They are not very good radios. I have a few and while they do work, the tone squelch has an annoying time delay and the receivers are wide open and subject to intermod. I would NOT use one for anything critical at all, but they are great for things where you might lose one overboard or otherwise damage it. Do remember that the vast majority of them are NOT legal for what they get used for and come with frequencies NOT legal for what they get used for either. The former is not that big a deal but the latter can very much be.
