[cobirds] White-throated Sparrows singing the NEW SONG, Greenlee Preserve, Boulder Co.
Hey, all. In one of the more remarkable developments in birding in recent years, White-throated Sparrows have suddenly started singing a new song. The past few days, the two or possibly more White-throated Sparrows at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder Co., have started singing, and they are singing this new song! I haven't been able to get a good audio recording yet. If you're like me and grew up with White-throated Sparrow song in a different part of the ABA Area, this new song is really quite startling. And beautiful. You'll recognize it as *Zonotrichia* song, but it's really distinct from the way White-throated Sparrows sang in the not-so-distant past. The birds seem to be most reliable right around the feeding station. If I may opine: Playing a recording to try to get the birds to vocalize is recommended against; while playback works great in getting birds to come out and make sounds, it also has a way of making birds sound weird. Just listen out there. You'll hear it soon enough. Here is some information on the new song, including good audio: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/the-white-throated-sparrow-song-thats-taking-over-north-america/ Ted Floyd Lafayette, Boulder Co. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Dinosaur Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular. Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or Dusky Grouse. Birders of any skill level are always welcome. HawkWatch at Dinosaur Ridge is generally staffed by volunteers from about 9 AM to around 3 PM from March 1st to May 7th. Directions to site: >From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from the southwest end of lot to the hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the ridge. [cobirds] Weld PNG Sharp-tailed grouse lek question
Question about the Sharp-tailed Grouse Lek “known location” in PNG. I thought it would be one specific space of perhaps 50 yd diameter. I went to 2 locations of recent eBird checklists. Instead I found 3 small groups (3 birds each, male and female) of the birds along a 4 mile stretch of intersecting roads. So is the lek “location” where they congregate actually an area of many acres? Or perhaps the gathering time is short each morning and then they disperse over the broad area? I was slowly patrolling the area from 6:15 - 7 am. Ron Bolton Berthoud -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Friends of the Pawnee NG Site
Hi all I'm going to be converting my Friends of PNG site to a new Vermont flavor with our impending move. Birders have been asking me through email and in the field to make available the various linked resources on the site. I've captured the links requested and they can be viewed (even after site turns into a VT one) at https://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/files/FrPNGLinks.html. This page contains specific links for all CO county eBird RBAs, 10 Pawnee NG birding driving tours (includes Raptor Alley), and link to our active Pawnee NG iNaturalist project. For those interested in following my VT endeavors please email me and I'll share new VT website and email handle ("thevermontbirdingguy") as soon as I am up and running. ;-) Hope this helps! :-) Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
