[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Report - Chatfield, 5/12/19
The participants in Denver Audubon's annual Mother's Day Breakfast with the Birds enjoyed a variety of species with us this morning, if not as many birds as the last couple of days. 25 new birds plus 2 returns from prior years: House Wren 4 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Swainson's Thrush 1 Hermit Thrush 2 American Robin 1 return, banded 2017 (FOS) Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Virginia's Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 1, banded 2016 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 8 Common Yellowthroat 2 Wilson's Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 We are now about half-way through our banding season, and we have already banded more birds than we did total last year. It is wonderful to see the birds coming through in such high numbers! We will be open daily, WEATHER PERMITTING, through May 31, except for Memorial Day. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy. Registration is required for all weekend visitors; see the Denver Audubon website to sign up. Individuals may visit weekdays without registering before the school groups arrive, which is usually around 10 a.m. Come visit! [cobirds] Fountain Creek Spring Count, El Paso County (Great-crested Flycatcher, etc.)
COBirders, About 40 enthusiastic birders split into 5 groups to bird 5 areas for the annual Fountain Creek Regional Park spring bird count. In all areas, observers noted very strong numbers of migrants, combining for about 98 total species on Saturday. This is rather above the prior average of about 84.5 total species per day since 1991. Highlights included Eastern Phoebe, Great-crested Flycatcher, multiple Clay-colored Sparrows, Broad-winged Hawk, American Redstart, Northern Waterthrash, Peregrine Falcon, and Orchard Oriole. Blackpoll Warbler was seen before and after count-day. We need to confirm, but Great-crested Flycatcher appears to be a first for the count. Eastern Phoebe, Orchard Oriole, and Broad-winged Hawk were also comparably really great, and only recorded 1-2 times prior. I'd also like to thank Colorado Springs birder Dianna Beatty for help with our on-going data compilation! [cobirds] Possible SWAINSON’S WARBLER/Last Chance-Washington Country
COBirders, I just had a probable SWAINSON’s WARBLER at Last Chance in Washington County. Never got a 100% look at it. Crawling & foraging on the ground & crawling low through the currents. I initially thought it was a Worm-eating Warbler but then got another look. The behavior was typical of Swainson’s Warbler. The bird was very skulky and difficult to see. I got binoculars on it twice & then lost it. On the porta-potty side of Last Chance. Once in the gate, straight down the hill in the thick currents., Beautiful male American Redstart there as well. [cobirds] Great Egret near Clear Creek, Adams Cnty
Hi Cobirders I found a Great Egret just south of the Clear Creek bike path, west of Lowell Blvd. This is Adams County. It was pointed out to me by a birding couple, Donna and Tom. I had seen it, but wrote it off as a Snowy, until they gave me a second look. The pond is part of Carl Park, a Hyland Hills Park, It could show up at Lowell Ponds, n. of Clear Creek, Clear Creek Park, or Lake Sangraco (private). [cobirds] NOWA; Boulder Co. birds Sunday a.m.
I had a Northern Waterthrush at Marshall Marsh at 9 this morning at the east end of the marsh, just before the long plank bridge. Also a probable Gray Flycatcher, and heard a Sora. There was a pair of Chimney Swifts flying over the Pearl St. Mall yesterday afternoon. The Savannah Sparrows are back at the former Open Space Hdqtrs pasture, and the Vesper Sparrows are back at Marshall Mesa off 66th. -- Dick Pautsch 427 Pearl St. Boulder, CO 80302 rjpaut...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. This is my first post to COBirds since getting to the area. Yesterday on the DFO count starting at the Audubon Nature Center we found a Prairie Warbler.
