[cobirds] Talon-Grappling Ravens - Southern San Luis Valley

2017-05-21 Thread KevyGudGuy via Colorado Birds
Hello Fellow Birders,

Today as I was driving CO 142 from Romeo (Conejos County) to San Luis
(Costilla County) I saw what appeared to be antagonistic behavior between
two ravens (probably a mated pair) and a third raven, guessing 100 feet above
the ground. The episode climaxed with one of the pair and the outlier
bird engaging in a talon grapple, one foot each, and spiralling/somersaulting
each other in a plummet toward the ground. They broke off about 5 - 10
feet from earth and both landed upright and hopped away to be about 20 feet
from each other. That's all I saw as I sped by at 65 mph.

I knew that raptors do this and I've seen Prairie Falcons and Bald
Eagles doing it, but I didn't know that ravens did it as well. Pretty
spectacular stuff.

Keep Smilin',
Kevin

2017-05-21 Thread David Tønnessen
At 5:40 I found a Yellow-billed Cuckoo in the taller green ash trees on the
east side of the south end of warbler alley in Fountain Creek Regional
Park. The continuing Bay-breasted Warbler that has been cooperative for
many throughout the day I last observed at about 5:30. At 5:50 I left the
area.

[cobirds] Logan County Shorebirds

2017-05-21 Thread William H Kaempfer
I returned today from a weekend trip to Auburn, NE for the spring meetings of
the Nebraska Ornithologists Union meeting. While I had a great time back
there, I wanted to update Cobirds on some Logan County birds since there have
been so few reports from that section of the state.

Red Lion marsh was full of birds, and water. That limited the variety of
shorebirds to just Killdeer and phalaropes, but the later included both
Wilson's and at least 15 Red-necked. A Great Egret was also a slightly
unexpected presence.

A few miles to the west on CR 85 less than a mile north of US 138 I stopped in
one spot and could see Upland Sandpiper, Northern Pintail, Savannah Sparrow and
Burrowing Old on the four points of the compass.

I should also note that when I left for NE on Thursday I counted 47 Stilt
Sandpipers at Stalker Pond in Wray.

[cobirds] Red-necked Phalarope, Douglas

2017-05-21 Thread 'Hugh Kingery' via Colorado Birds

Another flock of Red-necked Phalaropes, 38 at Parker Regional Park. You can
walk to the pond from the parking area off Parker Road, or drive to it via the
Salisbury Equestrian area.

eBird deemed the phalaropes as Rare. It also deemed rare the two Buffleheads &
160 Tree Swallows.

As an aside we have a steady flock of Lazuli Buntings (up to 7) eating millet
under our feeders (while we have them out -- a big bear has informed us that we
need to take in the feeders when we leave home). I treasure the intense blue of
their heads as it glows in the light.

> For those wanting a bit more information for the Canada Warbler:

The easiest way to get to this area would be to get on Rampart Range Rd and
head south, as if you were heading to Roxborough State Park. There will be
a parking lot on the West (left) side of the road in which you can get to
with no access issues. If you see the Intermediate school on the East
(right) side of the road, you have gone too far. Coords: 39.472435,
-105.073662

The warbler was seen in the vicinity of these coords: 39.470713, -105.076160

This is a small east-west sidewalk, slightly north of the pond which is
directly west of the skate park. It flew north of this area shortly after
letting me admire it.

Just an FYI, I have not seen it again today.

[cobirds] Bay-breasted Warbler in El Paso Co. update

2017-05-21 Thread Brandon
Lots of happy people were able to see the singing male Bay-breasted
Warbler, between Duckwood parking lot and the Fountain Creek Regional
Park Nature Center, along the trail that run along irrigation ditch
(this is known by some birders, as Warbler Alley). The bird was still
being seen as of 2:05pm.

Thanks to Tyler for the cobirds post, and to the people at Chico Basin
Ranch, who saw the post on their phone, and told me about it.

[cobirds] Re: BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, Blackpoll Warbler, Grace's Warbler (El Paso)

2017-05-21 Thread Tyler Stuart
COBirders,

I'm glad many have been able to refind at least the BAY-BREASTED WARBLER at
Fountain Creek Regional Park (El Paso) today, and I want to be sure to give
credit where it's due. Our group was not the first to find these birds.
Unfortunately, I didn't catch the name of the birder who had been
photographing them for at least 10 minutes when we walked up. Much thanks
to him for pointing them out.

Also, the Grace's Warbler at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, first found
yesterday by Debbie Barnes, continues slightly south of Debbie's original
coordinates: 38°43′46″ N 104°49′54″ W. Linda Hodges and I found it
singing, but it took a surprising, patient 15+ minutes to get a look at the
bird.

[cobirds] Hooded and Magnolia Warblers at Tempel Grove, Bent County

2017-05-21 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

I found a very cooperative male Hooded Warbler at Tempel Grove late this
morning. Predictably, it was low to the ground in the leaf litter near
the Melody Tempel Bench. Less predictably, it also posed in the middle
of the canal road.

The male Magnolia Warbler was less cooperative. Two other birders showed
up five minutes after it was found, and it never revealed itself again.
The Magnolia Warbler was just west of County Road 35.

[cobirds] West Arapahoe Co. Birding

2017-05-21 Thread Jared Del Rosso
No eastern warblers, but, since Friday (5/19), I've encountered some good
birds otherwise around Centennial & Greenwood Village in west Arapahoe.

On Friday, I had my first Lazuli Bunting of the year; the bird, a female,
was associating with a family of House Finches. Later in the day, I took my
dog for a walk around deKoevend. Along the Big Dry Creek behind the Goodson
Rec Center were two Warbling Vireos and a Dusky Flycatcher. Western Wood
Pewees, as others have mentioned on Friday, were "flycatching" from the
ground. I saw one that, I think, was "flycatching" small ants from a crack
in the sidewalk.

On Saturday (5/20), there was a juvenile Broad-winged Hawk, my first in
Arapahoe Co., at Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve, as well as a couple of
Turkey Vultures. An Olive-sided Flycatcher, my first at the preserve, was
perched along the High Line Canal near the northwestern entrance. At Willow
Spring Open Space, five White-throated Swifts, also my first in the county,
flew west, high over me, inexplicably.

Today (5/21), I took an early walk at deKoevend, where a Plumbeous Vireo
foraged and a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (my first in CO) sang near the S.
University Ave parking lot. There were six or seven Western Tanagers along
the west side of the park. On a later walk on the High Line Canal Trail
(from just south of E. Orchard Rd north toward E. Belleview), I had my
first Swainson's Thrush of the year, another Warbling Vireo, a chattering
Bullock's Oriole, a Western Kingbird, and a family of Great Horned Owls
(with two enormous young). No Yellow Warblers or Western Wood Pewees along
this stretch of the canal, which surprised me.

When I arrived home from the walks, I heard and briefly saw the
MacGillivray's Warbler singing in my yard.

[cobirds] Alder, Willow Flycatchers, CSR, El Paso Co, Sunday

2017-05-21 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

Another great morning banding at Clear Spring Ranch. Today the stars were
flycatchers: W Wood-pewee, Dusky Flycatcher, 2 Willow Flycatchers, and 1 Alder
Flycatcher. The last three were all in hand at the same time - so a great time
for comparison. The Alder did have a longer wing vs. tail, and precise measures
of the primaries gave the ID.

Other highlights were 6 species of warblers banded (N Waterthrush, Virginia’s,
Com Yellowthroat, Yellow, MacGillivray’s, YB Chat), and more Lazuli Buntings.

What a great weekend: the last three days were the busiest spring banding days
I’ve had, with about 150 birds banded. Wow!

I remember whining the last two springs that migration seemed to be passing us
by. Not this year!!!

Happy Migration,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Canada and Black-throated Gray Warblers - Roxborough

2017-05-21 Thread Scott Manwaring
All,

I was walking in the greenspace near my home this morning, and came across
a few good rarities.

The first was a Canada Warbler actively feeding in deciduous trees near a
stream, where a convenient path crosses the way. This area is to the west
of the Roxborough Skate Park.

The second was a Black-throated Gray Warbler actively feeding in a grove of
trees behind my home. This is where a long sidewalk cuts east-west across
the greenspace to join the two sidewalks together (this is north of the
Canada Warbler area).

Good luck!
