[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chatfield Banding Station, 5/21/21

2021-05-21 Thread Meredith McBurney
Although the wind caused us to close and then reopen various nets over the
course of the morning, we finally had a sort of normal day for spring
banding, just really late. We had 4 FOS birds (Western Wood-Pewee, 2
species of Empidonax Flycatchers, Swainson's Thrush) all of which would
normally start arriving 2 weeks ago. Yellow Warblers and Catbirds
dominated the morning, as is typical for us during much of the spring.

We did have a rarity - our first ever Black-throated Blue Warbler. A
lovely adult female, she looked exactly like the picture in the Sibley's
Guide!

Here's the breakdown of the 26 new birds caught today:

Western Wood-Pewee 1
WIllow Flycatcher 1
Dusky Flycatcher 1
Cordilleran Flycatcher 1
Swainson's Thrush 1
Gray Catbird 5
Yellow Warbler 9 new, 1 banded 2019
Black-throated Blue Warbler
McGillivray's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 1
Yellow-breasted Chat 2
Lesser Goldfinch 1

We are open six days per week (closed Tuesdays) through May 30, weather
permitting. While some COVID related restrictions remain in place there
are opportunities most mornings for the public to visit, but reservations
are required. Visit https://denveraudubon.org/events/

 for
more information and to sign-up. Because each hour-long session is limited
to 10 people, we anticipate selling out most mornings, so register soon if
you are interested.

[cobirds] Magnolia Warblers, Matthews-Reeser Bird Scantuary, Estes Park, Larimer Co. 5/21

2021-05-21 Thread 'Jim Nelson' via Colorado Birds
Enjoying our first visit to Colorado in 18 months, it's been nice to get back
to birding in the Estes Park area.
I was birding later in the afternon today, May 21, in the Matthews-Reeser
Sanctuary at Lake Estes.  It was slow for a while, then, as often happens, a
flurry of activity at the place where there is a break in the rail fence to
allow access to the golf course.  I suddenly realized I was seeing two Magnolia
Warblers, a male and a female moving around, both in the area behind the fence
east of the cut-through and then across the paved trail into the area I think
is referred to locally as "pine point."  I remember seeing a couple of
sightings reported a few days ago on the eBird rare bird alert, and another
birder told me yesterday, when I was also birding at this location, that they
had been seen yesterday morning.  I tried checking eBird for the most recent
sightings just now, but it is balky.
In any event, given their rarity, these may be continuing birds from the
earlier reports.  Since at least one was still around about 4:15 as I walked
back to my car, and this does not appear to be a good night for migrating, I
think one or both may be around tomorrow as well.
Other highlights of our visit over the last two days including an amazing
fallout of Yellow-rumped Warblers at Lily Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park
this morning, literally dozens of birds in view a the same time as we walked
around the lake, seeing the nesting Osprey pair at Lake Estes with the male
aggressively attacking a Turkey Vulture yesterday, a tom Turkey standing on
Bear Lake Raoad in RMNP last evening displaying to two hens feeding on the
other side of the road, ignoring the stopping cars, and Great Horned Owls with
nestlings in the same tree on the west side of Estes Park where I last saw them
two years ago (pre-pandemic).  While birding this afternoon at Lake Estes, I
met a visiting birder from Paraguay who was seeing many species for the first
time.  Always fun to share that experience as I got to show him some local
birds and help him with names.
Looking forward to more great birds in the coming days

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 5/21

2021-05-21 Thread Colin Woolley
Today started off very busy, we had ~20 birds in the first hour and were on
pace for our busiest day of the season. Well, over the next 4 hours things
slowed down considerably and we ended the day with 32 newly banded birds of
18 species. Still a fine day, and it seems there was a lot of turnover
overnight, with no recaps of previously banded birds (no Kentucky Warbler
seen/netted either). We had great diversity in the area, my ebird checklist
for the morning topped 50 species for the first time this season. Here are
our totals:

Willow Flycatcher - 1
House Wren - 1
Rock Wren - 1
Yellow Warbler - 2
Wilson's Warbler - 1
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1
Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1
Common Yellowthroat - 2
MacGillivray's Warbler - 7
Ovenbird - 1
Lincoln's Sparrow - 2
Hermit Thrush - 2
Swainson's Thrush - 1
Yellow-breasted Chat - 1
Gray Catbird - 3
Bullock's Oriole - 3
Northern Mockingbird - 1
Brown Thrasher - 1

We are open 3 days per week (Friday - Sunday) through May 30th. Chico Basin
Ranch is once again open to the public and visitors are welcome at the
banding station, click here
 for more
details on visiting. We are opening nets at about 5:30am and continuing for
5 hours, depending on weather.

[cobirds] Bobolinks in Cherry Creek State Park

2021-05-21 Thread Gary Brower
CoBirders,

A week ago, several birders recorded Bobolinks in Cherry Creek State Park (via
eBird). Unless you had alerts set for Arapahoe County or Colorado, you may not
have seen the reports.

I went out this morning and found at least one (although some of the prior
reports reported more). The individual I saw was just east (50 feet or so) of
the Lone Tree Pond at the south-west end of the park. It was perched on some
mullen in a patch of rabbit bush. It was clearly a bobolink — gold patch on the
back of the neck and upper shoulders, white on the wings. Much smaller than the
numerous red-winged blackbirds and grackles (including Great-tailed). (This
area is near where the Dickcissels were found last year, but to the south by
several hundred yards).

According to eBird, bobolinks are “rare” in the park, having been reported in
only four individual weeks in the last 10 years (the second and third weeks of
May, and the second and fourth in June).

Happy birding!

[cobirds] Red-Headed Woodpecker in Conifer

2021-05-21 Thread Carolyn
Pleased to report a 1st ever sighting in our yard of a red-headed
woodpecker - adult. Unknown if male/female - unable to find info on
distinguishing between the two? Human husband remarked "that bird looks
chubby" which I quickly admonished with "birds don't get fat!!" but then
wondered if it could be a pregnant female seeking a nesting site? This one
flew-hopped from tree to tree, taking time on each (mostly pine types, some
juniper, some fir), not necessarily pecking and without haste seemed to
also be checking out our few birdhouses and bird / squirrel / nature-made
"condos" in the few deadened trees we have perhaps conducting a general
survey? We are approximately 9K feet, west of Aspen Park.

[cobirds] Banding at CSR, El Paso Co, Fri

2021-05-21 Thread Steven Brown
Hey COBirders,

The last three days have been pretty good for numbers at Clear Spring Ranch
banding, at least better than all spring.
31 birds banded Friday, 19 on Thursday, 24 on Wednesday. My best three-day
stretch this spring.

Lots of bigger birds moving this week, with flocks of W Tanagers, lots of
Bullock’s and Orchard Orioles, a smattering of warblers, and finally some
flycatchers.

Best on Wed - N Waterthrush, 8 Yellow Warblers, a Wilson’s Warbler (I don’t get
many in the spring), 2 Bullock’s Orioles and 2 Orchard Orioles.

Best on Thurs - FOY Alder Flycatcher, Dusky Flycatcher, Warbling Vireo, a VERY
LATE Ruby-crowned Kinglet, imm F, 4 YB Chats, a MacGillivray’s Warbler (only my
second), another Orchard Oriole, 2 Black-headed Grosbeaks, and FOY 2 Blue
Grosbeaks.

Best on Fri - FOY W Wood Pewee, 2 Willow Flycatchers, another Warbling Vireo, 2
Brown Thrashers, my first Lincoln’s Sparrow since 4/29 (!!), another N
Waterthrush, 7 Yellow Warblers, another Wilson’s Warbler, 3 more Bullock’s
Orioles, another Orchard Oriole, and a 3rd Blue Grosbeak.

3 of the chats, one catbird, and 5 Yellow Warblers are returns form previous
years, finding their way back.

Unusual sightings (un-banded) include Friday a Snow Goose (!) with a flock of
Canadas at dawn, and promptly departed, and a Sage Thrasher along the road to
my site.

Have a good weekend,
Steve Brown
Colo Spgs.

[cobirds] Little Blue Heron at Walden Ponds Boulder County

2021-05-21 Thread Lonny Frye
There was a lovely Little Blue Heron at the Cottonwood Pond at Walden Ponds
this morning. It was on an island and then circled the pond before landing
in the far corner by the treatment plant. There was also a lovely male
Orchard Oriole near the west side. The warbling vireos, common
yellowthroats and eastern kingbirds are back and plentiful.
lovely day for a walk.
