They make inflatable air wedges for leveling as well, $10-30 in my
experience but only used them for lighter woodworking projects, not an
engine.

Re: Stus-List 37+ Cruise Speed

2020-08-28 Thread Chris Riedinger via CnC-List
Motor mounts could be replaced with carefully located wood blocks and a
porta-power or bottle/scissor jack... Or maybe get some fine-pitch
allthread and make yourself a jack of sorts

You would have to re-align shaft/coupler.

I would recommend looking at your mounts to see if you can move at all, or
if they are maxxed out. You can loosen the coupler bolts, crack the
couplers away from each other just a bit, and find out which way your
engine needs to go. Say you find .006" gap on stbd and .012 on Port, .000
on lower, and .006" on upper, motor needs to come up some on the front
mounts, and go a bit to port. So you move your mounts (symmetrical side to
side, so make sure you are going up straight and not twisting) up a few
turns on the front mounts (I like to paint or marker one side of the hex
nut so I can easily count turns). Check your alignment. Then the real fun
begins. Hopefully your mounts have some small side-to side adjustment
allowable (maybe the mounting holes are just slightly oblong or have a
milled slot). Loosen one side's mount at a time and 'nudge' the motor a
little bit, tighten the mounts back down. Check your alignment again.

Hopefully this explains some of the reason why getting an engine replaced
is so expensive. This is very time consuming work, often performed in the
worst possible access areas of a boat.

We do about 7 with a 3 blade maxprop and a yanmar 3gm, our bottom gets
wiped every few months but we try to take it out often enough that the
ablative does it's job. Diver never complains about hard growth.

Any of you have propspeed or barnacle barrier applied to prop or shaft?

IIRC, an A4 was rated as 30HP, but the shaft HP was something like 17or 18.
Which is why an2 cylinder Yanmar is a suitable replacement foe an A4.

2020-08-24 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List
Losses might be 5 or 10 percent, but I never heard of almost 2/3s!
There is the prop issue and gearing though, that 30 HP is at 3600 RPM. The only
A4s that can do that are in planing boats or have the 2:1 reduction gear.
Absent the gear you are probably at 22-24 HP at best and many A4s came severely
overpropped and can't get past maybe 1400 RPM. This is really nice on a calm
day, you hit hullspeed just off idle, but any headwinds will about stop the
boat.

I do about 6 knots at around 2100-2200 RPM and 5 inches manifold in calm water
with a clean bottom. I can push up to maybe 6.5-6.8 at full throttle, but the
large noise increase is not worth it. My A4 is direct drive with a smallish
prop, so adverse wind and seas really knock that speed down. Also towing the
big RIB is a drag - literally.

Peter,

My 1983 LF 35 came with a Yanmar 3HM with a 3 blade fixed prop. It’s happiest
around 2200 RPM at roughly 6 knots. Anything more than that it sounds like the
hull is shaking apart. Not a lot of sound deadening in general with that
diesel, but it gets pretty loud at higher RPMs. Since I replaced the shaft,
cutlass bearing, installed a dripless shaft seal when purchased 4 years ago,
vibration is likely motor mounts which are probably original.

Stus-List 37+ cruise speed

2020-06-23 Thread Len Mitchell via CnC-List
I run at 2200 rpms and get 6.5 knots. That’s where she is smooth but working a
little. It feels like the sweet spot. She will get 7+ if I add throttle but
vibrates more and makes more noise. Every 37+ could be a little different
depending on drive train. Universal M35 and a 2 blade max prop at 22 degrees
here with a slippery VC17 bottom and zero barnacles in fresh water.

C 35-1 with Universal 25XPB and 14 x 14 Martec 2 blade folder - ~6.4
knots at 2450 rpm (80% max) and about 0.7 gph fuel consumption. Suspect
prop is slightly under pitched.

I believe the recommendation is to cruise at 80% of max rpm. For my Universal

Re: Stus-List 37+ Cruise Speed

2020-06-23 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Probably as many opinions on cruise speed as on best anchors, etc. Plus like
many simple questions, the answer: ‘It’s Complicated’ (also a local power boat
name!).
I faced this issue years ago when I decided to go to a 2 blade folding Gori
racing prop from my former 3 blade feathering prop. IIRC, it started with the
space I had for the prop to spin with minimal interference/maximum clearance
from the hull. This set the prop diameter and my waterline length along with
engine/transmission optimal rpm set the prop pitch to reach hull speed in flat
water.
In my case, it required a different transmission than the original that came
with my Beta 28 and which worked fine with my Max-Prop.
Anyhow my Beta has ~ maximum power at 3200 rpm with 3600 as redline and most
diesels like to be run and are designed to run near max rpm for various reasons.
Thus with guidance from Geoff at AB Marine and these parameters, I got the new
prop and transmission and now cruise in flat water at ~7.2-7.4 knots with 3200
rpm.
This was also my cruising speed before I made the changes but again the prop,
transmission and engine were ‘matched’ (mostly by Max-Prop blade diameter and
it’s adjustable pitch) to have the engine do 3000-3200 rpm and the boat get to
hull speed (+\-) at that rpm in flat water.
YMMV but this is my story and I’m sticking to it!

My decades-old Westerbeke 40 is happy at 2000 RPM, maybe slightly more, which
produces a solid 6.5 knots in good weather.

I'll second Edd's response, but we have a Yanmar 3JH@E with 36 hp, and won't
get much faster at higher RPMs.  Maybe 7.4 kts.
I'm hoping for a bit more when I get the bottom done (which will be happening

Rob,

At about 2800 RPMs in my Beta 30, I’ll get the Enterprise up to Warp 7.2 (7.2
knots). If I increase the RPMs, she won’t go faster than that.

All the best,
