[cobirds] Pueblo birds recently

2017-02-01 Thread Brandon Percival
Not much new to report from Pueblo recently.

Gwen Moore found four Juniper Titmice yesterday at Pueblo Reservoir, and I
was happy to see a couple of them today. They are around North Picnic
Road/Juniper Breaks Campground on the North side of Pueblo Reservoir.
Thanks to Gwen for letting me about them, I hadn't seen one around the
Reservoir for a few years.

I stopped by Pueblo City Park, yesterday afternoon before basketball games
in town. The best birds were a Greater White-fronted Goose and a Ross's
Goose at pond in the middle of the park. I found some little birds in NE
portion of park. A bunch of Cedar Waxwings were there were fun to see.

The only day I have really looked at the water at Pueblo Reservoir lately
was on Saturday, during an Aiken Audubon trip. We saw eight Common Loons,
which was one more than I had seen earlier in January. Both a Clark's and
a Red-necked Grebe were still present that day, as were six species of
gulls. No sign of either of the Glaucous Gulls, Mew Gull, or Bonaparte's
Gulls from earlier in the month.

I have had no time to walk any of the River in Pueblo, for a while, so not
sure what is still around.

Saturday is Eagle Days at Pueblo Reservoir, which means a lot of people
trying to see Bald Eagles. Since it is been so warm, there is very little
ice left on Pueblo Reservoir, so eagle numbers might be low this weekend.

[cobirds] Dunlin in Pueblo update 1/23 am

2017-01-23 Thread Brandon Percival
So far, the Dunlin hasn't appeared today at Pueblo Reservoir at the
South Shore Marina tires. It could be somewhere, if someone happens
to see it again, please report.

There was an adult Tundra Swan at Valco Ponds in Pueblo on Thursday,
that the Pueblo birders didn't hear about until yesterday. It would
be nice, if out of town visitors let us know, about good birds down
here. We don't have a lot of birders around here, and can't find
everything.

Great Black-backed and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, one adult each, were
on the South Shore Marina tires this morning.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Pueblo CBC Results

2016-12-22 Thread Brandon Percival
Hi all,

14 people in 8 parties covered the Pueblo CBC circle yesterday, which
includes Runyon Lake, Lake Minnequa, Roselawn Cemetery, Blende,
Vineland, 40th Lane, Huerfano Reservoir, CF&I Lakes (private) and
Comanche Power Plant (private).

We found 92 species and nearly 46,000 birds were counted. As usual,
this circle has lots of birds, mostly European Starlings, Red-winged
Blackbirds, and Eurasian Collared-Doves. This year, Snow and Ross's
Geese (16,000) made a return trip to the circle, after not being
around last year. It was a pleasant day to be out birding, not as
windy or cold as it could have been. We found nearly all the expected
duck species and raptor species. Nothing really rare was found, a few
birds that haven't been on the count, too often were found. I should
have all the results entered into the CBC Website later today. Thanks
all for helping!!

[cobirds] Purple Sandpiper Summit Co. CBC update

2016-12-19 Thread Brandon Percival
Hi all,

I heard today from the compiler of the Summit County Christmas Bird
Count. The count was scheduled last Friday, the day, the Purple
Sandpiper was found, though the count didn't occur that day
unfortunately. The count is now scheduled for early January, which
means the Purple Sandpiper will have to stick around for a while, for
it to be counted on a Colorado Christmas Bird Count.

The bird seemed pretty happy today, feeding in the warm water along
the inlet! What an incredible find, hopefully the finders will write
up about how they discovered it in the CFO Journal, once the CBRC
accepts this bird, as a first state record.

[cobirds] Purple Sandpiper within Summit County CBC circle

2016-12-18 Thread Brandon Percival
The Purple Sandpiper found on Friday, is within the Summt County CBC
circle. The count was scheduled to have occurred that day. Waiting
to hear from the compiler, if the count did occur that day, as
scheduled. If it was, then the Purple Sandpiper was seen on count day
of the Summit County CBC, and would be one of the most exciting finds
on a Colorado Christmas Bird Count ever!

If anyone is there early tomorrow morning, please post to cobirds
right away, so people know it is there or not, and can perhaps get
there at some point tomorrow. Thanks!!

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir CBC 17 Dec

2016-12-18 Thread Brandon Percival
I believe the Pueblo Reservoir CBC total for yesterday is at 103 species,
plus at least 10 count week birds so far. Quite snowy, cold, and steam on
the reservoir kept the species total down from the last few years. No new
birds for count were found. The number of helpers were down, because of
the weather as well. Thanks to everyone who helped, including several from
out of town! We had a nice compilation party as usual at the compiler Mark
Yaeger's Art Gallery. We haven't had a snowy and very cold Pueblo
Reservoir CBC in a while. I believe we missed Western Meadowlark for the
first time on this count. The numbers have been dropping on the count for
the last few years.

[cobirds] Re: Christmas Bird Counts this weekend

2016-12-16 Thread Brandon Percival
I've heard from a few Christmas Bird Count compilers, and it appears
ALL Colorado Christmas Birds Counts that were scheduled for this
weekend are ON (none have been postponed or cancelled)! Good luck, be
safe, keep the icy roads away!

Congrats to the John Marin Reservoir CBC! Yesterday's total of 117
species is amazing. Sounds like the Fountain Creek CBC on Wednesday
was pretty good as well. I saw some results from Weldona-Fort Morgan
CBC, looks like they had a nice variety of birds too. I'm guessing
some CBCs this weekend, will have lower totals then usual, with the
weather, though hopefully they will still have good counts.

With the awful weather conditions expected this weekend (Friday night
and Saturday morning, looking to be very bad), have any compilers
postponed any Christmas Bird Counts for Saturday (especially) or
Sunday? Be safe everyone, trying to get to and from and during

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Counts starting this week

2016-12-12 Thread Brandon Percival
Hi all,

If you wanted to pre-register for Christmas Bird Counts on the CBC
Website, it doesn't sound like that is going to happen this year. So,
please contact the compiler(s) of counts you want to go on, as quickly
as possible. This weekend's counts may be pretty cold (perhaps snowy
too, in some areas). Be careful out there!

If you take photos of birds on Colorado CBCs this year, please post
them on the Colorado CBC Photos Facebook page. This certainly helps
the Regional Editor know, what has been photographed on Colorado
Christmas Bird Counts. Count Week birding begins for the Saturday
counts on Wednesday-Friday and for the Sunday counts on
Thursday-Saturday. This year, with the cold weather on Count Days
this weekend, it might be a good idea to look for stuff during Count
Week, as some species may not still be around for Count Day.
Compilers will put on the CBC Website (cw) for species not found on
count day, though found during the count week period (three days
before and three after, in their count circle). You can e-mail me
photos of rare stuff if you need to, as well, just let me know, which
count the photos are from, so I know.

Remember to try to get photos of rare birds found during Count Day or
Count Week, if possible. Certain species reported on Counts, that
aren't documented in anyway, will have to be deleted. Documentation
should include a written description of what the bird you saw looked
like, and why and how you figured out that is what it was, and how you
eliminated other species, that are more likely. CBRC State Review
species found on Counts, have to be documented, just submit a record
to the CBRC on the bird, and e-mail me a copy, so I know the bird was
documented.

Thanks and Good luck to everyone and have a safe Christmas Bird Count season.

[cobirds] Great Sand Dunes N.P. CBC

2016-12-09 Thread Brandon Percival
Hi all,

One of missing CBC dates, has been figured out. Dec 31st will the
date for the Great Sand Dunes N.P. Christmas Bird Count. Contact
compiler Dewane Mosher, his e-mail is dewane_mos...@nps.gov

Read Ted Floyd's cobirds post, will all the dates and contact info for
all other Colorado CBCs.

It doesn't appear that the CBC Website is ready for people to
pre-register for counts, so please e-mail compilers, and let them
know, you want to join in on their count(s).

The first Christmas Bird Counts are on Wednesday, 14 Dec. Remember if
you happen to see rare birds, or anything in a CBC circle, within 3
days (before or after), of count day, the species can be included for
Count Week, if the species is missed on Count Day.

[cobirds] Tundra Swans Pueblo 12/1

2016-12-01 Thread Brandon Percival
Not sure these are too chase-able, unless we can figure which pond
they went to, though two juvenile Tundra Swans were flying along the
Arkansas River in Pueblo, this morning. I was near the Pueblo Nature
Center, when I saw them. I got a few photos in flight. I checked one
likely pond nearby, and didn't see them there. I hear there were
other swan(s) from a couple of El Paso County sites today, as well.

[cobirds] CBC Registration (New Info)

2016-12-01 Thread Brandon Percival
There seems to be some sort of issues with the Registration part of
the Christmas Bird Count website. Not sure when it will be open, is
the latest word from National Audubon people.

Important: If you plan to go on the 1st Air Force Academy CBC in El
Paso County on Friday 16 December, you need to e-mail the compiler
now, as she needs a bunch of information from you, so you can get
clearance to be on the property, during the count.

All other counts, contact the compiler by e-mail, so they know you are
coming, and they will get you the info for their count.

Re: [cobirds] Dates and Contact Info for Colorado Christmas Bird Counts, 2016-2017

2016-12-01 Thread Brandon Percival
So far, the CBC Website isn't open for people to register for
Christmas Bird Counts. So, make sure to contact the compilers of the
count(s) you plan to go on, so they know. I'm hoping, like everyone
else, that the CBC Website will be open for people to sign up for
counts soon. The first counts are on 14 December,

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 11/21 -- Pacific Wren, etc.

2016-11-21 Thread Brandon Percival
Chris Knight (visiting from out of state) and I walked the Arkansas
River, below Pueblo City Park in Pueblo (Pueblo County), to the wooded
footbridge (west of Dutch Clark Stadium) this morning. The best
things, were a Pacific Wren (we think, seen and heard, and recorded),
female Wilson's Warbler, and four White-winged Doves. In Pueblo City
Park, we re-found the juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in the NE part
of the park, that Ira Sanders and the DFO found yesterday. Also, in
this part of the park, was a White-winged Dove, and lots of
Yellow-rumped Warblers and other birds.

[cobirds] DFO Field Trip to Pueblo, 20 Nov

2016-11-20 Thread Brandon Percival
Today's DFO Field Trip around Pueblo, saw the following birds of note:

East of Valco Ponds parking lot in Pueblo:

BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE - 1 juvenile, flew by the group at 9:35am along
the Arkansas River, near Valco Ponds #2 and 3, and flew west, later
seen at Pueblo Reservoir, off West Fishing Road. This isn't the one
that was present from 30 Oct to 15 Nov, as today's bird was one was a
juvenile bird, and that other bird was an adult bird. I think like 85
birders now have seen a Black-legged Kittiwake at Pueblo Reservoir
this month!

BANK SWALLOW - 1 still flying around over the Arkansas River, near
Valco Ponds -- can this bird stay to December 1st, for a new winter
record for Colorado, we'll see.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 1 I saw it on far side of the 3rd Valco Pond
(dis-appeared quickly)

Greater Roadrunner - 2 seen along the road, on the west side of the
3rd Valco Pond

Say's Phoebe - 2 near the Valco Bridge

Mexican Duck/Mallard - 1 along the River, near Valco Ponds #3

Bewick's Wrens, Bushtits, a Yellow-rumped Warbler, Curve-billed
Thrasher were also seen, on our walk.

Didn't see the White-winged Scoter or Rusty Blackbird, from two days
ago. The scoter might be on some other pond, or left the area. The
blackbird is likely somewhere along the river.

Pueblo Reservoir:

Great Black-backed Gull - 1 adult on the South Shore Marina tires
A Pacific Loon and two Common Loons - off West Fishing Road

Pueblo City Park:

Ira Sanders called me, to let me know they found a Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker - a juvenile in NE part of the park this afternoon

A pretty fun day in Pueblo.

[cobirds] Great Black-backed Gull at Pueblo Res.

There is an adult very black backed large gull in the middle of Pueblo
Reservoir right now. It appears to me to be a Great Black-backed Gull. It
is way far out on the choppy water. This is when one shows up every year

2016-11-18 Thread Brandon Percival
I walked the entire south side of the river, from the road bridge
below Pueblo Reservoir dam to the Valco Bridge. Margie Joy joined me
for part of my walk, east of Valco Ponds parking lot. It was very
entertaining of a walk, as it usually is, during the month of
November.

Highlights (in order of when I saw them):
White-throated Sparrow - 2
Barn Swallow - 1 (likely the same one that has been around)
Say's Phoebe - 1
White-winged Scoter - 1 female/immature (photos taken)
Rusty Blackbird - 1
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher - 1
BANK SWALLOW - 1 (maybe the first November sighting for Colorado?) --
photos taken

Margie also saw the White-winged Scoter, Bank Swallow, and Rusty Blackbird.

[cobirds] Pueblo Res., Pueblo Co. 11/16

2016-11-16 Thread Brandon Percival
A Red-necked Grebe was off Sailboard launching area, at Pueblo
Reservoir this morning. I think this a new one, since the last one
that was seen, was back on 8 Nov. I saw five Common Loons and (no
Pacifics), off West Fishing Road and in the State Wildlife Area.

I looked pretty carefully at the locations the Black-legged Kittiwake
has been recently, in the State Wildlife Area and off West Fishing
Road. I didn't see the Kittiwake at those locations, it may have been
further west toward Turkey Creek perhaps or maybe it left finally
after 17 days of being here. I believe just over 70 people were able
to see the kittiwake. Hopefully it will appear again, since it has
dis-appeared and re-appeared before.

[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake -- Day 16

Monday, Nov 14: Early morning update, the adult winter plumage Black-legged
Kittiwake is currently present (as of 7:38am) at the State Wildlife Area on

hopefully this update is helpful. Pacific Loon is west of West Fishing

[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake at Pueblo Res. all day today 11/13

2016-11-13 Thread Brandon Percival
A good number of people were able to see the bird today (including a
visiting birder from Tennessee), after the early morning sighting from West
Fishing Road, it spent the rest of the day in the State Wildlife Area, seen
off the middle parking looking west. It seems to hang out near the diving
Common and/or Pacific Loons. Looking for these diving loons, and looking
at the gulls near them, seems to be a good trick to find the kittiwake
lately. *I did a quick count of all the people, who I know saw the bird so
far, and that total is 62 people at least*. The bird has been around for
15 days (since 30 October), though missing for 4 days last weekend, when no
one saw it. A good number of Common Loons were seen today, from both West
Fishing Road and in the SWA. The Pacific Loon finally showed up late in
the day, in the SWA. Other stuff: American Avocets have been around the
last two days, including a flock of 10 on Saturday. American White
Pelicans and a few Double-crested Cormorants, plus Bonaparte's Gulls also
continue around the SWA/West Fishing Road areas of Pueblo Reservoir.
Hopefully the bird will hang around for another week at least, as the DFO
Group is coming down next weekend.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Black-legged Kittiwake update 11/12

2016-11-12 Thread Brandon Percival
Nearly 20 people were able to see the bird, off West Fishing Road at Pueblo
Reservoir (Pueblo County), a little bit ago. Look near the two Common
Loons, looking to the west. Also, one Pacific Loon continues in this area
as well. A couple speed boats scared off the kittiwake from the State
Wildlife Area this morning, also many Quail hunters shooting near me there
early this morning, so I wasn't there very long.

[cobirds] Pacific Loon -- Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 11/4

2016-11-04 Thread Brandon Percival
Hi all,

I spent a little time this morning (4 November), scoping the western
parts of Pueblo Reservoir. The best bird was a Pacific Loon in the
State Wildlife Area on the NW side of Pueblo Reservoir. There were
also a dozen or more Bonaparte's Gulls. From the end of West Fishing
Road, I saw two Common Loons. I walked out from the parking lot by
Hobie Cat Road, and saw four more Common Loons. I didn't check any
other parts of the Reservoir.

If anyone happens to see the Kittiwake today, please report, I know
there are people interested in looking for the bird over the weekend.
I likely will NOT be able to bird Pueblo Reservoir on Saturday, unless
someone finds a murrelet or eider or something, and then I will have
to leave where I'll be, and get out there. I plan to be looking
around Pueblo Reservoir on Sunday\, unless something else comes up.

I've walked around Pueblo City Park, with other birders a couple of
times recently, there have been a good number of birds in there. On
November 1st, there was a Chipping Sparrow, and on November 3rd, there
was a Hermit Thrush. There have been Yellow-rumped Warblers,
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, all three Nuthatch species, Brown Creeper,
Mountain and Black-capped Chickadees, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers,
Northern Flickers, Dark-eyed Juncos, Cedar Waxwings, American Robins,
and Townsend's Solitaires. The pond has a lot of Wood Ducks right
now. I'm hoping that Pueblo City Park will have some interesting
warbler or something soon, as there are a lot of little birds in
there.

[cobirds] Kittiwake info

2016-10-31 Thread Brandon Percival
The last update I heard about from today is at 3:20pm from the South Shore
Marina area at Pueblo Reservoir. I don't know if anyone was out looking
for it, later on or not.

If today's pattern works for tomorrow, it might be worth looking for it,
way west, like in the State Wildlife Area, early in the morning. Several
people were looking from Sailboard launching area before sunrise, and the
bird didn't appear. We then we over to West Fishing Road, after 9am, when
it flew by us, heading east. Then it was at Sailboard launching area and
then the SE Corner of the Lake for several hours in the mid to late morning
through 3:20pm at least.

I've heard more people are hoping to try for it tomorrow, I'll likely be
checking the Reservoir tomorrow, though won't start at Sailboard, since
that didn't work out early this morning.

I'll post to cobirds, if I happen to find it.

A Red-necked Grebe and three Common Loons were off Sailboard launching area
today. I don't think anything else of note was found at Pueblo Reservoir
today, though perhaps other things were seen.

I think about 14 more people or more were able to see the adult basic

Happy so many people were able to see it today, and yesterday.

2016-09-03 Thread Brandon Percival
Mark Peterson, Kara Carragher, Lisa Edwards, and I birded in SE
Colorado today (Saturday, 3 September 2016).

The best things we saw were a singing male PINE WARBLER at Fairmount
Cemetery in Lamar, Prowers County (likely the same bird that Dave
Leatherman saw last month) and a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON (not a
full adult and not a juvenile) at the south side of Neenoshe
Reservoir, Kiowa County. We also saw Great Crested Flycatchers at
Hasty Campground (Bent Co.), Neenoshe Reservoir Locust Grove (Kiowa),
and Melody Tempel Grove (Bent Co.) -- 5 total for the day I believe.
A Baltimore Oriole and a Merlin were also at Hasty Campground, a Green
Heron was at Rocky Ford SWA (Otero Co.), and two American Redstarts
and a "Myrtle" Yellow-rumped Warbler were at Melody Tempel Grove.

[cobirds] Black Swift in Pueblo 5/24

2016-05-24 Thread Brandon Percival
I had a little time to go to Osprey Picnic Area in Rock Canyon, below
Pueblo Reservoir dam in Pueblo County, after some clouds came in from
the north this morning (around 8:45am). I noticed a good number of
swallows flying around, and looked way high up in the clouds, and
picked out one Black Swift with them. I didn't see other ones.

Cloudy mornings in late May/early June, below Pueblo Reservoir dam,
seems to be a good place to look for Black Swifts. The last few years
I've seen them here, as they are migrating through to the mountains to
breed. I didn't detect any migrant land birds in the trees and bushes
here unfortunately.

Hi all,

I walked the Arkansas River Trail, from below Pueblo City Park east to the

between Reservoir Drive (where there is a parking lot), and the

Northern Parula, Red-headed Woodpecker, Least and Olive-sided Flycatchers.
Between Pueblo City Park and Reservoir Dr., there were two Swainson's
Thrushes, a Western Tanager, and Wilson's Warbler. Besides for Yellow
Warblers, the Wilson's and N. Parula were the only ones I found along this

There were a few warblers near the first parking lot, including a male
*Tennessee
Warbler*, my first for Otero County! At Lake Holbrook, also in Otero
County, the Great Egret that some reported yesterday, was still present. I
didn't see the Laughing Gull.

In Bent County, after visiting Hasty Campground, Jim Newell and I stopped
by Van's Grove on Road JJ, between 17 and 18, on N side of road, and saw a
Cassin's Vireo, male Indigo Bunting, and a singing male Nashville Warbler
(I assume this wasn't the same one that I saw on 5/3). At the Fort Lyon
Wildlife Easement at Roads HH and 16, seemed birdy. We saw a hybrid Indigo
x Lazuli Bunting, also my first Virginia's Warbler for the spring.

I ended up with 19 species of warblers in SE Colorado for 4-10 May. I saw
nine species of warblers this morning, I think there seems to be more birds
in Bent County today, then I've seen in Prowers/Baca/Kiowa Counties over
the past few days.

Yesterday, Jim and I went over to the grove of trees at Upper Queens
Reservoir in Kiowa County, looking for a Magnolia Warbler, that Joey
Kellner found earlier in the day, and instead we found a *Prairie
Rattlesnake* in the Grove, so be careful if birding there.

I ended up with 5 Northern Parulas, 5 Summer Tanagers, 3 American
Redstarts, 2 Nashville Warblers, 2 Northern Waterthrush, 2 Broad-winged
Hawks while I was in SE Colorado over the six days. I saw one of each of
quite a few warblers, this included: Golden-winged, Magnolia,
Black-throated Blue, Black-throated Green, Black-and-white, Tennessee, and
Townsend's. I never saw Ovenbird, Chestnut-sided, Blackpoll, Palm, among
others that I usually see this time of year.

Great to see you all at the CFO Convention in Lamar, it was a lot of fun!

Jim Newell and I saw a first spring Townsend's Warbler (not too common in
spring) at Lamar Community College grove in Prowers County, early this
afternoon, before a Lamar thunderstorm began. Finally a few different
migrants today in Lamar area. Saw my first Gray Catbirds, Blue Grosbeaks,
and a Green-tailed Towhee for this spring in Colorado this morning.

So why are Magnolia Warblers and now Bay-breasted Warblers showing up in CO
before 10 May, and why are there no Blackpoll Warblers yet? Spring
migration in Colorado is always a big guessing game!

Great CFO Convention, thanks to every one in charge of things! Fun to see
so many people in SE Colorado.

Two groups from the CFO Convention visited the area below Two Buttes
Reservoir dam, this morning. It was very slow for migrating passerines.
Highlights: two Summer Tanagers, singing male Northern Parula, a Northern
Waterthrush, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Orchard Oriole. I think it was the
slowest day for migrants for this time of year, I have ever had at this
location. It was extremely quiet! My group said they enjoyed the day, so
that is good! Never know when migrant traps will be full of birds, or no
birds! Yesterday migrant traps were pretty birdy in SE Colorado, today
maybe not so much!

[cobirds] SE CO 5/4 birds

2016-05-04 Thread Brandon Percival
After the interesting warblers I found earlier in the day (read previous
posts if you want), thing slowed down for unusual things.

I went to Melody Tempel Grove in Bent Co. The best bird there was a
Red-headed Woodpecker, no rare migrants that I could find.

I checked most Lamar area locations, Prowers County.

Riverside Cemetery had a singing Field Sparrow, along with singing
Clay-colored, Brewer's, and Chipping Sparrows. Dave Leatherman found a
singing Cassin's Vireo here today.

Lamar Community College: normal stuff for me a singing White-winged Dove,
Northern Cardinals, and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. Also, Mississippi Kite,
two Western Tanagers, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, among other normal stuff.
Warblers weren't very thick. Thrushes were however.

At Fairmount Cemetery in Lamar. Not too much, except for a Red-bellied
Woodpecker, Bullock's Oriole, and the siskin/goldfinch/Chipping Sparrow
convention.

Ended the day with an excellent Pizza dinner with some friends!

today too, Canvasback - 1, Bufflehead - 1, Ring-necked Duck - 1, Lesser
Scaup - 8. Other birds were a Solitary Sandpiper, Yellow Warbler - 2
singing, Brown Thrasher - 2, Black Phoebe - 1, Eastern Phoebe - 1,
Bullock's Oriole - 3, Western Kingbird -1, Forster's Tern - 2 (first found
by Margie Joy, earlier in the day), Orange-crowned Warbler - 2, Common
Yellowthroat - 1, Lincoln's Sparrow - 1, Yellow-rumped Warblers, lots of

Stephany McNew and I birded around Canon City this morning. We checked out
the area on Hwy 67, north of Hwy 50, hoping for the Northern Goshawk,
though we didn't see it, though we did see a Golden Eagle. Rich
Miller's *Long-tailed
Duck* continued at Valco Pond in Canon City. We saw Rich Miller at the
Canon City Riverwalk walking west from Raynolds Ave., where didn't find any
Winter Wrens, hopefully he did, we did see the Western Screech-Owl, a
Mountain Chickadee, Spotted Towhee, and other birds. We saw the *Red-naped
Sapsucker* at the Holy-Cross Abbey, in the pines by Gymnasium. At
Centennial Park we saw the *Yellow-bellied Sapsucker *in the pine by the
tennis courts. At Rouse Park, we didn't find any sapsuckers or the Hermit
Thrush, though there was a Pine Siskin and lots of juncos. At Lakeside
Cemetery, there were Red-breasted Nuthatches, Western Bluebirds, and more
Pine Siskins. We never found any Williamson's Sapsuckers at any of the
four places they could have been.
