[cobirds] *No* Magnificent Hummingbird for a week...

2014-11-18 Thread Adam Jack
COBirders,

It has been a week since our magnificent vagrant was last seen here. It was
suggested that I keep the feeder out (and warmed) just in case she came
back, in case that gave us more information/insight, but there has been no
sight nor sound. She is gone.

I'm taking the feeder down for the season, and remembering a special fall.

regards

Adam

Re: [cobirds] Probable Common Crane at Muleshoe NWR

2014-11-18 Thread Nathan Pieplow
As the crane flies, the west Texas Common Crane is directly south of
Colorado right now. Might have crossed Colorado to get to Texas. Might be
coming back this way next spring. Something to keep in mind!

[cobirds] Chatfield region mostly, Nov 18

2014-11-18 Thread David Suddjian
[Douglas]

Went back to Chatfield Reservoir this morning, hoping something new blew
in, but by the looks of it, not much did, except Goldeneye numbers bumped
up quite a bit. At the Marina sand spit an adult *Greater White-fronted
Goose* flew in with a flock of Canadas. A female *Red-breasted Merganser*
was near Plum Creek inlet.

Aurora Rampart Reservoir at the Roxborough entry had 2 female *Black
Scoters*, 1 *Pacific Loon*, and a fair assortment of other waterfowl in
small numbers. A *Prairie Falcon* made a ceremonial pass.

Platte Canyon Reservoir (near crossing of Waterton Road over South Platte)
was fun. Here I had a *Common Loon*, a female *Blue-winged Teal*, 11 *Greater
Scaup*, an unexpected *Greater Yellowlegs* that flew in from the north and
circled the lake area, calling, then moved off to the northeast, nice
counts (for a small reservoir) of 117 *Common Goldeneyes* and 62 *Hooded
Mergansers*, and a *Say's Phoebe*.

[Jefferson]

A *Northern Shrike* was perched at the Audubon Center feeding station area
near the Waterton Canyon trailhead.

Trailmark Lake was about 85% frozen, but the open hole had a throng of
about 1300 ducks frenetically feeding on some aquatic plant (and perhaps
aquatic animals living on the plants). These included about 450 *American
Wigeon*, 400 *Ring-necked Ducks*, 310 *Redheads*, and others including
2 *Greater
Scaup*, and 2 *Nor. Pintail* (my only pintails in the general area over
recent days). I viewed this lake a couple weeks ago, when there was no ice.
There was a moderate number of ducks, but they were mostly loafing or
feeding leisurely. I'd have to assume that same aquatic plant (and
critters?) was there, and even more available. I wonder what changed to
spur the very active foraging I saw today...besides the innate urgency of
an ice hole.

Back home, a *Harris's Sparrow* continues at my Ken Caryl Valley feeding
station

[cobirds] Tundra Swans at HamiltonRes (Larimer) on 11/18

2014-11-18 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
After checking on the still-present rarities (wwscoter, blkscoter, and
longtailedduck) at Douglas Reservoir (Larimer), Georgia Doyle and I went up to
Hamilton Reservoir associated with the Rawhide Power Plant north of Buckeye
Road. There we saw a group of three Tundra Swans swimming in the southwest
corner and a lone fourth Tundra Swan a little further north along the west
shore (but still basically the southwest corner of the res). All were adults.
Nick Komar loaned me his wonderful Swarovski scope and even with that wonderful
piece of glass I could not make out any yellow in the lores of these birds (but
they still might show some with a closer view).

Also, several of us all looked for the "saturated plumaged" (at least on the
back) harrier at Douglas Reservoir and Nick and Georgia say they may have seen
it, and report that its underparts, indeed, appeared "normal".

[cobirds] El Paso County Scoters, Long-tailed Duck 11/18

2014-11-18 Thread Lee Farese
Hi All,

Will Clary and I birded around El Paso County this morning.

We spent about an hour, from 7:30 to 8:30 at Prospect Lake. There is much
more open water than it sounds like there was yesterday, so birds were a
bit more spread out. In close to shore was the *Black Scoter*, diving
frequently along with Buffleheads, Canvasback, Scaup, and a female Ruddy
Duck. A little ways out we saw a *Surf Scoter*,with a clear white patch on
the back of its head. We weren't able to find either of the White-winged.
Large numbers of waterfowl on the lake, constantly stirred up by a Bald
Eagle.

We then went to Big Johnson Reservoir, and spent a while scoping the water.
We found the continuing *White-winged Scoter* and *Long-tailed Duck*. Also
3 Common Loons and a few Clark's Grebes, along with many more expected
species. Two eagles were present here as well, along with many Red-tails
and a few Kestrels.

After that we did a brief walk through Fountain Creek Regional Park, where
highlights were Virginia Rail and several raptors: a very light juv.
Red-tail, a Cooper's Hawk, a Sharp-shinned bathing in the creek, and a
Harrier. We found three lingering RC Kinglets too.

[cobirds] Scoters, Prospect Lake, El Paso Co

2014-11-18 Thread David Chartier
Saw one each of surf, black and white-winged scoters this morning about 8am.
There is still a small opening near the swim beach where I saw the surf scoter.
There is another opening out toward the middle where I saw the black and
white-winged. I did see both the surf and white-winged dive and not
re-surface, so I hope they did not get trapped under the ice.

[cobirds] Birding trip to Pueblo this Satuday

2014-11-18 Thread BKP
In-case anyone is interested, I'm leading a Aiken Audubon birding trip to
Pueblo this coming Saturday (22 Nov).  This trip was suppose to happen last
Sunday, though that trip was postponed due to cold/snowy weather.  If you need
details on this up-coming trip, please let me know.  Some of the more
interesting birds that have been seen around Pueblo in the last few days:
Trumpeter and Tundra Swans, Great and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Red-necked
Grebe, Common Loons, Bonaparte's Gulls, and Rusty Blackbird.  That list of rare
birds might get longer, once more places are checked in the next few days.
