The 12 Gallon was immediately in front of the Head, on the side, so,
Asymmetrical.
I replaced it with a 39 Gallon Symmetrical Kracor that fit nearly perfectly in
the bow under the V Berth.

I love your question and look forward to responses. We, on our 33-1 are
looking at the same issue. In our case we have had no real holding tank (a 6
gallon job which was never used) but have used an electro-scan Type 1 Marine
Sanitation Device. As Puget Sound in now a no discharge zone we need to
choose our next system. The composting head sounds like an interesting
option but I too would like to here what others have experienced. They are
not cheap but neither is a custom made holding tank. I’ve looked at the many
prefabricated tanks and have not found one which would fit our situation.

I routed the 2-inch exhaust hose to exit on the forward outboard section of the
cockpit coaming. This required that I use a shield to prevent green water from
splashing into the hose. I mounted the fan around the corner from the vent
location. I had to use a little more hose than was normally supplied and I had
to move up to a slightly larger fan because of the longer hose.

Keep in mind that you should completely clean it out before storing for the
winter—therefore 24/7 electricity is not required in the winter.

Re: Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

2018-10-01 Thread Shawn Wright via CnC-List
You might be surprised about winter solar performance. I'm in BC, and my
brother's place on the gulf islands just got a 4kW solar system installed,
with 900W of panels. The standby consumption of the inverter is about 10W
(not bad considering the 4kW output). But what I was most surprised was
that we were seeing 100W of power from the panels even during the days of
full cloud cover and heavy rain in early September. I would assume the
small 12V fan in a toilet will draw less than 1W, and if you have an
efficient solar inverter/charging system, it may not be a problem even in
the dark days of winter.
When we do find a boat, I'll definitely be investigating a composting
toilet, along with a solar system.

Re: Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

2018-09-30 Thread Chris Graham via CnC-List
I used an airhead on my Vega many years ago. Definitely not cheap and it was
huge, a bit unsightly as it was placed in a tight space, but no odor, I picked
up a ton of storage when the tank was removed. The newer models are just as
expensive but far more compact now that they have discovered the marine market.
No more holes in the boat which is a great relief to me. I think I paid close
to $700 on my model 10 years or so ago? If I get the C&C I’m looking at this
fall. I will more than likely move on another composting toilet. Not 100%
maintenance free, but way less work than the standard heads.

I love your question and look forward to responses. We, on our 33-1 are looking
at the same issue. In our case we have had no real holding tank (a 6 gallon job
which was never used) but have used an electro-scan Type 1 Marine Sanitation
Device. As Puget Sound in now a no discharge zone we need to choose our next
system. The composting head sounds like an interesting option but I too would
like to here what others have experienced. They are not cheap but neither is a
custom made holding tank. I’ve looked at the many prefabricated tanks and have
not found one which would fit our situation.

Stus-List Composting head in 33-2?

Has anyone installed a composting head in a 33 or similar?
Have been contemplating replacement of my stench-impregnated holding tank and

Very tempting for many reasons, plus a huge gain in interior space below the
v-berth.
my only concern is size of the unit itself and I wonder if anyone has already

Re: Stus-List composting head

2016-05-10 Thread Dr. Mark Bodnar via CnC-List

I put in a composting head last year.  Really like it.  I will
admit it adds a bit of an extra challenge when having guests
because you need to explain the process a little --- but not
really that much different that a manual toilet that requires a
lesson for toilet use.  Some people find it a little "gross".
I put in a Natures Head.  Works well.  No flies in the first
year.  Less smell than my old toilet.  I've not yet completely
removed my old hoses - as I wanted to make sure before I removed
  the seacocks.

One suggestion (that I have yet to employ) is to put a small 12V
pump (say a car windshield washer fluid pump) on a switch to pump
the liquids out of the small tank and into the sink drain pipe.
That solve the problem of carrying a jug of urine around and
  dumping it.

Stus-List composting head

2016-05-10 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List
It may depend how much you use it and your regional climate.

I know that many composting devotees praise the system however, 2
neighboring boats have one and both kinda wish they didn't.

On one boat it's a live aboard couple, the PO (Whom installed the
composting head because he had found it for almost nothing, tried it /
liked it) they say that the smell is not necessary an issue but having to
frequently drain the liquid stuff and the occasional fly issues is grating
on their nerves. They would prefer to pump and may reconvert the boat.

The other boat is a single guy, hard core live aboard with all the latest
ideas on his boat and he's also complaining about flies "if you don't stay
on top of it with the wet and dry balance" whatever that means. In any
case, he thought it would be ideal as he's contemplating getting off the
lake for extended cruising, now he's questioning if that was such a great
idea..

Here's a link on fly and other issues..

We also had an Airhead on our 26. Loved it so much it moved with us to the
Pearson 424.
It has some idiosyncrasies (nothing major) but being able to live life without
sewer plumbing in a boat is WELL worth it.

I have an AirHead-brand composting toilet and it works great!  We've had it for
almost a year now.  I have written two blog posts on it if you are interested.
No odors whatsoever!!!
