Re: Stus-List Refinishing cabin floor

2020-07-13 Thread rockland bazemore via CnC-List
Hi all, for making new floorboards for a laminate I was thinking of 3/4"
marine ply with coats of epoxy after getting to the right size. Then using
epoxy to attach the laminate. Would love to keep them as light as
possible but still waterproof. Is there a better way to go on this?
thanks!

Re: Stus-List Refinishing cabin floor

2020-07-08 Thread bwhitmore via CnC-List
Keep in mind folks that this is a sink in the fore cabin which is only used by
guests,  and to the best of my knowledge, the sink has never been used other
than to test it.  There is a galley sink 7 ft. away, as is the sink in the
head.  If it turns out to be much more expensive, I might keep the seacock, but
having one I can't really access goes against my grain.  I could, in the
alternative, put a second back in and simply leave it shut off. However, as long
as the drain hose goes in the sump where the bilge pump draws from, any limited
water that went down that sink would be quickly and easily pumped
overboard.Just weighing my options,BruceSent from Samsung tablet.

Hi Ken,

That is certainly an option, but I was thinking about simply blocking it off
because as of now, I have two batteries up under the forward bench.
Realistically, I won't pull
out the batteries to open & close the seacock on any regular basis, and if it
or the hose ever fails, it will be nearly impossible to get to.  As it is, we
don't use the sink anyway.

I don't like the idea of a seacock I can't access, yet I like using that area
for an extra house battery.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm OK with just letting it drain into the bilge and
putting a small sticker there to inform people not to use the sink for anything
other than washing
 hands or brushing teeth.

At least that's what I'm thinking for now,

A word to the wise re lonseal--I was thinking of this as a DIY project

recommended, I bailed and had a yard do it.
Although lonseal claims  you can use epoxy/West System, their own glue has a
maximum drying time of 30 minutes plus they recommended that their glue be
mixed all at once to insure the proper ratio.
Given the size and number of my sole boards, the yard put 2 workers on it and
barely got it done in the time limit(~30 minutes). Since the product itself
(Defender was least expensive) cost about 6 boat bucks, it was not something to
waste.
YMMV

Hi Edd,
As it turns out, the quote on the damage to Astralis from the jetski is now
just over $21,000 not including the dinghy, and the boat won't get in for
repair until the 29th.

During that time, I want them to redo the bottom and pull the forward sink
seacock that is frozen and glass over it.  I plan on just having the forward
sink drain into the bilge or tee it off to the galley sink drain.  I will also
have them replace the cutlass bearing.

So, it might make sense to use that time to bring all the boards home and apply
lonseal if I like it.
Might as well try to kill as many birds at one time as possible.  :(

Bruce,

Grey water is not great for the bilge. There is a reason why boats properly
plumbed, send their shower water and icebox water (also grey water) over the

Hi Ken,

That is certainly an option, but I was thinking about simply blocking it off
because as of now, I have two batteries up under the forward bench.
Realistically, I won't pull out the batteries to open & close the seacock on
any regular basis, and if it or the hose ever fails, it will be nearly
impossible to get to. As it is, we don't use the sink anyway.

I don't like the idea of a seacock I can't access, yet I like using that area
for an extra house battery.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm OK with just letting it drain into the bilge and
putting a small sticker there to inform people not to use the sink for anything
other than washing hands or brushing teeth.

At least that's what I'm thinking for now,

$21,000? Ouch. I’ll be flipping off JetSki’ers for the rest of the season now

Between all the cut-outs, finger holes, screw holes and lining up the stripes,
I think I’m better off with a pro installer.

All,
I am now seriously considering a vinyl teak-and-holly covering that will be

I wouldn't consider anything but Epiphanes gloss varnish for the cabin sole.
When wet it’s no more slippery than any other finish and the color is gorgeous
while durability is as good as anything else. That’s what I put on my 40 (8
coats from bare wood) and after five years it still looked lovely. It’s on
Masquerade, too.

Re concerns on traction, after refinishing the floors with a gloss, I was
concerned about traction but this has not been an issue for me even when
the floor is wet. I'm not sure satin or gloss finishes are really that
different in terms of traction. On my boat, rubber soled shoes grip great
at any heeling level and barefoot is not bad.

I sail on a lake where we don't have heavy seas though. Offshore / Great
Lakes boats might want to paint some light level of non-skid in
regardless of the finish? Apparently there used to be a product called
Ultimate Sole that was meant for this application. Not sure what is out
there that is equivalent now.

I tried something different on the floors. After lightly sanding, I used 2
coats of Topcoat epoxy on the floors and then a floor polyurethane gloss above
that for hardness and UV protection. I get lots of compliments as the floors
looks glossy and wet. A coat of Topcoat is something like 60 coats of varnish,
at least per Topcoat's advertisement on the packaging.

I've had the floors in place for a year now and no issues.

Topcoat is inexpensive for epoxy at $60 for a gallon at Home Depot and is made
for table tops and the like. It made for a beautiful and thick clear coat over
the original flooring. I need to do one thin coat over the bottom of the
boards now too.

My only lesson learned is to seal the floors before applying Topcoat.
Otherwise, you risk small bubbles. Those drove me nuts and I ended up sanding
and re-applying to try to avoid. I learned later that sealing the wood first
would have made the most difference. I tried a torch to remove bubbles and had
only limited success.
