Stus-List New sails, new wind

2021-02-09 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List
Interesting discussion on sail selection.  And that is a broad subject.
What kind of racing?

While I have retired from racing, I clearly remember racing with a sail
inventory4 head sails (150% light and heavy air...#1, 135%...#2, and
a 100%..#3), 2 spinnakers (systematical 3/4 oz. and a 1/2 oz.).   Many
races we (I as the foredeck person) was changing head sails to suit
changes conditions.  We sometimes did a spinnaker peel (something we
practiced).  The main stayed full until we had to go down to the #3.
Much of this racing was on a C&C 33 MKII and a C&C 34R.

Where I sail here in Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, there is no
one sail that works best for any given race day.  I am now a reacher,
not a racer, but I still know the difference in sail selection for the
conditions. I now sail much of the season with a furled 135%...it is my
go to sail...many days my 100% blade is the sail to have...one day last
year, a fellow lister here that we raced a lot together, was coming with
me for an afternoon sail and he said "it is going to be a light air day,
bring your 155% light air Kevlar today I did we dropped the 135% and
hoisted the 155% and it was the right sail for the day.  The next day,
no way could I hoist the 155%.

One head sail for racing is something I have no knowledge and/or
experience in and therefore have no relevant or helpful advice.

If you wish to race with only one head sail, and your prevailing wind is
around 10 knots true, my best guess would be a 135%.

Stus-List New sails, new wind

2021-02-08 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
Hello all listers.
I have a hypothetical for the racers among you.
I need to replace my 3DL headsail--its mostly patches after ~ 5 years of club
racing locally. This is about my 3rd laminate style headsail---and my last!
I am probably going with the North 3D Nordac which has replaced the former 3DL
technology with what they call a composite sail--not laminated but still built
over a 3D mold of the sail shape desired--if I understand this correctly. I do
not need the super light and costly Raw or Endurance.
Anyhow, I plan to move to a new sailing area off Southport, NC near Bald Head
Island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River--basically on the NC coast.
All my club racing to date has been in the Pamlico and Neuse Rivers,
occasionally racing to Ocracoke across the Pamlico Sound. For these areas, a
155% headsail is the largest you can race with locally without penalty and so
that is what I have always used.
The North sail maker suggested because of the higher coastal winds that I may
not need a 155% since the wind strength is higher at the coast. OTOH, a racer
there uses a 155% headsail and says he does well with it.
I checked the historical average wind speed for Southport and New Bern and the
coastal winds are from 20-25% higher than at New Bern. For instance, the avg.
wind speed varies from 5.5-8.1 knots in New Bern vs. about 7-10 knots in
Southport, or about 25% higher on average.
Further, I know from experience that my masthead rig becomes seriously
overpowered once the wind gets greater than about 12 knots true, when its time
to reef the main(I only have 1 reef point) and if it goes above ~ 15 knots, I
need to roll the headsail a few turns (or change down to a 135% or 90%
headsail).
I am not inclined to go less than the 155% allowed locally (PHRF) but maybe I
should--the local North guy suggested ~ 140%. This might better match the local
wind and is less expensive since less material is used. OTOH, I don't want to
be under canvassed on the light air days.
Further, there is the question of sail material weight to consider.
I plan for this to be my last headsail purchase and may use it some for local
cruising in addition to club racing. BTW, it will be used on a furler either
way.
So what would the listers do!!

Stus-List New sails?????

2020-12-15 Thread Ted_Relinda--- via CnC-List
Question to the group.
I am getting a new set of cruising sails for our 40.   My choice is going to be
between Doyle or Quantum. I have had Doyle sail before and their service and
quality were great. Made in St.Pete Fl. right up the road. 100 miles. Quantum
sails with almost identical specs comes in about 400 bucks lower but are made
in Sri  Lanka. Service is relatively close on on the east coast of Fl. Given
between the two, what might you buy. Has anybody had experience with the
SriLanka sails. It's my understanding that several lofts and a lot of sails
come from there.
Thanks

Stus-List New sails

2020-11-01 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
OK--my 5 yr old 3Di North 155 head sail is almost dead--especially after a tear
along the foot during a race on Halloween.
I think I want to go with a non-laminate sail (their life locally seems to be
around 5 years in my use of them) and since I mostly club-race and maybe CRW, I
am not going with a 'Grand Prix' sail of any kind. I'd just like to get more
years out of my headsail than the 5 yr average I have had over the last 15
years with laminate sails.
In ~ 2010, I purchased a kite, mainsail and 155 genoa from Hood because several
locals liked the longevity of their Vectran reinforced, high 'density' woven
Dacron which Hood made themselves in Ireland.
Both the kite and the mainsail are still in good shape but they were unable to
get the shape of the 155 correct, even after I returned it for adjustments--it
actually had a 'negative' shape (i.e. going to upwind it wanted to curl to
weather over some of its luff?).
I eventually had it re cut locally which made it more like a 140% so its not a
155 but at least it doesn't have a negative shape!
Anyhow, I am looking for a longer life 155 for local club racing and 'cruising'
to other local races, although most of this is with the engine.
Since Hood no longer exists and I would be reluctant to go there after the
experience I had with the 155, I am thinking of 3Di NorDac from North. If you
believe their hype, it has the advantages of a molded sail, the longer life of
a Dacron and per a quote I had 2 years ago actually a little less expensive
than the non-molded Nordac.
I know that Hood has been purchased by Quantum but I don't know if they
maintained the high 'denier(?) Dacron reinforced with Vectran that Hood used.
Thoughts from the list on this would be appreciated.
In the meantime, I hope a local sail maker can 'patch' the foot of my 3Di so I
can finish our winter series (5 race days thru January 2021). Unfortunately ,
the patch would require a sail tape about the width of 'butcher paper'!
Thanks,

I also used UK for both my main and new 145

right due to the Schaefer in boom furling set

it. Love the new sails and Stewart in Sidney was
great to work with.

David,

We have sails on order with the UK loft for spring delivery for our C&C
35-3.? UK is building a 140% Genoa of 7.3 oz high modulus dacron with a
foam luff, UV sun shield, sail numbers and tell tail windows.? The main
is 8.3 oz high mod with 4 full battens, 2 reef points, sail numbers, C&C
logo and cunningham.? UK will transfer all of the Tides Strongtrack
hardware to the new main.? Both come with sail bags.

We had a UK Genoa and North Main on our Redwing 35 (C&C 35-1).? The
North took three tries to get it right.? It was a good sail when they
finally got it right bit it was frustrating.? The UK sail was perfect
out of the bag.

Both of the sails are still flying on Joe Della Barba's C&C 35-1.

Our sails are being finished in the Chicago loft.

I had very good luck with a Nordac main from North on my 34. After 8 years
still had lots of life left in
it and held shape. Perhaps the cloth is different now?
Speaking of sails I still have 2 really nice jibs from my 1982 C&C 34. Went
on a harken roller. made for the boat
by North Sails
135% mylar/kevlar with taffata sharkskin on both sides. used maybe 5 times.
155% mylar/kevlar with taffata on one side. in very good shape.

+1 on the Hood Vectran--I had my main made of this in 2010 and it is still
going strong--in the meantime, I have gone thru (almost) 3 laminate headsails.
At the time, I think Hood manufactured its own sail material (at least of the
Vectran stuff) in Ireland. Joe Cooper came to the boat and did the
measurements.

I have a Hood Vectron main that I bought for racing in 2007.  It is now my
cruising sail and still has reasonable shape and would recommend it.  A J30
skipper was so impressed with it that he bought one for cruising (Vectron was
not class legal for racing on a J30).  However, since the Hood loft got bought
by Quantum (2017) I do not know if the cloth would still be available, It was
last year but I had to ask the Loft.  I have attached a fairly technical
exploitation on sailcloths and below is a newer article found in Practical

David,

I buy my sails from Bacon. They use the Quantum loft for 40% less.

No matter what, get at least 2 full battens. A tri-radial cut will cost
more but last longer. Do not get cheap cloth no matter what cut you get.
Hydra Net is significantly more expensive the dacron but if you want a sail
that lasts 10 years check it out.

Re: Stus-List New Sails...

2020-01-15 Thread Matthew L. Wolford via CnC-List
Echoing Neil’s comments about North – at least in recent years -- not only was
the NorDac main on my boat less than stellar, another boat in my local fleet
had a similar issue (North ended up replacing the main on that boat) and my
next door neighbor (cruiser) had an issue with his NorDac genoa. New to my
boat this past summer was a North spinnaker. The local North rep was on board
when we raised it and saw three numerals for the sail number instead of five.
They are fixing the sail number over the winter (not sure how without messing
up a brand new sail).

The bottom line: given the prices charged by North, the sails should be near
perfect (no mistakes) out of the bag. In my view, they are too expensive and
have gotten too big for “regular” sailors like me.

David,

We have sails on order with the UK loft for spring delivery for our C&C 35-3.
UK is building a 140% Genoa of 7.3 oz high modulus dacron with a foam luff, UV
sun shield, sail numbers and tell tail windows. The main is 8.3 oz high mod
with 4 full battens, 2 reef points, sail numbers, C&C logo and cunningham. UK
will transfer all of the Tides Strongtrack hardware to the new main. Both come
with sail bags.

We had a UK Genoa and North Main on our Redwing 35 (C&C 35-1). The North took
three tries to get it right. It was a good sail when they finally got it right
bit it was frustrating. The UK sail was perfect out of the bag.

Both of the sails are still flying on Joe Della Barba's C&C 35-1.

Our sails are being finished in the Chicago loft.

I just bought a new main from evolution sails. It's a kiwi based company
but their local rep in Chicago really took his time to work through things.
Was less than quantum but more than precision for a similar sail. I got a
racing laminate from their element line for my 35-3 but they also offer
white sails.

David, its a good question; I purchased new Main and 135% from Doyle, St.
Petersburg, FL loft and am happy with them; dacron white sails, no racing, no
oceans crossings on my horizon ...
Price was reasonable; we had to do many conversations and photos via phone,
and I had to do all of the measurements, because of the distance...there are no
sail makers or outlets anywhere near us...: a Chicago North loft quoted
staggering prices, so I looked elsewhere;

I can see where having a person on board that can see and measure the boat
personally would be a great benefit.

including North Sails and Precision I decided to go with Doyle Sails in Salem
MA.  Chris Howes at Doyle worked with me on the quote and throughout the
process.  It was a positive experience and I am very pleased with the end
result.  I would highly recommend Doyle as a local MA sail loft. We selected
the Durasail product line for the main and genoa - both using cross cut Dacron.
In the case of the main, they used a 7.62 oz HA (high aspect) material which
is designed to take the additional vertical load from the aspect ratio of the
sail.  I think that it has more fiber in the vertical direction than the
horizontal direction.  The new sail was designed with a loose foot which really
helps with making the outhaul effective.  Four full battens, two sets of reef
points and attachment of the luff track slides from my old sail were all
included.  The Genoa is 7.77 oz “Marblehead constructed” and included a sun
cover and luff flatter for reefing by partial furling were included.  The sun
cover on the furling genoa is a relatively thin material that is white and
unlike Sunbrella doesn’t weigh down the sail significantly - it is hard to
notice it is there if you are not looking for it.  They also included sail bags
and a full collection of sail ties, C&C logo and pre-installed a complete set
of tell-tails on both sails!  The set of main and genoa cost around $5000 + tax
if I remember correctly for my boat - your boat is larger and it is a year
later so presumably will be more. Doyle makes sails both in Salem and in
Jamaica.  I specifically requested that they make the sails locally in Salem
and they were fine with doing that (and didn’t charge a premium).  I was able
to take my old sails to their loft to have them measured and I picked up the
new sails at the same location so there wasn’t any shipping charge (did have to
pay MA sales tax of course).  Also Doyle finished the sails significantly
earlier than they quoted me and well before the start of the season.  I also
appreciated that they took me seriously and gave really good customer service
even though this was a small order for them (at least judging by what they had
going on in the loft at the time). North sails quote was initially a lot more
although they came down quite a bit (to just slightly more than Doyle’s price)
when the sales person learned of the price point I had selected - but they also
had a long lead time quoted that would have been well into the middle of the
season for us.  Hint - it can be worth pitting one maker against another - they
seem to have some ability to adjust pricing so negotiating is definitely an
option.  Precision’s base quote came in much cheeper than Doyle although by
time you add in all the extra’s to the same rough quality and components
provided by Doyle, it is unclear if it would have been less expensive (it was
hard to make an apples to apples comparison since they were using different
materials and the details were different).  Precision charges separately for
each “additional" thing including reinforcements, reef points, etc. - all of
that is included by default from Doyle.  Overall I really appreciated the
service and knowledge of having a local loft do the work and I also liked
supporting the local economy.  I would definitely go with Doyle again next time
I need a sail. New sails are great to have and after one season on the boat
they still look and feel almost new so I think that they will last a long time!

We always had North Sails on Zoomer and the Jib’s were 3DL on the #1 but the 2
and 3 were Dacron then Kevlar reinforced. Main was Dacron but radial cut, not
cross cut. They lasted at least 7 years with regular buoy racing.
Did you talk to Ben Sperry? He’s still sailing with Dacron on Gentian and does
very well both in distance an buoy events. Plus he’s very local.

I have a Hood Vectron main that I bought for racing in 2007.  It is now
my cruising sail and still has reasonable shape and would recommend it.
A J30 skipper was so impressed with it that he bought one for cruising
(Vectron was not class legal for racing on a J30). However, since the
Hood loft got bought by Quantum (2017) I do not know if the cloth would
still be available, It was last year but I had to ask the Loft.  I have
attached a fairly technical exploitation on sailcloths and below is a

About two years ago I bought a NorDac main from North. It is a different kind
of dacron, and is very heavy and cumbersome. Mine was cut incorrectly, and has
since been re-cut. It looks much better now and seems to be performing
acceptably, but I would not recommend it due to its bulk and clumsiness.

The local sailmaker in Erie recently figured out a way to cost-effectively make
a relatively low stretch dacron main. Dave Bierig (Bierig Sailmakers), (814)
459-9600. I would not ask Dave to make a racing genoa these days, but if I
were buying a dacron main for my 42 today, I would ask him to make it. I
suspect his reconfigured main is relatively fast and a great value. He’s
approaching retirement, so you might need to twist his arm.

Hello,

I am sure we have been there and done that, but please indulge me…

Going through the process of shopping for new sails. Not a small budget item
for a 40. Know the arguments of local vs. national vs. offshore. Cruising
with offshore racing and cruising with occasional beer can. Main and 125%.
Leaning toward high quality Dacron cross-cut as they are easier to repair and
I do not want to get into the laminates. Blew a big budget on those years ago

Specific questions are regarding cloth choices generally and specifically as C
& C have tall skinny mains (especially the 40). What has been your
experiences with the differing sail lofts? I am getting prices with 50% swings
and that is a bit mind-boggling as I am getting information that many sails are
built in the same lofts overseas and re-branded. I am sure that is an
over-simplification, but there it is. Difficult to compare pricing with the
cloth specs being a foreign language to me.

Thanks in advance.

No matter who or what you decide on, give the service and support of a
local loft considerable preference. IMO there is nothing like getting
immediate service, personal and professional measurements, test sails,

Jay,

My suggestion is - shop around. The prices for reasonably decent sails vary
quite a bit.

You are in a bit better place than I (there are some sail lofts in Toronto),
but you may find that mail-ordering works quite well.

There is a discount sail loft right on the other side of the boarder (Somerset
Sails, in Barker, NY). He makes reasonable sails at very reasonable price
(about half of what a local Doyle dealer quoted).

Of course, it would be your measurements, so measure twice and then check again.

Before you seriously consider used sails, do shop around.

Good luck

I've been very pleased with the sails I got from Chesapeake Sailmakers (Chuck
O'Malley) in Annapolis. Super service, and the roller furling 145 sails very
well when furled to 110 as conditions dictate. On the Landfall 38, sailing jib
only is a good option in heavy weather. The sails have held up very well,
despite some long voyages in ~30 knt winds.

Rick,
All of the sails on my boat have been made by Scott Allen in Annapolis. Scott
has been associated with several brands over the years, even going independent
for a while, but all of my sails are UK’s. I love the 120% dacron jib they made
for me last year. I’m not sure how old my 2+2 dacron main is, but it still
shapes very nicely and is in very good condition. Also, I am very happy with my
decision to down-size the jib to 120%, moves the boat very well and I never
have to partially furl it or reef the main. You would be surprised how well the
boat moves in a moderate breeze and the sail is much easier to handle when you
are shorthanded (which I usually am). LP measurement is still 20’, so it is 500
square feet, only 50 less than your 135%.

It’s time to replace the main and genoa on my 38 mk2 (and I actually have the
money to do it).

I’m more of a cruiser than a racer any more. I only do about 4 charity races a
year, and have been adding cruising gear to the boat for trips to the Bahamas
(and Bermuda next June). So I guess I’m looking for durable sails that still
give me good performance – but not a set of racing sails.

My old main is a Neil Pryde main with 5 full battens and a Tides Marine Strong
Track system that has given good service over more than 10 years. I’ve retired
the carbon 155 genoa and am using a roller furling 135 headsail right now.

I’ve asked for a quote from the sailmaker I’ve used in the past (Omar Sails in
New Bern, NC). Based on recent positive comments on the list I’ve also
contacted Dirk Sharland at Rolly Tasker Sails in Florida. And because of my
experience with the Neil Pryde main I’ve contacted their loft in Hampton, VA.

I’m looking for a good balance of performance, durability, and cost. Pretty
much weighted in that order.

I’m open to suggestions about features I should look for, and other lofts from
which I should request information and a quote.

Of course, by the time I need to purchase sails, most likely we’ll be using

Stus-List New sails for my 38

2016-08-06 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Rick,

If you are comfortable with Chinese sailcloth you might want to contact
IslandPlanet http://islandplanetsails.com/ Island is out of Florida and
Peak Sails www.peaksailsna.com and Peak is out of Virginia (Closer to
you)

They seem to be a good compromise between the direct order from china like
Rolly Tasker and the traditional loft. It looks like they offer services
similar to a traditional loft but the cloth and sails do come from China
with associated discounts. I have talked to Island Planet before and the
vibe was positive.. Both seem to get pretty consistent positive reviews
online.

Another pretty competitive loft that's more like a discount North is Shurr
Sails http://www.schurrsails.com/default.asp out of Pensacola Florida.
Their sails are quite popular on the lake here. The Main guy: Hunter
Riddle has a really good reputation as a designer of innovative and fast
sails.. Their cruising sails have a good reputation for solid build and
reasonable price.

Good Luck with it.

Stus-List New sails for my 38

2016-08-06 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
It's time to replace the main and genoa on my 38 mk2 (and I actually have
the money to do it).

I'm more of a cruiser than a racer any more. I only do about 4 charity races
a year, and have been adding cruising gear to the boat for trips to the
Bahamas (and Bermuda next June). So I guess I'm looking for durable sails
that still give me good performance - but not a set of racing sails.

My old main is a Neil Pryde main with 5 full battens and a Tides Marine
Strong Track system that has given good service over more than 10 years.
I've retired the carbon 155 genoa and am using a roller furling 135 headsail
right now.

I've asked for a quote from the sailmaker I've used in the past (Omar Sails
in New Bern, NC). Based on recent positive comments on the list I've also
contacted Dirk Sharland at Rolly Tasker Sails in Florida. And because of my
experience with the Neil Pryde main I've contacted their loft in Hampton,
VA.

I'm looking for a good balance of performance, durability, and cost. Pretty
much weighted in that order.

I'm open to suggestions about features I should look for, and other lofts
from which I should request information and a quote.

I am envious! My tape drive 150 is likely 12 years old and predates me by two
previous owners. It still has a nice shape although is starting to get
brittle. I can only imagine how nice it was when new.

You will love what new sails do to your boat

I'm so excited. Stuart Dahlgren, from UK Sails NW, is driving down to Vashon
from Sidney to deliver and fit my new Tape Drive Mail and Genoa. He shipped
them from Sidney to Blaine, to avoid BC tax and duty, clever man!

We stopped into his loft last summer on our way to the C&C Rendezvous to get a
genoa repaid and left with an order for both sails. A nice discount and the
incredibly advantageous exchange rate closed the deal for us. The free
delivery was a bonus!

I'm torn about the wind...do I want light air to ease the installation or a
nice breeze to test em out?

Either way, Ill try to get some pics to share.

Bill,

Beats me how old. It came from another 35/3 owner on the list. I've put
3,000 miles on it the last 2 seasons, and it shows.
Shape has not changed, but the luff is worn/has small holes. I had repairs
done last year. No delamination luckily.

The sail is fine on the Bay, but I would not go offshore with it. In my
very limited experience, when laminate sails fail, they fail completely.

Stus-List New Sails for Alera

2015-08-20 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List

John

Aside from the ongoing problems with the incorrectly constructed
mainsail, it's very nice. We are cruisers and pretty much only go
out with two on board, myself and my wife Lynn. She is not yet
comfortable at the helm (I'm working on that). So, the in boom
furling and accompanying electric winch saves her a lot of problems
and keeps her in the cockpit. . The PO left a lot of weird stuff,
but the boom and winch were not among them.

The down sides are a rigid vang, and no out haul, both of which limit
the amount of mainsail tuning. But there are ways that I am learning
but using the baby stay and the combination of the halyard and
furler...it's a learning process at this point. It sure does furl
easy! Just crank it down to any batten and you're done!

I am really looking forward to the new main to see what a difference
that makes. These are the first new sails I have ever had...so, I am
for sure stoked!

Congrats - lots of luck. new sails are always fun. Tape drive is nice stuff.

How do you like the Schaefer boom? I?ve used the forespar variant
but never had an opportunity to play with the Schaefer.

Stus-List New Sails for Alera

2015-08-20 Thread Tom Buscaglia via CnC-List

Listers

I know I should have asked you all before taking action and I am
certain that someone out there will have a better solution...that
said, I am pleased to announce that I pulled the trigger on new sails
for Alera. The PO installed a Schaefer In Boom furler but went cheap
on the mylar sails to go with it. They were ~15 years old and both
sails have been in for repairs every year for the past two years. The
main was actually not made correctly to the stringent Schaefer specs
and the Genoa was to the point of disintegration along the
leech. Aout four days into our annual three week sailing trip, the
leech detached from the Genoa (again).

We called ahead and pulled into the Van Isle marina in Sidney BC and
right up to the dock at UK sail loft to get the genny repaired. They
fixed it and even gave us an overnight berth with power and
everything. I met Suart Dahlgren, the owner. He had been the tech
talk presenter at the C&C RDV a few years ago and was familiar with
the boat. He is also very knowledgeable. What started as a
discussion about possibly getting a new Genoa ultimately turned into
deal for both primary sails.

The Mainsail was never done right and at its end of life. Of course,
the cost was a huge impediment to doing it. But Stu gave a sweet 15%
discount of each sail and an additional 5% for getting both...but the
real clincher was the 0.75 USD to CAD exchange rate, which amounted
to an additional 25%. Lynn and I talked it over, slept on it and
were unanimous on going for it! :D

Since I need thin sails to fit the boom when furled we went to a set
of UK Tape-Drive Cruising sales. They're due for delivery in
October. I'll let you all know if they are as good as I hope.

2013-02-25 Thread James Reinardy
I am looking forward to using my new genoa made from the Flex material.
Based on an earlier thread in this list, I went to Haarstick as well. As
Sylvain describes, the cross cut construction methods used make it a great
cost effective option for higher end sails. I found the price right in the
middle between Dacron and a North cruising laminate molded sail. I do plan
on racing with it, replacing some aging UK Tape Drives that came with the
boat. I dealt with Steve Haarstick himself, who spent a great deal of time
with us on the phone going over options and explaining his philosophy. He
helped me overcome my hesitation with dealing with a loft halfway across the
country. So far, I recommend the service, the sail is in the basement now
ready for hoisting once the snow clears around here.

You may want to check for FlexP, made by Dimension-Polyant, it's
multi-directional fiber make it unnecessary to cut a sail in tri-radial
fashion so they build it cross-cut and the saving made because of that make
it interesting for a high-end cruising laminate. They do win several races
though, and they tested the new material for 2 years.

Re: Stus-List new sails

2013-02-24 Thread Gary Nylander
As most of you have, I went through this a couple of years ago. After having a
3DL with taffeta on one side (one of the early ones built that way) which
delaminated into a pile of strings (really cute!), I asked around to many of
the lofts in Maryland. Finally decided on a new dacron main and 155 genoa. We
race in mostly light air, so the genoa is good to about 15-18 apparent, then it
just heels the boat over too much. The ex-admiral and her crew won our
Wednesday night B class that year.

The sails now have 2 years on them and she is still the fastest "racer-cruiser"
for most races (depends on crew). Only gets beat by a couple of lightweights.

And, the sails still look good - and the sailmaker says if they get baggy, we
can trim them back to shape for a lot less than a new sail - couldn't do that
with the laminates.and they were quite a bit less money. We can race and
cruise them for a couple more years and then maybe trim them or replace them
and still be ahead financially. To be honest, I don't cruise with the 155, it
is just too big - blocks the view. The sailmakers opinion (a few of them) is
that a laminate will stay in shape until it fails - completely, while a dacron
will slowly decrease in shape over time.

Just my opinion - the new dacrons are pretty good.

  Hi Edd,
Why not ask for a price from UK? They must be your closest sailmaker and
repairs should be less on their own sails?

All of Resolute's racing sails are UK sails, Kevlar Edge, from 1997 and 1998,
but have some life left in them since they were used only two seasons by the PO
and haven't raced. We did use the main for three seasons and it died a nasty
death last fall, when a whole upper panel delaminated.

I intend to buy a top quality dacron main, for all around use.
I'll use a roller furled 144% genoa, and save the bigger 155% genoas for
racing when fully crewed.

North is closest to me and quoted some new sails. Their salesman convinced
me to go up a notch for Radian since it will hold it's shape better and last
longer than crosscut. Another lister recommends going up another notch in
price to Norlam, a laminated sail. I'm not sure what's the best sail for me.
I got numbers from UK and will ask Quantum and Doyle.

Stus-List new sails

2013-02-24 Thread Chuck S
Hi Edd,
Why not ask for a price from UK? They must be your closest sailmaker and
repairs should be less on their own sails?

All of Resolute's racing sails are UK sails, Kevlar Edge, from 1997 and 1998,
but have some life left in them since they were used only two seasons by the PO
and haven't raced. We did use the main for three seasons and it died a nasty
death last fall, when a whole upper panel delaminated.

I intend to buy a top quality dacron main, for all around use.
