Stus-List cockpit drain seacocks

2018-05-23 Thread Dan via CnC-List
I'm on the hard. I have these two giant bronze seacocks for my cockpit
drain hoses.

photos on google drive:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=12TWUN1oiyiACR0IvaBKlEo2HqdzPMmqY

I have no clue how old they are but they are totally seized in the open
position. I've tried WD-40, a heat gun and a rubber mallet but can't get
them to budge.

My question is should I rip these out and put in some sort of replacement
or should I just leave them. When will I ever want to close seacocks to the
cockpit drains?
Clearly the previous owner was not in the habit of closing these.

What should I do?

Jim’s boat has a Westerbeke 35D engine (3 cyl, 35HP) and Borg Warner BW7
transmission, with the usual V drive arrangement of a LF38. Engine and
transmission were both newly installed in 2010. Had 140 hours on engine when
the boat was purchased in 2015. About 200 hours on it now, as Jim has said.
Seal on the hydraulic pump in the Borg Warner transmission failed during the
delivery from Charleston to Washington, NC in 2015 (seal had dried out during a
couple of years when the engine only accumulated 4 hours of use by the PO,
apparently). So the transmission was rebuilt at that time. There is a “damper”
between the engine flywheel and the input shaft of the transmission. According
to the illustration in the parts book, it looks sort of like the spring loaded
pressure plate in a clutch arrangement. But it seems pretty unlikely that the
damper would have failed with only 200 hours on the engine. The Walter v drive
hasn’t got much space under it for the coupling, so Jim’s boat has a relatively
small diameter coupling with 3 bolts in it.  As Jim has said, this is the 3rd
time in two years that the bolts have sheared off. As he  has said, the
feathering prop has been rebuilt, the shaft checked for straightness, bolts
replaced (though there is a question whether the latest set is grade 5 or grade
8), engine aligned repeatedly(and BTW the motor mounts are new), etc., etc.,
etc. Jim (and everyone else aware of the problem) is getting really frustrated.

Re: Stus-List Coupling bolts shearing

2018-05-23 Thread Frank via CnC-List
Jim,

I have a 79 38LF, serial number 001. I have had a similar problem.
There were a combination of things that caused it.
First, the engine was never bedded in the boat properly. I had to cut the
engine mounts and rebuild them so the engine could be aligned with the prop
shaft.
Second, I had the Paragon SAOV transmission and V-drive rebuilt. Most of the
internal components of both units were replaced. The prior owner installed a
used SAOD and connected the v-drive to it. (Making it a SAOV)
But, most important, have you replaced the vibration damper connected to the
output shaft of the engine? It looks like a clutch plate but without the
clutch material. It is between the engine and the transmission.
Mine looked good but upon a thorough inspection it was found to be trash!
My problem turned out to be a combination of the above, several “boat yards”
aligned the prop with the v-drive but in actuality, there was a significant
amount of difference between the two causing the bolts on the coupling to
loosen.
There was enough play in the v-drive output for it to look good.

I would suspect that your vibration damper is not doing it’s job.

The boat in question is an 81 landfall 38.
The v-drive coupling bolts have sheared off 3 times and caused loss of power.
Have been very careful to pause when changing gears.
The westerbeak engine runs great throughout all this. The shaft removed and
checked after the second time. The 2 bladed max prop sent back and rebuilt.
New motor mounts installed by po when replacing engine. About 4 years ago (<200
hours on engine) coupling. Allignment done each time and found okay.
I am looking for advice, suggestions, similar situations and corrections. HELP

!Check your motor mounts!
They can be sheared through or very loose and look OK when not in gear. When
you go to shift, the engine shifts on the bad mount(s) and shears the bolts.

The v-drive has a coupler holding the shaft . The bolts on the coupler loosen
and then shear off. Fortunately only the bolts have been the only damageJi

Price was pretty good - $7-8/tube.  Worked well - but I'm only 12mo in.

Stus-List Decals

2018-05-23 Thread David via CnC-List
So I ordered the hull decals (stars etc.) for the hull for my 1981 40' from
HMP. For whatever reason they are the wrong size(s). To their credit HMP
will provide a half credit on my next order (they were custom produced).

I will custom cut gold tape for the stars.

Anybody interested in the decals?

Re: Stus-List Radar Reflector

2018-05-23 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
Speaking of the mysterious exploding radar reflector, I have a flimsy, old
Davis economy unit on board for emergency use. My guess is that it is not
very effective. I do not have a permanently mounted reflector (nor do I
need one where I sail), but every few years or so find myself in the middle
of the lake (near shipping lanes) in dense fog. This is when I hoist the
reflector. What do people recommend for this type of limited use?

A friend with a scientific background offered up an explanation of what
'might' have happened to my radar reflector.

He said "Did you ever put a plastic container that had a bit of metal
left behind from the safety seal on its top edge in the microwave oven
and hit 'Start'. A small piece of metal will make a big bang
accompanied by a flash of fire. Radar waves and microwaves can be in
the same gigahertz frequency range. Maybe your reflector got hit by
high power radar gigahertz waves from another vessel and exploded the
same as that small piece of metal in a microwave oven."

The most logical explanation I have heard ..and there was a large
commercial vessel leaving the harbor when it exploded.FYI

Re: Stus-List installing a Lewmar V series windlass on a LF38

2018-05-23 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
Hi, John — the typical way to do this is to mount the windlass on deck,
“straddling” the bulkhead between the chain locker and the v-berth, so that the
motor is out of the elements in the forward part of the v-berth and the chain
drop is in the very aft end of the anchor locker.

See Wal Bryant’s excellent page here:

Radar strong enough to do that could be quite dangerous to you too!
Your eyes go first, you'll end up with cataracts from your corneas being
cooked. The older magnetron radars used on boats commonly have eye-safe
distances of around 10-30 feet.

Brian,
Below is an excerpt from a discussion with my Yanmar parts dealer.  At the end
you can pickup the part numbers.
See the attached pictures for screen shots of the McMaster-Carr product pages.

Josh

I have an old Yanmar 3HM35F.  In the fuel system it uses one time use copper
crush washers.  Between leaking and constantly replacing these things are a
pain in the butt!  It looks like yanmar replaced them in later model engines
with seal washers (metal with captured rubber o-rings).  The engine in mind is
the 3YM30.
I have what I think are part equivalents.  I called yanmar parts customer
service to get some specs and their thoughts.  They obviously can't give a
certification/authorization to use parts which are not "made for my engine".
I'm not asking you to do that either.  What I would like is to find out if you
have the parts listed below and if you could pull them for me to personally
compare.  Obviously if you have any thoughts on the subject I'm glad to hear it.
Gasket 8 thick x1- copper = 104884-59170- seal wash = 22190-08
Gasket 8 x3- copper = 23414-08- seal wash = 22190-080002
Gasket 12 x6- copper = 23414- 12- seal wash = 22190-12

Josh, nice videos.  The priming bulb would be great to have to facilitate this
process.  May install one next time I change the fuel filters and am not under
time pressure to get the boat launched…   Am still on the hard over an hour’s
drive away with an early Thursday AM launch time.   Can the seal washers from
McMaster be tightened multiple times?  Unlike the Yanmar copper washers…   Do
you have specific seal washers at McMaster that work in the Yanmar fuel system?
Have replaced the 8 and 12 mm Yanmar washers when replacing the fuel filter
housing.  A “professional” mechanic had over tightened the supply banjo bolt
stripping the threads.   Found this suggestion on line and not sure if it makes
sense; not sure if this would force the air past / through the injectors leave
the system fully primed.  Do not want to cause more problems:   “If your fuel
system is now filled with air, I would try the following. Engage the
decompression levers, close the cooling water thru hull, pull the engine stop,
and then spin the engine using the starter. Hopefully that will pull fuel
through the system and return any air back to the tank. If you just try to
start the engine and air is the system, you will get air into the high pressure
injector lines and starting will be a problem.”   May just go the route Edd
suggested and do it manually…   Any other suggestions?  Thanks,Brian From:

Subject: Re: Stus-List Question about bleeding a Yanmar 3GM30F I have found
that the 3HM35F (almost the same engine) primes very easily.  I make more than
problems by opening the official bleed screws.  They will perpetually leak.  In
fact, I JB welded the screw on the engine filter and the HP pump in place.  I
have replaced the associated banjo fitting copper washers with seal washers.
Yanmar makes some which I can provide the part numbers for or you can use seal
washers from McMaster-Carr.  This was a huge upgrade that completely eliminated
fuel and air leaks. I have also installed a priming bulb in the fuel supply
line which helps prime the entire system including the racor.  When I prime the
system I prime the racor and then I only loosen the fuel banjo fitting into the
engine filter.  Once it is clear I loosen the banjo at the HP pump.  2 points
and that's it.  With copper washers you need to replace them but with seal
washers they are reusable. https://youtu.be/mdHIt14l0R8

I guess I'll keep an eye out for a Loos rod gauge.

We are launching and stepping the mast this week so I'll give it a good
inspection and review the condition of the mast step and take lots of
photos.

If you can share your values I'd appreciate it, and if I can't find a gauge
on eBay I'll break down and buy a new one.

We are in a small marina so I'm doubtful if I can find a rod based on at
any of the other boats.

Thanks,
