I would hope that there is still some leniency granted for those posts that may be lacking in correct protocol that are made on the fly from a cell phone in a remote location with bad coverage in order to get the word out on a good bird, even if those pesky four letter banding codes are used. Re: [cobirds] Re: COUNTIES PLEASE
Yes, when reporting a sighting it is wise to include the county name in the subject line. Very helpful. And I also agree with Steve Stachowiak The implication of a quick phoned-in note is, Stay tuned for more details, I am busy collecting a DNA sample. We can help each other by reading such a post from somewhere out in the Boondocks, recognizing where the call is coming from and perhaps sending a quick note to Cobirds explaining more details about how to get there. An example: Congrats to Big Bob Birder and his cousin, Marybelle, for finding Barred Owls at Maggie's Farm! For those of you unfamiliar with Maggies's Farm, that freeholding is in Cheyenne County. Detailed directions to Maggie's Farm (where no one works no more) are copied here from the CFO County Birding website: *Picturesque Maggie's Farm has been a Cheyenne County birding hot spot for over six months now. It has been * *good for eastern passerines and the habitat looks great for Tufted Titmouse and who knows, even Barred Owl is possible.* *Directions:* *Drive 5.22 miles east of Cheyenne Wells on Highway 40, past the airfield, then watch for 44 Road. [cobirds] Red-shouldered Hawk/Larimer
This morning around 6 am I had a Red-shouldered Hawk at the intersection of the Poudre bike trail and E. Lincoln Ave. on the south side of the river. It was perched on top of the conveyor machine at Ranch Way Feed. I watched it for a couple of minutes before it flew west along the riparian corridor. I also heard it call a couple of times before it flew off. Seen at Lathrop State Park this morning: Green Heron at the Wetlands pond Black-crowned Night-Heron near North Martin Inlet Snowy Egret and American Avocets at the small ponds behind Horseshoe Reservoir Also seen: a group of 12 small sandpipers in flight...bills appeared dark with streaked sides and bright white rumps...fairly long wings...tails appeared dark...best suspect appears to be White-rumped Sandpiper, but Sibely's would suggest this is highly unlikely. [cobirds] PA Birders at Estes Park
Our wild tour of northern Colorado is coming to a close. Arrived here at Estes on Thursday but flew to San Francisco over weekend and returned Monday night. Spring is coming along, but still a dearth of passerines in the mountains. On hike today to Fern Lake in RMNP found Yellow-rumped Warbler, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Dipper, and one Black-headed Grosbeak singing. That is fine because last evening we went with local expert to catch a long view of a Northern Pigmy Owl (our host has asked that we not disclose location). My wife and son heard faint hoots of Flammulated Owl, but this hard of hearing birder could not make out the calls coming from the opposite side of Cow Creek Canyon. We will try again tomorrow night for better results there or elsewhere. In summary, we found four of the five tough birds we came to find during the Colorado mud season. The going was tough (and bitterly cold at times) but nobody says that it is easy to find Black Rail, Boreal Owl, Flammulated Owl, Pigmy Owl, and Gunnison Sage-grouse, especially during one three-week visit. Thanks for those of you who helped us locate birds. We will long have memories of this visit to the Rocky Mountain State. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Bobolink, Lake Estes, Larimer County, 5/22
Continuing our visit to the Estes Park area in Larimer County, I birded again in the late afternoon at Lake Estes. Not much around, but I had a great surprise when I came upon a beautiful male Bobolink in the Matthews-Reeser Bird Sanctuary area at the lake. I checked eBird and found Bobolink were observed two times in May 2012 at Lake Estes and once in May and once in early June at Lake Estes in 2011. All the 2013 sightings appear to be out on the eastern plains. A new Colorado bird for me. Re: [cobirds] Re: COUNTIES PLEASE
I had never heard of Stalker Lake before, even though I'd lived and birded in Colorado for over 8 years. I'm sure I'm not the only person who was unfamiliar with that place. Given Steve Mlodinow and his extensive travels statewide, for all I know that lake and the Golden-winged Warbler could have been in my area. That guy gets around! A county name always, ALWAYS helps. It shouldn't fall upon the readers to have to google it just to know approximately where a good sighting was, especially if a place name isn't unique. [cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler, Lincoln County 5/22/13
Folks, After work today I was sitting outside in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn Express in Limon, enjoying a cold beverage and the warm evening, when I heard a warbler chip that I knew was not one of a certain seven or eight species that I don't have to look at to ID. I quickly located my optics and was floored when I saw that the bird in question was a Yellow-throated Warbler. The only trees around are a few little planted things that look like tiny hackberries but probably aren't, and a lone pine abutting the Micky D's parking lot. The bird flew into this pine along with a Yellow Warbler (which makes exactly 2 more warblers than I would expect to ever occur at this location), and as far as I know is still there. Addendum to Limon Holiday Inn parking lot sighting: about two weeks ago, I had a Common Poorwill in this same parking lot, and it too flushed over toward the neighboring McDonalds. A week before that, a Nashville Warbler was in the small pine at the S end of the parking lot. This is practically an eBird hotspot! In fact my list from this parking lot now trumps anything I've seen at a nearby private ranch in Lincoln Co for the year. Who would've thunk it. BTW, Elbert County is only a few feet away, but this bird was decidedly in Lincoln.
