I'm so accustom to the Blackstone report (for 13 years) that it works for

comments section, universal averages (which I know will not be as useful
being marine averages will not have the sampling numbers, perhaps), and
they show a running history of the numbers to track trends.

Stus-List Coolant in Diesels, Nitrites

2018-10-17 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
It is absolutely critical for me to add a nitrite additive SCA to my
International 7.3 in the Ford F250. It prevents microscopic cavitation
erosion that EATS holes in the water jacket over time without SCA. Only
Yanmar can tell you if it is needed. Maybe it's the V-8 in my engine, or
other design characteristics that require it. SCA is required in certain
other diesel engines. The erosion occurs over time so even if it's
required, one has time to track down the definitive word on the Yanmar
engine, and how much if any per gallon.

Re: Stus-List 1982 C 25

2018-09-19 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
Our 25-2 ('81) was in good shape when we bought her in February 2017. I
never thought once in pulling the OMC for an outboard, the transom is just
too nice and it pushes us easily to 6kts, though I rarely exceed 3.5kts. A
decision made more firm with the purchase of a spare OMC. I priced an
electric drive and then *quickly *eliminated that possibility .

Look below the companionway where the traveler is fixed. The boat is cored
there as another point of close inspection. It's tough to examine because
of the cabin liner hides the sandwich construction. I pulled every
fastener and resealed it once I found out the cockpit seat was cored when
installing a Raymarine ST2000 tiller pilot. Check every inside fastener
and backing plate for telltale color that could indicate seepage. This
goes for the cleat backing plate ahead of the anchor locker. It should be
dry without discoloration. Naturally pull up the cabin sole and inspect
the keel bolts (I thought wheel bolts on my huge International tractor were
large!).

Any discoloration is a concern until eliminated by testing.

Check Yahoo groups for the OMC Saildrive list, subscribe and check for
comments before radically changing the propulsion system. Someone there
will want to buy your OMC if you go for replacement. I would almost go for
a diminutive high output trolling motor before I would install an outboard,
suitable for an inland lake, no cruising.

I regularly single hand with ease as everything runs to the cockpit, even
the downhaul and emergency release for the asym tacker by ATN (with sock).

Re: Stus-List Oil drops in coolant

2018-08-03 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
I use a service of oil condition analysis in my International 7.3 diesel.
Before trying anything, send in a sample and see what the 'brownish orange'
is.
https://www.blackstone-labs.com/marine.php
Fleet managers use oil analysis to determine the length of time between
services and to troubleshoot. They can tell you how the engine is wearing
too; bearings, rings, etc. Check the dipstick for coolant.

Incidentally, for big boat purchases, an oil analysis is a great idea prior
to offers.

Do you have the expertise to pull the head, replace the head gasket, then
torque to specs and then adjust the valve clearances?

make a practice of installing a smaller battery in a watertight but
ventilated compartment to operate a secondary pump with clog proof

Re: Stus-List C clothing

2018-07-10 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
CnC'ers,
I found a locally available asymmetrical spinnaker for sale and need your
advise on fitment.
The first number is Sailrite specs, the second number is the actual sail.
Luff 32, 30
Leech 30, 24.5
Foot 18.25, 17.5

Do you see an acceptable fit for my boat?

It's brand new, grade 1. My thought was the foot and luff were most
critical.

Re: Stus-List CnC-List, C 25 II Mast step concerns

2018-06-21 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
We have the same boat, same year. The structural board replaces the rotted
core and extends beyond the rotted core to good core with and end-to-end
splice (equal bevels). I use west systems epoxy. Contour above with an
epoxy layups of fiberglass to get the shape of the deck that existed
before. As mentioned earlier, save the fiberglass laminate cut away
section for ease of refinishing.

The stainless steel tabs (an angle bracket), hidden above the headliner,
provide a direct connection from the Coosa board to the bulkhead. That way
the board doesn't rely on the teak cabin arch to support the mast step, but
instead extends a little way over the bulkhead. The length of the angle
brackets will be trial and error because I don't know how far the bulkhead
extends above the headliner piece.

And something else the new board will do is allow you to use the mast step
bracket screws (4) to bite into the new board with assurance. No crushing
of the core from tightening of the fasteners.

All of this work would replicate a factory look meaning no repairs
apparent if your saw doesn't go too far!

I have not done a peel but I do know the design (25-2) at the step and arch
support below. A coosa board product spanning the arch space in the cabin
would add much greater strength than factory. Also fastened into the
bulkheads hidden between the headliner and mast step with 316 SS stock.
The forces would always be transferred to the arched bulkead.

Stus-List Lightning Damage was Keel treatment

2018-05-04 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
This has intrigued me since I inspected the keel boats the very first time
on Tapestry. The bonding to the keel boats was made with two insulated
copper cables (looks to be 2 or 3 AWG). Poking around I found this
interesting presentation case study and product solutions.

http://www.marinelightning.com/Information/GroundingGuide.htm

Notice the many locations where damage to the hull causes holes at the
water line and other exit points for current. Even a tiny hole would sink
a boat. I think upgrading my bilge pump is in order.

I found certain retailers of the Honda 2000 will sell you one converted to
run on propane from gasoline. Like the propane dinghy outboards (Lehr), NO
gum in the fuel system. There is a cost from lower BTU in propane than
gasoline, but if you already use propane for the Magma, you have the fuel
(hopefully in the right spot).

Re: Stus-List Keel bolt torque

Correct, clean and dry threads. Galling of the threads affects the values
as well.
An example, extremely critical torque values (also clean and dry) extend to
engine head bolts and if studs and nuts are used.
Lube of any kind could cause values to change either a little or a lot.

Re: Stus-List 3GMD engine blow back

2017-09-27 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
Sounds like rings to crankcase blow by to me. Does this engine have a
breather on the side of the crankcase? My IHC Cub engine, essentially an
Atomic 4, has this breather that before my restoration, would emit blow by
gasses. There is no other source of pressure to emit oil or gas. You
could run a compression test once again.

You may find broken ring bits in your oil pan.

The MIT bluewater wiki was created and is maintained by MIT volunteers. I
updated a lot of stuff last year, but have not touched it since last
December. I have not seen XD this year. I don't know how much has changed
on the boat and what was reflected on the wiki.

More importantly, if people look at the wiki for reference, the following
items will not be included with the boat:

 Handheld VHF radio
 Lifejackets and harnesses
 Dinghy
 MOB light and mount
 Storm jib
 Tools
Ship's supplies (nuts, bolts, wire, tape, etc.)
 Jacklines
 Buckets
One of the floating winch handles (one will stay on the boat)
 Foul weather gear
 AIS and splitter
 Radar reflector
 Laptop/iPads
 Chart plotting tools
 Canadian charts
 Garmin GPS

Also, several people from the list have looked at the survey already. It
seems XD is in worse shape than I'd thought. I am no expert on boat
repairs -- I have never dealt with wet balsa core or anything like that. I
am on this list because I am learning a lot from members with vastly more
experience than I have. I very much appreciate people emailing me back
 with comments.

Maybe someone on the list will acquire XD and we'll read more about it, or
aybe someone else will acquire her, or
maybe the boat will go to the cutter. Speaking of which ...

How does one cut up a boat? Seriously, what do you do with a 43-foot boat,
if you want to destroy it?

I have started calling XD "it", not "she". I guess that's a goodbye.

Re: Stus-List Irma is one scary storm!

2017-09-05 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
I was surprised to see all the sailboats that had furled sails in marinas
between Port Aransas and Galveston, post Harvey. They had mostly been
unfurled by the winds, destroyed or demasted. A few boats were sunk but
still in their slips which I can only attribute it to debris blocking the
cockpit drains, then overflow going past the companionway boards. A storm
surge rise of 8' would raise any tied lines over the end of the pilings.
Other post storm images were of other boats that had crashed into what
appeared to be properly tied boats. None of the boats on stands had
remained in place in the force 12 zone.

We are inland by 300 nm, but I could have easily hauled out Tapestry on the
trailer, then attach the straps I use to haul tons of hay to helical pier
anchors. Of course we would have to be away from other nearby boats and
masts. The domino effect affected hauled boats.

Our 25MKII (1981) bought in February, transported from WI, has been
fantastic. The decks are good, chain plates dry, and every point I rebed
was dry. The OMC saildrive will push us over 7kts and surprised me with
how quiet relative to the diesels I've heard. I bought a spare OMC
Saildrive just in case or when it needs an overhaul, it will be a day
swapping out the motor. The wineglass stern has a design aesthetic that
will never have an outboard hanging off of it, for as long as we own it.
Source your parts now so when needed, you will be ready. I will share my
sources when needed.

Our rigger will install a Schaefer roller furler this weekend for all line
controls to run to the cockpit. If you buy her and need precise
dimensions, you can write to me.

The head is semi enclosed between the v berth and cabin. One of my tasks
is to find fabric and YKK zippers to provide privacy between the head and
cabin/cockpit.

Re: Stus-List Emission controls, Biodiesel

2017-08-18 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
Running biodiesel will further reduce engine noise along with the common
rail fuel delivery in newer diesel engines. Is it even available at fuel
docks, I haven't noticed. Biodiesel (B-20) is hard to find for my Ford
F250. I would imagine even less common on the water.

I read a little on the new Yanmar engine from an online reviewer that
pointed out the engine was not to be run at extended time at low rpm's.
This is also something to avoid on other diesel engines because a condition
named wet stacking.

Stus-List Derelict C 24 MKII

2017-08-07 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
I have had my eyes on a derelict 24 on our dock for months now. My
inquiries led the management to look into the status of the boat and
owners, if any. Turns out it belongs to the marina and they are willing to
take offers on it and 'don't worry about insulting offers', which I
interpret it to mean, we would like it to go. My offer is leaning to pay
for the mast step and haul out to my 25 MKII trailer where I can transport
it for long term renovation.

The staff pumped out 18" of water on the cabin sole to provide some
inspection opportunity. The most obvious problem is a drip from the blocks
that lead aft to the cockpit. I'm concerned this region contains plywood
sandwich construction. Even if it is only foam in the construction, and it
is saturated, will it be possible to dry out without removing the
fiberglass/gelcoat cabin top. Both instances are rough with the former
being very serious.

She has been in the water for many years, so it occurs to me she will have
a blistering hull. I would be in no hurry to get her renovated. No sails,
running rigging shot, even water dripping from the chain plates inside the
cabin. Gosh, I'm about to talk myself out of this!

Re: Stus-List Yanmar 3gm oil leak

2017-07-05 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
The only time I've known this to happen on internal combustion engines was
when the combustion gas pressures passed the compression rings and passed
the oil control ring to cause crankcase pressures to force out oil spray.
Oil spray within the crankcase is normal, it is when the negative pressure
outside forces it out of filler. Now might be a good time to run a
compression test on the cylinders for the heck of it.

Re: Stus-List Opinions on hull/keel crack expansion

Expansion will occur when moisture and ferrous metals react through
rusting. Do the 29's of these years have a cast iron core? If so, the
moisture will cause the iron to corrode and be very serious. An example of
this is when concrete reinforced slabs develop cracks sufficient to allow
water to penetrate to the rebar. Over time, the slab will fail as an
integral unit.

Re: Stus-List Man Crosses Atlantic on a Paddle Board

2017-03-10 Thread Bill Dakin via CnC-List
Made me think of Eddie Aikau. 'Would Eddie Go...?" Maybe not across
the Atlantic even for him.

Back on topic.. I'm close to wrapping up a minor new-owner update and
cleaning of our recently purchased 25MKII. All that is left is an Interlux
sprayed on bootstripe, buff and wax of the smooth area of the topsides,
running rig install, clean all the sails, lube the Edson steerage, and
splash her. Hopefully the saildrive, #1 doesn't leak, #2 it runs, and #3
runs well.

One of our headsails is a storm jib, a tiny little thing for sure. Another
can be reefed, the others are 115 and 150. And two mains.

Finally, in a marina of hundreds of sailboats, there is only one other C,
then ours in two weeks. They are very rare here in Texas.
