Re: Stus-List Replacing top rudder bearing

2014-10-26 Thread Jake Brodersen via CnC-List
Joel,

A shim under the quadrant would be the best way to hold the rudder in place.
Depending on how close your rudder quadrant is to the rudder tube, it may not
drop much. I know access back there is horrible, but it is the best way to go.
Running a line under the rudder would be my second choice. Keep it tight.
The wet line is going to stretch a bit.

All,

My new Delrin bearing for the top of the rudder post is ready.

The boat is staying in the water. Do I need run a line under the rudder to the
stern cleats before I loosen the retaining ring? Or should I put a shim under
the quadrant to limit the drop?

Do I need anything besides allen wrenches and a strap wrench?

As always, thanks for the advice!

My retaining ring has pipe wrench marks on it too. I doubt a strap will do
the trick. Good luck!

Re: Stus-List Replacing top rudder bearing

2014-10-26 Thread Joel Aronson via CnC-List
Its done!!

My rudder post was not threaded, so I ran a line under the rudder. As Jake
predicted, the rudder barely moved. Had to buy a pipe wrench to loosen the
ring. The bearing was not in bad shape, but I feel better having the new
one in place. The bonus was that it was much easier to tighten the
stuffing box with the new wrench!

They made up two bearings. If anyone wants the extra, let me know off list.

Thanks for the advice!

Blowing 23 with gust to 28. Temp in the mid 60s. Might have to go for a
sail!

2014-10-24 Thread Graham Collins via CnC-List
When I recently dropped my rudder I found the retaining ring needed
serious encouragement to come off, had to put a pipe wrench to it. The
strap wrench did not do it at all.

Hope yours is more free than that. Apply lubrication liberally!
