[cobirds] 2 pr. prob Eastern Phoebes with hybrid Black X Eastern Phoebe mates attending nests in Canon City area

2014-05-27 Thread SeEttaM .
I have found two probable hybrid Black X Eastern Phoebe (intermediate in
plumage between these species) that are feeding nestlings in the Canon City
area. Both are with a mate that looks more typical of an Eastern Phoebes.
I have some excellent photos of both pairs and their nest but have only got
photos of one of the prob hybrids and it's nest uploaded so far to my Birds
and Nature blog . These are high
quality close up photos from my dslr camera and very long telephoto outfit
showing they prob hybrid bringing what looks like some type of ant species
to feed the nestlings. I will be uploading more tomorrow.

[cobirds] Ovenbirds - Boulder foothills

2014-05-27 Thread tocalytic
Nice to see/hear some singing Ovenbirds along the hike from NCAR to Fern
Canyon today in Boulder County.

>From NCAR at the end of South Boulder Road/Table Mesa follow the trail
behind NCAR past the Water Tower and to the Mesa Trail Junction. Going
south on the Mesa Trail leads towards Bear Canyon and the first bird was
along the trail just after it crosses the creek, the second east of the
meadow that you get to just after the creek and the third above the meadow
near the junction to the trail going up Fern Canyon.

Cheers,

Tim Mitzen

[cobirds] Re: Lazy UO Ranch, Las Animas County, May 23-25

2014-05-27 Thread Ted Floyd

Hello, Birders.

Here are links to audio of some of the birds I recorded May 23-25 at the
Lazy UO Ranch, Las Animas County:

Rufous-crowned Sparrow, 5/24, singing its typical “dry bubbly” song, one of
fifteen we detected at the ranch: http://www.xeno-canto.org/179857

Rock Wren, 5/24, giving a typical series of songs:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/179855

Canyon Towhee, 5/24, singing its primary song:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/179854

Canyon Wren, 5/25, doing the Paul Winter thing:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/179852

Cassin’s Sparrow, 5/25, singing during its display flight:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/179851

Lark Sparrow, 5/23, singing its complex and disjointed song:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/179850

Gray Flycatcher, 5/24, and Eastern Phoebe, 5/24. These might seem like an
unlikely combo, but they nest side-by-side where juniper woods come down to
the banks of Carrizo Creek.

Gray Flycatcher: http://www.xeno-canto.org/179849
Eastern Phoebe: http://www.xeno-canto.org/179848

White-eyed Vireo, 5/24. We weren’t able to get especially close, but,
still, you can easily hear this bird’s distinctive song:
http://www.xeno-canto.org/179847

Summer Tanager, 5/25. This is one of at least three birds we documented at
the ranch: http://www.xeno-canto.org/179846

[cobirds] May 26 Big Day in Larimer County

2014-05-27 Thread Nick Komar
I spent more than 22 hours on a Larimer County Big Day on Monday May 26
(Memorial Day). Companions were Austin Hess, Dave Wade and Ken Pals. The
overriding highlight was a close encounter with a Mountain Lion that crossed
our path just a few hundred feet from us while birding along the road just west
of Rist Canyon pass. Together, we had more than 80 years of Colorado outdoor
experience, and this was a first for all of us! Total bird species tallied by
the group was 153. Bird highlights included the following:
1. Several active American Three-toed Woodpeckers working the burn area
at Rist Canyon pass.
2. Singing Ovenbirds at 3 stops in upper Rist Canyon
3. A cooperative Band-tailed Pigeon that posed for photos in Rist Canyon
4. A bevvy of Bobolinks at Reservoir Ridge Natural Area, as previously
reported by others
5. Several migrants moving through Pine Ridge Natural Area (Dixon
Reservoir) including 2 singing American Redstarts and a silent Willow Flycatcher
6. Lingering Common Goldeneye and Hooded Merganser at East Horsetooth
Gravel Pit
7. A singing adult male Orchard Oriole at Arapahoe Bend Natural Area
8. A breeding plumage Common Loon at Timnath Reservoir
9. A non-breeding Pacific Loon at Hamilton Reservoir

We struck out on small mountain owls, and missed several common/expected
species including Great Horned Owl, Belted Kingfisher, White-breasted Nuthatch,
Ruby-crowned Kinglet and several others. The unexpected species compensated for
the misses, and really after the Mountain Lion encounter, the rest was all
icing on the cake. You can view my ebird list for this Big Day at

[cobirds] Worm-eating Warbler Continues at Belmar Park, Jefferson County

2014-05-27 Thread Douglas Kibbe
Thanks to Joe Roller for quickly posting my earlier sighting.
The bird continues (as of 12:50) in the same tree where I originally found it
this morning.
Look for it in the cottonwood on the north side of the east-west path into the
gazebo. The "wedding" pool is directly north of the tree.
In the heat of the day, however, it may retreat to a dense stand of choke
cherries about ten yards to the east of the cottonwood.

It is likely to remain in the vicinity of this cottonwood as the tree seems to
be host to an endless supply of green worms, which the warbler finds to its
liking.

This continuing rarity was heard and briefly seen from 10:30 til 11:30 AM

Once you arrive, you can be sure that you are in the correct place, as the

[cobirds] Weld County Highlights 5/26

2014-05-27 Thread Chip Clouse
COBirders,
I was lucky enough to be invited along on a Weld County trip by Doug
Shoffner and a mutual new birder friend and her 9 year old daughter - also
a budding birder! We ended up with 71 species.
After great looks at singing Grasshopper Sparrow and the first of hundreds
of Lark Buntings at Hwy 14 and CR 51, it was on to Crow Valley Campground.
Best birds were a 1st year male (AHY) American Redstart and a Red-headed
Woodpecker with bright birds like a female Western Tanager, American
Goldfinches, Orchard and Bullock's orioles, a male Black-headed Grosbeak,
Yellow Warblers and a less bright Brown Thrasher and endlessly singing
Northern Mockingbird wowing our new birders. Unfortunately, I couldn't
turn any of the Swainson's Thrushes into Gray-cheeked.
Just up the road at the Work Center we had female Summer Tanager and
another (or same?) Red-headed Woodpecker. The Crow Creek bridge over CR 77
had a lot of activity but nothing unusual until a Swainson's Hawk dove
through and excited everything.
Along Rd 96 towards Murphy's Pasture it was mostly Lark Buntings with a
smattering of Horned Larks, Western Meadowlarks, Vesper Sparrows and
Western Kingbirds. I was able to get on one McCown's Longspur with my
scope but not for long. This was our biggest disappointment as it would
have been a lifer for all but me. An impending storm and lots of target
shooters hastened our retreat to the south.
County Rd 48 south of Lower Latham was hopping with both calling Virginia
Rail and Sora and many others. eBird didn't like the two Lesser Yellowlegs
still hanging on but our best bird was a single White-rumped Sandpiper
that flew right over us, then circled and flew out of sight to the south.
CR 42 at Beebe Draw was also quite busy with American Avocets on nests and
some other goodies including Great-tailed Grackles (also on CR 48). A very
distant scope view of a Burrowing Owl by the feed lot was probably the
overall favorite of our 9-year-old. All together it was a respectable day
and tons of fun!
