[cobirds] Snow Goose and at home Tuesday
Hi cobirders. Tuesday at 1:25 pm going south on Colorado Blvd passing George F. Clayton College on the right I saw a small flock of Canada Geese with one adult SNOW GOOSE in the middle feeding near the street. FOYR for me. In the morning at my feeders were busy with a variety of House Finches. One with a white patch in top of head and another on the back with no color. (leucosystic) sp.? It first came in fall of 2011 and this past fall, It only shows up for a day or two at a time. With them was a male Cassin's Finch . Fun to get new birds for the year. [cobirds] Denver and Adams Co. Goodies - Rusty Blackbirds, Night Herons, RB Mergs, etc.
Hi CoBirders -- Great day for bird-biking yesterday. Saw 9 Rusty Blackbirds with David Dowell at reported location along S. Platte River just north of the I-270 overpass. A few hundred yards upstream from the confluence with Sand Creek were five Black-crowned Night Herons (3 ad., 2 juv.) just hanging out low in a tree below the bike path. At Sloans Lake I saw a Red-breasted Merganser and a Canvasback, among others (no hybrid goose). Along the South Platte River between Confluence Park and Globeville Landing I saw four more Red-breasted Mergansers (3 m., 1 f.). Two days ago I got a haircut from a low-flying Brown Creeper in front of East High School. Today I saw a Northern Shrike at Bluff Lake. Great weather for birding, Chris Rurik Denver, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Hoary Redpoll - Discovery Museum - Ft. Collins - Larimer Co
Birders, Having received 2 calls this morning telling me I need to get to Ft. Collins to see the above mentioned bird that was seen and photographed by several birders yesterday, I made the dash and low and behold there are in fact, 2 or more Hoary Redpolls at the Discovery Museum in Ft. Collins on Cherry St. just west of College. I was surprised that no one posted this yesterday. And just as icing on the cake, I finally found the Dipper that has been reported so frequently at Lowell Blvd and 55th on Clear Creek. The I 25 corridor has quite a few raptors including Golden Eagle (just north of HWY 7), 2 adult Bald Eagles (one was perched on a power pole) on the east side of I 25 just north of HWY 7, Kestrel, Rough-legged, Red-tailed and Ferruginous Hawks (at Longmont). [cobirds] Re: Hoary Redpoll - Discovery Museum - Ft. Collins - Larimer Co
Birders. The situation at the museum with the windows behind the feeders is not good. And sure enough, while we were there, a redpoll hit the window. The bird is still alive but has moderate head trauma and is now on route to a wildlife hospital. I urge people to contact the museum about putting up window alert stickers or at least some post it notes to prevent incidents. [cobirds] Northern Pygmy-Owl, Lefthand Canyon, 1/8
A paltry seven species on the ebird list for my afternoon jaunt to Ward (Boulder County) -- and my target birds, rosy-finches, did not appear. But a Northern Pygmy-Owl was a fine consolation prize. It was haughtily surveying the road from the telephone wire just east of 7791 Lefthand Canyon Drive at 2:30 PM. Best bird in Ward was Pine Grosbeak. Weather was too nice to drive much else to the feeders. Nathan Pieplow Boulder -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Bird identity
Birders, I saw a bird in the boulder creek path today around evening. It was the first time i had seen that bird. I wasn't able to identify it and unfortunately did not get a good image of it. Could you guys help me identify it? Here is the link, http://www.flickr.com/photos/the_wildebeest/8365338137/in/photostream . Also, i spotted 150+ canada goose in the Potts field on the east campus (CU). [cobirds] Prairie Falcon - BCLP Jan 9 Jan 3
Today around 11 am there was a Prairie Falcon, in the small stand of mostly dead trees in the midst of the prairie dog town, on the west side of Mt Carbon. I also saw what I think is the same bird last Thursday around 2:30 pm, on the north side of Mt Carbon, hunting low beneath the dam, southwest corner. There is also a Kestrel which I see in this area almost every time I walk there, today the Kestrel was nearer Hwy 285 with a just-caught mouse. Very nice pic. I got lucky and was aiming my camera at the bird as it took off. I got a nice shot of the dark axillaries (dirty armpits - wingpits?). http://www.flickr.com/photos/breitschbirding/8355858576/in/photostream John Breitsch http://www.flickr.com/photos/breitschbirding/ On Wednesday, January 9, 2013 9:26:02 PM UTC-7, Kay wrote: http://www.kayniyo.com/trip_Unusual_Birds.htm As Richard said, we saw this Prairie Falcon perched for a long time on huge power pole #199 at Walden Ponds near Boulder Creek on Jan 6! [cobirds] Catherine Birdie Hurlbutt
Cobirders, There was a nice article in the Denver Post yesterday regarding the passing on December 22nd of Catherine Hurlbutt at the age of 99. The long time bird rehabilitator and DFO member was one of the more colorful characters in the birding community. I will always fondly remember years ago during the sightings portion of a DFO meeting her discourse on the impact of cats on bird populations and one suggested remedy to the problem involving the use of an automobile. And who can forget the very unique vehicle that Catherine herself drove. As Edgar would say, Nevermore.
