Re: Stus-List Long time sailing experience??

2018-10-01 Thread Leslie Paal via CnC-List
Looks like I'm in 'the same boat', stated sailing by racing on an old Olympic
class wooden boat at the same time. Came from soaring (sail plane) when I
moved to the sea shore. Here in the US I had a C&C25 from 78-92; did not
consider anything else than C&C when upgrading. Moved the 25 from Marblehead
MA to San Diego CA, there was no question as the west coast is thin in C&Cs.

Leslie.

 Interesting thread on
the longevity of both individual and
family C&C ownership.  Also interesting is the length
of sailing experience on the list.  52 years, etc.!
 Nice.
Gosh, I feel like a newbie having started in the
late 70's.  Hate to admit it but I'm a recovering
beach cat sailor.  Started my racing career on the fore
deck and still occasionally work the "pointy
end".  Just happy to be on the water these
 days.

Don Kern put together a great list of C&C owners which unfortunately I can no
longer find. In any event, we purchased SLY in December 1984 here in the
Seattle area. She is a 1975 C&C 33 but we are often asked about her
manufacture. She was somewhat disguised by the prior owner. She came red from
the factory but the PO had her Algriped Black. They removed the traditional C&C
cove strip and greatly increased her boot top width, which is white and
contains her name. Name is also on her transom. It is surprising how much this
changes her appearance. She is a great boat, sails well and has won many races
for us. Her older sails and sailors have kept us off the race course of late
but we still plan to cruise her locally to the San Juan and Gulf Islands. We
will see what next summer brings.

I bought Pradel,35 Mk 1 #173 January 1999. I specifically was
Poking for a 35 mk1 for her sailing ability as well as accomodations for my
wife and four children. We raced her very successfully for several years with
her old sails but as the kids moved on, now I've settled into full cruising
mode with roller furling, 2 dozen crab traps and an inflatable and outboard
carried onboard. Now I get my racing fix sailing an old Comet but spending most
of my time cruising the Chesapeake out of the Magothy River.

Yes, that is a sister ship. There was also one in Chicago (Fury) for sale a
couple years ago. An owner of one of the boats, Valadare (somewhere in New
England), reached out to me a while back. He had tracked down all of them,
which include his boat, my boat, Fury, and three Canadian boats: Genevieve,
Locomotion, and Avanti III (the one listed on Yachtworld). In addition, I
understand that the same vintage Baltic 42 (the first version, not the DP) had
the same hull. According to a Baltic ad (see below), the design was based on
the 1975 Canada’s Cup challenger Marauder.

Our boat is a "C&C 42 Custom." As it was explained to me, the word "Custom"

Re: Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

2018-10-01 Thread Robert Boyer via CnC-List
I routed the 2-inch exhaust hose to exit on the forward outboard section of the
cockpit coaming. This required that I use a shield to prevent green water from
splashing into the hose. I mounted the fan around the corner from the vent
location. I had to use a little more hose than was normally supplied and I had
to move up to a slightly larger fan because of the longer hose.

Keep in mind that you should completely clean it out before storing for the
winter—therefore 24/7 electricity is not required in the winter.

Have been contemplating replacement of my stench-impregnated holding tank

Very tempting for many reasons, plus a huge gain in interior space below
 the v-berth.
my only concern is size of the unit itself and I wonder if anyone has
already been down this road. Any thoughts or guidance?

Stus-List It's October already

2018-10-01 Thread Stu via CnC-List
Here it is the 1st day of October – where did the summer go? It wasn’t too
long ago that many people were getting ready to launch for the summer. Now
they are getting ready to haul-out.

Unfortunately, October is the beginning of the yearly bills coming in that are
associated with this list and the Photo Album and they keep increasing.

Your help in defraying some of my expenses by contributing to the cause is
greatly appreciated. As long as I can keep my head above water, the list will

Being retired, and having a rainy day I put together a spread sheet
(attached) from the replies to Jack's request. Please let me know by
email, if you want to be removed or want to make corrections to the
list. Rhis is a shorten list that does not include the second and third
boats that folks have owned.

I will send out an update as soon as the replies peter out.

Re: Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

2018-10-01 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
You might be surprised about winter solar performance. I'm in BC, and my
brother's place on the gulf islands just got a 4kW solar system installed,
with 900W of panels. The standby consumption of the inverter is about 10W
(not bad considering the 4kW output). But what I was most surprised was
that we were seeing 100W of power from the panels even during the days of
full cloud cover and heavy rain in early September. I would assume the
small 12V fan in a toilet will draw less than 1W, and if you have an
efficient solar inverter/charging system, it may not be a problem even in
the dark days of winter.
When we do find a boat, I'll definitely be investigating a composting
toilet, along with a solar system.

Been on vacation in our land yacht with spotty wifi so I haven’t chimed in.

Old boat: 1970 Redwing 35, Hull 7, purchased in 1996, scrapped in 2017
New boat: 1983 C&C 35-3, Hull 28, purchased in 2017

Planned on replacing the Redwing with another C&C. Couldn’t see ourselves in a
Catalina or a Hunter.
