[cobirds] Lamar (Prowers) on Oct12

2016-10-12 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Finally the weather got off its hot and dry treadmill. Instead of nearly 90
like yesterday, today was cool (high of around 60).

Lamar Community College Woods had a nice mix with the highlights being:
House Wren
Marsh Wren
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Lincoln's Sparrow
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER
Brown Thrasher
Northern Cardinal (2)
White-breasted Nuthatch (eastern)
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Chestnut-collared Longspur (heard overhead)
Krider's Red-tailed Hawk
Spotted Towhee
Orange-crowned Warbler (8)

Fairmount Cemetery:
PINE WARBLER (1 singing male) possibly the same bird that has been present for
months - if so, will it winter?

Total around town for the last week, which has seemed quite slow for this part
of the state and date: 81

[cobirds] Black-and-White Warbler - deKoevend Park (Arapahoe Co.)

2016-10-12 Thread Jared Del Rosso
I visited deKoevend Park (Arapahoe Co.) this evening, hoping to collect my
first juncos at the park. (There were a half dozen in my yard near the
park, so I thought I might spot one there too.) I didn't see any, but a
walk along the High Line Canal trail on the southwest side of the park
yielded many robins, a Townsend Solitaire, seven White-crowned Sparrows,
and my first Hermit Thrush at deKoevend.

I took the High Line Canal Trail back home, stopping on the southern edge
of the park to watch, count, and photograph a flock of Bushtit. I'm glad I
did. Above the Bushtit were a few Black-capped Chickadee. Above the
chickadee were three Downy Woodpecker. Above the woodpeckers was a
Black-and-White Warbler, my first in Colorado. (Photographs of the bird,
which was fairly high in trees across the canal from me, are in my eBird
checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32012559.)

Two days ago, I had the good fortune of watching a late Common Nighthawk at
deKoevend.

[cobirds] Vertical feeding of American Dipper

2016-10-12 Thread Bob Righter
Hi

Adding to the theme started by David Suddjian about Dippers adapting to
different environments, today, Sandy and I visited the North Clear Creek
Falls, located off 149, The Silver Thread Scenic Byway in Hinsdale County,
Forest Road 510. Halfway up the falls we saw an American Dipper foraging on
the side of the watery cliffs, darting close to and behind tumbling water,
and also foraging on the algae, where the water would spill onto the ledges.

The North Clear Creek Falls is also the most accessible place in Colorado to
watch Black Swifts, mostly June through August, the early morning to late
afternoons or if lucky any time. At the overlook there are four informational
signs, one which points out the Black Swifts' summer and winter range and how
the ROCKY MOUNTAIN BIRD OBSERVATORY, with their skilled biologists, were able
to strap geo-locators onto the Swifts, which eventually revealed the Swifts'
winter range.

[cobirds] Sparrows, CSR, El Paso Co., Wed

2016-10-12 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

I haven’t posted any banding results lately, because I haven’t seen anything
out of the ordinary, but I am still working daily at Clear Spring Ranch.

Today, with the upslope, fog, breeze, and dampness, birds were busy moving
around the station. 31 banded today, all sparrows.
Spotted Towhees, Gambel’s White-crowned, Song, Lincoln’s, Chipping Sparrows,
and a Pink-sided Junco.

And another milestone was reached - 1000 (now 1007) Chipping Sparrows this
season! Whew. Total birds this season - 2165.
Now it seems that the older birds are going through. Previously I was seeing
5:1 hatch year: adult Chipping Sparrows, now it is about 3:1 adults.

More soon,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Where the Boulder County Golden-crowned Sparrow spends the rest of the year . . .

2016-10-12 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, everybody.

I know a great many of us have seen and heard the *golden-crowned sparrow*
that winters every year by the parking area at Teller Lake No. 5, Boulder
County. But have you ever wondered where that bird goes every summer? Now
we have the answer to that pressing question! Check out this email from
California birder Ed Pandolfino:

=

Ted,

FYI, based on your recording of your GC Sparrow on xeno-canto
(XC287271), and using the results from
Shizuka et al.

(attached), your bird is giving Song Type 5 which means it is likely either
coming from coastal central BC or southern Yukon!

Just thought you'd enjoy knowing that.
