Stus-List Re: 2-way headsets?

2021-07-29 Thread Della Barba, Joe via CnC-List

They are not very good radios.
I have a few and while they do work, the tone squelch has an annoying time
delay and the receivers are wide open and subject to intermod. I would NOT use
one for anything critical at all, but they are great for things where you might
lose one overboard or otherwise damage it.
Do remember that the vast majority of them are NOT legal for what they get used
for and come with frequencies NOT legal for what they get used for either. The
former is not that big a deal but the latter can very much be.

Keep in mind that people who are making these devices are earning about $3/day.
The biggest cost is shipping and distribution.

Enough of the rant.

The only thing I have found short of manufacturing something would be a FRS

Our anchoring (and our marriage) has benefitted from Cruising Solutions two-way
headsets for 6 or 7 years. The modest ~$80/pair units were great ... but are
getting wonky, and I'm looking at replacements. Everything on the market looks
more sophisticated, and a LOT more expensive, at ~ $350 to ~$800 per pair.

Anyone have a modest-priced solution?

I bought some Baofeng UHF walkies with headsets, belt clips, 2each… cost $45
for the pair with shipping and headsets. Got them off of Tophatter.
http://www.tophatter.com . Small, lightweight, good range, good on batteries,
lots of frequencies. I was using my cellphone and earbuds before that – that
doesn’t work real well offshore 😊

Our Radio Shack headsets finally bit the dust. We got a set of Sena blutooth
that work great. A little pricier than the old RS ones but man do they work
better once you figure them out. We found them through Boat Galley.  Ted.
