Tom, could be crud in the tank blocking the pick up line to the filter.
Should be rubber line from tank to filter.
Disconnect line at filter and blow into it. Yumm!

Stus-List Re: Intermittent stalling

2021-08-03 Thread ALAN BERGEN via CnC-List
My previous boat hadan A4 engine. There was a filter at the end of the
pickup tube that was clogged, and it caused the engine to stall because the
pump was starved for fuel. You may not have a filter there, but you might
have sludge in the bottom of your tank causing the pickup tube to clog. I
go many years without changing my fuel filters, and when I do, they are
pretty clean. If yours are dirty when you change them, you might want to
polish your fuel.

Stus-List Intermittent stalling

2021-08-03 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List
We are off on a two week cruise. Second day running the engine starts to
falter, then stall. I check the Racor, no water. I did replace the fuel pump
last year after we ran out of fuel w the fuel tank half full. But it seemed to
be fine.

She started and we stopped in a Edmonds to top off the tank, but it only took 7
g.

She then ran pretty solid for the next 2 hours with only a few issues.

I have not changed the fuel filters for about 150 hours over two years.

I am thinking that either the filters need replacing or the fuel pump just does
not lift the fuel enough.

Any help is appreciated.

2021-08-03 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
According to a memorable article in the Wall Street Journal about Apple, the
landed cost in the US of the average IPhone sold was $43. (One of the money
saving features of the factory in China is that part of the shipping warehouse
is actually Irish territory (the Chinese government ceded it to Ireland). So
any shipment from that part of the factory gets into the US duty free as part
of a trade deal with Ireland.)

If your IPhone 12 cost $43, think of how cheap it is to build a FRS radio.

I rarely involve The Admiral in anchoring, but when I do I just use hand
signals. Radios seem overkill for this.

By the way, the endless variety of Baofeng (sp?) radios available for cheap are
not legal for this use. Not that this stops anyone, but they aren’t. They are
legally usable as ham radios only if you have a ham license. They come with a
weird random set of frequencies from China that are kind of scattered around
and not remotely legal in the USA or Canada.

If you buy these things, at least program them for FRS/GMRS/MURS frequencies.
The radios are not type accepted for that, but at least they’ll be on legal
frequencies 

Possibly a garboard drain from the bilge, but I would search out what is
causing the "rusty" water. Something corroding inside the boat?

Stus-List Re: C smile and rust

2021-08-03 Thread Matthew via CnC-List
I can’t tell from the picture what that is. If it was coming from the bilge
(like diesel fuel), I would expect it on both sides. I suggest asking the
owner directly.

As for the smile, C did not do a great job mating the lead keel to the
fortified fiberglass keel stub (or trunk). Some owners on this list have fixed
the problem on their boats. My sense is that most just tolerate it. A related
issue on my boat (not sure about the 30 Mark I) is that the leading edge of the
keel where it meets the hull, which is forward of where the lead is bolted on,
is surprisingly “non-structural.” The weight of the keel is borne by the
bolts, which should be tight to the stub/trunk. However, on my boat, and I
suspect there are many, the keel is glassed to the hull forward of the strong
stub/trunk area. As a result, it is non uncommon to see some cracking where
the leading edge of the keel meets the hull. I spoke with a naval architect
who interned at C in the 70’s, and he explained that this area does not
support the weight of the keel, and C was not concerned about fortifying it.
He told me not to worry about the cracking, although I constantly keep an eye
on it. I noticed that my friend’s 41 has the same issue.

Hi Adam,

We draw 8' 2" so you won't have any trouble at any anchorage we use. Some
of our favorites in the Bras d'Or are (Click on the names for charlets):

Maskells Harbour
Johnstown Harbour

Ross Pond
Clarke Cove (Marble Mountain)
 Actually
MacDonalds Cove behind the marble sand bar at the north of the linked
chartlet.
Blues Cove (Orangedale)
 We tie to the
wharf here. check out the Museum at the old Train Station..
Little Harbour

McPhee Islands
Washabuck River & MacIvers Cove
 We go way up to
Campbells Cove and tuck in just to the north of red buoy AC12
Long Island We
anchor behind the small sand bar.
Island Point Harbour
 we go right
to the head of the harbour, almost to the sand beach.
Otter Harbour

I don't know how much time you have. You could also pop out the Great Bras
d'or and go up to:
Ingonish Harbour
 We tuck
into Dunphys cove.
Neils Harbour

That will get you started.

And there is no charge to pass through the locks, neither at the Canso
Straight or at St. Peters Canal. And there are always a few staff at Canso
to help you through, 24 hrs a day, and staff to help at St. Peters during
opening hours, 7 days a week.

I believe there is only 1 lock at St. Peter's (double gate, but one lock), and
a swing bridge.
There is another bridge at Iona to make it up through the narrows if you want
to enter/exit

I believe there is only 1 lock at St. Peter's (double gate, but one
lock), and a swing bridge.
There is another bridge at Iona to make it up through the narrows if you
want to enter/exit from

the North.

We are currently on a two week tour of the Bras D'or lakes in Nova
Scotia sitting in an isolated anchorage enjoying cocktails in the
cockpit.

For those of you that cruise the lakes are probably one of the
best cruising areas in North America.(well I am biased)

We had a wicked sail yesterday hitting 9.8 as we surfed down a wave.
