Doug - what is the name/type of grease?

Have been fairly cavalier about greasing my Gori and probably should be more
caring.

Thanks.

Stus-List Rigging information.

2019-09-25 Thread HV via CnC-List

Hi all,

Recently purchased a 1979 C 30 MK1, I have sent a payment to get the
owners manual but I am unsure if it has rigging information.

So I am wondering if anyone would be willing to share some images of how
their Cunningham/Downhaul may be rigged...

Additionally, for some reason the waste tank behind the bulkhead in the
head has been abandoned, does anyone have any information on how this
was setup?

I am really liking this boat (I have owned many), she is in very good
condition and just needs some TLC, oh I am also interested in adding a
bow anchor roller, has anyone done this to their 30Mk1?

Does anyone know how many blocks should be used as mast spacers and
their placement? mine only has 5 and are installed randomly...

Lastly, how do I know the hull # for placing on my new Mainsail?

Thank in advance for any help, pictures and advice...

Stus-List Max prop

2019-09-25 Thread Rick Rohwer via CnC-List
We went from 3 blade fixed to 3 blade max prop a couple of years ago. Huge
difference sailing as expected and I think it backs and fills better than with
the fixed prop. I am considering pitching it slightly heavier on the next haul
out this winter based on info on this fantastic forum.

Thanks all for the great info

Re: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

2019-09-25 Thread Doug Robinson via CnC-List

Yo "J Prop'rs"

We are currently running the two blade plastic prop on our CnC 29 as the
JProp is on the bench for disassembly and cleaning.  You must use the
requisite grease in the JProp or it gets all gummed up and won't feather
easily.  It also on occasion reverses settings and forward becomes
reverse and visa versaI don't know why but our rigger fixes it.  It
replaced the Martec which is supposed to be  welded and refaced on
occasion, which no one informed us and as a result our welder suggested
we retire it and use it for a trophy of some kind.  We bought the J Prop
as it was the only device that fits the C 29MkI and performance in
reverse was considerably improved, our prop is offset.  Ken, notes that
is adjustable and we carefully monitored what other 29 owners were
trying, those that had Atomic 4's and followed their lead, saving
considerable time and effort.  We all ended up using the offset of 5 for
the Atom4.  We should note that distribution of this product has fallen
to US Beta Marine distributor with the unfortunate demise of the dealer
in Quebec, (it's an Italian product).  We are keen to get it back in
operation as the plastic prop is designed for and is outstanding on the
A4, but the Cornell engineer that design it has passed away and nobody
was smart enough to pick it up and continue sales.  Hit something and
you can't replace it.

The grease for the JProp is made in Canada by Shell for the maritime
fisheries trade.  Unique

Stus-List Folding and feathering prop recommendations.

2019-09-25 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
Bruce, our last two boats came with a two bladed Max prop. They are adjustable
and give plenty of power in reverse, stops on a dime coming into the slip and
pulls slightly to port. We have no issues reaching hull speed either. The 1981
36KCB was Atomic 4 powered and the 1989 37+ is a Universal M35. I’ve had zero
issues with either prop. We are in sweet water if that is a factor but I don’t
think so. (There are no crab pots here, just a few gill nets marked with
floats.) Very happy with the Max prop but I don’t have any other prop
experience and hope I never do. 21 years with the Max. I use the appropriate
grease on haul out to push any water out from inside the prop.

One thing I should mention is that it gives me the ability to back the boat
into a slip or dock with as much control and confidence as I back up my truck
and imho that’s a pretty good indicator of a decent prop everything else being
equal.

Re: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

2019-09-25 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Gori even advertised that when folded the blades present less area to
tangle. Of course if you are motoring then you will probably not survive
with ANY prop.

I have tangled with one line in my time and it was a trout line used for
crabbing. The red floating gas can was the only indicator of anything in
the water. I kinda assumed that whatever might be being marked would be
directly below much like a crab pot. I gave it about half a boat length of
space. Once I was close enough to realize that a waterman was using it for
a float I could then also see the trout line extending at a shallow
diagonal. I immediately cut the engine and shifted to neutral but still
not sure if I had cleared the line with my keel. I watched the can to make
a wake as we drifted past. As the can had just cleared a line
perpendicular to my transom it began making a wake. I deployed the swim
platform and got down low to the water to see what could be seen. The line
was actually fouled on the little post in front of the rudder. The
waterman had used a bosuns clip to attach the line to the can so a boat
hook and some gymnastics and I was able to unhook the clip, re-route the
line, and re-attach it to the can. Unfortunately this was not before the
waterman saw from 1/4 mile away what had happened. He proceeded over to us
and began raising all types of hell. I apologized and even showed that I
had reset his line before dropping it in the water.

Long story short, the approach angle of the deep keel protected the prop
and shaft from catching on the line.

Re: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

2019-09-25 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Hi Neil

Persistence has Flexofold 2 blade on Yanmar 3GM30F and it works very well.
Have run up to 3100RPM but normally stay at 2800 RPM since WOT is 2800 which is
the 80% number. Is almost no difference in speed over 3000 RPM. Works well,
decent reverse and far better than the Martec it replaced.

Customer service for me was simple. Sent an email (or contact on website –
cannot recall), got a response with quote and suggestion the next day,. When
ordered it arrived in 3 days. Installation no problem.

Not sure if centrifical force or not but always assumed it was. No issues at
all on opening fwd or reverse.

Very Happy

Hello all,

I know this has been discussed a lot on the board in the past, but given the
recent discussions of over-propping on the part of flex-o-fold, I'd like to
re-ask the question. The reason is that a folding prop is definitely in my
future, as we have a fixed 3 blade prop on the boat now. We also sail in an
area where crab pots are extremely common from October through April. For that
reason alone I am leaning toward a folding prop. I also saw the rather well
put together article in which a test of folding and feather props was performed
- the one touted on flex-o-fold's website.

By the way, in exchanging emails with flex-o-fold, they are recommending a 3
blade version, so if vibration is an issue with your two blade prop, that may
not apply to me.

With all these considerations in mind, when it comes to a folding/feathering

Bruce,

I have a 16" 3 blade max-prop tied to my Yanmar 3HM35F (~35HP max
output@3600rpm), C 37+. I have no experience with anything else but can
say that the service, support, design and operation of this product and
company are very satisfying. Mine is the original model which is extremely
challenging to adjust in the water but could technically be done. I HAVE
disassembled, cleaned, and adjusted mine multiple times on dry land. My
engine had slightly lost timing advance causing a reduction in power, over
the years I tweaked the prop to account for the reduction. When I fixed
the issue with the engine I now found that I was under pitched and was able
to easily adjust back. Adjustability is an awesome flexibility. Reverse
seems just as powerful as forward and prop walk to port is apparent but not
problematic... In fact I have learned to use it for docking and prefer
docking on port

I believe that Dwight has recommended the AutoProp in the past. It sounds
like maybe it auto pitches itself based on RPM/load? I would definitely
consider an AutoProp or Ken Heaton's J-prop in the future if I was looking
for an alternativeof course I would throw an updated version of the
Max-prop into the considerations as well.

Thankfully, I have not gotten tangled in a crab pot line as of yet.  I was just
thinking that if the blades are folded, there would be a greater probability of
the line sliding off the prop shaft rather than getting caught around a blade
like "might" happen with a J Prop.  That said, it would then probably get
caught around the rudder, but it's a lot more robust.  Maybe I'm just
overworrying things.BruceSent from Samsung tablet.

Note that the "J Prop" is pitch adjustable while installed on the boat so it

Re: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

2019-09-25 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
I believe I reported recently that I went from a Martec two blade to a Flex o
Fold two blade. My Westerbeke diesel engine likes to run at about 2000 RPM.
The performance of the props is comparable, although the Flex o Fold seems to
provide more power in reverse. Overall, I am happy with the Flex o Fold for
three reasons: 1) because it folds all blades at once (smoothly, I might add),
I never have a blade hanging down and don’t need to worry about aligning the
shaft for racing; 2) the new prop does not do the half-open crazy vibration
thing that is common with old Martecs; and 3) it was relatively easy to install
(meaning that I could do it).

Hope this helps.

2019-09-25 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Hi Bruce,

Our boat was built with a Universal diesel but was re-powered in 2001 by a
previous Quebec City owner. He wanted more horse power to fight the St.
Lawrence River currents and tides so we now have a Yanmar 3JH2-TBE diesel.
This is a 47 hp. Turbo with a 3 blade feathering "J Prop", prop made in
Italy. Nice combination. Lots of go, plenty of reverse. We're at about
1100 hrs. on this combination, 400 we put on ourselves over the last 10
years.

I'd buy another J Prop if I needed one.

Re: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

2019-09-25 Thread George Cone via CnC-List
I have a flex fold on my 40, they might have over propped me also . I can only
go to 3000 rpm, but it is a two blade, no vibration. I'm happy with it.

Subject: Stus-List Folding & Feathering Prop Recommendations

With all these considerations in mind, when it comes to a folding/feathering
prop, what do you have, and why do you like it?

Looking forward to your insights,

Re: Stus-List Boom Bail for 30-2

Thanks, Mike!

I am definitely keeping this as an option, but Holland Marine claims to have
the exact replacement part, which is now on the way to me. I'm planning to try
that first and will go the strop direction if that doesn't pan out. Thanks all
for the feedback.

I made a strop with AMSTEEL. I spliced eyes in each end. It goes around the
mast three times. It stays in place without anything holding it there.

   Hi all,

We were headed out for the last race of the season Saturday and as we loaded up
the main for the first time, the fitting on the boom that attaches to the main

to the inside of the boom. I suspect this probably just weakened over time and
happened to give out at the weld. It was quite windy, but at that point the
stresses on the mainsheet weren't out of the ordinary since we were just
motoring out of the harbor. No other damage to the boat and no harm to the
crew as a result of this, so it could have been much worse.

Now the issue is how to find a replacement. Anyone have an idea if these are
available off the shelf or have another idea for replacement? RigRite does not
recognize it. I have also contacted Offshore Spars, who I believe made the rig
originally and helped me out with a boom vang bracket last year. RigRite has
one that is similar size but with a different hole pattern that I probably
could make work, but still hoping for a true replacement if I can get one.
Thanks for your help!

Re: Stus-List Flooded Batteries

2019-09-25 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
Another battery thought: As I get older, my enthusiasm for lifting up 4D and 8D
batteries has declined a LOT. The golf cart form factor, GC2 I think, in wet,
gel, or AGM gives you two batteries around 60-70 pounds instead of one 120-140
pound battery. An 8D battery box will hold 3 group 24 batteries that will be a
lot easier to move around with the weight split into thirds. Trucks are getting
into using batteries instead of running the engines while parked and they
usually make their house bank out of several group 31 batteries. Those are not
too hard to handle and the mass production allows one to find relatively cheap
AGMs in that size.
If you ever go for a really big bank you can get some batteries in individual 2
volt cells that you assemble onsite.
