Stus-List Defender

Defender sale has started.  Not like it has been in the past.  Very
little savings over their every day Defender pricing and the UPS
shipping - ouch.  Almost cheaper to go to local West Marine, who will be

Stus-List Defender Sale

2022-03-25 Thread John McCrea via CnC-List
All,

For the local sale they do seem to have some decent discounts that should
carry over the online sale next week.

My suggestion is, if you have an online account, put things in your basket
now or at least know what the $$ is for your items before the sale and then
see how much the pricing changes when the sale starts on the 27th. Good
luck!

Stus-List Defender sale scheduled this month

2022-03-04 Thread CHARLES SCHEAFFER via CnC-List

Hi all,
I have no affiliation but wanted to share news that Defender, recently under
new ownership, is advertising their annual sale this month. I have no way to
know if prices will be as good as in past years, but I have saved hundreds of
dollars by ordering stuff from them during their annual blowout sale when their
whole store was discounted 15% to 20% for a four day period. Again, I have no
affiliation and can not predict the ammount of discount.

Maybe someone in Connecticut, closer to Defender, knows or can find out?

Stus-List Defender Sale

2018-03-21 Thread Chuck Gilchrest via CnC-List
Come Wind, Rain, and Snow, Defender's annual warehouse sale starts this
afternoon online and will run all weekend at their facility in Waterford,
Ct. I'll be there representing my company Novatec Braids (Novabraid Rope)
from Yarmouth, NS and there will be a myriad of other factory reps on hand
to answer questions and give recommendations on everything from
refrigeration to anchor chain to foul weather gear and more. I was told by
one of the GM's at Defender that in celebration of their 80th year in
business, the normal discount for virtually every item in the store has been
increased from 7-10% in past years up to 20% for the sale. Thursday is
typically mobbed at the warehouse, but I suspect that the weather is going
to keep more than a few folks at home.

Should you be in the area, it is truly worth stopping by if for no other
reason than to peruse the clothing selection. I've bought a brand new Henri
Lloyd Dry Suit (for dinghy racing) there for $150 when the regular retail
was well over $500. Item such a bottom paint, brushes, fenders,
electronics, close outs on radios and speakers, and the largest inflatable
boat assortment in the country very aggressively priced.

Stop by and ask for me in the rope and cut goods area. Would love to talk
C with anyone interested.. Put the SUV in 4WD and bash through the
drifts to go shopping for the boat!

Re: Stus-List Defender sale - Raymarine eS78 Navionics? plus SH GX2200 VHF/AIS

2016-04-02 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
Actually, the “S” in eS doesn’t mean sonar; the eS75 doesn’t have it. The “eS”
Series is an update of the “e” Series, with more of a glass-bridge look and a
slightly faster processor. I’d recommend going with that for Nate; as far as
pricing goes, I’m not sure I can compete with Defender during their sale, but I
can beat them the rest of the year.

Nate — consider getting the eS variant that comes bundled with the Navionics+
North America charts; that’ll give you detailed charts on both the US and
Canadian side of Lake Superior (and the rest of the Great Lakes). And unless
you’re planning on using the fish finder built into the eS78, you could just
get the eS75 without instead and save a few bucks.

You’ll also need to order the NMEA0183 data cable separately, as it’s not
included with the 7” eS Series; that’ll allow you to interface the GX2200 with
the MFD for AIS and DSC functions. The Raymarine part number is R70414.

Allen, If you mean that combination masthead light (steaming and anchoring)
that Aqua Signals provides, I just replaced the bulbs in mine with LEDs from
MarineBeam LED Lighting. They work perfectly. The tricolor steaming light
actually has a three color bulb, which makes all 3 colors very bright. I did
replace the old lens, though, which was crazed after years of weathering at the
top of the mast. Defender sells the replacement. Only 0.1 boat buck!

Here was my order, but check their website to make sure they fit your
AquaSignal light. Mine is series 40, I think.

Just make sure that you use the green LED bulbs behind the green lens and
the same for the red.

I found out the hard way that using white LED bulbs behind the colored lens
reduced the visibility dramatically and had to purchase the matching LED
bulbs in order for the forward running lights to work properly

cold drinks. Now that we are going to be spending weekends (and more) on the
boat we will appreciate the refrigeration.

So far the completion list for this spring is:
1. New fixed ports
2. LED interior lights (dual red and white in main fixtures)
3. Added a second bank of group 27 batteries (and added a fuse to the original
group 24 pair)
4. New cushions ordered and due before launch.

Before launch I still need to replace the fuel filter and water pump impeller.
Still looking at replacing the navigation bulbs with LED.

Agreed re UPS, their brokerage fees for Canadians are insane. In many cases,
the shipping and brokerage fees exceed the value of the product being
delivered. UPS wanted a $35.00 brokerage fee for a warranty replacement sump
pump that was only worth $35.00 to begin with; I refused it. The only shipping
method I will allow from the US is USPS/Canada Post; usually no brokerage fees
and, in most cases, no customs either on small orders.

I got dinged with a $93 CAD brokerage fee buying something from Defender
just last week. With UPS, I expected some brokerage, they always do, but
$93 was just unreasonable. I would have refused the package had I not had
it shipped to my Mom's address. She couldn't get a hold of me so she paid
it.

What I purchased was $150 USD :(

All told the pedestal guard (Navpod SG10) cost me over $300 CAD. Which is
what it would have cost me locally (I suspect, didn't actually find it
locally).

Chuck,
In my experience U.S.P.S. works best overall for shipments to Canada. The
upfront shipping cost is often higher than for other carriers, but there is
less added cost over and above the sales taxes, and for lower value items,
there is usually no added cost or sales tax at all. Some vendors chose U.S.P.S.
shipping options that are more expensive than necessary, but that is usually
just carelessness. There are limits to what U.S.P.S. is willing to carry, but
they will handle some pretty big packages. A fellow lister just sent me a
complete below decks autopilot system, and years ago I got a complete radar
system through the mail.
I also had good experiences with FedEx for shipments where U.S.P.S. was not
a choice, but that was some time ago, and I have no recent experience with
them.
Defender's web site did not give me a U.S.P.S. option for shipping to Canada

Re: Stus-List Defender sale

2016-03-30 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List
Chuck,

The best, for sure, is the Canada Post. They have a system, where if you (as
a US shipper) sign up with them, they charge a flat $5 fee for any cross
border handling of an item. But for that you have to be big enough that it
is worth the effort to set it up.

The next best is USPS. It comes out on this end via Canada Post, as well
(with all issue associated with it, but it is still better then most).

Then comes FedEx.

Then there is a very long gap

And then comes UPS.

On some items (especially bulky or heavy), it is worth its while to make a
trip to the border. Often times you can save $100 or more on shipping. If
you do, suddenly UPS is the best option.

My (Canadian) $0.02

Marek

This is an ongoing issue with UPS (if you cross-border shop). They always
charged an exorbitant fee for "brokerage fees". If you can try shipping to a
UPS store at the border (if it is feasible at the location you are at, but
for Port Stanley, you can make a trip, probably) or you can try convincing
the shipper that a USPS is better (sometimes it works).

Dave,
I think they can special order most anything from Harken, but the real deals at
the sale are on the items they keep in stock. If you are able to physically go
to the sale , there will be a Harken rep at the event all 4 days so you can
pick out the exact thing you need. Or you can call Defender's call center but
you may want to have the Harken part numbers you need and don't expect a ton of
engineering expertise from the special orders desk.
You may also want to check APS as I saw they're running a Harken sale as well.
I don't work for Defender or Harken. I'm an ex-Edson guy that now runs the US
office for Novabraid Ropes from Canada.
Happy shopping!

Re: Stus-List Defender sale

2016-03-30 Thread Dave Godwin via CnC-List
Chuck,

I'm in the process of organizing/reorganizing/updating my deck hardware. I'm
looking for some Harken footblocks that are not listed online or in the
catalog. Question: would they be able to be ordered through Defender?

And typical of me, I just placed an order for a bunch of stuff. Last week...

Best,
Dave

Re: Stus-List Defender delivery (and a plug for Nexus)

Hi Wally!

yea I understand that and, it makes sense that the manufacturer would sell
refurbed stuff and they would probably make sure that the consumer could never
tell it was refurbed. No scratches or damaged packaging.

However, this is the vendor opening factory sealed packaging in their facility
and still trying to sell as new. I think there is a big difference. I can
see that they want to show the item to someone but, OPEN ONE BOX, not ALL of
them. The factory put a seal on the box for a reason. Everything probably
is fine but, WTF...it is becoming a matter of principle.

I'm on the fence as to whether I want to make more of a deal about it...

Well, all's well that ends well.

It is true that just about every purchase/registration agreement
includes a provision for the manufacturer to provide refurbished
hardware as new. That has been true for decades. Heck, if they had to
burn every return, they would have to factor that into the business
model and adjust the retail price accordingly, which would put them out
of business because there's always someone ready to make an empty
promise to take your money to make a 30/60/90 day objective.

Having done upgrades and additions to my Nexus NX-2 system, I (*years
ago*) bought a 'multi-display' online and opened the pretty new box to
find a beat up old NX-1 part inside. NX-1 had been out of production
for years... I called the reseller and expressed my dissatisfaction in
brutal terms. It's important to know when to shut up and listen, so I
did, and as a result I received a brand new part. I also received RMA
instructions, but was so ticked off that I wanted a prepaid UPS voucher
because I wasn't going to pay for the return. Never got the voucher,
but I kept the old part around for years just in case a Federal Marshall
showed up with a subpoena. VBG

Anyway, I did want to mention that my Nexus NX-2 system has performed
flawlessly for ten years now. I couldn't sail without it.

Wal

they open the boxes...it does not make any sense to me... Is the fact that it
now says TackTick mean anything... It's just weird... guess I'll stick with

Subject: Re: Stus-List Defender delivery (and a plug for Nexus)

Well, all's well that ends well.

It is true that just about every purchase/registration agreement includes
a provision for the manufacturer to provide refurbished hardware as new.
That has been true for decades. Heck, if they had to burn every return,
they would have to factor that into the business model and adjust the
retail price accordingly, which would put them out of business because
there's always someone ready to make an empty promise to take your money
to make a 30/60/90 day objective.

Having done upgrades and additions to my Nexus NX-2 system, I (*years
ago*) bought a 'multi-display' online and opened the pretty new box to
find a beat up old NX-1 part inside. NX-1 had been out of production for
years... I called the reseller and expressed my dissatisfaction in brutal
terms. It's important to know when to shut up and listen, so I did, and
as a result I received a brand new part. I also received RMA
instructions, but was so ticked off that I wanted a prepaid UPS voucher
because I wasn't going to pay for the return. Never got the voucher, but
I kept the old part around for years just in case a Federal Marshall
showed up with a subpoena. VBG

Anyway, I did want to mention that my Nexus NX-2 system has performed
flawlessly for ten years now. I couldn't sail without it.

Amongst other things I received from Defender last week was a BG Triton T41
display. It only had a nylon strap around the box that you could slip aside to
open the box. No seal. All the little bags inside where sealed and everything
look new.

I did a bit of research today and nipped in to the Binnacle to have a peek at
the various instruments in their boxes and see how the packaging looks. None
of the Raymarine, and most other manufacturers', boxes arrive from the
manufacturer/ distributor sealed. The rationale is that most customers want to
fondle what they are thinking of purchasing so the boxes often may have been
opened by several prospective customers before they are sold. Makes sense when
you consider the cost of having one of everything on display so you don't have
to open a box.

Okay,
So the Tack tick/raymarine instruments just showed up Thursday night.   I
opened the shipping box and pulled out the Tack Tick box and the first thing
I notice is the factory seal is broken.  I go no further and write them the
next morning and tell them about the seal.  Thay then say,
Mr. Haughey, Thank you for your email. There are times when our sales
department will
need to open the boxes on some instruments to double check something such as
if all the parts are present. I would say go ahead and inspect the item to
ensure all pieces are in the box and nothing looks amiss. There should be
instructions in the box which will tell you what should be included. If
anything looks questionable, please send us a photo and we can check on our
end to see if that is how the unit should be or not. I do not think what you
received is anything used, though, we likely just had to get into an unit
box to check on a part. Sincerely,...

I really don't like this answer. Why would they open a box the check if all
the parts are there??? I call BS!

Anyway, I open the box this morning and there are scratches, the lens
protectors are all bubbles underneath. They just called me as I'm writing
this...

He is telling me that they aren't packages well from the factory, they have
never taken a return...blah blah blah...but, I'll get another one right out
to you...

He have a much better argument if the factory seal wasn't broken... The
stuff is all rattling around in the box! This is how ray marine packages a
$2000 system?

I guess Ill find out when I get the next one...

I
got my stuff yesterday too!  I did not get a chance to open the boxes yet
but, should do that this evening.

I had walled out of there without
ordering a new hatch.  My bowmar hatch has a broken hinge and there are
no replacement parts available.  So I ended up calling then like
thursday, after the sale and they honored the sale price on a lewmar low
  profile model.

I pulled the old hatch over the weekend and all
the bolts were suck and some snapped.  I guess that the nw hatch was
definitely in order.  I've now blown my budget for this
  year.

Makes more sense to me that the instruments are sealed and locked up behind the

Do you suspect
this was maybe a display unit at some point? Are they offering an open
box discount like many big box retailers do?

I pulled the old hatch over the weekend and all the bolts were suck and some

Re: Stus-List Defender delivery (and a plug for Nexus)

2013-04-10 Thread Wally Bryant

I got my stuff yesterday too! I did not get a chance to open the boxes yet

I had walled out of there without ordering a new hatch. My bowmar hatch has a

calling then like thursday, after the sale and they honored the sale price on a

I'm going to have a look at a couple if boxes myself tomorrow. I'm wondering if
they are selling remanufactured units, which I've bought for years with no

I have purchased 3 separate Raymarine products for my boat in the last 2 years
from 3 different suppliers including Defender. Each time the product arrived I
am surprised by the very un-Apple like way they do their packaging. The only
reassurance I have that the product was last touched by foreign factory workers
is that the instructions and supporting bits are sealed in baggies.

Re: Stus-List Defender delivery

2013-04-07 Thread Chuck S
Hi Danny,
Sorry for the ordeal. You are on the right path. You got a story but a response
nonetheless. Give Defender a chance to fix their problem. I've had better
results from them and think you will too, over time. I wouldn't except
scratched merchandise unless it was advertised that way. I doubt Raymarine
would admit to leaving seals off kits, but I don't think you need to call them
yet. If the second set is in the same condition, I'd call Defender and ask them
if Raymarine could be contacted. I've always had excellent service from
Defender, except when I ordered the wrong thing and they were happy to take it
back. I'm sure they will correct this error.

Theory: Raymarine just bought TackTick, and I see the instrument covers say
RayMarine instead of TackTack, so maybe they are opening old stock boxes to
change the covers? Regardless, they should never be scratched. My two year old
TackTick displays say TackTick, while a new mast mount bought this year says,
RayMarine. Neither should ever be scratched.

Having opened a whack of new Raymarine gear over time, it looks as though that
equipment is possibly a demo or a customer return. I'd either return it or

Okay,So the Tack tick/raymarine instruments just showed up Thursday night. I
opened the shipping box and pulled out the Tack Tick box and the first thing I
notice is the factory seal is broken. I go no further and write them the next
morning and tell them about the seal. Thay then say, Mr. Haughey,Thank you
for your email. There are times when our sales department willneed to open the
boxes on some instruments to double check something such asif all the parts are
present. I would say go ahead and inspect the item toensure all pieces are in
the box and nothing looks amiss. There should beinstructions in the box which
will tell you what should be included. Ifanything looks questionable, please
send us a photo and we can check on ourend to see if that is how the unit
should be or not. I do not think what youreceived is anything used, though, we
likely just had to get into an unitbox to check on a part.Sincerely,...

I really don't like this answer. Why would they open a box the check if all
the parts are there??? I call BS!

Anyway, I open the box this morning and there are scratches, the lens
protectors are all bubbles underneath. They just called me as I'm writing
this...

He is telling me that they aren't packages well from the factory, they have
never taken a return...blah blah blah...but, I'll get another one right out to
you...

He have a much better argument if the factory seal wasn't broken... The stuff
is all rattling around in the box! This is how ray marine packages a $2000
system?

I guess Ill find out when I get the next one...

Here a few photos.

I got my stuff yesterday too! I did not get a chance to open the boxes yet
but, should do that this evening.

I had walled out of there without ordering a new hatch. My bowmar hatch has a
broken hinge and there are no replacement parts available. So I ended up
calling then like thursday, after the sale and they honored the sale price on a
lewmar low profile model.

I pulled the old hatch over the weekend and all the bolts were suck and some
snapped. I guess that the nw hatch was definitely in order. I've now blown my
budget for this year.

Having opened a whack of new Raymarine gear over time, it looks as though that
equipment is possibly a demo or a customer return. I'd either return it or
negotiate a discount. It likely works ok. The warranty will be the same.

FYI, Defender Sale ends at midnight, tonight.

Just ordered $900 from Defender: bottom paint, zincs, new cam cleats, snatch
blocks, twing blocks, and a TackTick Mast Bracket.
Saved $350 on price and $63 on tax. Shipping will add $24 back.

I should order another set of foulies, but ran out of research time.

Just stopped in West Marine in Newport. Big whiteboard inside front door Will
match Defender prices until 3/24. Spent way too much, wife's gonna kill me,
but I didn't have to leave the island! I think tax is cheaper than shipping,
especially on paint.
