I
understand it must be fed through a standard power tee or a converter port.
Please let me know if that's not right.

In any case, I'll plan to extend the SeaTalkNG buss using standard NMEA
2000 hardware for future non-proprietary compatibility and will use either
a power tee or a port on the converter to power the buss.

Your input is appreciated, I will be in touch for a quote once the details
of the BOM are finalized.

The Genoa Tracks on our 1990 C&C 37/40 XL have line adjustable cars and are
made by Harken USA. It is possible the factory may have installed
different manufacturer's tracks, depending on what the original owner
ordered, but ours are Harken.

At the same time, our Babystay Track and the other short Genoa Tracks with
pin stop cars on the coach roof are all made by Schaefer Marine.

Hello all,
I was wondering if you folks might be able to give me some guidance.  I ordered
adjustable Genoa track cars from Garhauer, and even sent them a photo of the
track.  When they got here, the cars won't fit - they will not even slide over
the track.  I sent new photos to Garhauer, and Guido looked at them and
informed me that not only do they not make adjustable cars that fit, they can't
even custom make them.

I have hit a snag with my project. My CP180 plotter is refusing to take AIS
input on any NMEA port.
The firmware version is from 2008, so I think I'll be sending it back to
S-H for a firmware upgrade. This will cost about $35, which

IMHO is quite reasonable and also a nice contrast to brand R, which tends
to tell you "buy a new one" as the answer to any issue with any old
equipment.
Another issue is not a big deal but just odd, the AIS seems to not be
sending out the GPS per satellite signal quality string. On the computer
and the plotter I can see the position and HDOP just fine, but no
individual satellite signal levels.

On the good news side, the waterproof junction boxes and glands I got from
Amazon are working out well.

The AIS is also connected to OpenCPN and it works fine. The data is definitely
coming out of the AIS unit. The AIS is a GPS receiver as well and sends AIS and
GPS data out of the 38.4K port. Usually a GPS will send the satellites in view
and their signal strength, but the Digital Yacht unit is not doing this. The
plotter will read 4800 baud data, but the AIS will not send AIS data from that
port, only GPS. I think S-H needs to update the firmware to fix this issue.

Have you tried connecting the AIS to a PC running OpenCPN or something similar
to test the AIS box?

Why would the AIS send out GPS sat signals?

Waterproof boxes look nice.

I've got my Daisy2 AIS receiver connected to my onboard PC. Amazing how many
boats leave their AIS on all winter! Must have had 50 targets Sunday, and only
1 tug was moving.

The firmware version is from 2008, so I think I'll be sending it back to S-H
for a firmware upgrade. This will cost about $35, which
IMHO is quite reasonable and also a nice contrast to brand R, which tends to
tell you "buy a new one" as the answer to any issue with any old equipment.
Another issue is not a big deal but just odd, the AIS seems to not be sending
out the GPS per satellite signal quality string. On the computer and the
plotter I can see the position and HDOP just fine, but no individual satellite
signal levels.
On the good news side, the waterproof junction boxes and glands I got from
Amazon are working out well.

Have you tried connecting the AIS to a PC running OpenCPN or something
similar to test the AIS box?

Why would the AIS send out GPS sat signals?

Waterproof boxes look nice.

I've got my Daisy2 AIS receiver connected to my onboard PC. Amazing how
many boats leave their AIS on all winter! Must have had 50 targets Sunday,
and only 1 tug was moving.
