Stus-List Re: windlass battery under vee-berth

2021-03-15 Thread Mike Taylor via CnC-List

You are going through the same thought process I did a few years ago. At the
time I decided not to go that route for the issues you mentioned plus I didn’t
want the weight. I had an opportunity to get welding cable and used that for
wiring a 1500w windless. It’s braided but not tinned. I tinned the ends before
installing the lugs. Wire is over 1/2” not including insulation. Harbour
freight or Princess auto would be a good source for the cable.

Stus-List Fwd: Broken pin in electronic connector

2020-06-25 Thread Mike Taylor via CnC-List
Mike

I literally just did this. My granddaughter broke off the pin for her earbuds
in the headphone socket on her Kindle. There are lots of videos on YouTube.
In the end I was able to pop it out with a sharp object (map pin) and lots of
persistence (pun intended)

Hi Will

For my rain water collection I tied into the scupper next to the toe rail on
the deck.  Used a tee and two shut off valves.  One side goes to the original
drain and the other I put a hose barb on.  Let it rain for a few minutes attach
a hose and then switch valve positions.  Your deck may not have scuppers like
on the 37’.   In the past I’ve used the canvas between the dodger and bimini.
I just unzipped it about half way and placed a bucket at the end of the flap.
More work and wetter.

Hi
Love all the great responses of this forum—thanks all!
Has anybody rigged up a rainwater collector? I’m not real sure about using the
sails with all the crap in the air, but I’m happy to use a purpose-built
plastic sheet tied to boom or mast or outrigger and funneled unto one of the
water intakes on deck.

I’ve been using a Delta Sureset 35 as my primary for well over 10 years now. I
can tell you it has held in 50 kt. winds. My secondary is a Bruce 44 that
hasn’t been out of the locker in years.

YMMV

Troy is a little to far upstream to take a mast down. Most do it at Hop O Nose
in Catskills or for the DIY Type at Castleton Boat Club. All stop at the
beautiful town of Waterford whether north or south bound. We spent a month
there this past spring waiting for the canals to open. Thirty plus boats
headed up either the Erie or Champlain

The Moses-Saunders Power Dam ar Cornwall/Massena controls Lake Ontario and the

The deciding factor is controlling the spring flooding at Montreal and depths

No I cannot remove the sole. The screws are under the Lonseal. I bought it
from Defender in the US and shipped it to a UPS store in the US. I’m only 30
minutes away. Noah’s marine in TO carries the product.

http://www.noahsmarine.com/Psearchresult.asp?stye=ss

One of the reasons I went with Lonseal is that I asked a local chandler for T
plywood and was told they don’t handle it anymore because of damage in transit.

2019-11-16 Thread Mike Taylor via CnC-List

If your existing T plywood is in good shape then I think a good sanding is
all that would be required. Mine was delaminating. The hardest part was
gluing it down. As I mentioned before I didn’t do the off gassing and got a
couple of bubbles.

2019-11-16 Thread Mike Taylor via CnC-List

I used 5/8” construction grade plywood for the substrate. I would have
preferred 3/4” but that would have put the Lonseal slightly proud of the liner
edges. I did screw the substrate down but some screws didn’t grab well. Maybe
one of those vhb tapes would be a good alternative.

Stus-List FW: Fwd: Fwd: Cabin Sole resurfacing

2019-11-15 Thread Mike Taylor via CnC-List
Bruce, Rod, Et Al

Here is a link to some pictures of my Lonseal cabin sole install. Cabin Sole

Sorry Rod I down race so I can’t answer your questions. My opinion; the
product itself is a superior vinyl product and with proper installation there
should be no issue. That being said if you drop something the Lonseal will
hold up well but the substrate may dent and be visible.

Some tips
Design substrate (plywood) with as few seams as possible.
Router bottom outsides edges with ½” router
Apply a minimum of 2 coats of epoxy to all pieces on all sides
Roll out the Lonseal on a solid flat surface (living room floor) upside down
then lay plywood upside down in the pattern it will be applied. Cut Lonseal at
least 1” larger than required on all side. Makes it easier to install and
easier to trim after glue is set.
Tape joints like you would with drywall. I didn’t.
Use j-roller instead of recommended 100 lb. roller. See mod I made to j-roller
so I could apply more weight
Follow gluing instructions to the letter especially the off gassing. I didn’t
and some bubbles occurred that couldn’t be rolled out.
Use router with edge trimmer to cut bilge ports.

I was lucky that my sole was a bit narrower than the LonSeal. Just ensure the
pieces in the v-berth and the small piece in the galley lines all line up.
Same thing for the bilge access ports. I had to make a small lengthwise cut
around the mast truck to fit around the centreboard tube. It can’t be seen
unless you really look for it.

Hi Mike and group,

If anyone has good photos of the installed Lonseal PlasTeak product,  I'd like
to see them.

As much as I am a traditionalist, ease of repair my win out.

I'd really like to know if you can notice a distinct difference between this
and real teak.

Thanks!

Here is a link to the product I purchased from Defender.  Correction on product

The cabin sole on my boat is not in great shape.  There are areas where the
holly stripes and are gone or pulling away.   I am considering what to do and
have a vague recollection of someone using a glue-on faux teak/holley covering
over the wood (Nautikflor?) but I can’t find that discussion anywhere in the
archives.  Has anyone done that?  Thanks- Dave

When mine acted like that it was the circuit board. If you go the pro route
make sure they are knowledgeable with 12 volt systems. I went the pro route
(residential) and he overcharged the system. It took me a while to get the
pressure lowered. If you have a danfoss compressor there is lots of info of
the web.

Stus-List Fire extinguishers

2018-07-19 Thread Mike Taylor via CnC-List
Well the recent Kidde recall got me to checking my fire extinguishers. I have 6
onboard. One was dated 1977 and another 1984. I’m willing to donate them to
anyone that wants them, you pay the shipping. LOL

I’m curious how did you seal your board in place.

Re: Stus-List Marine Batteries

Don’t be scarred away from AGMs. Persuasion came with 2-4d AGMs and a Group 31
starter. I replaced the Group 31 about 6 years ago from Canadian tire, still
going. The important factor here is to charge them properly. I would say your
are good to go as you already have AGMs.

I would suggest thinking very hard if you need AGMs. They are more expensive
and require much better management and maintenance (i.e. quite specific
charging regime). In normal use, they won’t last longer, either.

If you are forced to have a battery in the enclosed compartment (in your
cabin), you may consider a gel battery - non-spillable and virtually, no
off-gassing. From what I understand, they are less sensitive to variations in
charging voltage (you can use a standard charger).

Many people had decent results with standard wet lead-acid deep cycle batteries
from Costco. Since you are in Toronto, personally, I would stay far, far away
from Canadian Tire.

Others would probably chime in on various brands that do (or don’t) work on
their boats.

Hello everyone,

I need to replace my house battery and my engine battery (atomic 4).  I also
have a dedicated battery for my Windless (don’t ask).

Any suggestions.  I currently have 31 AGMs.

Thanks everyone.
