[cobirds] Longspurs in Weld County
I saw both Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed longspurs today (6-9-23) between 0.2 and 0.4 miles east of the intersection of WCR’s 114 and 45. Had to walk around 50 yards out on the south side of the road to see them-there were Thick-billed closer to the road on the north side. I stopped by the northwest end of Union R. In the late afternoon and there were approximately 100 white pelican floating just off the shore. Good birding! Bill Fink. [cobirds] Prairie Merlin Boulder county
Around 3PM on Saturday 3-4-23 while searching in vain for the White-fronted goose from a terribly rocky road on the north side of Stearns lake I had nice views of a Prairie Merlin both on a fence post and perched in a tree-eventually it flew off to the east after being harassed by two Kestrels but it may still be in the neighborhood…. Tried to go shorebirding in Weld-Latham ponds almost entirely dry and same with Beebe draw-Loloff almost entirely dry and no birds around small areas of water left-Weld county 59 ponds only place with any water-there I saw a family of Black-necked Stilts(but no Avocets) and four Stilt sandpipers and thee Long-billed dowitchers and multiple Lesser yellowlegs and one Greater and two Wilson’s phalaropes in basic plumage and one lonely Western sandpiper in mostly basic plumage-wish had time for Jackson Res! [cobirds] Weld county 4-22-2023
Did a circuit to Lower Latham Beebe Draw Loloff and road 59 ponds-decent amount of water along road 48 on south side of Latham but no shorebirds-Beebe Draw very dry-only a small pond-Loloff had two Caspian terns at far north end and Semipalmated and Least sandpipers and at least 50 Avocets-road 59 ponds had a Long-billed curlew and about 20 Long-billed dowitchers along with many Least sandpipers and a White-faced ibis-guess it’s evident how much I’m into shorebirds but only common ducks and land birds were around. I visited a number of spots today in the mountains in Estes Park Allenspark and in Wardlots of Common Goldeneye at Lake Estes but no Barrow’s-in Allenspark on Ski Road there are new(to me) feeders at the houses just where the road turns sharply left-the larger house there has always had some feeders but the smaller cabin there now has a group of 4-5feeders right by the road and a convenient pull-off 10-15 yards from the feeders-it’s not the Fawnbrook Inn but a lot better than nothing! Had Pine Siskins PygmyRed-breasted Nuthatches and Clark’s Nutcracker and Mountain Chickadees and two Turkeys under the feeders-couldn’t find any active feeders in Ward but couldn’t access Todd Deininger’smap because I had no service there places I usually check weren’t active. Gene Rutherford was stopped next to the abandoned house just west of 128 and 37 Gray-crowned and Black rosy finches were perched in a tree there and periodically and briefly came down on the driveway to feed. Also saw Prairie falcon about 6 miles north of Nunn on 85 and Ferruginous and Rough-leggedhawks on “raptor alley “ west and north of Nunn. Male seen on two track extension of road 4.5-I took road E east off 287 to T intersection and then right for one mile to intersection with 4.5 where left for 0.4 miles. Bird was on the shoreline to the left with two Marbled Godwits for nice comparison. Also in same area were Snowy and Semipalmated Plovers andSemipalmated and Western sandpipers and many dowitchers . [cobirds] Weld Co Ponds 4-28-18
Sparse shorebirding today-best birds were four Whimbrels at a farm pond 0.4 miles north of the intersection of WCR 42 and 47 on west side of road-also a pair of Greater Scaup on that pond. Loloff had a lonely Lesser Yellowlegs and Beebe draw had 31 Avocets and five Long-billed dowitchers plus some Wilson’s Phalaropes. One Greater Yellowlegs was at the large farm pond on the north side of 42. Not quite up to Ruff/Dunlin standards but I do love seeing Whimbrels! Good birding... Bill Fink. [cobirds] Sunday 4-22-18 birding
Had two western grebes at Crom Lake along with four Avocets and assorted ducks. Chestnut-collared Longspurs still present on WCR 100 just east of WCR 45. One lonely McCown’s Longspur about 3 miles west on Murphy’s Pasture road with at least 50 Vesper sparrows but no Brewer’s sparrows I could pick out. Four Blacknecked Stilts at Loloff and one Wilson’s Phalarope. Not much at Latham-five Least Sanpipers and one Western sandpiper at Beebe draw in pond on south side of road. One Roughlegged hawk 3 Miles south of Briggsdale. Good birding. I spent the day birding in northeast Colorado and saw many of the usual suspects-Joey Kellner showed me an Eastern Wood Pewee and I heard a Northern Cardinal around area 9 at Tamarack Ranch. The biggest frustration was not being able to find an Upland Sandpiper even though I know they're there-my only excuse was it was noontime -consolation prize was a pair of Eastern Bluebirds just west of the house at Red Lion ranch.
