Re: Stus-List inexpensive chartplotter

2018-10-22 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List

Fred,
Just wondered if I am correct that Raymarine Axiom 9, which I have with
Navionics+, still does not have a night mode similar to Garmin? When I
discovered that, I contacted their support guy (Charles, Chuck) and he
indicated they did not have a night mode. He started a ticket on that
request to determine if one could be added. What in the world were they
thinking.

Secondly, I could swap out Navionics+ for the Raymarine charts, but
wonder what you think of both? I will be traveling up into Canadian
waters (Lake Huron, Georgian Bay) this summer and wonder if there is a
difference in what one sees on the charts?

Thank you,

Chris — once you’ve decided on a make/model but before you purchase,
please email me — as you’re new to the list, you probably aren’t aware
of this, but I used to design and install marine electronics and
electrical systems for a living. I’ve kept my vendor relationships
active, and offer discount pricing (pretty much dealer cost) to people
on the C list as a courtesy. I can get most manufacturers’ gear (not
B…) at good pricing; for instance, your cost on the lowest-end
Raymarine Axiom 7” plotter with Navionics+ US/Canada charts would be
$780.00 plus shipping (list $899.99). Email me off-list.

Re: Stus-List Docking Seamanship

2018-08-06 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List
No one seems to mention that on some C's the stanchions protrude
enough so that they will catch as you come in or out of a slip that has
pilings or boards on the finger pier. Unless someone is on the boat to
assist in keeping that from happening, one is likely to destroy a
stanchion. I have a couple of times over the many years I have owned my
C 36. It is a problem. Just thought I would mention that.

A variation on the spring line is to run a long line attached at the
toe rail next to the sidestay, outside the lifeline, with bitter
end/tail running back into the cockpit. Tail remains loose in the
cockpit for the approach. Stay at wheel and throw the line (holding
onto tail) beyond the dock cleat so as you pass a bight forms around
the cleat. You'll have a loop that runs from amidships, around dock
cleat, back into cockpit. Wrap tail around cockpit winch as you pass
the dock cleat. Can pull in or ease if needed to gently slow the boat.
With boat stopped leave boat in forward idle with wheel to port and it
stays snug against the dock. Acts just like a spring line but is
easier to get it around the dock cleat.

Reverse the process to leave the dock. With boat in forward idle and
spring attached, remove other dock lines, get into boat. Then with
boat in nuetral pop the bight off the dock cleat and recover the line.

needle bearing that I needed to repair my Barient 28 ST winch. He told

My Navtec hydraulic backstay tensioner blew a seal in the middle of the
Queen's Cup race from Milwaukee, WI. to Grand Haven, MI. I called
around and got some recommendations on a hydraulic manufacturer and
repair shop near Grand Rapids, MI. Took it in on Monday and hope to
have it back in less than a week. We shall see how it goes. From the
recommendations that I got and from meeting the gentlemen who will do
the repairs, I think it will be repaired correctly. It is a bonus that
the gentlemen knew a good deal about sailboat racing and understood the
stresses on the hydraulic backstay adjuster.

I had great success in 2007 taking my Navtec ram and remote pump to a
local hydraulic shop that works on heavy equipment rams like dozers and
backhoes, etc. Chesapeake Rigging wanted $800. I could have bought a
new system for another $200.

Instead I took it to a shop and it cost me less than $50 and they bench
tested my equipment to 4000# for 30 min to prove it was tight. The guy
said the O-rings cost him 25 to 50 cents each. That was ten years ago
and it occassionaly weeps some oil but it holds pressure for weeks on
end.

Re: Stus-List insurance

My insurance is with Boat US, and my rates did not go up. Since I sail
on Lake Michigan and not in coastal areas or waters, I speculate that
location may have something to do with it. We don't have hurricanes
here. I also speculate that the hurricanes which have destroyed so many
boats are mostly the blame for the increases in insurance rates,
deductibles, etc. About the only thing one can do is shop around.

Something similar happened to me with regard to our home. Home
insurance leaped up because we do not live near a fire hydrant or fire
station. I complained and then shopped around.

If your deductible is zero, that means that your deductible has gone
from whatever you had it, to zero without increasing your premium for
the zero deductible. In other words, you had no claims in the past
four years, and your deductible has gone down twenty-five percent per
year over those four years. I had a claim, last year, and I didn't
have to pay a deductible. It started out as a four percent deductible,
and it went down when I had no claims for four years or more. I had
the same question as you, until they explained it to me. My insurance
is due to renew in April, and the deductible will probably go back to
four percent, plus whatever the new rates have increased to.

Re: Stus-List C Photo Album owners database

2017-12-12 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List

Mike,

I have a 1981 C 36 with Rod rigging. It has winches, etc. for racing.
I am 70, and would have very little problem sailing her by myself,
provided I rigged her up for that purpose. You must have roller
furling. You should have the jib halyard and main halyard lead aft so
that if necessary you could drop one or the other with out having to go
forward. I have never had to do that. That means I would likely hoist
all of my sail area, but then again on a beautiful day with little
chance of stuff happening, I would. I have never put up a chute by
myself. Just not smart or in the cards at this age. Finally, having a
working auto pilot helps a great deal when single handing. Don't forget
to provide your self with jack lines and a harness as well as a life
jacket.

The most difficult part for me is getting in and out of the the slip. I
have a rather large racing wheel at the helm which serves as a trap. In
addition, I am probably not as quick as I use to be. Finally, C
designed the stanchions on my boat in such a manner that they stick out
slightly, just enough to allow me to catch a piling coming into of
leaving a slip. Having removed one in that manner, I don't want it to
happen again. My previous boat from many years ago, did not have that
issue. Just had a line on a piling and as I coasted into the slip,
grabbed it and put it on my back winch. Boat settle in to the slip
without an issue.

It is a lot of boat to single hand, but it is a great sailing boat.
When I race it I usually have five crew members plus myself. Have done
it with less, but that is not optimal. Five plus me, and we feel safer
about changing sails etc. And since it is a mast head rig, the head
sails are larger than if it were a fractional rig.

All of this said, you can probably do single handing with the boat, but
I would suggest a smaller vessel would likely be easier.

Stus-List AIS and MMSI as well as marine radio use in Canada

2017-04-09 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List
If a boat crosses from the United States in to Canada and stops at a
Canadian port, must the vessel (sailboat) have a ships station license
from the FCC? I believe the answer is yes. Also, if the vessel has AIS
and MMSI, I believe that is necessary to have a ship station license and
have the MMSI issued by the FCC so that it meets the international
treaty requirements.

I thought someone out there would know if I am correct or incorrect.

Also where I might find the correct forms on the FCC website, if they
are needed.

Thanks in advance

Re: Stus-List Mast Step Box 1980 CnC36

2017-01-17 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List
I have a 1981 C 36, and it is keel stepped, not deck stepped. Even if
your mast is keel stepped and you were some how going to raise it a bit
without completely removing it, I would suggest that the process would
be risky. Better to take it out and investigate the problem completely.
May be a smarter and safer way to go in the long run. In addition, you
get the opportunity to check out all of the rigging, wiring, etc. and
service or replace what is needed. Just my thoughts.

Right you are Dwight, but the marina in Florida is insurance crazy and
skill short when it comes to sailboat rigs. They insist that boat
owners hire a "professional rigger" to assist with unstepping or
stepping a mast. My plan is to improve the situation for now, and
unstep the mast to fix the step and a few other things when I get to a
place that has a better attitude and maybe a crane. Everyone in our
sailing club on Lake Erie unsteps their mast every year, so it is a
little hard to relate to people who insist that it is such a big deal
just because they don't do it much themselves.

Good luck Steve...I think it would be a much easier fix with the mast

Whatever is supporting the mast step on my 1980 C project boat
has sunk by 1/2 to 1.0 inch, and the mast is pulling down on the cabin
top. There is no visible sign of rot in the wood and fibreglass cross
members at either end, and I am planning to attempt to put an aluminum
plate shim underneath. The step box is constructed of anodized
aluminum about a half an inch thick, and the bottom plate extends
forward forming a shelf through which 2 bolts or lag screws hold it in
place. There are no other visible mechanical fasteners.
Judging from all the talk over the years about mast steps, I am
guessing that someone on the list has removed a similar box on a
similar if not identical boat. What did you find? Were there other
fasteners? Was the fibreglass holding it down? Any issues getting it
loose? What is underneath that not obvious?
I am hoping to do this without unstepping the mast, but just jacking
it up a bit.

Re: Stus-List 3QM30 Head Gasket

2016-09-14 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List
I paid a professional to do mine last summer. Your price is not bad.
It is more difficult than it looks. I ended up with new heads as there
was a hairline crack in the head. He found it by xray, I believe. We
ran into difficulty finding a the new head and found it in Wisconsin.
Had I tried this myself, I may not have found the crack and therefore
would have made a real mess of the repair and spent a bunch more money
doing it again. Just my thoughts on having gone through this.

So...we are leaving harbor to make our way down to Mystic for the
Rendezvous. As I usually do I turn around and check the exhaust for
water and color.

Today the color as darkish grey and it looked like oil was coming out
as well.

I do an immediate 180 and go back to the mooring.

Mechanic is out within the hour and confirms my suspicions. Head
gasket. To do the job right (injectors, planing head etc) he estimates
$2,500 to $3,000. I think the price is fair but I wonder if I could do
it myself. Anyone have any experiences around this? I am a fair
mechanic, but I don't want to be penny-wise of pound foolish and I have
never done anything like this before.

Thanks in advance...

Stus-List Circuit Breaker Panels for 1981 C 36

2016-07-14 Thread Glenn Gambel via CnC-List
I was wondering if anyone knew what brand, type, etc. single pole
marine circuit breakers would fit in the original panels that were
installed on a 1981 C 36? My original panels are in great shape, but
I have three or four circuit breakers that are no longer functioning and
must be replaced.

I am hoping that this will not be as painful a project as some are. Any
help would be appreciated.
