[cobirds] Cranes. Windsor Reservoir

2015-10-17 Thread 'Joan Glabach' via Colorado Birds
We have cranes on the ground for the third night. Thursday we had 65 spend the
night and leave about 8:30 am. Friday was our big night with cranes arriving
at 4 pm and not leaving until 10am today. Today we had almost given up when a
large flight landed and is now settled for the night. I think there are over
200 in this one. In six years living here this is the first time we have been
sure they stayed all night.

[cobirds] El Paso county --- Red-necked Grebe, 10/17/2015

2015-10-17 Thread 'Mark Peterson' via Colorado Birds
COBirders,
I made a quick stop at Big Johnson reservoir around midday today and found a
RED-NECKED GREBE in the "northeast" corner of the reservoir.  It was not really
associating with anything else.  Most of the other large grebes were in the
"northwest" corner.  Nothing else of real note but some increased numbers in
some of the regular fall duck species.

[cobirds] Eastern Colorado Saturday

2015-10-17 Thread Joey Kellner
Kathy Mihm-Dunning and I headed out east to see if ANY migrants were about.
Well there WERE some migrants at every stop.

Flagler SWA:
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1
Blue-headed Vireo - 1
Winter Wren - 1
American Robin - 0, NONE! Zilch! Zippo!
Gray Catbird - 1 (late-ish)
Yellow-rumped Warblers - lots
Wilson's Warbler - 1 late
White-throated Sparrow - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 8
Red Crossbill - 3 (a tad odd for the location...no pines in the
area).

Arriba City Park:
Great Horned Owl - 1
Merlin - 1 Taiga race mobbing the Great Horned Owl! At the same time
a
Richardson's (prairie) Merlin was mobbing the much darker
and slightly
larger Taiga! Remains of several Eurasian Collard-Doves
found at several
locations in the park. :-)
Blue-headed Vireo - 1 (yes, two in one day!)
White-throated Sparrow - 1

Private Ranch in Lincoln County:
White-throated Sparrow - 1

Jackson Reservoir State Park (Campground):
White-throated Sparrow - 1

In addition to the above goodies we had good numbers of:
Ruby-crowned Kinglets
Hermit Thrushes
Yellow-rumped Warblers
Orange-crowned Warblers
Dark-eyed Juncos (Pink-sided, Oregon & Slate-colored)
A few sparrows of the genus spizella still present.

So, there ARE migrants finally coming though...better late than never! :-)

2015-10-17 Thread Mary Keithler
Hi all,

4-5 large waves of Sandhill Cranes just passed by our house near the SW corner
of Cherry Creek State Park. Quite a glorious sight. They were headed in a
southeast direction.

Happy migration!

[cobirds] Re: [NATURE-NET] More Cranes, Boulder Co.

2015-10-17 Thread Linda Andes-Georges
Todd, these birds are just going over us now, about 5-600 as ou said, and
boomeranging off any thermals that they find. So with all the circling they
came SW instead, and reached the Lagerman area in a lazy half hour. As the
groups break up in the thermals and then rejoin in Vs, they make a really
joyful racket.

[cobirds] CSR. El Paso Co, Saturday

2015-10-17 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBirders,

A good arrival of sparrows and Ruby-crowned Kinglets this morning at Clear
Spring Ranch. Best was my third White-throated Sparrow of the week. Also a
couple of Sandhill Cranes flew over - but not hundreds, this morning.
Last day for my banding season is tomorrow.

Rough total for banded birds this season at CSR (since 8/1/2015, all at the
riparian willow-marsh area, near the sod house) - 450 birds.

Notable species counts-
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 8
Yellow Warbler - 31 (plus several recaptures - some probably local breeders,
some returning migrants)
Wilson’s Warbler - 57
Orange-crowned Warbler - 7 (plus two recaptures from last year)
Common Yellowthroat - 31
Yellow-rumped Warbler -1
Chestnut-sided Warbler -1
N Waterthrush - 1
Yellow-breasted Chat - 5 (plus several recaptures from previous years)
Gray Catbird - 25
Chipping Sparrow - 72
Song Sparrow - 39
Lincoln’s Sparrow - 11
White-crowned Sparrow - 45 (Gambell’s, 2 Mountain) (two recaptured returns from
last spring)
White-throated Sparrow - 3

[cobirds] Sandhill Cranes Boulder foothills

2015-10-17 Thread David Waltman
I left home at dawn and spent all morning in eastern Boulder County trying in
vain to find Sandhill Cranes. Ted Floyd in the field and Cheryl at home had to
listen to my whining about it. Then, back home at 1 pm, Cheryl yelled from our
yard, "David, I hear birds!!" I estimated about 300 seen from my driveway
looking west most likely over Lefthand Canyon and Olde Stage Road. I'll be
able to get an exact count when I look at my photos. They were progressing
slowly to the south as they were working on gaining altitude over the foothills
and forming and reforming blobs and V's. Love that sound!

thermal overhead! Maybe the same group. Continued heading south. So cool!

[cobirds] Ibis at Cottonwood Marsh, Boulder County

2015-10-17 Thread Peter Burke
CoBirders,
I observed a juvenile Glossy/White-faced Ibis this morning at Cottonwood
Marsh in Boulder County. The bird appeared overall dark to me, with no
noticeable white marks on the face, grayish bill and legs. At that point a
hunter's gun flushed the bird along with many ducks and a few Greater
Yellowlegs.

It briefly landed on an island giving me a chance to see it in close detail
in the morning sunlight. I could tell it had a dark, not red, iris. A few
more gunshots and the bird was gone, but I felt confident it was a Glossy -
based on the dark eye.

Hearing that David Waltman had re-found the bird, I went back for further
study. There's a note in Sibley next to 1st winter White-faced Ibis that
says, "iris red by Feb." I wasn't aware that a juv. White-faced would also
have a dark eye at this time of year... Without that mark to differentiate
the two species, I'm not sure this bird can be identified reliably. I've
updated my eBird list to Glossy/White-faced.

Other late-ish birds on this glorious October day were three Long-billed
Dowitchers at Teller Lake.

Good Birding,
Peter

[cobirds] Boulder Ibis ID

2015-10-17 Thread David Waltman
Initially I was leaning to White-faced Ibis ID, but after studying my photos
and field guides I'm leaning to Glossy but not sure. Before I read Peter
Burke's most recent email, I too had changed my eBird report from White-faced
to White-faced/Glossy. I just don't know. I don't know if my photos are good
enough or if it's possible to ID this bird, but here's a link with three photos:

[cobirds] Chico Basin Yesterday (El Paso Co, Pueblo Co)

2015-10-17 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
Friday 10-16 I visited Chico Basin Ranch (El Paso Co, Pueblo Co), did not
see anything resembling reported Spraque's Pipits but had some birds of
interest: A single Bufflehead and flocks of McCown's Longspurs at the lake
S of headquarters, two Great Horned Owls and a couple of weak-sounding
Marsh Wrens at the now dried-up headquarters pond, two Loggerhead Shrikes
and two Mountain Bluebirds along the road. Ravens which shall go
unidentified. Northern Harriers, Sharp-shinned, Coopers, and
Red-tailed Hawks (seems like all the Swainson's suddenly vanished).
Hundreds of White-crowned Sparrows, mostly immature.

The banding station was more active that I'd anticipated, a lone Hermit
Thrush, Red-naped Sapsucker, a drumming Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Brown
Creeper, Townsend's Solitaire, lots of Dark-eyed Juncos (Oregon,
Pink-sided, Slate-colored), Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Orange-crowned Warbler,
and my highlight bird Cassin's Vireo which had eluded me all year despite
being seen frequently by others. Wild Turkeys on the road out, fall
foliage, a day that started with my car heater and ended with air
conditioning.
