Mine is set up like Josh's with no mirror over the engine, but one to the port
side of the aft cabin engine area.  However, the mirrors in the head are
definitely glass, as one is cracked in one corner.
In Tampa I find the A/C keeps up, but runs a lot to keep the interior
comfortable.

thinking I could install AC unit in the space below companionway steps.  This

Chris,

As a general rule, diesels like to be worked. Keeping them at idle or low-RPM
speeds is not good for them in the long run. I usually only keep the throttle
down when shifting in and out of neutral or if I need to go slow in a channel,
coming into a dock. or picking up a mooring.

Re: Stus-List PYI shaft seal

2018-10-22 Thread schiller via CnC-List

All,

I spent the last 15 years of my career in the aircraft hydraulic pump
business.  We used the PYI type face seals for all of our pumps,
electric motor pumps and hydraulic motor driven generators.  Many of the
older units used the carbon graphite nose pieces.  The newer units use
Tungsten Carbide nose pieces.  These seals have a life of about 30,000
hours (the carbon graphite have a life of about 10,000 hours) running at
speeds of 2,000 to 12,000 rpm at 35,000 foot altitude.  At these speeds
we try to control leakage to 5 drops per hour in hydraulic oils.  Our
boat environments are a little easier.  That being said, what the carbon
graphite nose pieces hate is shock and misalignment.  We controlled
flatness on the pieces to .70 inches (6 helium light bands).

Our last boat (C 35-1) had an old style (no vent tube) for 16 years
with no problems.  Burped it on launch and it worked great.  Just put a
PYI Packless Shaft Seal in our new boat (C 35-3).

We have a lot of places on the boat that can allow the water outside to
come in.  This is just one other.

Jim:

Running the hot water for 10 or 15 minutes should get rid of any air bubble in
the water system but I don't think this is the problem.

There should be a check valve in the high-pressure water line to separate the
cold water supply from the hot water from the tank--check the functioning of
this check valve. (Refer to Raritan water heater installation instructions for
more info on this check valve.)

Another thing you might want to check is the accumulator tank.

Sounds like lots of air in the Hot Water Tank to me, which drives hot water
backwards out of the tank into the cold water lines when you turn the cold
tap on.

I'd think you should be able to blead the air out through the new blo-off
valve as it should be the highest thing on the tank.

Did you have the water lines disconnected from the tank and possibly
reconnected them backwards? The dip tube for the cold water inlet could
cause an air bubble in the tank if the lines are connected backward.

Fred,

I was with Glenn on our first race with the Raymarine Axiom 9.  We were
fine until full darkness when the screen brightness overwhelmed Glenn to
the point that he became disoriented.  We literally turned circles in
front of a freighter until we could get the brightness down and regained
our night vision.  It seemed like we were doing fine until, suddenly, we
were unable to compensate for the brightness.  We were used to my Garmin
276C (that we had used for the previous couple of years) that
automatically goes into night mode at sundown.  The GPS knows when local
sundown is, it's not that difficult to program a night mode.

My Garmin plotters have two different colour schemes AND two different
display brightness settings, one colour and brightness for day, and the
other for night. It switches automatically between these settings at sun
set / sunrise.

Chris — once you’ve decided on a make/model but before you purchase,
please email me — as you’re new to the list, you probably aren’t aware
of this, but I used to design and install marine electronics and
electrical systems for a living. I’ve kept my vendor relationships
active, and offer discount pricing (pretty much dealer cost) to people
on the C list as a courtesy. I can get most manufacturers’ gear (not
B…) at good pricing; for instance, your cost on the lowest-end
Raymarine Axiom 7” plotter with Navionics+ US/Canada charts would be
$780.00 plus shipping (list $899.99). Email me off-list.

Hi Chris, On my girlfriend's boat, she has the same engine. When starting we
set the throttle to about 1/4 to 1/3 then start cranking. Sometimes I'll engage
the compression release to get the engine spinning a little faster (about 10
secs) then release it. Another thing we do is flush the engine with fresh water
before putting the boat to bed. Hope this helps.

I have a quick question about the specifics of starting a Yanmar SB8 single
cylinder engine. The previous owner also disconnected the kill switch and
turned off the engine with the key so i want to reattach the cable this spring.
Is there a specific amount of throttle to set it at prior to turning it over? I
think I remember by old Volvo-Penta had to be positioned at 3/4 open and then
immediately dropped down to idle once the engine turned over.
anything special I need to know? No real information out there and the old

Stus-List Water heater weirdness

2018-10-22 Thread Jim Watts via CnC-List
I'm baffled. Maybe someone here can figure this out.
A few weeks ago, I replaced the leaking overpressure/overtemperature valve
on our old Raritan water heater, and ever since, the pressure water pump
acts very oddly. It starts out sounding normal, then as the pressure builds
it is obviously working harder and slower, until finally it stops. When I
open the hot water tap, the water runs for quite a while before the pump
kicks in, whereas it used to come on almost instantaneously. In addition,
when I open the taps after motoring, the cold water tap is providing very
hot water for the first 10-15 seconds.
Yesterday I tried running the system dry then refilling the tank but it
didn't seem to help. My best guess is that there is an air bubble in the
tank somehow and the pump is compressing the air, so it takes longer to
reach pressure and then the pressure bleeds off while the tap is open.
Any bright ideas on how I might fix this?

Re: Stus-List Air conditioner placement

2018-10-22 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Our 1990 37/40 has plastic mirrors in the head and aft cabin (they look
like glass) with no frames surrounding them on the head cabinet doors. The
head cabinet mirrors cover the entire surface of the doors and there are
narrow mirror filler strips above the doors as well. I've noticed the 1993
and later 37/40's have smaller mirrors in frames on the upper cabinet doors
in the head so perhaps they switched back to glass with those?

There's lots of room and everybody is welcome, but with 10 couples coming I
think 20 people might be a little tight Edd!

Here’s a post from Wal Bryant on Stella Blue (Landfall 38) in Mexico (posted

I've sailed my boat through 20 foot seas, and used the EFF word a few times.
Having them hit shallow water and slam into the breakwater will be something to
watch. I think it's entirely possible that waves will wash over the breakwater
into the marina. The breakwater itself is relatively new, and hasn't filled in
with sand and sediment. When there is surge outside, boats inside still move

Stus-List Looking for a cruising chute

2018-10-22 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,

I am looking for a asymmetrical cruising spinnaker for a 1994 C 37/40+
(centerboard version).  Per the specs, the I = 52', the J=16', and measuring
from a full hoist with the spinnaker halyard to the attachment at the foot
yields 53'8", and to the top of the lifelines is 51'10".
Does anyone have such a sail they'd like to part with?
If not, which of the used sail consignment shops do you recommend?
Thanks!!!
