Re: Stus-List wheel squeak

2017-08-25 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
I had the rudder out of my '83 29-2 last winter. The only metal
bushing/bearing is where the post comes thru the cockpit sole. There was
only minimal wear on mine so I didn't replace it. The fit between the rudder
post and fibreglass rudder tube is tight and there is no stuffing box like
on the prop shaft. There is just a tube which acts as a long
bushing/bearing. If the grease in the tube has gone hard, then injecting
fresh won't clear out the old grease. If you decide to drop the rudder be
careful as it is only held in place by the two set screws in collar that
sits on top of the post. I'd guess it weighs about a 100lbs and doesn't
really have any good hand holds. So not that easy to work with. When the
boat on the hard I can move the rudder from stop to stop with the pressure
from one finger.

Hello.

On a similar note

The wheel on my 1986 29-2 has been stiff since purchase 3 years ago.I
have lube'd everything in the steering system that was recommended by folks
on this list including pumping fresh waterproof grease into the rudder post
stuffing box thru a zerk fitting (with old grease pushing out of the top).
I read a post some time ago indicating that there is likely a bushing at the
top of the rudder post where it enters the cockpit sole - at the emergency
tiller steering unit. Wondering if anyone knows whether the 80's vintage
C 29-2's also have bushing/bearings down in the rudder post stuffing box
?If yes, also wondering if anyone knows where I can get replacement
bushings or will I have to get someone to make them?

I am borrowing a trailer to haul the boat and on a pretty tight time
schedule so would like to have parts in hand before I haul.

Thanks.

Stus-List Deck Organizer Source

2017-04-30 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
All
I'd like to stack another deck organizer on the original. I measure the C to
C dimension of the existing organizers as 2 3/8". I've been unable to find
any organizers with this C-C dimension. I've looked at Harken, Schaeffer,
Ronstan, Selden etc and either the dimension is wrong or not provided as
part of the specs. Based on measurements from the computer screen, Garhauer
looks like it might be the right size, but I did not get a response to my
enquiry to them.
Does anyone know of a brand that is compatible with the C original.

Just received the results from the fall check-up and the local sail loft has
diagnosed Windstar's ('85 33-2) mainsail as "beyond expired". Cue the Monty
Python...

The current main has two sets of reef points, (cringle at the leech and and
ring-on-webbing-straps at the luff.)

No telltales other than streamers off the leech.

IIRC there may be a leech line.

4 partial battens battens.

There are two cringles at the clew, one above the other, and what I believe is
called a "shelf" of lighter weight cloth along the foot. Have never used this
out of ignorance, but perhaps I should.

it has a rope foot, slides on the luff.

I will have Rolly Tasker in Thailand quote, as well as UK sails here in Toronto.

I value the 33-2's performance but most of my sailing is recreational sailing
here on Lake Ontario. Would like to distance race but not looking to be
ultra-competitive at the top level. Don't want to buy another Main for
this boat in the next decade.

Any thoughts or recommendations on a replacement, or comments on sail lofts?
Many thanks!

2016-09-16 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
Stop 37 is at the Etobicoke Yacht Club. (EYC). When I was a member there, I
don’t recall it participating in the weeknight club races, which is consistent
with the info in the ad. While I don’t know how well the boat has been
maintained, I don’t think you have to worry about “rode hard and put away wet.”
There are at least two listers who are members at EYC. Perhaps they can shed
more light on the current status. If you’d like a condition assessment based on
a visual from the finger dock. Let me know, I’m at the adjacent club now.

As an aside, my sense is that the price of Canadian boats has not changed with
the strengthening of the US dollar, consequently boats close to border are good
value for US buyers. Also our season is May to Oct., or really just July and
August, so boats have minimal use,

Re: Stus-List continuous line furlers

2016-06-21 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
I have a Selden GX 7.5 on a 29-2 that I use for my assym.

Pros relative to sock/snuffer are:
1. can rig at dock
2. No need to go to foredeck to release or retrieve
3. Can gybe by furling and the gybing and unfurling, if you want to
4. Can get sail in quickly if wind picks up
5. Get more use of assym as a result of the above.

Cons relative to snuffer are:
Boat bucks

In summary it was a great upgrade.

My forestay is set back from the stem and I'm able to attach the furler drum
to the stem and not have it interfere with the genoa furler. Without that
clearance you'd need a sprit which would make the package more complex to
install, take more time to rig and cost more.

Re: Stus-List C and C 25 water in lockers under settees, Now Stability

2016-06-14 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
That stability graph definitely shows the 29-2 as tender.

However I could wash the windows on the 25-2 if I had a mind to. I also
owned a 33-1 which, when we were racing, would have the person responsible
for helping the genoa around when tacking, ankle deep in water if the wind
was up and they were slow in getting off the low side. I don't see the 33-1
on the chart.

I'm reluctant to argue with a proven methodology, but I find the 29-2 to be
both stiff and forgiving compared to the other 2. To me the 29-2 heels to a
certain point where the rail is still not buried and then says you really
should do something with the main and if you don't it will start to round
up rather than continue to heel. Is it possible that this behaviour is due
to the hull shape and this is not captured in the stability test which is
static. If so that could explain why the boat is rated as tender, but will
only heel to a certain point in real world conditions.

when the sailing hard to weather with the rail buried. If I were going to
tighten the hull/deck joint screws I'd start with those closest to the

This is not an issue with the 29-2 as it is a very stiff boat and doesn't
appear possible to bury the rail.

Garhauer is another option. Another lister figured out a way to have Garhauer
modify their MT-1 system to fit the 29-2. The issues were the narrowness of
the channel in the bridge deck in which the traveller sits and the need to
raise their standard track by 1/4". I went for a variation of his idea (I

Re: Stus-List Soft thumping/banging when in gear at low-rpm?

2016-05-12 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
I assume that you have a Yanmar transmission. The shift lever mechanism is
quite complicated and Yanmar have specific requirements about the minimum
length of throw from neutral to ensure full engagement of F I just spent an
hour or so with my head upside down adjusting the transmission on my 2gm to
spec. The attached link –( see dwg 2-1 angular adjustment in particular) is for
a KM2_A transmission and I think you probably have a KM3-A. The shift mechanism
is the same for each. If you don’t have the KM3_A google the transmission you
have and find a copy of the shop manual and follow the instructions for
checking and adjusting the shift mechanism.

Stus-List Prop Walk CC 29-2

2015-05-14 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
Boat was significantly over-propped when I acquired her. Largely because
transmission ratio is 2.2:1 not 2.62:1 as stamped on the casing. While the
props that came with the boat (a Gori 15X10 and a 3 blade fixed 14X9) were
too big, prop walk was not an issue.
Just installed a Campbell Sailor 12x6 and the prop walk is severe (in spite
of the additional tip to hull clearance). It is basically impossible to turn
the bow to port in reverse . The bow swings to starboard and then once there
is some movement through the water will crab sideways, but the bow will not
swing around to port. I have not found any combination of throttle and
rudder position that makes the situation any better.

I need to replace the prop to avoid getting into trouble in close quarters
at some point. Question to CC 29-2 owners: Has anyone found a prop that
works well going forward and in reverse.

Thanks in advance.

Stus-List Yanmar Gear Box Mislabeled

2014-09-04 Thread Martin Kane via CnC-List
I've owned a CC 29-2, with the 2GM engine and KM2-A gearbox for the past
three years. Initially the Yanmar tach would show 2200 rom at WOT in gear
and about 3400 in neutral at WOT. In year 2 I replaced the installed 14X9
three blade with a 15X10 folding prop that was spare. WOT rpms in gear
decreased by a small amount. In year three I installed a 13 x 7 Campbell
Sailor. WOT rpms increased to 2500 (as measured by Yanmar tach).

I advised the prop supplier that based on the Yanmar tach and a laser tach
that the engine was still not able to reach the appropriate WOT rpms. They
offered to resize the prop, but mentioned that the 13x7 prop had produced
good results for other owners. Given that info I decided to find out why I
was different before sending the prop back for rework and proceeded to
measure the rpms of the engine and prop shaft at different speeds with a
laser tach.

The answer is that even though the gearbox plate has ratio of 2.62 stamped
on it. The actual ratio as determined by comparing crankshaft rpm to prop
shaft rpm, is 2.21. This ratio was also confirmed by turning the crankshaft
by hand and observing the prop shaft. So it appears that the gearbox is
mislabelled. The only possible hint of this is that the 2.62 has an X
stamped through it.

I'm posting this in case it helps other listers dealing with an overpropped
situation and to see if anyone has ever heard of this happening before.

I don't know if the PO had the gearbox rebuilt or if is even possible to
switch one or more gears to change the ratio from 2.62 to 2.21
