Stus-List Overpriced surveyors
Roger: Five (5) years later our boat was surveyed again for insurance purposesthe local surveyor was recommended by a fellow CC listerthe day of the survey, I met him at the boat.when he was checking the deck, coach roof, topsides, etc.he left the boat and went to his car to get another, newer moisture meter...said his old one must be wrong as he could not find a wet spot anywhere on a +25 year old boat. He didn't find any wet spots with his new moisture meter. While he was down in the lazarret taking pictures of everything, including the steering system, he had me turn the wheel hard over from side to side.when I did it he was yelling at me to do it harder, harder.I didn't want to do it harder as I thought I was going to break something. I did it hard enough to satisfy him, he stopped yelling at me. When he crawled out, he said that was the whole point of the exerciseto make sure the nothing will break if the wheel gets turned over hard. This surveyor said to me that he never gives a +25 year old boat a 'clean bill of health'ours was no different.he suggested we replace the exhaust hose from the muffler back to the transom. He was right.there were wet spots evident from the outside that meant the hard wall inside was breaking down.when I took the old hose out I cut it open where the wet spots were evident on the outside, the hose was breaking down from the inside. As I said previously, tell me what I need to hear, not what I want to hear.e.g. nice gelcoat, nice shine, nice bimini. versus CO leaking from a rotten exhaust hose. This local surveyor is the equivalent of Peter Kronich..he too is a naval architect.he built himself an absolutely beautiful 40' sail boat. You would feel confident taking this boat up and down any coast. Years ago, I hired a surveyor in Toronto to find me a Kirby 25.he rejected 8 hulls that he went to see and charged me for one complete survey on a boat that in the end, he did not actually survey. He put me in contact with a K25 owner that was thinking of selling his boat..the K25 was owned by a co-owner of Bruckmann Yachts in Mississauga, Ontario who had the boat completely rebuilt in the Bruckmann shop to race it. It was probably better than it was when new. We campaigned the K25 for 6 years and, this is too funny, we sold it back to the owner we bought it from for the same price we paid for it.he missed racing and heard we had put the K25 up for sale and he wanted it back. So I guess you might say I have had good fortune with marine surveyors. Rob Abbott AZURA CC 32 - 84 Halifax, N.S. Stus-List Overpriced?
There is a buyer for everything, at the right price. When we were looking for a boat in 2005-06, there were three (3) CC 32's for sale here in Halifax, N.S...looked at them all. Looked at a CC 30 MKI and Mirage 32 here as well. Ended up buying our boat from Racine Riverside Marina, Racine, Wisconsin.one owner, professionally maintained, adequately equipped, fresh water boat. The purchase price, exchange rate and transportation cost to truck it here cost us approx. $8,000 less than what we would have paid for any of the local boats. We also got a new 10' Zodiac thrown in. And I have sold 3 sails that came with the boat that I will never use. I never traveled to Racine to view the boat.paid a surveyor about $350 USD for a 23 page reportthat was the selling point, the survey. I would do that no matter where I was buying a boat. I understand many buyers would never do what we did, buy a boat unseen so far away. Would I do it again, absolutely. I wish this 32 seller well.if he gets close to his asking price, it bodes well for all us CC owners. Rob Abbott AZURA CC 32 - 84 Halifax, N.S. In central Canada here there is not much option for buying used sailboats. The market is not saturated by any means and the stock of quality used boats available is thin. This usually means pay what the owner wants oroutsource to the south and pay for exchange, shipping, border brokerage, flights to and from the location, permits and lots of survey charges. When you total it all up the prices end up being fairly close to what Bowline typically charges. Then add to that there is the comfort level of knowing the history of the local boats, their owners and background. Furtherto that, our season is short so all of these boats are out of water for 7 months of the year. The boats are in fresh water the remaining 5 and onLake of the Woods there's little swell to speak of even in storms. The biggest hazard is grounding and unfortunately most sailboats there have touched bottom. The remainder will some day. The rigs although 30 plus years old show no corrosion or acid rain pitting. Gener ally outside of wet decks or blisters, a 35 year old boat is in 20 year old condition if it was decently maintained. I agree that $65000 for an 84 32 is very high but the price will appealto those who want a quick painless purchase with background confidence of a quality fresh water boat. It may include a slip too which at my harbour is impossible to get now. I would expect a fair bit of negotiation will bring it closer to reality as well. Re: Stus-List Overpriced
My experience was the same. I picked the surveyor and made sure that he worked for me (not the boatyard or the seller). In fact I picked two. The first time, the surveyor called me from the boat (he did not even wait until he got home) at told me to run as quickly as I can; so I did. The second time, a different surveyor (different boat, different place) did a very thorough survey, pointed a few things that may require attention, put together a 25 page report with a ton of pictures (including things that needed attention) and in a conversation recommended to buy. So I did (sight unseen). I am glad that I did (both buy the boat and hire the surveyor). I chose the surveyor myself from the US Accredited Marine Surveyors (probably got their association name wrong, but you all know what I am talking about) . I had a completely different experience than you did, maybe because my surveyor 'did not have the seller's interest in mind'. My surveyor had my interests in mind. I made sure of that! Sounds like yours did not. Sorry to hear that, you will know better next time around. Rob Abbott AZURA CC 32 - 84 Halifax, N.S. Message-ID:544e676a.5000...@eastlink.ca Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed There is a buyer for everything, at the right price. Re: Stus-List Overpriced?
Dan, That's a great deal on a 25 w a trailer. Wish you many great sailing days in the future. Some advice: Make it a point to get your boat sailing as soon as possible, so you can enjoy what she was designed for. So many project boats become eternal projects, the owner loses time, money or ambition and the boat lives on a trailer, neglected until it becomes junk. So make sailing your focus when planning your projects and don't get caught up in overhauling everything; clean her up, check the sails, get all the hardware cleaned and lubed, replace any frayed halyards, sheets, hoses. Prioritize projects into those that make the boat safe and seaworthy first, get your new required Coast Guard stuff like flares and life jackets, fix any rigging problems, service engine, service trailer wheel bearings, etc. Plan where to launch her and checkout marinas, ramps, and cruising destinations over the winter. But work to splash the boat as soon as the ice melts in the Spring. Will you be getting a slip? Keeping her on the trailer? It will change your life. The 32' boat appears to be turnkey ready to go, but w a very high asking price. It's probably worth every penny, but won't ever sell for that price. I bought our boat for half of her listed price. The PO got enough money to pay off his loan, but had a huge yard bill for storage. I have a lot of sweat and money invested into my boat after 12 years, but doubt I will ever get what I paid for it and the next owner will definitely get a better deal than I got. There are so many discounted boats on the market, it will be hard to get what she's worth. The hard reality is that storing a boat for 6 years at a good marina, and keeping the insurance, maintaining a cover, can cost as much as the final selling price. HI Dan, Welcome to the list, sure wish I had a trailer with my 25. I’ve gone through what you are about to undertake, message me directly with your questions and I’ll answer them as best as I can. I’ve had mine since ’99 and re-built her up from a similar state and can give you some hints and tips on what is important to fix now and what can wait. I can also give you some tips on setting up the rigging in the spring. When I repaired and re-finished my deck I removed every piece of hardware and relocated them where it was easiest for me to sail the boat. As a result I can single hand the boat really easily and competitively race double-handed. I agree with Chuck, you’ve got to get her in the water next spring to start enjoying the boat. Re: Stus-List Overpriced?
I'll chime in on this as Bowline Yachts was the broker for my boat back when I bought it and I know the owner well. At first glance the prices they ask seem high and become the frequent talk at the club but with respect to the company's owner I'll provide a little insight to explain though not necessarily justify the prices. In central Canada here there is not much option for buying used sailboats. The market is not saturated by any means and the stock of quality used boats available is thin. This usually means pay what the owner wants or outsource to the south and pay for exchange, shipping, border brokerage, flights to and from the location, permits and lots of survey charges. When you total it all up the prices end up being fairly close to what Bowline typically charges. Then add to that there is the comfort level of knowing the history of the local boats, their owners and background. Further to that, our season is short so all of these boats are out of water for 7 months of the year. The boats are in fresh water the remaining 5 and on Lake of the Woods there's little swell to speak of even in storms. The biggest hazard is grounding and unfortunately most sailboats there have touched bottom. The remainder will some day. The rigs although 30 plus years old show no corrosion or acid rain pitting. Gene rally outside of wet decks or blisters, a 35 year old boat is in 20 year old condition if it was decently maintained. I agree that $65000 for an 84 32 is very high but the price will appeal to those who want a quick painless purchase with background confidence of a quality fresh water boat. It may include a slip too which at my harbour is impossible to get now. I would expect a fair bit of negotiation will bring it closer to reality as well. We bought our boat in 2006 for half that price and it was a well maintained, fresh water, one owner boat. The listings at that site are frequently sky high compared to comparable listings in place like Northern Michigan, Duluth Minnesota etc etc On Sat, Oct 25, 2014 at 1:11 PM, Robert Abbott via CnC-List cnc-list@cnc-list.com wrote: While I think this appears to be a nicely equipped and well maintained boat, I think the owner is overly optimistic with his asking price. Re: Stus-List Overpriced?
I just bought my fist boat, it's a 1975 CC 25 mk1. Some wet core. Turned out to be not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I have done a few repairs on sailboats before so I was ready to tackle the challenge. Hopefully everything turns out ok. Lots of prior neglect from the previous owner. It's been on the hard for 6 years. Hopefully I will have it ready for spring. If anyone has experience with this boat or any info on this boat would be great thanks. I picked it up for 1,200 with a trailer. I couldn't pass it up, hope its worth my Time and effort. Just trying to keep the classics alive. I'm from duluth mn.
