[cobirds] SE Colorado 5/25

2018-05-25 Thread Brandon
After not seeing the Golden-crowned Warbler in Cheyenne County, Van Truan
and I decided to bird in the 90+ degree heat in Kiowa, Bent, and Otero
Counties in SE Colorado on the way back to Pueblo (returning to Pueblo at
7:30pm after leaving at 4:15am (long day!).

Migrant land bird passerines were pretty much non-existent. A Swainson's
Thrush here and there. The only highlight really, were two *Whimbrel* at
the south end of Neenoshe Reservoir in Kiowa County. Also, single
White-rumped Sandpipers at Neenoshe and John Martin Reservoir, a
Long-billed Dowitcher at Neenoshe and a Sanderling at John Martin
Reservoir. A migrant Lincoln's Sparrow was at Melody Tempel Grove in Bent
County, also single male *Baltimore Orioles *were at Neenoshe Reservoir and
at Melody Tempel Grove. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was at Rocky Ford SWA in
Otero County. A few Dickcissel were singing along Bent County Road 35,
south of Melody Tempel Grove. A quick stop in Kit Carson, in Cheyenne
County, produced a Barn Owl being chasing by kingbirds and grackles.

[cobirds] Magnolia Warbler, Crow Valley Today

2018-05-25 Thread Jack Bushong
Hi all,
Earlier today there was a male Magnolia Warbler singing from a grove of
trees at the Crow Valley Campground. It was somewhat close to the main
parking lot, but across the dry canal about fifty yards to the north. We
first heard the bird vocalizing from the road. Other birds in the area
included several Orchard Orioles, a possible Gray Flycatcher, and an
Eastern Bluebird.
Good Birding,
Jack Bushong,
Louisville, CO.

the post wouldn't show up until 7:00 a.m. on the next day (Friday the 25th)

Re: [cobirds] Re: UI warbler, Larimer County - calling it a Blue-Winged Warbler

2018-05-25 Thread Nathan Pieplow
Joyce is correct; pure-looking Blue-winged and Golden-winged Warblers can
sing the song of the other species. Hybrids can sing the song of either
species, or (rarely) an intermediate song. Often, what people consider an
"abnormal" song from one of these species may be a perfectly normal
rendition of the second-category song (some people might be used to
thinking of it as the "alternate" song). However, second-category songs of
these two species are extremely variable and diverse, and cannot safely be
identified to species as far as I am aware.

In short, song tells us little about a *Vermivora *warbler's parentage, and
song alone should never be used to identify a *Vermivora *warbler to
species.

2018-05-25 Thread Joyce Takamine
In June 2004 there was a Blue-winged Warbler in Gregory Canyon in Boulder
which did not sing a pure Blue-winged song.
Ted Floyd said that we could not count it as a Blue-wing since it did not
sing a pure song, but I believe that some birds can
learn other songs. Maybe Nathan could comment on that.

The chokecherry blossoms have died back a great deal, but it was also
terribly windy out there today. Either reason could be keeping it
 away/hidden.

Good luck to any who venture out tomorrow.

[cobirds] Re: UI warbler, Larimer County - calling it a Blue-Winged Warbler

2018-05-25 Thread Sandra Laursen
After some good exchanges with other CObirders off list, I feel more
confident in calling this bird a *Blue-Winged Warbler.* Mark Miller
pointed out that a Blue-Winged Warbler loitered in a Jeffco park for
several weeks in 2015, and this led me to dig through the cobirds archive
to discover nearly-annual sightings of this bird somewhere along the Front
Range, as well as in SE Colorado and South Park. So this makes the RMNP
Endovalley location a bit more plausible. Two of us watched it for a good
bit of time - and we feel confident about the field marks we saw.

I also found several records of 'different' songs for this bird and
suggestions that (here at least) they often hang out with Yellow Warblers.
I can imagine that a wandering bird (or progeny thereof) without good
same-species models might pick up a song that is more like that of another
locally singing species - particularly if the reason the individual is out
of its usual range, or at the ragged edge, is that it is less fit to begin
with.

2018-05-25 Thread Nathan Pieplow
Just to remind everybody: female orioles sing frequently. So do female
cardinals and grosbeaks. In fact, females sing at least rarely in most
passerine species. So beware of assuming that a bird is a male just because
it's singing!

Re: [cobirds] Rose-breasted Grosbeak - Kohler Reservoir Boulder

2018-05-25 Thread Mail.indra.com
Mark Holmgren and I had a Rose Breasted Grosbeak singing away on Monday morning
on the Koehler Reservoir trail area, at the end of Dartmouth Street in Boulder.
We didn’t report it then because it didn’t come up as a box on eBird. We also
had Black Headed Grosbeaks singing, a nice duet!

[cobirds] Rose-breasted Grosbeak - CU East Campus, Boulder

2018-05-25 Thread Peter Burke
Good morning CoBirders,
CU East was very slow this morning as migrant action gives way to
nesting activity.
The one highlight was a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak singing from a
cottonwood just north of the "waterthrush" bridge between the two ponds.

Good birding,
Peter

[cobirds] Rose-breasted Grosbeak, central Bldr Cnty & other news

2018-05-25 Thread Linda Andes-Georges
I suppose this is the same bird that was here last year for about a week in
early June. I hear it singing at the top of the hill near us, which is on Ouray
Dr at the level of #8424 (lion statue; noisy dogs). It did not remain there for
long, or breed successfully, as far as I could tell, and I wonder why it came
back! Same question about the Ovenbirds in south Boulder, which return year
after year but for which we have never found signs of successful breeding.

We also have-- in our yard-- an intriguing Bullock's Oriole; it must be a young
male, judging from behavior, although it has little trace of a black goatee. It
sings like a male, and has been going around the house tapping on windows, like
a robin.

Black-chinned hummers, both sexes, visiting the feeders...

[cobirds] Re: Red Rocks Trading Post?

2018-05-25 Thread myrongerhard
Hi Elena: the feeders are still there (as of yesterday) - one to the "left"
behind the small building, and a platform feeder just above the small pond
over on the "right". Adding seeds by the volunteers officially ends at
Memorial Day, so finding seed in the feeders will probably be spotty until
the Fall.
