[cobirds] Longspurs in Weld County

2023-06-09 Thread 'William Fink' via Colorado Birds
I saw both Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed longspurs today (6-9-23) between
0.2 and 0.4 miles east of the intersection of WCR’s 114 and 45. Had to walk
around 50 yards out on the south side of the road to see them-there were
Thick-billed closer to the road on the north side. I stopped by the northwest
end of Union R. In the late afternoon and there were approximately 100 white
pelican floating just off the shore. Good birding! Bill Fink. Longmont

[cobirds] Prairie Merlin Boulder county

2023-03-04 Thread 'William Fink' via Colorado Birds
Around 3PM on Saturday 3-4-23 while searching in vain for the White-fronted
goose from a terribly rocky road on the north side of Stearns lake I had nice
views of a Prairie Merlin both on a fence post and perched in a tree-eventually
it flew off to the east after being harassed by two Kestrels but it may still
be in the neighborhood…. Bill Fink. Longmont

Black-necked Stilts(but no Avocets) and four Stilt sandpipers and thee
Long-billed dowitchers and multiple Lesser yellowlegs and one Greater and two
Wilson’s phalaropes in basic plumage and one lonely Western sandpiper in mostly

2022-04-22 Thread 'William Fink' via Colorado Birds
Did a circuit to Lower Latham Beebe Draw Loloff and road 59 ponds-decent amount
of water along road 48 on south side of Latham but no shorebirds-Beebe Draw
very dry-only a small pond-Loloff had two Caspian terns at far north end and
Semipalmated and Least sandpipers and at least 50 Avocets-road 59 ponds had a
Long-billed curlew and about 20 Long-billed dowitchers along with many Least
sandpipers and a White-faced ibis-guess it’s evident how much I’m into
shorebirds but only common ducks and land birds were around. Bill Fink.

Ski Road there are new(to me) feeders at the houses just where the road turns
sharply left-the larger house there has always had some feeders but the smaller
cabin there now has a group of 4-5feeders right by the road and a convenient
pull-off 10-15 yards from the feeders-it’s not the Fawnbrook Inn but a lot
better than nothing! Had Pine Siskins PygmyRed-breasted Nuthatches and Clark’s
Nutcracker and Mountain Chickadees and two Turkeys under the feeders-couldn’t
find any active feeders in Ward but couldn’t access Todd Deininger’smap

the birds where found during the CFO convention field trips to the Pawnee.

Ibirded my way back from Lamar to Longmont via Baca county(some might question
my sense of direction)on Monday. The usual Baca birds weren’t easy to find -the
only Long-billed Curlew was in a field onthe south side of Road M just after
turning off 287. Best Bird was a Roadrunner at CR5 and road M after driving
all of Cottonwood canyon. Oddly there was an Osprey perched on a telephone pole
13 miles north of Springfield. Thanks to Brandon and Dave for finding so many
great birds! Good birding. Bill Fink
