[cobirds] Painted Redstart

2014-05-03 Thread Steve Stachowiak
Cobirders,

I just want to mention for those that may be newer birders in the state that
this is an extremely rare bird for the state. To have one stick in such an
accessible location for this length of time is unprecedented for Colorado.
There is no good excuse to not hop in the car and go experience this beautiful
little bugger. Plus, check out the surrounding grasslands while you are there.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Chico - Pueblo County - White-eyed Vireo

2014-05-03 Thread Robb Hinds
Today I stopped by Chico Basin Ranch (not on my way to Lamar). At Rose pond
(Pueblo County) I wasn't able to find the Palm Warbler but found the much
more common Virginia's Warbler. The water is still high so there isn't much
shorebird habitat. There were 2 Marbled Godwit and a Willet in a flooded
area near the pond.

Around HQ (Pueblo County) I found a White-eyed Vireo, Plumbeous Vireo, and
Townsend's Warbler.

[cobirds] PARKed by the shore...

2014-05-03 Thread David Suddjian
I spent yesterday (May 2) in Park County again. I have limited time right
now, so I’ll just report some of the interesting waterbirds seen from the
Park County shore lines, and hope to fill out the report later with notes
on some other species in another post.

All the big Park reservoirs are now ice free, and Spinney Mountain SP is
now open (and was loaded with fisherman).

Antero Reservoir had the most shorebirds. Nearly all of them were along the
shoreline southwest of the South Boat Launch, requiring walking for about
0.75 mile or farther along the shore to see the best areas. Shorebirds
there included 1 BLACK-NECKED STILT, 1 WHIMBREL, 1 DUNLIN, 2 LESSER
YELLOWLEGS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 4 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 3 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS,
11 MARBLED GODWITS, 36 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 86 AM. AVOCETS, 6 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES, and 12 WILSON’S PHALAROPES. Three BONAPRTE’S GULLS were with
Franklin’s at the North Boat Launch. One basic COMMON LOON was on the lake.

Spinney Mountain Reservoir had some good birding along the first part of
the shoreline past the entrance kiosk, and along the shoreline at the very
last access along the main road, but most of the ducks and such were out
far from shore. Among these were an adult male SURF SCOTER and a female
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER. Spinney shorebirds included 3 LONG-BILLED CURLEWS,
33 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, 6 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 7
MARBLED GODWITS, 29 WILLETS, 6 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, 3 WILSON’S
PHALAROPES, and 22 AM. AVOCETS.

At Eleven Mile Reservoir I only viewed the northwest part of the lake,
scanning from Sucker Cove and the Cross Creek access areas. Lots of ducks,
still, but none unusual. There was a BAIRD’S SANDPIPER, 6 AM. AVOCETS, 8
WILLETS, 1 COMMON LOON and one fly over GREAT EGRET (heading toward
Spinney). The Baird’s was only visible by walking along the shoreline to
the area where the South Platte flows into the lake.

Tarryall Reservoir had 3 LEAST SANDPIPERS, and 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.

[cobirds] Walker Pit menu, Friday Saturday - Douglas

2014-05-03 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds
Walker Pit, west of Franktown a quarter mile, yesterday had Marbled Godwits,
Long-billed dowitchers, and American Avocets. This afternoon, Saturday, none of
them had stayed -- but 4 Whimbrels arrived.

The Pit has its usual complement of ducks - many Gadwalls plus others.

[cobirds] Around Weld County

2014-05-03 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

Seemingly everywhere had a goody today
1- Crow Valley Campground: the famed Painted Redstart, a female Townsend's
Warbler, 2 Solitary Sands
2- Norma's Grove: 1 GC Kinglet
3- Private residence near Greeley: Harris's Sparrow
4- Windsor Lake: breeding plumaged RN Grebe
5- Union Reservoir: adult Krider's Red-tailed Hawk. Had one at essentially same
spot on nearly same date a year ago, and one at same location in late Feb 2011.
Could these sightings all pertain to same bird Also, 3 lingering Horned
Grebes (along with a dozen or so Eared and hundreds of Western/Clark's Grebes)

[cobirds] New Boulder County shorebird hotspot

2014-05-03 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.
In between birthday parties and soccer games (how all my Saturdays are, these
days) this Saturday, May 3, I explored along N. 109th Street in Erie, eastern
Boulder County. Just south of the Boulder Creek crossing, there's a new wetland
created by the September 2013 floods. And it had birds, notably shorebirds: 2
Black-necked Stilts, 7 American Avocets, 1 Semipalmated Plover, 3 Killdeer, 6
Marbled Godwits, 2 Least Sandpipers, and 6 Long-billed Dowitchers. Also a Great
Egret, cormorants and pelicans coming and going, and 5 White-faced Ibi. And
several Vesper Sparrows, plus Swainson's Hawks going over. (Big Swainson's Hawk
flight all day in eastern Boulder County.)
Here's a map and coordinates for the site:
http://tinyurl.com/Jasper-Road-mudflats
I've channeled Jean Dixon, and she tells me that this site is going to be
Boulder County's 2014 version of Clover Basin Rez in 2010 or Teller Lake No. 5
in 2012. Let's keep an eye on this place. Park safely, obey signs, bird
sensibly, and post your sightings to COBirds, eBird, and CFO-Facebook.
Over at Cottonwood Marsh, early in the morning, Hannah and Andrew and I saw an
alternate male Cinnamon x Blue-winged Teal hybrid, 3 Eastern Kingbirds, and not
a whole lot else.
Early afternoon, Sale Lake (it's near a soccer field...) had an Orange-crowned
Warbler and some Bushtits.
Mid-afternoon, the north Boulder foothills had a lot of soccer players. And
Swainson's Hawks going over.
Late-afternoon, Greenlee Reservoir had the usual suspects: singing Soras (at
least three have taken up residence there) and Pied-billed Grebes, singing
Yellow-headed Blackbirds, and silent drake Wood Ducks. Also my first western
tiger swallowtail of the year.

Hi everyone,

There was a good crowd this morning 5/3 at Crow Valley Campground. I wore
waders for the occasion. I saw the Painted Redstart at the west end of the
campground. A Pine Warbler was in the cedar in the southwest corner (waders
required). Other birds of interest included a Red-naped Sapsucker, a
Green-tailed Towhee, and a Swainson's Thrush.

[cobirds] Painted Redstart, 5/4, and a few other belated odds and ends

2014-05-03 Thread Andrew Spencer
Hi all,

I just thought I'd chime in and add that Tayler Brooks and I saw the
Painted Redstart this morning on a quick trip to Crow Valley Campground.
It was hanging out in the northwestern corner the entire time, and singing
actively. I got a lengthy recording of it, which can be heard here:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/176975.

On another note, I just finished up two grouse tours covering most of
Colorado in April. I don't have too many unusual birds to report, and no
real rarities, but I did find an early Hammond's Flycatcher at Colorado
National Monument on April 25th, an early Least Flycatcher at Two Buttes on
April 27th, and a very early White-rumped Sandpiper amid many Western and a
few Baird's Sandpipers at Lake Cheraw, also on April 27th.

Good birding to all,

Andrew Spencer

[cobirds] Boulder County + birds on 5/3

2014-05-03 Thread William H Kaempfer
I help John Vanderpoel with a Boulder County Audubon Society tour of eastern
Boulder County and nearby spots today. We had a great day with a total of 115
species for our efforts (over 11 hours).

We started at Walden Ponds where the many birds were mainly confined to the
domain of usual suspects but included some ibis and a Long-billed Dowitcher.
Sombrero Marsh was next and just about the first bird sighted by the initial
car to arrive was an American Bittern (which all eventually enjoyed). We also
heard a Sora call. Baseline Res. had a huge flock of Franklin's Gulls and a
flock of 15 Baird's Sandpipers plus Hooded Mergansers.

Next up was the Fowler Trail just east of Eldorado Springs (which we selected
because it had the smallest hoard of Boulderites out embracing Mother Nature)
where among the very many birds observed we had good looks at a Broad-winged
Hawk. From there we traversed to CR 109 at Boulder Creek where we saw what Ted
Floyd reported, save for Semi-plamated Plover. Panama was not too interesting
other than a few good sparrows like Lincoln's.

Nest was the St. Vrain State Park area with both big white egrets, Foster's and
one Caspian Tern. The Firestone Gravel Ponds had many unexpected diving duck
species and Rough-winged Swallows.

Union was as Steve Mlodinow reported plus a single Willet. At that point, we
headed west to Rabbit Mountain where we had a Golden Eagle and Rock Wren. Next
was the Davis household west of Lyons which had a great collection of foothills
birds including Western Bluebirds, Loggerhead Shrike, Cassin's Finch, Lesser
Goldfinch and Scrub and Pinyon Jays. We picked up Harris's Sparrow's in Pam
Piombino's yard before our last stop at the bridge over Boulde Creek at 75th
St. We got our last three birds of the day there, Dipper, Eastern Phoebe and
Wood Duck.
