Re: Stus-List C 37+ Polars

2018-11-04 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
This topic is about 2 years old. I finally got a chance to play with the
polars for the 37+.

I use an Android app called SailGrib WR. It downloads grib files and then
performs routing based on expected wind and boat performance. It requires
the boat's polar data to be provided in order to be accurate. Some popular
boats are already provided but the 37+ is not. I finally broke down and
figured it all out. Once I made a .pol file, I was able to add it to the
SailGrib folder and then have the app draw the polar graph. I took a
screenshot and then overlayed the polar from the owner's manual. It seems
like a pretty close match.

All the files and pictures are available here:

Stus-List digest ejection!?!

2018-11-04 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
Might be. I had that happen to me after a inadvertent “digest post” a week or
so ago.

After I posted I started getting a peach email. It took mere a while to find
the digest delivery button on the last web site. It had got turned off. I
turned it back on and it’s been all good since then.

Guess it does seem like an appropriate punishment... :D

I'll second the ATN mast climber. It works well enough once you get the hang

more of an upper body workout than it appears in the video.

Re: Stus-List Climbing the mast

2018-11-04 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
I was never a fan of either being hoisted or hoisting some up the mast. This is
really hard work for the person on the winch. I like the electric winch
hoisting even less, but YMMV.

I also believe that any “climbing” gear is much better than similar “sailing”
gear, so I would prefer a climbing harness with ascenders over the ATN mast
climbing solution. But I may be biased by personal experience.

Potentially, a climbing solution requires that one knows how to use it (it is a
“do it yourself” kit vs. a ready to use kit (like ATN)).

Btw. On my old 24 the mast was like a tree trunk. I would not attempt to step
it or unstep it with 3 people (I am not that strong); I’d rather climb it. But
again, YMMV.

I think a lot depends on a salt water or fresh water environment.  We
are in fresh water.  I cleaned and lubed my primaries (Barlow 26) on
Corsair (1970 Redwing 35) after about 30 years of service.  The aft
winches were a little dry, the forwards were just fine.  Our new boat
will get winches done this spring (Barient 18, 22 and 27), .  One of the
cabin top winches is toast, the rest seem to be servicable.

greasing). My winches are Lewmar.

I don’t believe that the winches run in such a demanding environment.

I am not saying that we should not do the maintenance, but I think
that we have a few systems on our boats that require more love and
care more regularly.

Did anyone notice any deterioration in performance or grease condition

used Harken white winch grease and Harken winch pawl oil. Still worin
smooth and sounding good. Maybe i am just lucky all Barient winches

At low speed and medium pressure calcium sulphonate is a good choice.

I contacted Shell and one of their product specialists called me

looking
at the Shell SRS 2000 line ( now renamed Gadus I think ). I got
the Extreme

After two years the grease is holding up better than anything I
have previously
tried, which includes the Lewmar/Harken greases. Previously I
would rebuild the
primary winches every year and have a mid season tear down to
check and maybe
add some grease. I took the winches apart after a season and it
looked good, better
than they usually would look mid season.

There is information on the web if you are interested. Note it is
a specific version.

the given the "best choice" star.
Using Lewmar as the reference for all of the other "budget" greases.  Green
Grease was found to be better in both wash of corrosion protection and static
corrosion protection.  It was given the "best choice" star (shared only with
Lewmar) AND the "budget buy" dollar sign (shared with no one else).  Green
grease was clearly the best value.  $0.64/oz.

Too late for those who already did it, but a good tip is to use an old shoe box
with a hole through which the witch can go. This way any small parts (e.g.

2018-11-04 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
I am with Dwight on this. Maybe 15 years is a bit of a stretch, but I did my
winches last spring and I bet this was their first time in 24 years, maybe
second. They still were working fine (before cleaning and greasing). My winches
are Lewmar.

I don’t believe that the winches run in such a demanding environment.

I am not saying that we should not do the maintenance, but I think that we have
a few systems on our boats that require more love and care more regularly.

Did anyone notice any deterioration in performance or grease condition after
6-12 months of use?

Re: Stus-List Climbing the mast

2018-11-04 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List

Two or three climbing ascenders, climbing harness.

If you have someone to help you (belay), two is enough. If you try doing it
solo you need the third.

Make sure that your halyards are in good shape. This step is CRITICAL.

Climb on one halyard; preferably, tied very tight to the bottom of the mast.
Pre-stretch it as much as you can (winch). Have the helper belay you (keep the
line almost tight) on another halyard. If you do it solo, use the 3rd ascender
to secure you to the second halyard.

Take a few loops of some good webbing or even some line with you. You want to
be able to secure yourself to the top of the mast. Also, you can use a loop to
make “stirrups” for your feet, for when you work at the top.

I would not recommend doing it alone.

Never use a single or unknown line to climb the mast!!!

Btw. The weight limitation is only for you (not the mast). If you can do it,
the mast would take it.

Make sure that you have ALL tools you might need up there.

Take a length of cord (30’) to use to get you any tool you forgot or dropped.

Make sure that you don't drop anything (short cords attached to each tool)

Good luck

Re: Stus-List Winch grease

2018-11-04 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List

A calcium based greases are among the more water resistant offerings.
At low speed and medium pressure calcium sulphonate is a good choice.

I contacted Shell and one of their product specialists called me back. After
a discussion of the properties of marine winches she recommended looking
at the Shell SRS 2000 line ( now renamed Gadus I think ). I got the Extreme
version which is calcium suphonate based, $12 for a standard sized grease
gun tube. I would expect it to be a lifetime supply.

After two years the grease is holding up better than anything I have previously
tried, which includes the Lewmar/Harken greases. Previously I would rebuild the
primary winches every year and have a mid season tear down to check and maybe
add some grease. I took the winches apart after a season and it looked good,
better
than they usually would look mid season.

There is information on the web if you are interested. Note it is a specific
version.

I found an old PS edition from when I still had my subscription. I'll try
to get it digitized and uploaded soon. In the mean time hear are the
standout results.

13 greases tested.

Between the official winch greases, Andersen, Harken, and Lewmar. Lewmar
was the given the "best choice" star.

Using Lewmar as the reference for all of the other "budget" greases. Green
Grease was found to be better in both wash of corrosion protection and
static corrosion protection. It was given the "best choice" star (shared
only with Lewmar) AND the "budget buy" dollar sign (shared with no one
else). Green grease was clearly the best value. $0.64/oz.

Brakekleen is awesome. As I understand it the non-chlorinated version is
to ensure that the chemicals don't destroy the plastic and rubber

Re: Stus-List Winch grease

2018-11-04 Thread schiller via CnC-List
It might be a good time to remind what grease is.  It is a lubricating
oil, a thickener and additives.  The oils will be petroleum based or
synthetic.  The thickeners range from soaps (aluminum, lithium or
calcium based), clay (think kitty litter), or polyureas.  The additives
are for rust/oxidation, extreme pressure, friction/lubricity, etc.

The most common grease we used in precision guided weapons was synthetic
oil based with clay thickeners (Mobil 28, Aeroshell 22, MIL-PRF-81322).
This grease had a storage life of 10 years before the oil would migrate
out and leave the clay sludge.  For 30 year storage life requirements,
we used perfluourinated greases (Braycote 601EF).

It appears that the Lewmar Winch grease is a calcium soap based
synthetic.  I have used several tubes of it through the years and it is
good grease.  $60/pound for Lewmar vs. $3,200/lb for Braycote makes the
decision on winches an easier decision.

The best advice is to make sure your winches get used to keep the oil
mixed in.

FYI, I posted earlier, even though I worked for the parent company that
made Fram filters, I wouldn't buy them. However, just for clarity, like
many filter manufacturers, Fram makes a couple lines of filters. The
standard line, which is found in many big box stores, isn't highly rated.

Fram's premium lines, have more respect. Their Extra Guard line is well
regarded by some.

This is true of most filter lines.

Oh... that sounds good. The Pawlls are rusted so I need to replace all 8
anyway. May buy the kit and use the cheaper stuff for yearly servicing. Took me
almost 4 hours per winch to get the sticky hard varnish that had developed!!
What a mess. They look and feel brand new now!

Good to have on the boat. This is what Peggie Hall recommends for lubricating

Ditto – I use 10-30W oil sparingly on pawls. I find the grease only
occasionally needs more added each year

I use the Lewmar grease. Use it sparingly. I do all winches (ten) on my boat
every year, and a tube of Lewmar grease lasts me for years.
