Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
I didn't mean to imply that the lofts were quite that bad, they weren't. People were nice enough but I got the feeling their minds were elsewhere, their attention at the boat show, the timeliness of replies etc was pretty indicative. Maybe my problem is Toronto :) There's a lot of money in this town and the reality is that I am a small fish. Better business elsewhere. If I was racing I'm sure the benefits of the local guys would outweigh any cost advantage the foreign lofts have. Fair enough. For the little guys like me with the old boat, the foreign lofts present a good value, and I'm not racing. The sail shape is night and day better than the old sail, that's enough to please me. I'm still the limiting factor, not the sails :) Seems there's an opportunity here for a new kind of freelance middle man. The guy who will come out to your boat and do all the measuring, consulting and test sail. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
Danny, As I recall, my main needed the slugs for the tides marine strong track installed. So in order to finish the sail, the loft had to take deliery. With my headsail it was complete straight off the boat from South Africa. So, I guess maybe the loft paid the delivery for the former so they could finish it. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
I was a plumber in a previous life and this reminds me of the service that was extended at the plumbing supply companies. I didn't mind back then because I got preferential treatment. But if you weren't known to the guys in the supply house they would treat customers terribly. Leave people standing there without even acknowledging them for 30 minutes or more. Charging a 30% markup and just being rude if they ever did get around to serving them. Then came Home Depot with low prices for all and customer service for all. Go into a local plumbing supply now and see a very different attitude. I'm just a homeowner to them now. I still have my plumbing license but I very rarely install any pipe or replace a water heater. I like the service I get walking into a supply house now. It's all supply and demand, you may have the supply to meet a demand but, so does the Inter-webs with free shipping and no attitudes. You have to make people want to come into your establishment if you aren't the only place to get the product you're trying to sell. Usually, things find and even keel. Local prices start to compete with the online guys because they would rather sell more product and keep their standing with their supplier. Lets say you sell one widget with $10 profit but you neighbor sells 10 widgets with a $1 profit. who is their supplier going to like more, the guy that sold one or the guy that sold ten? -- Original Message -- From: Stevan Plavsa via CnC-List <cnc-list@cnc-list.com> To: "cnc-list@cnc-list.com" <cnc-list@cnc-list.com> Cc: Stevan Plavsa <stevanpla...@gmail.com> Subject: Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail Date: Thu, 25 Feb 2016 12:20:47 -0500 "I will admit that sometimes it does feel a little bit like I'm just a small fry and that I'm wasting their time. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
For a performance sail, the design is the most critical part. Getting the dimensions, draft, etc. right is what makes the sail fast. Not every sail maker knows the older C designs and how they sail. Assembly can be in any facility with good processes and quality control. When I wanted a new headsail for my 35-1, I asked the Detroit 35-1 group who designed their sails. He worked for North. My local North rep knew him well. They worked together to design the sail which was built in Sri Lanka. This day and age, sails are designed based on human inputs and then computers cut the panels out for the assemblers. The design, once completed, is simply a file that can be sent to the assembly site anywhere in the world. Dennis C. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
I purchased a Rolly Tasker 155 a couple of years ago for Suhana. It's a good sail but like the OP, I have nothing to compare it against except the original genoa which was deteriorating. So, leagues better than what I had. It was $1600 shipped to my door from Thailand and arrived two weeks after I placed the order. The local lofts all wanted about double for same/similar features and a lot more time. Here's the rub and here's where I disagree with people on this list and others that tout the "support" and "cusomter service" of the local guys. I was treated better by the foreign sail loft. They answered my emails in a timely way, they were polite and *interested*. The locals, almost all of them, had a standoffish, almost arrogant attitude and they were slow to provide pricing and email replies. to me, that's terrible customer service. First and foremost, I want to be treated like a valued customer and that starts with the first hello, it doesn't start after I open my checkbook and they come out to my boat. No thanks. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
My last North 155 Mylar/Kevlar was made in Sri Lanka as was much of the clothes hanging in our closets. One of my sailing buddies retired from Kellwood. Kellwood, VF, and a few others make most clothing sold in the US. He frequently traveled to offshore Kellwood facilities. He told me the North Sails plant was next door to one of the Kellwood sites. Bottom line is he said the quality control systems in these offshore facilities is as stringent as onshore plants. My local sail maker made me a 155 years ago. We were in position for 3rd in class in a regatta when the tack on the sail let go. Seems he forgot to sew on the web reinforcement through the tack ring. He was on a nearby boat and watched as the sail ripped 1/3 of the way up the luff tape. When we got back to the pier he came over and asked what happened. I reached in my pocket, pulled out the tack ring and handed it to him. He repaired it but it will always be a repaired sail. So much for Made in USA quality. Dennis C. For a start I would measure it. Measure the luff and compare to your existing sail first. If much longer you may have problems with hoist. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
Curtis, That's kinda like saying, "I have $60k for a new car but I found these other cars for $45k. They all have 4 wheels, and a gasoline engine. Why would I pay more? I bought the 5 part series on sail buying and care from practical sailor. It was a good place to start getting me prepared to choose a sail maker. Just out of curiosity I priced a main sail with Bacon (who I hear uses China sail loft for manufacture). They have an online quote system. It came back about $1500 less than Quantum. I compared the 2 quotes and couldn't really understand the price difference. When I took the two quotes to the opposite vendor they both said, "Well these are quotes for 2 completely different sails." In the end Bacon adjusted their features to match Quantum and Quantum adjusted to match Bacon. Each provided a new quote. Now I had 2 pairs of quotes. Each pair had features that nearly matched and were within 500 dollars or less of each other. Factor in that Quantum was 5 minutes away, not 60. And that they came to the boat to measure and answer any questions. And I could go to the loft to compare features. And that they would come out and "fit" the sail after delivery. It was quite obvious that Quantum was the winning choice for me. I would have gladly considered any other loft if they were local. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
OK I just did look see, I compared to both the old rolly tasker and the Neil Pryde main sail. The Rolly Tasker was the poorest quality. There was no reinforcing on the corners except some belting straps. Both the Neil pride and the Precision sail had built up corner patching as well as the belting straps. the Neil Pryde was certainly a better sail than the Rolly, but still nowhere near the quality of the workmanship on the Precision Sail. I don't know how many times I said Wow or holy crap this is really amazing, or I can't believe the quality, it's really a great sail. So, part of the problem with me is I don't really know a lot about Sails or Sail construction. My experience with sails and sail making is minimal and even I could see the quality that went into the construction of this sale. I wish I had inspected the Quantum sails I bought for Lolita mre closely. But again, I didn't know what to look for anyway. They were good sails though but, I don't think I got the same quality of cloth as this precision. The Precision sail has quadruple stitching on all the panels, double stitching on the sun cover, substantially more material at the corner patches and they used sunbrealla for the sun cover and the UV Protected Waxed Tenara Thread. I added a bunch of extra like an Offshore Package, the sunbrella, ans some other stuff I don't recall right now. the sail cloth, again is Challenge 8oz Marblehead Cloth. Precision offered me 3 quotes. A 300 series at $2221, a 400 series at $2802, and a 500 series at $3640. They then offered me a 20% discount if I ordered with a short period of time. I took longer than they wanted but they still honored the 20% discount. The 400 series would have been about $650 less. the 300 series wasn't even a consideration because they weren't offering the 20% off. That made it almost as much the 400 series. i guess they really wanted to sell the better cloth so far I am really impressed. The truth will be when we fly it. I did take some pictures side by side of both the Rolly Tasker and the Neil Pryde sail so, I'd be happy to share those with any of you no problem. I searched and search for sail for lolita and got loads of prices. In the end out of a comfort level and a 15% boat show discount, I chose the local Quantum loft. this time I wanted to go for the better cloth at a similar price. i basically did a sq ft comparison and paid a very similar sq ft price. If I can offer any more info I'd be happy to. My all in, delivered price was $3555. I figure I'll have this for at the very least 10 years so, $355 a year isn't too bad. My Quantum sails were still like new after 4 years. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
I would ask them what to look for. Every sail maker is going to have a different set of standard features. I would look for properly finished sticking. Double stitching through out and triple in high stress areas. Sail cover on the correct side. Personally, I'd like to see the exposed edges of all the fabric either hemmed or zigzag stitched. Obviously, check for all of the agreed upon features. Emblems, numbers, spreader patches. Rounded corners on the added layers at stress points. I got mine from Quantum in Solomons, MD and paid about $700 more. Can't say it was necessarily money better spent. Re: Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
Danny, Congrats! I got a spinnaker launch bag from them. Nicely made. I can't tell much until I hoist, but others probably know more. Stus-List Got a New 135% Head Sail
Hello all,I just received my new head sail from Precision sail loft last night! I'll be unrolling it tonight to have a first look. I took a chance to order online from this Canadian based company. The sail was built in Sri Lanka from what I can tell. I ordered the Challenge High Modulus Dacron. My question is, what should I be looking for as I inspect the new sail? I plan on comparing the old Rolly Tasker head sail and the relatively new seeming Main. Other than that, I don't really know enough about sails to know if I got what I paid for. I'll probably unroll it and snap a bunch of pics if anyone would be interested. Thanks for any insights and advice you may be able to offer.
