[cobirds] Harlan's Hawk - BCGB - Jefferson County

2009-12-05 Thread mike
I spotted a Harlan's Hawk this morning in the Bear Creek Greenbelt
area near the Stone House. Same area has had a Harlan's the past few
years. From the intersection of W. Yale Avenue and S. Estes Street,
the bird hangs out in the area south of Yale and east of Estes. From
the Stone House, the bird is usually to the north and east.

[cobirds] Barr Lake Long-tailed Duck

2009-12-05 Thread William H Kaempfer
Todd Deininger and I enjoyed a trip from Valmont Reservoir (100% open)
to Barr Lake (30% open) and back today. Best bird was a Long-tailed
Duck at Barr which had several thousand ducks present. Valmont was also
well populated but with nothing super rare. Driving past the road
closed signs on 95th St. to Boulder Creek produced 3 American Pipits, 3
Killdeer and a Wilson's Snipe. We also enjoyed the gulls mentioned by
Walter S. on Thomas.

[cobirds] Tundra swans (?) at Big Johnson reservoir in Colorado Springs

2009-12-05 Thread kickback
I saw 9 birds which I think are Tundra swans and got the following
picture of some of them. All nine seemed to be sleeping so I was
unable to get any head shots, they were very far away.

[cobirds] Tundra Swans still at Lake McIntosh: Boulder County

2009-12-05 Thread Bryan Guarente
All seven of the Tundra Swans reported by Mark Miller earlier today are still
present as of 1:30. I got plenty of diagnostic photos showing at least 4 of
the birds being Tundras. The other three birds were mostly sleeping so it was
hard to get photos of the yellow spot on the bill, but all birds were checked
and all of them were Tundra Swans.

I will try to post some photos later this evening.

[cobirds] Boulder Northern Shrike and lat./long. redux

2009-12-05 Thread Ted Floyd

Hello, Birders.

Not an earthshattering rarity, but I saw a Northern Shrike at Greenlee
Preserve, Boulder County, yesterday afternoon, Friday, Dec. 4th.

Now, every once in a while, I get asked the age-old question, Where's that?
Or, Okay, I know where Greenlee Preserve is, but where, more or less, was the
bird?

Well, with Google Maps, you can show the exact location of the bird. It's this
simple:

http://tiny.cc/4wxmc

The blue stickpin indicates the small tree the bird was perched on.

For a small and fairly familiar site like Greenlee, you could probably get away
with From Denver, travel west on U.S. 36 to the second exit for U.S. 287, go
north on U.S. 287, [blah, blah, blah, lots of steps deleted], park your car,
walk east then south along the unmarked trail for about 200 feet, bear right at
the fork in the trail, proceed straight at the four-way inters... Puh-leeze.
That is so 2004. It's 2009, almost 2010. And if you're trying to describe a
bird somewhere around John Martin Reservoir or the San Luis Hills,
fuhgeddaboudit.

It's so easy just to say: Northern Shrike, http://tiny.cc/4wxmc

(Same thing can be accomplished with latitude and longitude; this is my olive
branch to those who are visual learners.)

[cobirds] Harris's Sparrow, Delta County, Dec 5

2009-12-05 Thread Jason Beason
About 1 pm I saw a first winter Harris's Sparrow in my yard today. The bird
was associating with juncos in the chicken yard eating cracked corn. I left
to go for a walk right after spotting it and haven't seen it since I
returned. I also saw a late/possibly overwintering Say's Phoebe on the
walk. This is at least the fourth time I have seen Harris's Sparrow in my
yard, but it has been two years or so since the last one.

Also, I recently discovered that my yard will be on the southwest Colorado
Birding Trail when that is officially opened. Anyone is welcomed to stop by
if you just happened to be in Poania! Warning: you may be asked to help dig
potatoes or harvest zucchini if we are out working in the fields.

[cobirds] Trumpeter Swan at Pueblo Reservoir 12/05

2009-12-05 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Hi all,

A juvenile Trumpeter Swan was seen by several people at Pueblo Reservoir this
afternoon.  It was in the middle of the reservoir, off North Picnic
Road/Juniper Breaks Campground.  Five photos of it can be seen at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/

Other highlights today at Pueblo Reservoir was the adult Great Black-backed
Gull at the South Shore Marina tires.

Eariler this morning, David Chartier and I found quite a few birds in the north
east part of Pueblo City Park, which included a Golden-crowned Kinglet, several
Yellow-rumped Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Mountain Chickadees, Brown
Creepers, and Red-breasted Nuthatches.

Good birding,

Brandon Percival

[cobirds] Marston Reservoir, Denver County

2009-12-05 Thread Tina Jones

I hit Marston Reservoir real late this afternoon.

One blue morph Snow Goose, along with the usual waterbirds were present at the
lake. The Snow Goose arrived on the west side of the lake around 4:15pm,
accompanied by 100's of Canada Geese. About 50 Cackling Geese were present.

Present also were : Ring-necked Duck, Ruddy Duck, Lesser Scaup, Gadwall,
American Widgeon, Northern Shoveler, Canvasback, Common Goldeneye. There were
lots of Hooded Merganser, and Common Merganser, Mallard, Bufflehead, and
American Coot. One Red-tailed Hawk stood on a telephone pole. I did not have
time to look at alot of Marston's birds.

Happy Birding!
