[cobirds] Elk Thistle Drive feeders "closed" (Summit County)

2016-04-19 Thread Adam Vesely
Hi all,

Many of you are familiar with the private feeders in the front yard of an
Elk Thistle Drive (Wildernest area, Silverthorne, Summit County) property,
which usually affords great views of Rosy Finches and other mountain
species. Today while driving by, the owners have posted a sign essentially
saying "No Loitering/Standing/Parking" and "No cameras/scopes/binoculars."
I'm not sure how new the sign is, but I think it's recent (unless it was
covered with snow a few months ago). When I spoke with the pleasant owner
a few months ago, she said they've been having problems with people coming
on to their property, issues with tour buses, and even argumentative
foreigners. It appears they've had enough, and that birders are no longer
welcome. All FYI in case any of you think about stopping by.

Sincerely,

Adam Vesely
Thornton, CO

Earth Day on Rabbit Mountain with Carl Starace

*Friday, April 22, 2016 – 8:00a to ? *

* Free. No reservation needed. *
Join Carl for an early spring ramble about Rabbit Mountain. This County
Open Space parcel is one of the best places to hear the haunting song of
the Canyon Wren and to see Rock Wrens. Golden Eagles regularly soar
overhead, as do other hawks and falcons. Say’s Phoebes are early and
expected, as are Mountain Bluebirds and often, Loggerhead Shrikes. Last
spring, this trip witnessed the spectacular migration of dozens of Kestrels
moving north. Meet at the trail head located along North 53rd Street.
There is a sign directing you to Rabbit Mountain on the north side of Ute
Highway (Rte. 66) east of Lyons.

[cobirds] Lake Holbrook, Otero Co. 4/19 am birding (Hudsonian Godwit, Dunlin, etc.)

2016-04-19 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Stephany McNew and I got to Lake Holbrook, east of Rocky Ford, Otero County,
around 7:25am (on 19 April 2016).
We started in the NW corner of the lake, and couldn't find the Hudsonian
Godwit.  We found plenty of other shorebirds and other birds.  Then we went to
North East corner, and saw 15 Marbled Godwits, without any small godwit with
them.  We checked the pond just east of Holbrook, and then went back to the NE
Corner, looking at the Marbled Godwits again, thinking the Hudsonian isn't
here.  We went back to the NW corner, where Dan Stringer and other birder were
looking at the Hudsonian Godwit!  Not sure where it was when we were there the
first time, it was right in front on the return visit.  Dan described a
shorebird with a black belly, so we thought it must be a Dunlin.  Stephany was
able to pick it out of the peep flock (Western, Semipalmated, and Least
Sandpipers all there), plus Semipalmated and Snowy Plovers.  A Peregrine Falcon
and a Merlin were at Lake Holbrook this morning too.  On the Reservoir, a
breeding plumaged Common Loon, a female Hooded Merganser were present.
A very productive morning, hope the other birders who went looking for these
birds, were able to see them. Our full e-bird list is here from just Lake
Holbrook:http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S29064368

A huge thanks to Stan Oswald for finding the Godwit yesterday, happy it stayed
around, and had plenty of nice shorebird friends this morning.

[cobirds] Suggestion: Look for Broad-winged Hawks right now

2016-04-19 Thread Ted Floyd
Hey, everybody.

Well, the skies have finally cleared, sort of, and winds are out of the
south. Not surprisingly, I saw one or two *broad-winged hawks* over Boulder
Creek at 75th St., Boulder County, just a bit earlier today, Tues., Apr.
19. If there is indeed a flight under way today, I imagine it will pick up
in the next couple hours. Look up!

By the way, the *black phoebe* put on a nice show
 near
the the 75th St. bridge.

Hey all, there's a Red-bellied Woodpecker hanging out at Crow Valley

[cobirds] Weld Neotropic Cormorant

2016-04-19 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

Sorry for the delayed post.
Yesterday afternoon I had an adult NEOTROPIC CORMORANT swimming with a DC
Cormorant near the east side of Lower Latham Reservoir. Both birds flew off
(hence not a post from-the-spot). The Neotropic is similar in size to a Western
Grebe.

In all, from Crow Valley to Union Reservoir, I had 106 species.
Crow Valley was bird scarce, but had the long-staying RED BELLIED WOODPECKER
and an early ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER as well as a location-rare 2 Hooded
Mergansers

Eaton Cemetery had a nice little group of YR Warblers and a GRAY HEADED JUNCO

Glenmere Park in Greeley had 4 BUSHTITS in the junipers in the sw. corner of
the park. These have been present for a couple years. There were 2
Black-crowned Night Herons on the island, but there is no evidence of breeding

A GADWALL x N SHOVELER was at Stewarts' Pond
17 LEAST,1 BAIRD'S and 1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER were at Behren's Reservoir
(ponds across from the actual res)

BN STILTS were still at Loloff Reservoir and the Weld Co Rd 59 Ponds

Firestone Gravel Pits had a CACKLING GOOSE, 6 HOODED MERGS, a COMMON GOLDENEYE
and lots of Bufflehead and RB Mergs

Union Reservoir was busy with 700+ Franklin's Gulls, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULL, 5 species of swallows, 2 WILLET...

Good Birding
